Fourth SUNDAY OF ADVENT & Christmas 2017 Dear Parishioners:

Last week we encountered one of those seasonal phenomena – snowfall – that because of its timing and magnitude was able to discombobulate the best-made plans. We had a Communal Reconciliation Service scheduled for Wednesday evening at St. Thomas Aquinas; four priests were going to join me for the event. I had 125 copies of the Order of Worship ready to go. I left SJB to return to STA around 3 p.m.; the drive north wasn’t too bad, although the roads were getting a little slick. When I walked into the office at STA, Chris Holzmann (our Business Manager at STA) told me that two of the other four priests had called to say they weren’t coming because of road conditions. A third had told me the day before that if the weather turned out to be as bad as predicted, he wasn’t going to risk the drive. I called the fourth (who would have had the longest and probably most treacherous drive of all, coming from Marytown), and told him to stay home. At 6:30, we had one priest (me), about thirty peni-tents who’d braved the elements, two choir members and a pianist/organist (Janell Nielsen). So, the service went on as sched-uled, and we wrapped things up with a final song in under an hour,

I don’t have to be particularly clairvoyant to say that during the months ahead we’re going to get hit with conditions –blizzards, heavy icing, power outages, etc. – that will threaten to disrupt regular Church routines. Whether those routines are Penance services, weekend or weekday Masses, or other liturgical services, to lift a line or two from the SJB Inclement Weather Policy:

No event, including Mass, requires your attendance if you feel that weather conditions are dangerous. It is your right and responsibility to determine whether it is safe and/or wise to travel when road conditions may be hazardous. Weekend Mass will not ordinarily be cancelled due to weather conditions. However, please do not travel if you feel un-safe or the roads near you are not passable. Individuals are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass if they cannot attend due to bad weather even if Mass is not cancelled.

Speaking of inclement weather, word from one who departs from Wisconsin each year by November 1st and refuses to return before the following April 1st arrived from Baja California this past week. Father John and Turk are “wintering” on the beach in Playa Coyote, eighteen miles south of Mulege, Baja California, Mexico. He says, through crocodile tears, that he misses all of us and wishes we were there. He would love to hear from you via e-mail ([email protected]) or by “snail mail” addressed to him at 158 Rainbow Dr. #5849, Livingston, TX 77399-1058.

Finally, a merry, safe and truly blessed Christmas to all of you from me and our staffs at St. John the Baptist and St. Thomas Aquinas Parishes.

Father Phil

Father Phil will be offering the

Sacrament of the Anointing of the

Sick, December 30th following the

5:30pm Mass & December 31st at SJB

following the 9:30am Mass.

And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the

angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2: 13-14

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Do you know what I consider to be the best thing about Christmas? The fact that it doesn’t have to end. Christmas should not just be another passing holiday. The birth of Christ allows us to live out the spirit of Christmas each and every day. We can do this by treasuring the gift of God’s love on a daily basis. This year, my Christmas wish for you is to work towards a deeper and more intimate relationship with our Lord. How can you do this? Make prayer the highlight of your day, com-mit to read the Bible regularly, devote time to attend Mass, go to Confession, care for those entrusted in you and help others in need. There are many faith-filled opportunities within the Archdi-ocese of Milwaukee to cultivate and strengthen your relationship with Christ – it is simply a matter of choosing and seeking. May the peace, joy, and love of the Holy Family be present in your lives each day of the New Year. I Am, Sincerely Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee
