The Feast of the Holy Trinity

From Advent until today, the Church has had us consider the magnificent manifesta-tions of God’s mercy toward men: the Incarnation, the Re-demption, Pentecost. Now she directs our attention to the source of these gifts, the most Holy Trinity, from whom everything proceeds. Spontaneously, there rises to our lips the hymn of gratitude expressed in the Introit of the

Mass: “Blessed be the Holy Trinity and undivided Unity; we will give glory to Him, because He has shown His mercy to us”: the mercy of God the Father, “who so loved the world that He gave it His only-begotten Son” (cf. Fn 3, 16); the mercy of God the Son, who to redeem us became incarnate and died on the Cross; the mercy of the Holy Spirit, who deigned to come down into our hearts to communicate to us the charity of God and to make us participate in the divine life. The Church has very fittingly included in the Office for today the beautiful antiphon inspired by St. Paul: “Caritas Pater est, gratia Filius, communi-catio Spiritus Sanctus, O beta Trinitas!”; the Father is charity, the Son is grace and the Holy Spirit is com-munication: applying this, the charity of the Father and the grace of the Son are communicated to us by the Holy Spirit, who diffuses them in our heart. The marvelous work of the Trinity in our souls could not be better synthesized. Today’s Office and Mass form a veritable paean of praise and gratitude to the Blessed Trinity; they are a prolonged Gloria Patri and Te De-um. These two hymns-one a succinct epitome, and the other a majestic alternation of praises-are truly the hymns for today, intended to awaken in our hearts a deep echo of praise, thanksgiving, and adoration. Today’s feast draws us to praise and glorify the three Persons of the Blessed Trinity, not only because of the great mercy They have shown to men, but also and especially in Themselves and for Themselves: first, by reason of Their supreme essence which had no begin-ning and will never have an end; next, because of Their infinite perfections, Their majesty, essential beauty and goodness. Equally worthy of our adoration is the sublime fruitfulness of life by which the Father continually generates the Word, while from the Father and the Word proceeds from the Holy Spirit. The

Father is not prior to, or greater to the Word; nor are the Father and the Word prior to or greater than the Holy Spirit. The three divine Persons are all co-eternal and equal among Themselves: the divinity and all the divine perfections and attributes are one and the same in the Father, in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit. What can man say in the presence of such a sublime mystery? What can he understand of it? Nothing! Yet what has been revealed to us is cer-tain, because the Son of God Himself, “who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him” (Fn 1, 18). But the mystery is so sublime and it so exceeds our understanding, that we can only bow our heads and adore in silence. “O the depth of the riches of the wisdom of the knowledge of God! How incom-prehensible are His judgments, and how unsearcha-ble His ways!” exclaims St. Paul in today’s Epistle (Rom 11, 33-36). He who, having been “caught up into paradise,” could neither know nor say anything except that he had "heard secret words which it is not granted to man to utter” (2 Cor 12, 2-4). In the presence of the unspeakable mystery of the Trinity the highest praise is silence, the silence of the soul that adores, knowing that it is incapable of praising or glorifying the divine Majesty worthily. Colloquy “You are the supreme and infinite Good, good above all good; good which is joyful, incomprehensible, inestimable; beauty exceeding all other beauty; wis-dom surpassing all wisdom, because You are Wis-dom itself. Food of angels, giving Yourself with fire of love to men! You are the garment which covers our nakedness; You feed us, hungry as we are, with Your sweetness, because You are all sweetness with no bitterness. Clothe me, O eternal Trinity, clothe me with Yourself, so that I may pass this mortal life in true obedience and in the light of the most holy faith with which You have inebriated my soul” (Excerpt from Divine Intimacy)

Santa María Magdalena OCD Desde el Adviento hasta hoy, La Iglesia nos ha hecho con-siderar las manifestaciones sublimes de la misericordia de Dios con los hombres: La Encarnación, La Redención, Pentecostés; y ahora endereza nuestra mirada a la fuente de tales dones, a la Santísima Trinidad, de quien todo pro-viene, de modo que aflora espontáneamente a los labios el himno de reconocimiento

entonado en el «Intoito» de la Misa: «Bendita sea la Trinidad santa y la indivisa Unidad: la ensalzaremos porque volcó sobre nosotros su misericordia». La mi-sericordia de Dios Padre «que amo al mundo hasta entregar por el a su Unigénito» (Jn. 3,16) misericordia de Dios Hijo que, para redimirnos, se encarnó y murió en la Cruz; misericordia del Espíritu Santo, que se dignó bajar a nuestros corazones para comunicarnos la caridad de Dios, para hacernos partícipes de la vida divina. Muy oportunamente la Iglesia ha incluido en el oficio divino del día la bella antífona de resonancias paulinas: «Caritas Pater est, gratia Filius, communi-catio Spiritus Sanctus, beata Trinitas»; el Padre es caridad, el Hijo es gracia y el Espíritu Santo es la co-municación de ambas o sea, la caridad del Padre y la gracia del Hijo nos son comunicadas por el Espíritu Santo que las infunde en nuestros corazones. No se puede sintetizar mejor la obra maravillosa de la Trini-dad a favor de nuestras almas. Por eso el Oficio divino y la Misa de hoy son un himno de agradecimiento y alabanza a la Santísima Trinidad, son como un Gloria Patri y un Te Deum continuados. Y estos dos himnos, el uno en su compendiosa brevedad, y el otro en su majestuoso alternarse de alabanza, son los himnos propios del día, destinados a excitar en nuestros cora-zones un eco profundo de alabanza, de agradecimien-to, de adoración. Pero la fiesta de hoy nos invita a alabar y ensalzar a la Trinidad Santísima, no solo por las misericordias in-mensas que uso con los hombres, sino también y sobre todo en si por sí misma. Por su Ser supremo, que ja-más tuvo principio y nuca tendrá fin, por su perfeccio-nes infinitas, por su majestad, belleza y bondad esen-ciales; por su sublime fecundidad de vida, por la que el Padre engendra incesantemente al Verbo y del Pa-dre y del Verbo procede el Espíritu Santo, sin que el

Padre sea anterior ni superior al Verbo, ni el Padre y el Verbo sean anteriores ni mayores que el Espíritu Santo, pues las tres personas divinas son coeternas e iguales entre sí; por la Divinidad y todas las perfec-ciones y atributos divinos, que son únicos e idénti-cos en el Padre, en el Hijo y en el Espíritu Santo. ¿Qué puede decir y entender el hombre de cara a un misterio tan sublime? Nada. Sin embargo, lo que sabemos es cierto, porque el mismo Hijo de Dios «el Unigénito Hijo, el que está en regazo del Padre, es quien nos lo dio a conocer» (Jn. 1,18). Pero el miste-rio es tan sublime y superior a nuestra comprensión que solo podemos inclinar la cabeza y adorar en si-lencio. «¡Oh, profundidad de la riqueza y de la sabi-duría y de la ciencia de Dios! ¡Cuán insondables son sus juicios e inescrutables sus caminos» exclama San Pablo en la Epístola del día (Rom. 1,33-36), él, que a pesar de haber sido «arrebatado al paraíso», no supo ni pudo decir más que «oyó palabras inefables que no es concedido al hombre hablar» (II Cor. 12,2-4) De cara al misterio altísimo de la Trinidad se siente realmente que la más bella alabanza es el si-lencio, el silencio del alma que adora, reconociéndo-se incapaz de expresar una alabanza adecuada a la divina Majestad. Coloquio "Tú eres el Bien sumo e infinito, Bien superior a to-do bien, Bien feliz, Bien incomprensible, Bien ines-timable, Belleza superior a toda belleza, Sabiduría superior a todo sabiduría porque eres la Sabiduría misma Tú, alimento de los ángeles, te diste a los hombres con fuego de amor; Tú, vestido que cubre mi desnudez, no sacias a nosotros hambrientos con toda dulzura, porque eres todo dulce, sin mezcla de amargura. Revísteme, ¡Oh Trinidad eterna!, revíste-me de ti misma, para que transcurra la vida mortal en la obediencia sincera y en la luz de la fe santa con que embriagaste mi alma!

Mary proclaims the greatness of the Lord working in her

by Saint Bede My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour. With these words Mary first acknowledges the special gifts she has been given. Then she recalls God's universal favours, be-stowed unceasingly on the human race. When a man devotes all his thoughts to the praise and service of the Lord, he proclaims God's greatness. His observance of God's commands, moreover, shows that he has God's power and greatness always at heart. His spirit rejoices in God his saviour and de-lights in the mere recollection of his creator who gives him hope for eternal salvation. These words are often for all God's creations, but especially for the Mother of God. She alone was chosen, and she burned with spiritual love for the son she so joyously conceived. Above all other saints, she alone could truly rejoice in Jesus, her saviour, for she knew that he who was the source of eternal salvation would be born in time in her body, in one person both her own son and her Lord. For the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. Mary attributes nothing to her own merits. She refers all her greatness to the gift of the one whose essence is power and whose nature is greatness, for he fills with greatness and strength the small and the weak who believe in him. She did well to add: and holy is his name, to warn those who heard, and indeed all who would receive his words, that they must believe and call upon his name. For they too could share in everlasting holi-ness and true salvation according to the words of the prophet: and it will come to pass, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is the name she spoke of earlier: and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour. Therefore it is an excellent and fruitful custom of holy Church that we should sing Mary's hymn at the time of evening prayer. By meditating upon the in-carnation, our devotion is kindled, and by remem-bering the example of God's Mother, we are encour-aged to lead a life of virtue. Such virtues are best achieved in the evening. We are weary after the day's work and worn out by our distractions. The time for rest is near, and our minds are ready for contemplation.

"Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Señor, se alegra mi espíritu en Dios mi salvador. Con estas palabras, María reconoce en primer lugar los dones sin-gulares que le han sido concedidos, pero alude también a los beneficios co-munes con que Dios no deja nunca de favorecer al género humano. Proclama la grandeza del Señor el alma de aquel que consagra todos sus afectos interiores a la alabanza y al servicio de

Dios y, con la observancia de los preceptos divinos, de-muestra que nunca echa en olvido las proezas de la majes-tad de Dios. Se alegra en Dios, su salvador, el espíritu de aquel cuyo deleite consiste únicamente en el recuerdo de su creador, de quien espera la salvación eterna. Estas palabras, aunque son aplicables a todos los santos, hallan su lugar más adecuado en los labios de la Madre de Dios, ya que ella, por un privilegio único, ardía en amor espiritual hacia aquel que llevaba corporalmente en su seno. Ella con razón pudo alegrarse, más que cualquier otro santo, en Jesús, su salvador, ya que sabía que aquel mismo al que reconocía corno eterno autor de la salvación había de nacer de su carne, engendrado en el tiempo, y ha-bía de ser, en una misma y única persona, su verdadero hijo y Señor. Porque el Poderoso ha hecho obras grandes por mí: su nombre es santo. No se atribuye nada a sus méritos, sino que toda su grandeza la refiere a la libre donación de aquel que es por esencia poderoso y grande, y que tiene por nor-ma levantar a sus fieles de su pequeñez y debilidad para hacerlos grandes y fuertes. Muy acertadamente añade: Su nombre es santo, para que los que entonces la oían y todos aquellos a los que habían de llegar sus palabras comprendieran que la fe y el recurso a este nombre había de procurarles, también a ellos, una participación en la santidad eterna y en la verdadera salva-ción, conforme al oráculo profético que afirma: Todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor se salvará, ya que este nombre se identifica con aquel del que antes ha dicho: Se alegra mi espíritu en Dios mi salvador. Por esto se introdujo en la Iglesia la hermosa y saludable costumbre de cantar diariamente este cántico de María en la salmodia de la alabanza vespertina, ya que así el recuer-do frecuente de la encarnación del Señor enardece la devo-ción de los fieles y la meditación repetida de los ejemplos de la Madre de Dios los corrobora en la solidez de la vir-tud. Y ello precisamente en la hora de Vísperas, para que nuestra mente, fatigada y tensa por el trabajo y las múlti-ples preocupaciones del día, al llegar el tiempo del reposo, vuelva a encontrar el recogimiento y la paz del espíritu."
