Welcome one another, then, as Christ, welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Rom 15:7

Welcome to St. Mary’s!

We hope you’ve experienced the

hospitality and welcoming spirit

for which our parish is known.

Beyond the official parish

boundaries and center city, a

splendidly diverse number of

people have found their way to

make our cathedral parish their

spiritual home. Our century-old

school, vibrant youth ministry,

beautiful liturgies, strong religious

education for all ages, active laity,

noted catechumenate, over fifty

ministries, and our beautiful

cathedral church – all are some of

the reasons that draw people to

join our parish family.

We would love to have you!

If you are visiting or new, please

tell one of our ushers, deacons or

priest before or after Mass.

We also have “more information”

cards at the hospitality desk

(in our church Gathering Area next

to the Vestry) on which you can

request more information about

our church.

Notice also the list of staff for

contact information.

We are blessed to have you!

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER

UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

May 5, 2019

3rd Sunday of Easter

"Simon Peter said to them, 'I am going fishing.

'" Peter is a favorite apostle for many people. I wonder if it is

because of his flawed, relatable humanity.

Today's Gospel takes place after Jesus appears to the disciples

and breathes the Holy Spirit upon them. And yet, Peter finds

himself returning to his old way of life, to comfortable habits he

formed long before following Jesus. Is something still lingering

in him? Is something still lingering in us? Lent is over, and we

should be rejoicing! But do you feel like you're still holding onto

something? Or perhaps you had an excellent Lent.

You encountered Jesus in a new way and grew in faith. But as

the weeks since Easter have slipped by, some of your newfound

devotion has begun to waver. The closeness you felt in your

Lenten commitments has given way to humdrum status quo or

turn-of-the-season busyness.

"'Simon, son of John, do you love me?'" Peter has endured so

much in his walk of discipleship! But something is still weighing

on him. In today's Gospel, Jesus confirms Peter's devotion three

times, a redemption of his earlier threefold denial. The call of

the Lord must come again, as if heard anew for the first time.

So often, this is the pattern of the Christian life. We discover

God and experience a new desire for our faith, but in time, our

enthusiasm begins to wane. Perhaps something happens that

startles us, or we startle ourselves by a poor decision.

Then we discover God anew! Our joy returns...for a while.

Even the Apostles were no strangers to the cyclical nature of

spiritual growth. Our disappointments or frustrations should not

be cause for giving up. Like Peter, we too can recommit and

start anew.

This Sunday and every day of our lives, Jesus is waiting to say

again, "Follow me."

Baptism Steps at St. Mary's

1. Rejoice at the gift of new life!

2. Complete and turn in a Baptism

registration form by going online

(stmarysamarillo.com),calling or coming by

the Parish Office or finding one at our

Gathering Area desk in the church.

3. Parents and godparents who have

completed the Baptism registration form and

been active, stewarding members of

St. Mary's for at least six months will then be

notified by the Parish Office to come to their

respective Baptism Sunday Orientation.

4. Parish staff will direct parents and

godparents how to access and participate in

online preparation through formed.org as

well the next steps in readying themselves for

such a splendid responsibility.

5. Baptisms involving families who have

already been through preparation will then

occur at our weekend Masses every first

weekend of the month -- Baptism Sunday

•Our goal is that parents and godparents

engage in preparation while the parents are

still expecting which will result in a smoother

run up to the day of grace when their child is

baptized.

Catechesis Of The Good Shepard Training

This summer, St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Thomas the Apostle will host a formation retreat for those who wish to be trained to guide and instruct the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Christian for-mation program for children 3-6 years old in which a trained adult helps awaken children to their personal response to God. It seeks to create and facilitate a sacred, “hands-on” space for children called an atrium in which both the child and the adult can hear, ponder, and celebrate the most essential mysteries of the Christian faith as revealed in the Scriptures and Liturgy. If you feel a call to participate in this retreat and program, or would just like more information, please contact Jan Lane at 806-220-8852.

Registrations for this year’s Vacation Bible School will take place after all Masses on the weekends of May 5th and 12th. Registrations are also available online. To register online, please visit St. Mary’s website at www.stmarysamarillo.com. VBS will take place June 10th – 14th. For more information or questions, please contact Amelia Salazar: (806) 335-5511
