Hey Folks, Is it hot enough for ya?!?! I never understand how the temperatures in Tennessee go from a nice, cool temperature and skyrocket to scalding hot in a very short time, with no in-between ranges to prepare us for the heat of the oven outside. It is this time of the year when I am thankful that the majority of my work is done indoors. My hat is off to those of you who have to endure the heat of the outside every day. I could not do it.

This issue is packed with new advertisers and lots of great upcoming events like Biketoberfest, Thunder Beach, Boogie Hollar and T.O.A.D. Check them out and make plans to attend the awesome events that are advertised, and let them know you heard about them from Southern Biker Magazine.

You can stay up-to-date on all types of motorcycle events by visiting our website at: http://www.southernbikermagazine.com/ and click on the Events tab. Also, while you are there, click on the Biketoberfest ad to find out more about Biketoberfest and where to stay, what to do, and where to go. They have all the latest info available there.

Many of us still continue to struggle financially and bad things keep happening, like your vehicle breaks down or your house burns down, or stuff is stolen, or you lose a loved one. Life is tough, but have faith that things will get better. I say that to reassure myself as well. We have many things to be thankful for and we work really hard to earn a living. We are honest and loyal people and we try to do the right things. We go to sleep with a clean conscience and feel good about what we are doing in life and with this magazine and our other magazine: Sword & Shield. Things happen and bring us down, but we try to think about the positive things in life that keep us going when times get tough: We have a loving family, fairly good health, food on the table, clothes on our back, a roof over our head, and great people who add color and joy to our lives that we are blessed to have as friends. We pray every day for the leadership of this country to find the right path and do what's best for the citizens and not themselves.

What do you say to a guy that takes his motorcycle into the ocean, deep water and all,

sharks, no life preserver for himself and then, THEN…takes on big waves and WINS? “Boy, you got Marbles!” Everything about this stunt was off the chain. He begins on land then into a bayou of sorts that leads to the ocean and big waves of Tahiti.

When I saw this I had to include it in this issue, not because it’s hot, but because a lot of us head to the ocean for a Bike Week or a Thunder Beach. Can you imagine the draw of having this guy suit up and do his thing out there in front of thousands of motorcycle riders? Daaaaaaaang!

Robbie “Maddo” Maddison teamed up with DC and Red Bull to do many, many different types of motorcycle stunts, but none more awesome than this. “I grew up surfing, and my wife is a big-time wakeboard champion, so every time we’re home in Australia we’re in boats, on the water, etc. I’m obviously a motorcycle guy, but I was on the back of a boat and we were cruising along the river and I’m looking at the wake coming up the back, watching her wakeboard, and something clicked in my head. I fantasized putting skis on a bike and riding on water and I kept toying with it, playing with designs and concepts, and eventually it became a reality,” said Maddo. Most people have a hard time riding dirt bikes around a track, much less doing it in the ocean. But Maddo pulls it off and then some.

Motocross bikes don’t float, as a rule, and combustion engines and water don’t mix. Maddison’s team went through 12 iterations of the front ski which has fins on the bottom to provide some steering control while on the water. Custom fitted fins on the rear tire gave him the

push thru the water. Mechanics also added an inflatable device onto his bike to keep it from sinking if he needed to bail, and stuffed foam into the air intake to prevent the bike from taking in water. In all, his team spent 5,000 man-hours hammering out the final design of the bike.

Said Maddo, “The thing that sticks with me the most after that whole experience was how physically demanding it was. Honestly, I really thought that getting the right wave would have been easier [Laughs]. I don’t think the photos or video show how physical it was. You can’t see that when the wave broke right behind me, I honestly thought that might be the end of my life. I’ve never felt like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time more than I did right there. It was a near-death experience. At the end of the day, the images and footage say something pretty awesome, but the ferocity and how gnarly that thing was can’t really be put into words.”

Stunts have come a long way in my lifetime, and one thing is for sure… Kids, don’t try this at home.

StayingFresh

From riding a motorcycle to overseas travel, I have learned a lot over the

years about how important hydration is in overcoming fatigue and staying fresh. Most of what we call jet lag is really about dehydration. That's why they are always coming around with beverage carts. The better hydrated you are the better you will feel after your trip. I always drink extra water the day before a flight or a motorcycle ride.

Riding is one of the most dehydrating recreational activities you can do. You not only have the element of the sun, the wind and air is also sucking moisture out of you at a very rapid speed. The other thing to remember is that beverages like coffee, sodas or alcohol actually dehydrate more than hydrate you. When you are dehydrated, your brain activity slows. Your reaction time is ess and you'll feel sleepy. That's not a good combination on a motorcycle. When you are summer riding with helmet and gear, it's easy to get overheated, especially if you get caught in traffic.

So staying fresh while you ride isn't just for comfort; it's a matter of motorcycle safety.

Here's some tips for staying cool:

• Make sure you wear clothes and gear that breathe

Kathy TollesonCEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

• Wear light colored gear for summer riding

• Drink lots of water (I know bathroom breaks aren't fun, but heat strokes aren't, either).

• Add a cup holder to your bike so your water is easily accessible.

• Use a cool gel neck wrap (I love mine!) or just rinsing a kerchief with water and putting it around the neck works.

• If you stop for a break, whenever possible look for a shady place.

• If it's an especially hot day, take a few extra breaks.

• Sunscreen helps you avoid sunburn that makes you hotter and is always a good idea.

• If you need to add heat shields or other devices to help shield you from the heat your motorcycle puts off, it's worth it.

So, enjoy your summer riding and remember to "stay fresh." You'll ride longer, ride safer, and feel good when you get there.

IXThe 2016 Tellico Bike Rally hit the ground running

in the rain, but that just meant cooler temperatures when it stopped. The Mountain Saloon was the high point for meeting new folks and old friends. The bands kept everyone rocking and the cute bartenders help keep the good times rolling.

Exit Sixty, Randy Woody & the Southbound Band, The Crew, CAB and John Gilmore rocked that stage like no others could. The bike show was a huge hit with tons of bikes and trophies were awarded the top participants as JD Vincent did his best comedy emceeing, keeping everyone laughing and having a great time.

The Wobble Wagon was not having much activity on Friday so I jumped aboard and before you knew it, the whole wagon was overloaded. Then the “Fire Marshal” showed up. I thought I was in deep trouble. NOPE, he wanted on board too! Woooooooooooo! As my good buddy John Wayne says, “Wagons. Hooooooo.”

The 4th Annual Southern Biker Magazine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament was again a great draw for something different to do. And yep, trophies were awarded and some of the participants continued to jab and tout their trophy at “some others”, huh William? LOL. All money donated to the event went to the Combat Casualty Relief Fund in support of the Tennessee National Guardsmen who are injured in combat.

Next year will be their 10th Anniversary and the boys (Mick, Wayne and Mike) aren’t saying much right now, BUT… it is being rumored that headliners will be BIIIIIIIGGGGGGGG!!! There will also be more stuff to do, more contests and larger trophies for all events. Remember to register early, show up early and get the spot you want so you can be prepared to get… Tellico’d!

If you can see the answer in front of you and still ask the question, consider this. If you’re the type person that has the question

of the day, “How far do I ride and what type roads do I ride on?” See the answer in front of you? Honda may have just hit another homerun from across the pond. Introducing the VFR1200X Crosstourer. It’s new to America but has been on the asphalt in Europe since 2012. Honda says this is its “range-topping Adventure Touring bike,” unique in the class by having a 1237cc V-Four engine and a choice of six-speed transmissions.

The VFR1200X is designed mostly for paved-road riding but has a unique ability to traverse the sometimes needed (or wanted) dirt and gravel roads.

The VFR1200X’s V4 isn’t just another engine—two rear cylinders are closer together than the front two, making the engine narrower where your legs are. Using Honda’s Unicam technology, it is overall short and compact along with the 28-degree phasing between crankpins that eliminate vibration. Smart engineering! It’s also a ride-by-wire (the VFR1200F was Honda’s first r-b-w bike) so you get the power you command the instant you crack the throttle.

It also comes with a choice of a conventional six-speed manual transmission or our third-generation automatic DCT: six speeds, push-button shifting, your choice of shift modes (See article in the May edition). The Automatic DCT model allows you to scroll between standard “D” mode, three sport modes, and even the option to “manually” shift up or down with the handlebar-mounted buttons. Lots of options for different riding adventures.

A spoked rear 17” wheel works on a single-sided swingarm and is wrapped in Pirelli’s new Scorpion Trail II tire (front 19”). This tire was built for traction on any surface you might have in mind to traverse.

Honda’s Combined ABS system is just what the riding doctor ordered to help keep you “high adventure riders” out of danger. Honda says it reduces the hydraulic pressure

2016 Honda VFR1200X…Back in BlackBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

being applied to the relevant brake and distributes the force optimally between both wheels. Thus allowing for more control and steering when needed.

Honda added some extra new stuff over the former “F” model to aid in the ride of today. A magnetic tankbag can house your electronics that can be charged from the 12V outlet located up top. Heated grips are a nice touch for cold weather as is the new manual windshield adjuster that lets you crank it up and down with your left hand on the fly.

A pristine running engine hits its marks at every turn with ergonomics designed into making your riding day a pleasure no matter how far you go or whether the road is smooth or rough.

Where will a new 2016 Honda VFR1200X adventure be? Only the roads know.

The 2016 Spring Redneck Rumble in Lebanon, Tennessee showcased

everything from rat rods to custom bikes to homemade creations of the Redneck kind. There were hundreds of every kind of car, truck, motorcycle and some new creation categories too, to look at. Some were there to compete for those highly-coveted Redneck Rumble trophies. Mike Finnegan, host of Roadkill was present to announce who the builders would be for this year’s “The Not Rod Challenge”. Chris Cox, Aaron Clements and Ed Carter/Brad Claussen will have until September to get their projects complete.

Looking at everything folks had to sell was quite amazing. Anything you needed and didn’t need was there in all those vendor booths. Everything from car parts to old school lunch boxes were being purchased from hundreds of people who came to take part in the event.

While there, I had a chance to chat with Shawn Cook, with the Music City Speed Nostalgia. Shawn lives in Lebanon, so this is one of his favorite shows to attend. Originally from Carthage, TN, Shawn has been vending at car shows for about 13 years. When you talk to Shawn, it’s obvious he loves what he does and really has a passion for it. I asked him

why, and he said he wanted to be able to preserve the past. He says his most memorable find was a 1957 Royal Crown sign that he found in the top of an abandoned barn that someone had spray painted. By the time he got it cleaned up, it looked 1,000 times better. Shawn says, “It’s just an awesome feeling to bring something back from the dead and into someone’s collection.” Check out his website at www.musiccityspeedandnostalgia.com .

The Redneck Rumble returns to Lebanon, TN at The James A. Ward Agricultural Center, September 16 & 17, and will have a huge swap meet, demolition derby, live music and more! If you want to have booth, visit Scooter’s website at www.bothbarrelspromotions.com. Come on out and don’t miss it!

We’ve all head the harrowing cries of a severely injured person and know that

sometimes, minutes can make the difference. Well, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, they are doing something to help make those minutes… Less. The FWBFD has added motorcycles to their fleet. They are wanting to make a difference where maybe they could have saved someone in the past or saved an arm or a leg.

The Rapid Incident Deployment and Early Response (RIDER) team was formed and new Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been modified. They now have a faster way to get to the scene of an accident or a fire and they will be hauling needed medical supplies with them. “We can maneuver these down sidewalks, in between cars, and that kind of stuff,” Battalion Chief Large said. “Get us initial boots on the ground. We are carrying cardiac monitors for advanced life support. They’ll be able to utilize those, get them on scene quicker and faster.”

Rising costs of such a big investment might sway some cities from doing this. But not in

Fort Walton Beach Fire Department Goes 2-WheelBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

this case. It’s a private-public partnership that could help change the way some dealerships and government officials begin to come together. In this case, Emerald Coast Harley-Davidson is leasing each cycle to the city of Fort Walton Beach for $1 per year. The FWBFD will have the riders trained and stock each bike with gear they already have. In a nutshell, this was a no-brainer.

Citing the successful integration of motorcycles in Daytona Beach and other cities, Chief Ken Perkins said, “When you get pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic that’s just log jammed down there it’s almost impossible to make a quick response. With downtown events growing every year, the department decided this would be an effective way to help people quickly.”

Maybe it’s time for other dealerships around the country to partner-up with their local fire departments. Talk about a Win-Win!

Serving Georgia and Alabama!

Motorcycle tires are arguably one of the most important parts of your motorcycle. Not only are they the reason

your bike moves; they’re the main point of contact between your motorcycle and the road. Their importance should therefore never be underestimated. If you’re serious about riding a motorcycle, you need to know how to invest in a pair of good quality tires as well as when to change them.

Choosing the right tires is important, because no two tires are alike. Broadly speaking, there are four different types of tires: Street, Dirt, Dual-sport/ADV or Cruiser. The right type of tire for you will depend upon your bike as well as your riding style and the terrain on which you typically ride. There are also a number of considerations when it comes to purchasing tires for your bike including brand, tube/tubeless, speed rating, tire construction, load rating, etc. Ultimately, you’ll have to make the decision about which tire is right for you based on your bike, riding style, and personal preferences.

For your safety, and to ensure that your bike is at optimal running condition, inspecting your tires should be carried out at least once a week. Regular check-ups and inspections will also help to ensure that your tires are in good shape and that they don’t pose a safety hazard to you when riding.

Motorcycle Tires - How to Choose Them & When

to Change Them Excerpts by Maximo Motos

Here’s what you should be looking for during these check-ups:

• Evaluate the overall condition of your tires

• Can you see any damage from impacts?

• Are there any abnormal signs of wear and tear?

• How is the tire pressure?

• How are the tread depths?

In addition to regular check-ups, there will be times when you’d need to change tires; Punctured tires being one. Tires have a life-span, and once they near their end, they begin to show signs of aging. Aging can be caused by a wide variety of factors. These include riding style and usage, typical load, how often maintenance work is or is not done, climate, how you store the bike, inflation pressure and the speed that you ride at. Abnormal wear is what occurs when there is a balancing or mechanical problem with your tires. Mechanical problems include worn brackets, shock absorbers, or transmissions. All of these factors affect the overall performance of the tire. It’s

important to get your tires checked regularly by a professional in order to determine how much longer you can use them.

All tires also have ‘born-on’ dates on them, or dates which indicate when they were manufactured. To locate this, look for a four-digit number at the end of the DOT markings. All tires which were made after the year 2000 have four digit codes as born on dates. For instance, your tire may say something like 5314; this means that it was made in the 53rd week of 2014. Most tire manufacturers recommend that you should change your tires every five years at least. If you’ve had your tire for longer, get it changed, even if it appears to be in good condition.

Motorcycle tires are literally what keep you rolling on the road. To make sure you’re safe while you’re riding, and that you have an enjoyable time on your motorcycle, it is important to have good quality tires. By seeing a licensed mechanic, this will help you determine whether your tires need to be changed or not.

, I've Been in an Accident, I can Handle This by Myself, Right?"

Unfortunately, many of us have been in an accident and likely dealt with an insurance

company or two, but did the insurance really make you whole? Could representation by an attorney have made a difference?

To answer these questions, let's layout two different scenarios:In the first scenario, you are riding your motorcycle and a

car runs you off the road, resulting in your bike being totaled, but thankfully you were not hurt.

The second scenario is identital to the first scenario, but unfortunately your leg is broken and you will be out of work until it can heal.

In the first scenario an attorney will not be very helpful because the only injury you suffered was property damage. Insurance companies keep records of the current values of cars, motorcycles, boats, etc. (similar to Kelly Blue Book) and they know what the present value of your ride is. You may have paid more for your bike, but like many other items, the value depreciates over time and often times the insurance company is only going to pay you what the current value is. An attorney may be able to negotiate a higher return for your ride, but you have to remember the attorney is going to get a cut of the recovered value or charge you an hourly rate. If you feel the insurance company is offering you too little, it is always the best practice to reach out to your local motorcycle attorney and see if anything can be done to get more.

In the second scenario an attorney is extremely helpful because not only was your bike totaled, but you were also hurt. Attorneys are well-suited to negotiate with insurance companies who in general do not have an incentive to settle your case for much over your medical bills, if not less than your medical expenses. An experienced attorney understands the ins and outs of the insurance industry and normally can negotiate a higher settlement from an insurance company. Generally, the greater the injuries, the greater your settlement. If an attorney is unable to negotiate a higher settlement, the attorney has the option to file a lawsuit against the person who caused the accident.

An attorney will also be able to advise you about issues such as comparative fault (whether you are partially at fault for the accident) or to determine who was at fault for the accident.

If you find yourself at-fault for an accident, be sure to contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Your insurance company will provide you with an attorney if an injured party files a lawsuit. If you do not have insurance be sure to contact an attorney about representation.

Whenever you are in doubt, if you might need an attorney or just have some questions about what you should do, the best practice is to contact your local motorcycle attorney for advice.

Sound Advice from Your Attorney

Hot weather, black pavement and traffic lead up to one thing…overheating Harley-Davidsons. Ever been in

a parade and your motorcycle just about quits on you from overheating? I have and have often wondered what I could do to help that situation. Enter Love Jugs electric cooling fans. They consist of a pair of hefty electric fans that when activated, will help to cool down those big V-Twins.

Hammerhead Engineering, LLC says that their products are the most powerful and effective fans available for Harleys and are waterproof. They’re rated at 252 CFM, which is said to be twice as much air as the nearest competitor. Having two separate fans allows them to be aimed directly at the individual cylinders and heads. The fan body is aircraft-quality stainless steel, polished to a high luster, and unlike painted or chromed metals, it can’t blister, chip, or rust. There’s also no welding used in the manufacturing process, which helps avoid metal fatigue in a high-vibration environment such as on a Harley engine.

It comes with everything you need to mount it directly onto your Harley and the mounting hardware for installation. “Read the instructions” and depending on your skill level, you should be able to install it within a couple of hours. For 2009 and newer models will require temporarily removing the gas tank so take that into consideration too. If you’re not sure about it, let your local Harley-Davidson dealer or independent motorcycle mechanic take care of it for you. An independent motorcycle shop should be able to do the job.

When the fans are switched on, they build up speed gradually until they emit a high-pitched whine along with a strong flow of air. The sound can just be heard above the engine (with stock exhaust) at idle; on the road the fans cannot be heard.

Love Jugs are available in bright metal or black finishes, in Bullet, Slot, and the new Cool-Master style.
