Discernment by Servant of God, John Hardon, S. J.

We hear a great deal these days about the discern-ment of spirits. And well we might because there is great need for supernatural prudence to distinguish between what is truly Christian and Catholic, and what only pretends to be either or both. With all this preoccupation, however, with discern-ment it is imperative that we keep things simple and not get lost in theological speculation. The plain question is: How can we, practically speaking, know the difference between an inspira-tion from Christ and a temptation from the anti-christ? A good rule of thumb is to ask what side of our na-ture the impulse favors. Does it favor self-will or does it favor self-sacrifice” If it favors self-will, we can be sure the impulse is not from God, because self-will is another name for pride. If it favors self-sacrifice, we can be equally sure the impulse is from God, because self-sacrifice is another name for hu-mility –and humility is certainly the sign of the pres-ence of the Lord. This simple rule is more useful than may appear on the surface. How many times a week and, for some of us, a day, we are conscious of contrary move-ments battling for the mastery of our souls. These movements take on countless different forms and they are almost infinite in variety. We ask ourselves, I wonder if this feeling is a good one? Should I resist it or give in to it? I wonder if this idea is a sound one? Does God want me to fol-low it or ignore it? How can I tell? So we return to what we had just said before. We apply the norm of self-will or self-sacrifice, and we cannot go wrong. At the heart of Christ’s teaching to His followers is the message He gave us, namely the doctrine of humble self-denial. He invariably leads those to whom He is drawing to Himself by inspir-ing them to love His will more than their own, in a word, to die to themselves in the performance of what He wants them to do. Obtain for us courage to embrace God’s will as revealed to us in the depths of our hearts and in the events of our lives. ST. JOSEPH, loving husband and father, you knew the fear of fleeing your country, seeking safety and shelter for your family. Help today’s immigrants and refugees, the poor and the starving. Guide us that we may seek paths of peace, truth and hospitality. ST. JOSEPH, man of faith and prayer, deepen in us respect for God’s gift of life in the wonders of all cre-ation. With confidence in your powerful intercession, we entrust these and all our needs into your care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Suppose I were to find myself placed at the oven of a smith so that my whole body was in the open air but for one arm placed in the fire, and that God were to preserve my life for a thousand years in this position. Would this not be an unbearable torture? Hoy escuchamos mucho sobre el discernimiento de los espíritus. Y bien podríamos hacerlo porque hay una gran necesidad de prudencia sobrenatural para distinguir entre lo que es verdaderamente Cristiano y lo Católico, y lo que solo pretende ser uno o ambos. Sin embargo, con toda esta preocupación, con discer-nimiento, es imperativo que mantengamos las cosas simples y que no nos perdamos en la especulación teo-lógica. La simple pregunta es: ¿Cómo podemos, hablando en términos prácticos, saber la diferencia entre una inspi-ración de Cristo y una tentación del anticristo? Una buena regla empírica es preguntar qué parte de nuestra naturaleza favorece el impulso. ¿Favorece la voluntad propia o favorece el auto-sacrificio? Si favo-rece la voluntad propia, podemos estar seguros de que el impulso no proviene de Dios, porque la voluntad propia es otro nombre para el orgullo. Si favorece el auto-sacrificio, podemos estar igualmente seguros de que el impulso proviene de Dios, porque el auto-sacrificio es otro nombre para la humildad, y la humil-dad es ciertamente el signo de la presencia del Señor. Esta regla simple es más útil de lo que puede aparecer en la superficie. Cuántas veces a la semana y, para algunos de nosotros, un día, somos conscientes de los movimientos contrarios que luchan por el dominio de nuestras almas. Sorrow [for sins] is an intention to abandon the ego. It is hard. Sometimes it is like being skinned alive, peel-ing away sins and getting rid of some of them, taking on a firm purpose of amendment…I believe that most people are sorry for their sins not just because they dread the loss of heaven and fear hell, it is because they have hurt our Lord. After all, it is the Cross that reveals the dimension of sin. No one ever thoroughly sees sin in its utter nakedness until he understands re-demption. Take the errors and the stupidity and the crimes of every day. People summarize them by say-ing, “Oh what a fool I made of myself!” There is a world of difference between that and, “Oh, what a sin-ner I am!”
