1 Maintenance1An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; an old adage that still rings true. Your GLOBAL Wastewater Treatment System / Global System has been designed for many years of dependable service, but as with any system, proper inspection and maintenance is essential. Corrosion is the primary concern in regard to the long-term structural integrity of the basins. GLOBAL utilizes galvanized sheets, cathodic protection and an epoxy coating as a standard three-level protection against corrosion. Inspection, detection and repair are the keys to long service life. We suggest implementing the following as part of the a regularly scheduled maintenance program for corrosion and overall basing integrity:

1. Keep exterior surfaces free of debris and foreign materials. Maintain a clean plant site.

2. Accumulated organic material, clinging to the interior walls, should be removed by scrubbing or power washing.

3. Inspect the integrity of the coating for scratches, abrasion or peeling. Promptly remove loosened material, clean and re-coat.

4. The anodes should be checked annually to verify proper working condition. Refer to manufactures testing procedures.

5. Inspect for any obvious foundation settlement. Major settlement may cause structural failure of basins.

6. Inspect for any deterioration or looseness of bolts or fasteners.

7. GLOBAL strongly suggests that any mechanical, electrical or auxiliary equipment installed in or on the basin be checked on a yearly basis by a qualifi ed service technician.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONSA. You may decide to buy and install “auxiliary equipment” made by other manufacturers. GLOBAL has no control over the design and manufacture of this equipment. If you buy and install auxiliary equipment, then at a minimum we suggest that you do the following:

1. Obtain, read, and understand the instructions and cautions of the auxiliary equipment manufacturer. Be sure all equipment is installed according to the manufacturers recommendations.

2. Check with GLOBAL TREATMENT SYSTEMS or your dealer that your basin is designed to support any additional loads supplied by the auxiliary equipment.

3. Obtain any applicable safety decals from the manufacturer of the auxiliary equipment and insure they are displayed in a visible location.

4. Make sure all electrical equipment is properly installed and grounded by a qualifi ed electrician.

5. Check availability and operation of electrical lockout and emergency stop systems.

6. Be sure all guards or shields are securely in place.

7. Store all operations/maintenance manuals in a safe place available for future use.

B. In this and other manuals, shields and guards may have been removed for illustrative purposes. Do not operate the equipment without shields and guards in place. Failure to heed this warning may result in serious personal injury or death.

C. The relatively closed environment of a basin may promote the presence of toxic molds, hazardous dust, or a lack of oxygen. Never enter such basins without proper respiration equipment and someone else present to watch you.

D. Heed the warning decals shown on pages 10 - 11.

E. When climbing basin sidewall and roof ladders, take care not to fall into or from the basin. Common sense dictates that such appurtenances should not be used when conditions such as rain or wind preclude their safe use. GLOBAL strongly recommends that optional climbing equipment be purchased to meet the current specifi cations set forth by OSHA or ANSI whether the individual operator is required by law to do so or not. A properly secured safety belt should be used at all times when performing operations work or maintenance on the basin roof and sidewall.

F. Care must be taken to avoid entanglement in equipment installed in or on the basin. Securely Lock out all power, be it electrical or PTO, prior to working on or near such equipment.

G. Field modifi cation of the basin or auxiliary equipment without the authorization of the manufacturer may present unknown dangers to the operator and must be avoided.

CHECK DELIVERYYour basin has been carefully checked before shipment. However, you should check your shipment upon arrival using the Packing List provided to insure it is complete.

Should you discover that a shortage exists or fi nd that some material is damaged you should note on the freight bill that a shortage or damage exists. This should be done before you sign the freight bill since your signature indicates an acceptance of the shipment as it is received. Claims of any shortages must be made within ten (10) days from receipt of the shipment. Parts that are short or damaged are the responsibility of the delivering carrier. If there is damaged or missing equipment it must be reordered immediately so the installation of the equipment is not delayed.

CAUTIONAll galvanized steel is subject to oxidation, sometimes called “white rust” when exposed to moisture from any source. Care should be taken to protect sidewall sheets and roof sheets as much as possible. INSIDE STORAGE IS ADVISABLE. When on the job site, sheets should be placed on edge far enough apart to allow air to circulate freely.

BOLT IDENTIFICATION AND TORQUE VALUES

grade 8.2

Bolt Size Approximate Torque Required

5/16” grade 8.2 27 ft-lbs, 37 Nm, 3.7 kgf-m

3/8” grade 8.2 48 ft-lbs, 65 Nm, 6.6 kgf-m

Have your contractor demonstrate that he/she is giving you the correct torque.

Approximate torque levels for the fasteners that bolt your bin together are listed here. For all these “bearing type” sidewall sheet connections, a “snug tight” condition is suffi cient to ensure structural soundness, where “snug-tight” is defi ned as the tightness attained by several impacts on an impact wrench, or the full effort of a worker with an ordinary spud wrench that brings the connected sheets into fi rm contact. A properly tightened bolt must have its seal washer fully seated in the hole and the sheets fully drawn together to produce a water-tight seal.

WARNING! CRITICAL: The correct bolts as specifi ed and provided by Brownie Systems must be used throughout the entire assembly of this Global Wastewater Treatment System / Basin! And, the correct bolt torques as indicated in the table above must be achieved throughout the entire assembly! Using the wrong bolts or not achieving the correct torque values could result in the structural damage or failure!

3 Concrete / Site Location4A. RESPONSIBILITIES / LIABILITIESGlobal provides practical knowledge, experience, accepted designs and installation standards but variance from project to project dictates local on-site assistance with the construction of the plant. Therefore, GLOBAL recommends that the customer contracts with a qualifi ed professional that can provide on-site counsel during the placement and installation of the plant.

While Global provides general recommendations for foundation requirements, Global assumes no responsibility for results arising from these suggestions. The actual determination of foundation and fl oor thickness and reinforcement, and the other site specifi cations necessary for the installation of the equipment into or onto the ground, is the responsibility of the customers designate such as: the site engineer, the general contractor and/or the end-user/purchaser.

B. General Foundation Recommendations1. The foundation site should be level, well drained and free of vegetation and/or debris.2. Foundation(s) should be on undisturbed soil or engineered backfi ll.3. A soil and foundation (Geotechnical) investigation should be conducted for each site to confi rm the soil bearing capacity.4. Foundation design recommendation is based on an allowable soil bearing capacity of 3500 psf.5. The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3000 psi at 28 days.6. Concrete should be allowed to cure 7 days before beginning erection of the basin and 28 days before fi lling the basins.7. The tops of footings should be as level as possible (+/- 1/8”). High spots or debris should be removed prior to basin erection.8. Anchor bolts need to be located properly, in order to keep the basin round.9. All reinforcing rod for concrete shall conform to ASTM A615, Grade 60.10. Rebar should lap a distance equal to 24 * (Rebar Dia.). For example: #6 rebar has a minimum allowable lap of 18”. #6 rebar has a diameter of 6/8” = 0.75” * 24 = 18” lap.11. Refer to foundation plans for foundation sizes and reinforcement requirements.12. The fl oor of the basin should be a minimum of six (6) inches and should include wire mesh of 6” x 6” or better as required by the Site Engineer. See plan design for fi nal design details.13. Global recommends that a compacted sand base of 4” be placed under the fl oor for cushion.14. The fl oor should have a hard trowel fi nish to provide a smooth, nonporous surface.

C. Foundation LevelGlobal Wastewater Treatment Systems are pre-engineered for gravity fl ow through the plant. The design allows the foundation of the basins to be constructed at the same level/elevation [except at clarifi er cone(s)]. Gravity fl ow is achieved through predetermined internal elevation drops within the system. Refer to construction plans for Plan Profi le Elevation Details. Maintaining critical elevations, as shown in the plans, is essential to proper plant operation.

WARNING! If the basin being constructed is being installed below ground, pre-read the Buried Basin section starting on page 30 before doing any concrete work!

LOCATION OF BASIN SITECheck your site locations for possible problems with the following:

1. Local codes and/or permits 6. Seismic load 2. Power lines 7. High wind or Snow load area 3. Highways 8. Railroads 4. Waterways and run off 9. Other possible soil problems 5. Poor soil conditions

CHOOSING SITE FOR THE BASIN

GLOBAL recommends the assistance of a qualifi ed professional that can provide on-site counsel with the installation and placement of the Wastewater Treatment System. GLOBAL does have practical knowledge, experience, accepted design, and installation standards but the variance from project to project dictates local on-site assistance with the construction plant.

Consideration should be given to convenience in fi lling and emptying and accessibility to existing and planned facilities. The site should be level, on fi rm soil, with adequate drainage. Any fi ll used in leveling the site MUST BE well compacted to prevent uneven settling from weight of foundation, basin and contents. After site is completely level, use 4” of fi ll sand to act as a cushion under the concrete pads.

Standard foundation drawings and specifi cations are furnished by GLOBAL showing soil bearing pressures required. It is the obligation of the purchaser to obtain a soil bearing test and ascertain that the foundation has suffi cient strength for a capacity fi lled basin. Unless the fi nished foundation is level and true, and the site properly graded for water drainage, failure of the footing and foundation could result. This will void the GLOBAL warranty.

At the time your soil is being compacted and the foundation is being poured, make sure that the work is being done in exact accordance with your soil engineer’s specifi cations. Remember - if your soil isn’t right, your foundation could TIP AND CRACK - if your foundation isn’t right, your basin could fail. The foundation drawings on the following pages are intended as a guide only and are not to be interpreted as “fi rm” instruction. If at a later date, the basin is increased in height, the foundation may not be adequate.

The basin is ROUND and to keep it round, the anchor bolts should follow a SCRIBED CIRCLE with the correct chord dimensions between the anchor bolts. Refer to pages 26 - 27 for proper location of drill-in anchor bolts.

4 Concrete / Site Location

Note: GLOBAL recommends a six-inch (6”) minimum thickness for the foundation. The determination of the thickness of the foundation and the other specifi cations necessary for the installation of the equipment into or onto the ground is the responsibility of those other than the manufacturer, such as: the site engineer, the general contractor, and/or the end-user/purchaser. Applications vary with each project.

STORAGE AREA FOR GLOBAL EQUIPMENTNormally the installation of the mechanical equipment such as the pumps, motor/blower units, etc. is performed as one of the last phases of the construction process. The mechanical equipment, paint and paint thinner, mastic sealant, caulking, PVC cement, etc., does represent an expensive investment and therefore arrangements should be made for indoor storage to prevent weathering, theft or unnecessary damage or loss in the interim period. For further instruction, refer to the auxiliary equipment manuals.

PRELIMINARY WORKThe site engineer can provide preliminary work that is crucial to the installation of the equipment and the performance and maintenance of the equipment. Following are concerns that can be addressed by the site engineer:

1. TEMPORARY ELECTRICAL POWER usually is needed during installation. The temporary electrical power should be at the job site by the time the construction crew arrives.

2. EXCAVATION OF THE SOIL should be made just prior to the installation. Moisture or seepage into the excavated area could cause problems. Sloping the walls of the excavated site will prevent damage to the base and prevent potential injuries to personnel in the excavated area.

3. POUR THE CONCRETE FLOOR FOR YOUR BASIN. See the Concrete / Site Location pages in this manual.

WARNING! THE EXCAVATED SOIL SHOULD BE LEFT AN ADEQUATE DISTANCE FROM THE EDGE OF THE EXCAVATION AREA SO WALLS WILL NOT COLLAPSE INTO THE AREA!

2. Construct the foundation(s) (before basin(s) assembly).

3. Build the bottom ring with hold down brackets attached fi rst.

4. Pour the concrete basin fl oor(s).

5a. Scaffolding method - add the additional sidewall rings, working from the bottom up. Add the inverted base angle around the top when fi nal ring is constructed.

5b. Jacking method - Build the top ring, loosely attached to the bottom ring (3 bolts per sheet). Attach the roof or inverted base angle around the perimeter. Add the additional sidewall rings, working from the top down.

6. Upon completion of basin walls, insure all bolts are tight and properly torqued.

7. Add inlets and outlets if they come with this basin.

8. Assemble the cathodic protection, if cathodic protection is required in your installation.

9a. Properly prepare the basin for application of paint / coating / lining as noted in your site specifi c plans. Be sure to use approved recommended etching, solvent. or cleaning products.

9b. Have professionals install the tank’s liner.

10. Construct basin ladders or stairs if they are to be included on the basin.

11. Install the wind ring if the basin has one and add any other auxiliary equipment (e.g. all pipe support brackets, etc.).

12. Apply the coating products supplied to the outside of the basin, and apply the rubber liner to the inside of the basin.

13. Fill the basin and check for leaks, if leaks are present repair as required.

14. Backfi ll around the unit if it is an in-ground unit and pour the concrete curb, if required.

15. Install any interior plumbing devices (e.g. diffuser grid systems).

16. Install all guardrails around basins. Apply Mine Coat to post mounting bracket bolts on interior of the basin.

17. After construction GLOBAL recommends building a fence around the unit. Post all warning signs.

Backfi lling Procedure1. Install the Drain Tile.

2. Start Filling the Tank - Check for leaks and make repairs as needed.

3. Backfi ll in uniform lifts of approximately 1’ (using granular fi ll 3-10 mm) completely around the tank. It is possible to backfi ll as the tank fi lls, but do not backfi ll above the current water level! Also pour the concrete curb after the water is in, when required!

4. Grade backfi ll to provide slope away from the tank. The top 6 to 12 inches of the fi ll may be non-granular soil to support vegetation (if desired).

WARNING! Backfi ll with free-draining, non-cohesive, granular materials. Filling the tank before backfi lling is required in order to check for leaks and provide structural support during the backfi lling process!

MINE COAT™

ApplicationMine Coat™ is a water-based, environmentally safe alternative to conventional hot-applied, solvent based and sheet membrane waterproofing systems. Since Mine Coat™ cures by evaporation, a minimum application temperature of 40ºF (4.5ºC) is required. Apply in thin coats. The product cures within 24-48 hours at 70ºF (21ºC) and 50% relative humidity, at a thickness of 40 mils (1mm).

For best results, surfaces must be dry and free of dirt, debris, oil or grease. Application is not recommended if rain is imminent, or in high humidity environments.

Mine Coat™ is applied between 20-30 ft²/gal (0.3-0.7 m²/litre) to produce a 40-60 mil (1-1.5 mm) protective membrane. Mine Coat™ dries to the touch within minutes at 70ºF (21ºC). Curing time will vary depending on temperature and relative humidity.

LIMITATIONS* Mine Coat™ is mildly alkaline. When applying this product observe appropriate safety precautions, wear gloves, eye protection and other suitable protective equipment. For further information please consult the product MSDS.

Mine Coat™ should not be applied when the ambient temperature is below 40ºF (4.5ºC). The uncured membrane may be damaged if frozen. Some surface base coats, such as coal tar are unsuitable for use with Mine Coat™.

CAUTION For industrial use only. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid storage below 40ºF (4.5ºC). Please consult the MSDS before using Mine Coat™.
