If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. The Baptism of our Lord by Fr. George Boronat

Jesus came to John, to be baptised by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.” Then he consent-ed. And when Jesus was baptised, he went up imme-diately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:13-17 “The Lord was Baptized,” explains St. Ambrose of Milan, “not to be cleansed Himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters might have the pow-er of Baptism”. During His Ascension, He told His disciples to go and baptise all people and they did exactly that. Saints have greatly valued this Sacrament. St Vin-cent Ferrer always celebrated the anniversary of his baptism and often went to kiss the baptismal font in the church of St Stephen in Valencia. After many years of absence, St Francis Solano went back to his hometown. Before doing anything else he knelt and rested his forehead on the font of the church where he was baptised and sang the Creed. When St Jose-maría found out that they were discarding the font where he was baptised, he arranged for it to be brought to his chapel and kissed it every time he passed by it. Do you know the date of your baptism? A young woman came to see the parish priest to dis-cuss what was needed for her conversion to the Catholic Church. She explained that she had been reading the Gospel, fell in love with Jesus, and want-ed to be a Catholic. The priest was surprised that no

one had instructed her or talked to her about our faith. “No one has taught you anything about the faith?” asked the astonished priest. “That’s strange! You must have had a bit of guidance from someone.” The girl explained: “No one, father. Nobody, since I was bap-tised as a baby…” “But you were baptised?!…” the priest interrupted her, and with a smile he added: “I rest my case!” Of course Someone had been helping her. Baptism made her a temple of the Holy Spirit. He had been helping her for many years…from inside! The great St. Antony, the abbot who had spent long years in the desert, passing whole nights in prayer and performing severe penances, aware of how important the virtue of humility is in the spiritual life, asked God to make him profoundly humble. In answer to his prayer, the Almighty directed him to visit two ladies in the neighboring city, who though simple and unpretentious in their manner of life, were, so God told Antony, holier than he who had spent long years in the practice of rigorous penance and un-ceasing prayer. On entering their home, the Saint sought to discover the secret of such remarkable holiness; he asked them many questions as to the fasts they made, the length of their prayers, their austerities and the like so that he might imitate them. He was not a little surprised to learn that they did nothing exceptional. They observed the fasts of the Church; they said their prayers devoutly; they gave what little alms they could afford; they frequented the Sacraments, heard daily Mass and practiced the ordi-nary Christian virtues. What impressed the saint most was that they loved God very simply but very sincerely. God was the great reality in their lives. They did all their actions for love of Him. They performed their daily duties, seeing God in all they did. They accepted what hap-pened to them, joys as well as sorrows, as coming di-rectly from His hand. That was all, but it sufficed to explain to the Saint the secret of their wonderful sanctity, viz., they performed their duties well and they loved God. (Excerpt from An Easy Way to Become a Saint)

Entonces Jesús fue desde Galilea hasta el Jordán y se presentó a Juan para ser bautizado por él. Juan se resistía, diciéndole: «Soy yo el que tiene necesi-dad de ser bautizado por ti, ¡y eres tú el que viene a mi encuentro!». Pero Jesús le respondió: «Ahora déjame hacer esto, porque conviene que así cumpla-mos todo lo que es justo». Y Juan se lo permitió. Apenas fue bautizado, Jesús salió del agua. En ese momento se abrieron los cielos, y vio al Espíritu de Dios descender como una paloma y dirigirse hacia él. Y se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: «Este es mi Hijo muy querido, en quien tengo puesta toda mi predilección». ~Mateo 3:3-17 "El Señor fue bautizado", explica San Ambrosio de Milán, "no para limpiarse a sí mismo, sino para lim-piar las aguas, para que esas aguas puedan tener el poder del Bautismo". Durante Su Ascensión, Él les dijo a Sus discípulos que fueran y bautizaran a todas las personas y ellos hicieron exactamente eso. Los santos han valorado mucho este sacramento. San Vicente Ferrer siempre celebró el aniversario de su bautismo y solía besar la pila bautismal en la iglesia de San Esteban en Valencia. católica. El cura se sorprendió de que nadie le había instruido o hablado sobre nuestra fe. "¿Nadie te ha enseñado algo sobre la fe?", Preguntó el sacerdote asombrado. "¡Eso es extraño! Debes haber tenido un poco de guía de alguien ". La niña explicó:" Nadie, padre. Nadie, desde que me bauticé cuando era una bebé ... "" ¡Pero si te bautizaron?! ... "el sacerdote la interrumpió, y con una sonrisa agregó:" ¡Descanso mi caso! El bautismo la convirtió en templo del Espíritu Santo. Él la había estado ayudando durante muchos años ... ¡desde adentro! El gran San Antonio, el abad que había pasado largos años en el desierto, pasando noches enteras en oración y realizando severas penitencias, consciente de lo im-portante que es la virtud de la humildad en la vida es-piritual, le pidió a Dios que lo hiciera profundamente humilde. En respuesta a su oración, el Todopoderoso le ordenó que visitara a las dos señoras en la ciudad vecina, que, aunque eran sencillas y sin pretensiones, eran, según dijo Dios a Antonio, más santas que el, que había pa-sado muchos años practicando rigurosamente la peni-tencia y la oración incesante. Al entrar en su hogar, el Santo buscó descubrir el se-creto de una santidad tan notable; les hizo muchas preguntas sobre los ayunos que hicieron, la duración de sus oraciones, sus austeridades y lo demás para que pudiera imitarlas. No le sorprendió un poco saber que no hicieron nada excepcional. Observaban los ayunos de la Iglesia; de-cían sus oraciones con devoción; daban las pequeñas limosnas que podían permitirse; frecuentaban los sa-cramentos, escuchaban la misa diaria y practicaban las virtudes cristianas. Lo que más impresionó al santo fue que amaban a Dios muy simple pero muy sinceramente. Dios era la gran realidad en sus vidas. Hacían todas sus acciones por amor a Él. Cumplían sus tareas diarias, viendo a Dios en todo lo que hacían. Aceptaban lo que les su-cedía, tanto las alegrías como las tristezas, como pro-venientes directamente de Su mano. On entering the sacred edifice, every good Christian takes holy water, crosses himself devoutly, and, reaching the altar or passing before the Blessed Sacrament, he genu-flects. His faith causes him to remember that he is in the presence of God, and, in order to re-new this faith, he says, in the words of Scripture: “How terrible is this place! This is no oth-er than the house of God and the gate of heaven! Put off the shoes from thy feet, from the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. I will come into Thy house; I will worship to Thy Holy Temple in Thy fear.” To adore God, O Christian, is to acknowledge His supreme dominion, and to submit oneself absolutely to Him, both in heart and in soul. To adore the incar-nate Word present in the Most Holy Sacrament is to acknowledge that He is the Creator. “Omnia per ip-sum facta sunt” – “all things,” says St. John, “were made by Him.” It is to acknowledge the He is the sovereign Lord, the Son of God, Who became the dear Redeemer of souls. Once again, to adore Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament is to offer to Him all that we possess, both in the order of nature and in that of grace; it is to submit wholly to Him our un-derstanding and our will; our understanding, in order to believe all the truths which He has revealed to us, our will, in order to keep all His commandments. Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist has a right to our adoration. When Moses was approaching the bush that was on fire, he heard a voice which said: “Put off the shoes from thy feet for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” The furnace of the love of Jesus Christ for men is the Eucharist; for nineteen centuries He has burned there without be-ing consumed. Be faithful Christian souls, to the important duty of adoring Jesus Christ whenever you enter a church. At the solemn moment of the elevation; when He is exposed upon the altar; when you are present at Ben-ediction of the Most Holy Sacrament; on all these occasions adore Jesus Christ present in the Sacra-ment of His love.
