The challenge we face
Source: 2019 Global Status Report, International Energy Agency for the Global Alliance for Building and Construction
By 2050, global population will increase
27% to 9.8bn and global floor area
will increase by 100%
• Buildings are responsible for
39% of global carbon
emissions
• Energy demand will increase
by 50% by 2050
Climate action Resource efficiency Health and wellbeing
• 91% of people live where air
pollution levels exceed World Health Organization limits
• People are 40% more likely to
have asthma due to living in a home with damp or mould
104 of 194 countries that signed the Paris
Agreement have committed to improve building energy efficiency to meet mitigation targets.
Only 62 countries currently have building energy codes.
• Buildings are responsible for
50% of global material use
• 42.4bn tonnes of
materials consumed annually
Resource efficiency Health and wellbeing
Our sector is crucial to delivering global goals
By 2050, new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have net zero embodied carbon, and all buildings, including existing buildings, must be net zero operational carbon.
By 2030, new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have at least 40% less embodied carbon with significant upfront carbon reduction, and all new buildings must be net zero operational carbon.

Bringing embodied carbon upfrontCoordinated action for the building and construction sector to tackle embodied carbon
A global campaign to accelerate a sustainable built environment by proving and supporting benefits for people, particularly related to health and wellbeing
Project targets
• Reduce contribution from built environment to global health crises, such as air pollution
• Increase awareness and education on sustainable, healthy buildings
• Empower advocacy around sustainability with health co-benefits
• Prove business case for green buildings

Why we need a step change in
the way we design,
construct and operate
2. Deliver more for less, reduce
CAPEX
3 Maintain and operate for less, reduce cost of
failure
1. Invest Successfully in Assets &
Infrastructure
4. Transform & Disrupt existing
models
Improve user experience, engage local
business services, safe and healthy,
convenient and efficient living

Driving more finance towards sustainable construction projects
Ursula Hartenberger, RICS
What makes a construction project eligible for “green”
finance?
Example of defining “green” – EU Taxonomy for Sustainable FinanceWhat is the Taxonomy?A list of economic activities with performance criteria for their contribution to six environmental objectives.
• Increases investor confidence by providing an answer to the question that: What is a sustainable building?
• Encourages the directing of investment flows towards low carbon construction projects and high-performing real estate assets and the development of dedicated financial products and instruments, i.e. green mortgages
• Includes safeguards for 6 environmental objectives (climate mitigation, climate adaptation, water, circular economy, pollution, ecosystems)
• Covers virtually all building types and types of renovations • Strong focus on renovation of existing stock• Represents a dynamic trajectory with tightening of thresholds to ensure a zero-
carbon stock by 2050• Offers an international investment dimension

Categories explore the business creating the smart communities of the future, how we use technology and digitalisation to enable more sustainable construction practices, as well as honouring team collaboration, partnerships, and individual leadership.
Inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, The Big 5 Impact Awards is a platform to celebrate the achievements and transformation of the construction industry that go beyond traditional measures of project delivery.
Working with an international panel of judges, including recognised industry experts, entries will be judged against individual category criteria and the award’s guiding principles of environmental, social and economic sustainable development.Showcase the achievements of your organisation and its people in a newlight, one that aligns your business with an internationalagenda for positive change, innovation and growth.
