ST. GREGORY’S YOUTH MINISTRY Mrs. Gloria Silva and Ms. Carmen Garza—Phone 210-342-3826

Due to this uncertain time, our Youth Group has no events or gatherings planned for this summer. We ask all our youth to remain in prayer. Below is a story and prayer to St. Aloysius Gozaga, Feast day, June 21 and saint for youth.

St. Aloysius Gonzaga was born in 1568 to a noble Italian family, the eldest of seven children, and was destined for the military. However, by the time he was 9 years of age he chose the religious life and made a personal vow of chastity. As a safeguard against sexual temptation he always kept his eyes downcast in the presence of women. Although many tried to dissuade him from his chosen vocation, he was eventually allowed to renounce his inheritance and enter the seminary in order to become a Jesuit priest. While he was studying in Rome, there was an outbreak of the plague. Aloysius volunteered to care for the sick, despite the delicateness of his own health. As a result, he contracted the disease and died at the age of 23, before completing his priestly studies. St. Aloysius was connected with two great figures of the Counter-Reformation: he received his First Holy Communion at the age of 12 from St. Charles Borromeo, and his Last Rites from St. Robert Bellarmine, both of whom served as his spiritual advisers. On the night of his death June 21, 1591, St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi had a vision of him being received into great glory. St. Aloysius Gonzaga is the patron saint of youth and bodily purity.

O Saint Aloysius, adorned with angelical manners, although I am thy unworthy servant, I recommend to thee in an especial manner the chastity of my soul and body; I conjure thee,

by thy angelical purity, to commend me to Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb, and to His most holy Mother, the Virgin of virgins. Amen.

Faith Formation Office RCIA - 210-342-5271 Classes have been cancelled until further notice

RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and is the means by which the Catholic Church presents her teachings to a variety of people, most of whom are interested in joining the church. Many are drawn to Catholic Doctrine and are eventually brought into the church, and we welcome everyone with open arms.

This preparation time from September to the Easter Vigil, is a journey of faith. It is an exciting process which will be transforming. St. Gregory’s RCIA program is intended to prepare you for sharing and deepening your faith with others who are on the same journey into the Catholic Faith. All are welcome to experience what it is to be Catholic.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) names the process by which interested persons gradually become members of the Catholic Church.

The R.C.I.A. is primarily a journey of faith: From the awareness of stirring of faith and curiosity within one’s heart, • through all those stages of asking and seeking, • through beginning involvement with Christian/Catholic people, • through hearing the Gospel proclaimed and by faithful reflection and prayer on this Word of God, • through study and discussion about the Catholic experience, • through doubts and hesitations, • through involvement in the works of charity and justice with those already committed to the catholic way of life, • through discernment of God’s call for them as individuals, • through the steps of commitment, • through the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) to a life of faith, love, and justice lived in communion with Catholics throughout the world.

Goal setting: A recipe for success Reaching a goal involves more than just hoping and dreaming. Here’s how your child can practice setting, tracking, and achieving goal – skills that will serve them well now and in the future. Be specific What would your youngster like to accomplish? Maybe they want to earn higher grades or become a better gymnast. Suggest that they narrow down the goal so it’s more targeted. The goal might be “I will turn in all of my assignments on time” or “I will move up one level in gymnastics this year.” Map it out Breaking a goal into small steps makes it feel more manageable. Your child could draw a winding road on paper, add lines to divide it into segments, and write a step in each one. Examples: “Put my planner in my backpack when school ends” or “Do my beam routine five times in a row without falling off.” They can color each step as they complete it. Check in Support your child in sticking to their plan. Say they fall behind on a long-term project, together, look at the planner and find slots of time where they can catch up. Or if they have to miss gymnastics class one day, offer ways to practice at home like using a strip of duct tape as a balance beam.
