SeniorNews LineOne benefit of studies is that researchers can go back later to the data and look at it in a different way. In one recent case, the Wilmer Eye Institute arm of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine reviewed a study done in the 1990s and put together new information.Scientists took a study about the correlation between Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and diet, and considered how Omega-3 in fish and shellfish might play a part.Omega-3, a certain kind of fatty acid, wasn’t associated with health back when the original study was done. Now, knowing that Omega-3 is helpful in a number of ways in the body, they turned their sights to how that oil works in the retina of the eye.More than 2,000 seniors between the ages of 65 and 84 participated in a survey about what they ate for one year. The new analysis of that data asked whether those who routinely ate fish and shellfish were offered any protection from the onset of AMD. Answer: Yes, they were. Those who had advanced cases of AMD

were much less likely to eat seafood with Omega-3.At the same time, researchers asked whether participants were protected from AMD by the zinc in crabs and oysters. The answer: No, they weren’t.However, we shouldn’t jump the gun. The researchers were quoted as saying that this is a “potential” way to avoid AMD. After all, it was a small study, and the participants self-reported what they ate. They’re calling this a good first step and saying that a randomized study should be done.If you’re concerned about your eyes, ask your doctor if you could benefit from eating fish or shellfish once a week.

by people who are slipshod, who try to hide mistakes, and who are in some way taking advantage of the system, the people down the ranks see it and act accordingly.• Other departments: If there is spillover from one department to the next in terms of duties or chain of command, there can be problems if the first department isn’t doing what it’s supposed to — like dominos falling. • Regional differences in staff: I hate to say it, but I think this one is a biggie. There really does seem to be a difference in how veterans are treated across the country, not only in terms of accuracy and diligence in handling their medical affairs, but in plain everyday politeness. It’s as though some areas of the country forget that it’s the veterans they’re to serve, not the other way around. It’s too bad that VA employees can’t be shuffled around by the hundreds to see how other facilities operate. After all, excellence breeds excellence, right?

Differences in careWhat’s amazed me from Day One are the big differences in levels of care from one part of the country to another. I’ve got veterans writing (or telling me in person) that their medical care is outstanding, that appointments made in advance are kept, that they get a heads-up call to make sure they’ve remembered the appointment, and that they’re extremely satisfied with the care they’re getting from the Department of Veterans Affairs on all levels. On the flip side of the coin are veterans who write me describing a nightmare list of problems in getting the care they need. The list of possible reasons for the variations is long. Here are a few that come to mind:• Problems at the top: When departments are run

HIBERNATION (continued):inches (.5 m) deep. It rolls up into a ball and covers itself with its tail in the chamber lined with leaves, grass, lichen and animal hair. It is the only mammal known to survive a drop in body temperature during hibernation of 28 to 27º F (-2 to -3º C). People can’t survive a body temperature lower than 90º F (32º C). This squirrel wakes up briefly every few weeks during its long hibernation, which may last seven months.k The type and length of hibernation depends on the animal’s body and its habitat or home. Since the Arctic ground squirrel is small and lives in cold areas, its hibernation is long. Similarly, mouse lemurs hibernate up to seven months. Garter snakes in the Arctic tundra may hibernate eight months. The longest hibernators known are Turkish hamsters in the Middle East, which can hibernate as long as ten months! k Those long-hibernating garter snakes may get together with thousands of friends for group hibernating. Groups of up to 12 skunks sleep together, and brown bats hang in clusters in their caves in groups of over 100.k To prepare for hibernation and the approach of winter, animals eat a lot. They need lots of body fat for the long sleep. Baby toads and bats actually eat enough to double their weight. Not all bats hibernate. By the way, did you know that bats are the only flying mammals? (Flying squirrels and flying lemurs move through the air but they are only gliding.)k Black bears may gain as much as 30 pounds (13.5 kg) per week when they are preparing to hibernate or “den.” So, just like when you eat too much at a holiday meal, the extra fat makes animals less energetic and ready for their long winter’s nap.k Non-breeding polar bear females and males don’t

nuts and other seeds in their burrows. Scientists have found up to two gallons (8 l) of seeds and nuts in the burrows of chipmunks. That’s a lot of food for such tiny animals.k On humans, body fat is not necessarily desirable, although we need some for reserve energy. For animals, it is extremely important. There are two types of body fat — white and brown fat. k White fat is what animals live off of while hibernating. White fat burns slowly and lasts for a long time. Brown fat is found near the vital organs, heart and lungs and is needed for survival. This fat is like rocket fuel and is used for quick bursts of energy. k One small animal that is really a nuisance to farmers and even suburban neighborhoods is the

Tax-PreP sofTwareEven if you’ve always done your taxes with pencil, paper and a calculator, there are benefits to using a tax-preparation software program. The biggest one is accuracy. The neater and more accurate your tax return is, the less reason the Internal Revenue Service will have to study your return more closely. Some of the more well-known programs are TaxCut, TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxACT.Before you buy, read the box carefully. Will the program run on your computer? Will the included forms cover your tax situation? For example, if you have a small part-time business with Schedule C expenses and income, a basic program likely won’t include the right forms.Generally, all tax-software programs are the same.• The program will start by asking a lot of questions. Once you enter the personal data, such as your name, address and Social Security number, you won’t have to do it again. The reason for many of the questions is that the program will decide what forms you need. Have patience with the ones that don’t apply to you.• The program holds your information from one year to the next, and many entries will be automatically transferred over to the new forms.• The program will fill in numbers automatically from one form to the next, lessening your chances of transposing digits or leaving something out.• At the end, the program will do a review and show you where you might have left out information, places where you fall outside the expected average response, and most importantly which places on your form are likely to be flagged by the IRS.• You can install your state’s program, and the numbers will transfer to it from the Federal portion of the software. Before you begin entering numbers in the tax program, check the math on your W-2 Form or any Form 1099 you received from self-employment work. If it’s wrong, notify the company and have a corrected form sent to you and the IRS. While working in the software program, don’t override any numbers. Instead, if they don’t look right, backtrack and investigate numbers you’ve typed in and see where the discrepancy started. If you made more than $600 in miscellaneous or self-employed work, you should have a Form 1099 for that. Remember that a copy of each one goes to the IRS, so don’t leave any out.

hibernate or den. Pregnant polar bears hibernate in dens built in snow banks while preparing for their cubs to arrive. The cubs weigh about a pound (.45 kg) when born and 20–30 pounds (9–14 kg) when they come out of the dens in March or April. Polar bears are found in Arctic areas of Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Norway. k Are you wondering about these sleepers’ bathroom issues? When they burn fat, it produces water. This water stays in the bodies of true hibernators for hydration, eliminating the need to urinate. Animals that get up to eat occasionally, such as squirrels, do urinate. k Instead of storing large amounts of body fat, eastern chipmunks and Columbian ground squirrels (and other small mammals) store large amounts of

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the best way to get my 6-month-old dog, “Kit,” to quit nuisance barking, and does Bark Off really work? — Phillip M., via emailDEAR PHILLIP: The best way to address nuisance barking is through daily, attentive training methods. Whether you spring for an ultrasonic “anti-barking” device or something else, the key to reducing or stopping Kit’s barking is spending time with him, teaching him not to bark incessantly. The most common training method to stop unwanted barking is to distract the dog with a noise, a hiss or a sharp “no!” Or, in the case of the device mentioned, an “ultrasonic” noise that does the same thing. No matter how much money you spend or don’t spend, that’s really the key technique. But there’s more to it. When I say “distract,” that doesn’t mean just hissing, shaking a can of pennies or pressing an ultrasonic control button from your cozy spot on the couch. I mean, distract immediately, then get up and go to

Kit and have him sit and stay for a minute. When he does that, give him lots of praise. Then — and this may sound revolutionary — spend more time with him, training or playing. Just pressing a button and ignoring your dog won’t solve the problem. The button you should press when Kit’s barking is the pause button on your DVR.Kit, at 6 months, is going through a bit of a change, heading into puppy puberty. He’s energetic and pushing the envelope. So be firm and consistent with his obedience training, play with him to work off that energy, and set a daily schedule for him — feeding, walks, training, play, sleep — and stick to it. It will take a few weeks to reduce his barking this way, but it’s worth it.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 25. I have a serious case of GERD. I’ve been put on four different medicines. They aren’t working.I also have palpitations throughout the day. I’ve been told by doctors and nurses that there is nothing dangerous about them. I’d like to know if this true. — J.C.ANSWER: GERD — gastroesophageal reflux disorder — is heartburn. It’s the upward spurting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the swallowing tube, a place that is not able to cope with these corrosive juices the way the stomach is. Eliminate or go easy on foods that make GERD worse: citrus fruits; tomatoes; onions; carbonated drinks; spicy, fatty or fried foods; chocolate; peppermint; and caffeine. If you’re overweight, weight loss lessens GERD symptoms. Don’t lie down after eating. Don’t smoke. Sleep with your head, chest and stomach on a slope by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. That position keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Don’t wear anything that constricts your stomach, like tight pants or tight belts.

Medicines called “proton pump inhibitors” nearly completely turn off acid production. Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant are their names. If you still have heartburn while on these medicines, it’s OK to use an antacid along with them.If medicines fail, other causes of heartburn need consideration, things like bile reflux or eosinophilic esophagitis. If these conditions aren’t found, then surgical treatment of GERD is an option that’s open to you. Palpitations mean a thumping or racing heart. They can be felt as a thud in the chest. The cause is an extra beat — or more correctly, a premature beat — one that comes before it should. The beat after a premature beat is delayed. During the delay, the heart fills with more blood than usual, and that causes a thump in the chest when the heart empties. Premature beats are almost always innocent and need no treatment. You can believe your doctors and nurses. The booklet on GERD explains this common malady and its treatment. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue — No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

HIBERNATION (continued):woodchuck. You’ve probably heard the tongue twister: “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” The answer is: “A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.” Actually a woodchuck, also known as a groundhog, whistle pig or marmot, is the largest member of the squirrel family. It eats seeds, leaves, grass, flowers, fruit, eggs, insects and, yes, some wood. k Punxsutawney Phil is probably the most famous hibernator in the world. This little guy (groundhog) has been a “weather predictor” for over 120 years. February 2nd is Groundhog Day (the day Phil awakens), and Phil seeing (or not seeing) his shadow on that day “determines” the time Ole’ Man Winter will linger. The town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has tied itself closely to the groundhog. Phil has his own website, fan club and appears on lots of news and weather programs every February. k While the snow and cold of winter are all around us, isn’t it interesting to think of all the animals that are sleeping it away?

Earnhardt Jr. Still a Winner With FansAt the moment, there is no direct correlation between popularity and performance at NASCAR’s level.Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won a

fan vote to become the Sprint Cup Series’ Most Popular Driver for the eighth year in a row, finished a mere 21st in the point standings. The season wasn’t without its high points: Earnhardt had a pole, three top-five finishes and eight top 10s. He failed, however, to make the Chase for the second time in as many years and a fourth time in the past six.The third-generation driver — father Dale won seven championships and grandfather Ralph was a legendary short-track champion — has won just one Cup race in the last four seasons.“My fan base has stayed strong,” said Earnhardt Jr. “ It’s become an important honor each year for me, and I’m glad that fans still feel their support for me. I appreciate their dedication and loyalty.”Believe it or not, Earnhardt isn’t the all-time leader in Most Popular Driver awards. Bill Elliott, still active at age 55, won the award 10 years in a row and 16 times overall before “withdrawing from consideration” after claiming the award for the 16th

time in 2002.The latest attempt to get Earnhardt back “up to speed” is a change of crew chiefs. Three of the four drivers at Hendrick Motorsports will be matched with different crew chiefs. Steve Letarte, formerly with Jeff Gordon, will now direct Earnhardt’s efforts. Lance McGrew moves to Mark Martin’s team, and Alan Gustafson will now work with Gordon. For obvious reasons, the pairing of five-time

champion Jimmie Johnson with Chad Knaus will remain intact.Earnhardt’s star has dimmed since he finished third in the 2003 standings and won a career-best six races the following year. He hasn’t won more than a single race in any season since. His career victory total, 18, ranks him in a tie for 38th place all-time.Since moving from what was

then Dale Earnhardt Inc. to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, Earnhardt has won only once, at Michigan International Speedway on June 15, 2008. His winless streak is now 93 races.

why sTainless-sTeel sink loses iTs shine

QUESTION: I was in the stainless-steel business for many years and thought I would comment on your recent column regarding cleaning a stained sink. Stainless steel is indeed an alloy of iron, chromium and nickel. (Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, not copper and bronze. Bronze is itself an alloy of copper and tin.) The oxidation layer of chromium is what protects the metal from staining. However, when it is scratched or worn away by abrasion, a new layer is instantaneously formed because chromium reacts immediately with the oxygen in the atmosphere. The layer is always present. It is clear, extremely hard and more or less impervious. Otherwise, the iron would oxidize, forming rust.

Any popular kitchen cleanser will remove stains. However, to return to the factory polish finish is generally impossible because the sheets used to form sinks are polished at the mill with high-speed heavy machinery. It would be nearly impossible to duplicate this finish by hand. — Joe F., via e-mail

ANSWER: Great information, Joe, and thanks for the clarification! Stainless-steel sinks are quite durable, and most stains or spots are made by other objects — for example, leaving a piece of damp steel wool in the sink overnight will inevitably reveal a rust spot the next day. However, a wipe and a rinse generally removes the spot.

As Joe noted, stainless-steel sinks do lose their gleaming shine over time, particularly if you use abrasives. You can keep the finish looking uniform by rinsing and wiping down the sink each night with a nonabrasive cloth or sponge, then drying with a towel so that water spots don’t form. If you want to add a bit more shine to the sink, try using a commercial stainless-steel-sink polish occasionally, following the directions on the package carefully.

HOME TIP: Never use a steel-wool pad to clean a stainless-steel sink. Steel-wool pads have a tendency to break apart, and tiny particles of steel can become embedded in sink’s surface. The steel particles will rust, making it appear that the sink itself is rusting.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

TEBOW: FALSE PROPHET OR MILE-HIGH MESSIAH?

And so it was that on the first Sunday after Christmas, a star appeared to the faithful in Denver. He had been heralded for seemingly ages — blessed with a strong arm, fleet of foot and possessing a strong faith in God. This man is named Tim Tebow, but he has been called “Tim Tremendous,” “the Mile-High Messiah” and “Touchdown Jesus” — a nickname the seriously evangelical Tebow must surely frown upon. The Broncos have always inspired a certain kind of religious fervor among their followers. But it has been a long while since they have been to the Promised Land, and despite a few promising starts from quarterback Kyle Orton, the Broncos lost their way in 2010. With the exception of an epic beat down of their division-rival Chiefs, the Broncos have seemingly played without soul or conviction (at least not the good kind). And despite relatively good numbers, it was Orton banished to the sidelines and Tebow moved out of clipboard purgatory on Dec. 19. And despite a 39-23 road loss to the Raiders of Oakland, many fans saw a

revelation on the field. In that contest, Tebow hit on eight of his 16 passes, good for 138 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown pass. He also broke off a 40-yard touchdown run — the longest touchdown run for a quarterback in Broncos history and the longest touchdown in NFL history for a quarterback in his first start. But wait, Tebow became just the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for a touchdown of 30 or more yards and run for a touchdown of 40 or more yards in the same game. When you consider that this is the house that John Elway built, the numbers become even more staggering. Then came his first win — a commanding performance in Denver where he rallied the Broncos from a 17-0 deficit at halftime, finishing with 308 passing yards, one touchdown pass and a fourth quarter rushing touchdown, which capped the comeback. It was only two games, but fans saw enough in his arm and poise to get plenty excited about. His record-setting college career (including his mind-bending, Heisman Award-winning sophomore campaign) had already given him a faithful flock — his jersey is the best selling in the NFL and the most ever for a rookie — and they believe there is more to come. Tebow, though enthusiastic, displayed his Christian humility.“In the NFL, everything you do is an interview, and it is an audition,” he said after the game. “You always have to put your best foot forward.…I will try to do nothing less, personally.”The Denver faithful want to be made believers.

elavskyQ: I love the FX show “Justified,” especially its star, Timothy Olyphant. I saw that he guest-starred on a few episodes of “The Office,” which he was great in, but it got me nervous that maybe “Justified” had been canceled. Has it? — Gennifer G., via e-mailA: Don’t you worry — you’re in for another season of gun slinging when “Justified” returns for its sophomore season on Wednesday, Feb. 9, on FX. Not only will Timothy return as U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens, we’ll also see some new faces. New cast members include Margo Martindale (“Mercy”), Jeremy Davies (“Lost”), Joseph Lyle Taylor (“100 Centre Street”) and Brad William Henke (“October Road”). They will all play members of the Bennett family, the biggest pot farmers in eastern Kentucky.

i i iQ: When will my favorite show, “Being Erica,” be back on SoapNet? It seems like it’s been forever! — Nicole S., Sacramento, Calif.A: Erin Karpluk and cast will be back for another season of time-traveling psychotherapy on Jan. 26 on SOAPnet at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Erica has graduated to group therapy, which means the introduction of some new cast members (as well as a few visits from some familiar faces). When I spoke with Erin recently, I asked her what viewers can expect in the highly anticipated third season.“It’s the same show, but it seems like we just went deeper into everything, into all of Erica’s different relationships and with her therapy, she said. “This season is about transformations. New characters are introduced. There’s a character, Adam, that’s introduced. I won’t say anything too much about what their relationship is, because Erica and Adam ended up with a very strong connection to each

other. A new doctor is introduced, Dr. Arthur. “Kai returns; Cassidy returns; Erica’s sister, Sam, gets a boyfriend, Lenin. Barb goes through some serious life changes. Erica is mourning the loss of her relationship with Ethan in a very realistic way. And there’s also Erica’s budding business with Julianne. They’re trying to get 50/50 Press up and running, and that will bring a lot of comedy to the show.”

i i iQ: Has “Medium” been canceled? — Frankie T., via e-mailA: The struggling drama starring Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber has indeed been canceled for the second time. The first time was in 2009, when NBC dropped the show from its schedule and CBS picked it up. But CBS recently announced that it had reduced season seven’s episodes from 22 to 13, with the series finale airing on Friday, Jan. 21.

i i iQ: I love the Syfy series “Haven.” Will it be coming back? — Mary D. in Oklahoma

A: Syfy has renewed the supernatural drama series (based on Stephen King’s “The Colorado Kid”) for a second season. The new season begins production in the spring and should start airing this summer (although a solid release date has not been issued).

Some of the most famous speeches have been written into history and quoted, memorized and immortalized.

s Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for many things but mostly for his “I Have a Dream” speech. Even if you don’t know anything else about the man, you have probably heard the words he spoke on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. The speech was delivered as part of the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.” s Dr. King’s speech was powerful and eloquent. One of the most memorable lines was “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” His desire for racial equality for all Americans was a powerful force in the Civil Rights Movement. The ending words of the speech were that all “will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’”s Almost 100 years before Dr. King’s speech, President Abraham Lincoln delivered another speech that is often quoted. On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered the “Gettysburg Address” amidst the Civil War that was raging in the United States. The words, “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” are memorized by school children to this day.s If you have ever visited Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the U.S.S. Arizona Monument, you should be acutely aware of the sacrifice of U.S. troops on December 7, 1941. After the attack by Japanese forces, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a

“Declaration of War” to Congress on December 8. With this speech the United States entered World War II, and it been called the “Day of Infamy” speech. The first words after addressing Congress were: “December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of

the Empire of Japan.” s Many years later, on June 12, 1987, another politician, President Ronald Reagan, was speaking at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin when Germany was on the cusp of a huge change. The Berlin Wall was a physical

barrier between East and West Berlin for 28 years. President Reagan’s words: “Come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev — Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”s While many famous speeches in history have been delivered by political figures, there are also many that are

non-political. One of the best in recent years was from computer science professor Randy

Pausch who gave his “last lecture” to an audience at Carnegie Mellon University on September 18, 2007. His speech on “Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” was inspirational and has been heard (or read) by many more than the 400 in attendance. Dr. Pausch lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on July 25, 2008, but his legacy lives on through his book, “The Last Lecture,” published before his death. He reminded us to live life to the fullest, because, “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think.”
