Navigating the Desert Like Noah being prepared to navigate the Flood, so the Spirit sent Jesus into the desert. Why was he sent there? Did he need to learn something he didn’t know? Did he lack something he needed? Jesus as God didn’t lack anything, of course, but he needed time to pray, reflect, and prepare for his mission. He also wanted to set an example to follow. Another Scripture says he went into the desert to be tempted by the devil. That time of spiritual combat was helpful for him. We also need to go through trials and crises to grow both in our spiritual lives and human maturity. We each have had our desert where we are challenged to our core and stretched beyond our limits. Perhaps it was a crisis such as a health, employment, or relational issue. But it doesn’t always have to be such a dramatic event. It can be as simple and constant as the prolonged embracing of daily challenges in a manner that leads to life. We probably look back and see these as some of our best times—if we truly encountered ourselves and our Lord. The key is in peaceful acceptance, looking for what good can be learned from these inconveniences. In every cross there is a resurrection; in every storm a rainbow assures us of God’s presence and victory. It tells us that clouds and storms will not lead to total death, but rather to a purified rebirth, growth, and newfound life and strength. He has promised us this.

PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT

If there is one word that stands out in today’s readings, it is “covenant.” God’s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God’s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God’s goodness and fidelity to the promise. God shows us how to be good, not by decree, but by example. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.,

St. Andrew Parish Hall 9:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m.

Suffering comes in many personal forms—illness, death, family fractures, job loss, efforts and relationships undone. On top of that, we are affected by societal and global stresses. In this session, we take a look at how we can move from grief through grit to grace and gratitude. Insights from the prophet Jeremiah’s Book of Lamentations, Job, the epistles of St. Paul, and the writings of St. John Paul II give us some material for consolation and inspiration.

You may have noticed some barriers and extra cones placed in the parking lots. These denote areas that are off-limits for parking. Please use only designated parking areas! We have

had an ongoing problem with cars being parked along the planter areas, the roadways, and in the drop-off area. This is not only dangerous for fellow parishioners, it may block fire truck and ambulance access to our church. You may have to walk a few steps further, but you will help to keep our parish safe. Thank you for only parking in designated parking spots.

CALLING All WOMEN TO OUR

ANNUAL DAY OF REFLECTION

The theme this year will be “What about Lois and Eunice?” The Biblical Lois and Eunice are examples of the influence a devout grandmother and a faith-filled mother can have on the history of the Church and the world. At this Lenten day of reflection we will take a look at some of the well known and lesser known women who have shaped our faith. With a mix of input, prayer, and some light-hearted moments, we’ll consider: What about me? What about us?

This event will be held at Hampton Hall on Thursday, March 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with lunch served at 12 noon. The lunch will be 3 courses- salad, entrée and dessert. The entrée choices are Fines Herb chicken, Benne Seed crusted salmon or Portabella ravioli. The cost is $30. Please make your check payable to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and indicate on the memo line your choice of entrée. Mail your check to Lidia Marques, 82 Rose Bush Lane, Bluffton, SC 29909. Deadline for reservations is Friday, February 23.

ST. BLAISE

On Monday, February 5, Deacon Denny and Fr. Bob Spriggs visited SGGCS classrooms to bless the throats of students, staff and volunteers to honor the Feast Day of St. Blaise. Throats are traditionally blessed on the Feast Day (Feb. 1) for those with throat disorders or anyone who wishes to avoid them (or anything related to the throat, including the spoken word.) This special ceremony is considered a sacramental blessing of the Church and is done in remembrance of St. Blaise healing a young boy who was choking.

SOME LAST MINUTE REFLECTIONS 9

Lent 2018 ... is upon us and started with ASH WEDNESDAY, February 14! Let us always be mindful of the great love of Jesus for each one of us. His forty days in the desert become for each of us a model of how our practice of Lent could be. We fall back on the ancient disciplines of Lent as practiced by the Church over the centuries of time -- prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This tradition has been the hallmark of the Church.

PRAYER: Conversation with God. An opening of one's mind and heart to the promptings of the Holy Spirit: moments of praise, adoration and thanksgiving; moments of petition and seeking forgiveness; moments of the presence of the divine in our human condition. Jesus Christ, Son of God, shows us the way to effective communication with the Father. We must pray.

This prayer can be both private and communal. Private prayer is a matter of each one's personal choice of time and place. Community prayer imposes a discipline which brings us together to talk with God as a community of faith. Remember in your prayers all those who are in sacramental preparation programs: First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, Confirmation. Pray that the Lord Jesus Christ enliven in their hearts the gifts of the Holy Spirit that they may advance spiritually in wisdom and grace. Our traditional community prayer times during Lent are published in the Bulletin.

FASTING & ABSTINENCE: The discipline of the Church is not an invention of the twenty-first century. The practice of fasting is ancient -- in fact, pre-Christian. Sages of various ancient faiths always regarded fasting as a means of focusing attention on the divine. Bringing the body into submission forces one to take a long, hard look at the frailty of human nature and make every effort to bridge the chasm between God and us humans. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only two days of fasting. Other days may be chosen at one's discretion. All those who are over 18 years of age and under 59 are expected to observe the discipline of fasting. This means eating one meal enough to maintain and sustain one's health and two smaller portions. Liquids such as non-alcoholic beverages and fruit juices do not break the fast.

Closely related to the discipline of fasting is that of abstinence. This means refraining from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. This discipline is to be followed by all who are 14 years of age and older.

ALMSGIVING: The practice of almsgiving is certainly an inheritance from our Jewish roots. Special care and assistance was always given to the poor, the widowed and the orphaned. Such acts of kindness were done in gratitude for the gifts that one personally enjoyed. This reasoning has not changed. Once again, our private acts of kindness are to be encouraged. It is the community's acts of kindness that give us a collective spirituality and witness to the world.

Lent is also a good time for us to focus on RECONCILIATION -- both sacramental and in our interpersonal relationships. Sacramental Reconciliation is the prayerful admission of human faults and shortcomings that hinder one’s relationship with God and neighbor. Part of this process is the confession of sin through a priest (yes, through the priest: he is the mediator between God and humankind; he functions in the Name of Jesus; it is Jesus who forgives sin). Interpersonal reconciliation may or may not need sacramental signs of forgiveness. Our relationships with other people often bring us into conflict with opinions and attitudes that, sometimes, could be deliberately sinful; at other times, it may be an omission of a good deed or thought or word. To focus on our need for forgiving as well as the need to be forgiven is very much part of our tradition. May our loving God bless our efforts in the observance of Lent. And may our combined prayer, fasting and almsgiving bring the message of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness to the world around us.

With love, Fr. Derrick
