2013 Sanitarium Weetbix TRYathlon

Sunday 28 April, 2013

Langley Park If you are a Special Olympics athlete aged between 7-15 years, you could be part of an exclusive team to take part in the 2013 Sanitarium Weet-bix TRYathlon, the world’s largest triathlon of its kind. Entry fee is free thanks to our charity partners Bupa who will support athletes to participate at the Perth event through the Bupa Heroes Program. Selected athletes will take part in a swim, cycle and run that has been modified to allow youth with disabilities to participate. Just like Special Olympics, the TRYathlon is all about getting fit and having fun. And everyone gets a medal! Numbers are limited, so if you are interested in being part of the Bupa Heroes team, or for further enquiries, please contact;

Lesley Poole on 0416 465 870 or email at;

[email protected]

How are athletes selected to advance through the Competition Cycle? Quotas and Selections - What is a Quota? A quota is the maximum number of athletes which may participate in any competition depending on: the size and space in the venue and the time available to run the competition. Currently in SOWA there are no quotas in place for Regional or State Games as we have the capacity to cater for more athletes than currently competing. How does an athlete advance from one level of competition to the next? Where there is a quota established, athletes are selected through a random selection process in order to fill the quota. Step 1

If the number of eligible athletes is

the same as the quota, then all

gold medal winners progress. For

example, if the quota is 10 athletes

and there are 10 gold medal

winners, all athletes go through to

the next level of competition.

Step 2

If the number of gold medal

winners exceeds the quota, then

random selection of all gold medal

winners, will take place. For

example, if the quota is 10 athletes

and there is 15 gold medal winners,

random selection from the 15 gold

medal winners will take place, to

fill the quota of 10.

Step 3

If there are not sufficient gold medallists to fill the

quota, all gold medallists advance and the remaining

quota is filled by random selection of all eligible silver

medallists until the quota is filled. Again, if the quota

10 athletes, but there are 5 gold medal winners only,

these 5 automatically advance and the remaining 5 are

filled, again randomly, from all the silver medal

winners.

This process will continue sequentially until all places

are filled.

We have a State Selections Committee in WA which looks after selections of athletes for State travelling Teams (athletes, and where applicable team officials). There is also a Special Olympics Australia Selections Committee who conduct selections for National travelling teams. For more information see the Members Area on the Special Olympics Australia website. Remember: Athletes must compete in State Games 2013 in their chosen sport to be eligible to advance to the National Games in Melbourne 2014.
