The epiphany ~ January 7, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Among the new and exciting things that 2018 is bringing to us is the possibility that the Living Way of the Cross may be coming to SJB! This particular version, directed by Mary Jo Moody, has been a Lenten treat in eastern Fond du Lac County for the past twenty-four years. As a middle school religion teacher at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic School in Eden for many of those years, Mary Jo had worked with faculty, students and their parents to create a consistently powerful and artistic dramatiza-tion of the Way of the Cross. Enactments were usually performed in Shepherd of the Hills Church, but Mary Jo also “took the show on the road” to selected other parishes and some local nursing homes. (It even came to SJB once, about ten years ago.) Mary Jo left Shepherd of the Hills last Spring and now teaches at the Holyland Catholic School in Johnsburg. (That’s the school emerging from the merger a few years ago of St. Cloud in St. Cloud, Holy Cross in Mt. Calvary, and St. Joseph in St. Joseph, as augmented by students from St. John the Baptist in Johnsburg and St. Mary’s in Marytown.) Shepherd of the Hills was no longer interested in hosting the Living Way of the Cross, and Mary Jo soon learned that since Holyland already had a student-centered Lenten presentation it couldn’t accommodate the LWOC, either. I was asked if SJB might be willing to host it this year. I ran the idea past staff at a meeting shortly before Christmas, and they were excited about the possibility. So, we had an organizational meeting in late December and looked at calendars (basketball season, Spring Break, rehearsal dates and times, etc.); we’re aware of some potential conflicts (like with SJB’s Spring musical and student standardized testing periods). We’d like to open participation to parochial school and faith formation (both grade and high school) students from SJB, STA, Shepherd of the Hills Parishes and St. Mary’s Springs, which might make for a communication nightmare. And be-cause this is a different scenario than in years past at Shepherd of the Hills, rehearsals would all have to be totally after school, not during religion classes or break periods during the school day as happened before. We’d like to have an informational meeting with interested students and the parents of students who are in grade school on Tuesday, January 16th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Church here at SJB. If the response is sufficient, and IF we can surmount the speed-bumps mentioned above, rehearsals will begin in February on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. More details to follow.
