A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThis is Respect Life Sunday, when we once again recall the value of human life. The Gospel points to the sanctity of marriage in reflection of its purpose as intended at the beginning of creation. Husband and wife are to respect each other. This respect is to be carried out to the family and community and world. The true value of each person is to be recognized and respected as we move about our daily encounters. Can we honestly claim a life is only valuable when it is wanted and acceptable? Can we continue tolerating the streets where innocent lives are randomly gunned down? Can we judge the worth of anyone by his/her status and productivity or by what we can gain with them? Can we allow society to dictate who

is worth healing from those who are expendable? These are mature questions that deserve serious attention. Let this Sunday reopen our minds and hearts to our true worth…Children of God. Respect Life…it is the only one each one of us has!

Day of Evangelization at Saint John the Beloved Today, Sunday, October 7, 2018 From 9 AM to 3:00 PM in the nearby parish neighborhoods Purpose? Seeking souls to return to Mass Our Parish Legion of Mary and friends will visit, in groups of pairs, some nearby neighborhood homes (of parishioners) to extend welcome or greetings from our parish and inquire if anyone needs some physical or spiritual assistance from our parish. If they knock at your door, please welcome them for their brief contact and evangelization. Organized by The Legion of Mary, Wilmington Curia

Interesting story from Mrs. Nowell, Grade 3: This year I was met with a new challenge in my new classroom; lighting. With all of my fluorescent lights in my classroom, the glare on my Smart Board was so great that I was unable to leave the lights on while teaching. In my previous classroom, I was able to turn off one row of lights to reduce the glare so that it was visible without making the room too dark. In my new classroom, the light switches are not set in a way that this would work. Turning off one switch has little effect on the glare, and turning off the other switch creates a very dark environment. Because of this, the lights were being turned on and off frequently throughout the day.

A while back I had a professor that raved about setting the mood of a classroom with fluorescent light covers. I started to Google the concept to see if it was an efficient and cost effective fix. I was unsure if they were even safe. My search lead me to a number of sites selling magnetic fluorescent light covers. They ranged from soft white to light blue, and there were even covers with scenes. While the soft white would help slightly, I had heard that light blue filters can not only reduce the glare, but also offer a calming effect to the classroom environment.

The solution that I found was on multiple sites, but the easiest to order was through Amazon. The description states, “CREATE A CALM AND PLEASANT ENVIRONMENT: Create a calm and soothing classroom or office environment by decreasing glare and flickering from overhead fluorescent lights! REDUCE HARSH GLARE THAT CAUSES HEADACHES: Harsh glare and flickering lights can cause eyestrain, headaches, even anxiety.” https://www.amazon.com/Educational-Insights-Fluorescent-Filters-Tranquil/dp/B001YT3G5C

Once the filters were received, they were very easy to set up, and now I am able to keep the lights on in my room while using the Smart Board. The students are very excited about how the filters give the room a softer feel.

Marriage Moments: What does it mean to be a good life partner? Certainly it includes sharing life's tasks and supporting each other. Talk about what it would feel like to live alone. Name one thing you especially like about being married?

Parenting Pointers: During this Respect Life Month pick the life issue that you feel most strongly about (preventing abortion, supporting new mothers, helping those whose lives are mired in poverty, caring for the frail elderly, working for gun control, eliminating the death penalty, bullying...) Tell your child why this is important to you. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

Vocations: Today’s readings remind us that marriage is more that a social contract; indeed, it is God’s holy plan for most people. Some others He calls to the priesthood and/or religious life. The key to cooperating with God’s plan is to try to discern where He is calling you. If you think that might be to priesthood or religious life, please call or write Fr. Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113; [email protected]). Check out our website: www.cdow.org/vocations! General Intercessions: For strong and holy families, that by nurturing the faith of their children, parents may help them discern God’s will for their lives, we pray to the Lord!PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS: Priest: Let us pray for priestly and religious vocations. All: O God, we earnestly beseech Thee to bless the Church with many priests, brothers, and sisters, who will love Thee with their whole hearts, be faithful to their vocations, and gladly spend their entire lives to teach Thy truths, serve Thy Church, and to make Thee known and loved.Priest: Bless our families, bless our children. All: Choose from our homes those who are needed for Thy work. Priest: O Mary, Queen of priestly and religious vocations: All: Pray for us. Pray for our priests, seminarians, and religious. Obtain for us the grace of many more. Amen. (please offer your reception of Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month for vocations.) Prayer for Parents for Priestly and Religious Vocations: O God, grant that at least one of our sons may become a priest or religious brother, and one of our daughters a religious sister. We ourselves want to live as good Christians, and to guide our children always to do what is right, so that we may receive the grace, O God, to be allowed to give Thee a holy priest, brother, or sister! Amen. (Conclude with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.)
