SeniorNews LineAs we age, many of us find that our walking speed gets slower. Most of us assume that it’s a function of age and that it’s inevitable. It’s not. Researchers compared natural walking speed and life expectancy and came to some startling conclusions. They combined the results of nine different studies and followed 34,000 participants for up to 21 years. Each participant was age 65 or older with an average age of 73 years. Their natural walking speed, from a standing start, was measured and timed for short distances. The result of the studies: Those who naturally have an above-average walking speed will generally also have a longer-than-average life expectancy. Researchers were able to correlate current age with walking speed and predict the likely survival ages. For those participants age 75 and older, the information was especially on target.Additionally, researchers realized that the information was valuable enough to be used as a standard assessment, such as blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and general mobility tests.

That’s not to say you should intentionally start walking faster. Your body picks its own natural speed. However, it wouldn’t hurt to have your doctor do a test so see how fast you normally walk. It can be done easily in a hallway of the doctor’s office by a nurse or practitioner. If you walk slower than average, your doctor could look for the reasons why, as walking speed is an indication of the overall state of your health. If a problem is identified and then remedied, your normal walking speed may increase — which will put you in a category of those who have a longer life expectancy and better body functioning.Wear your sneakers to the doctor’s office!

Winter GoldLet’s face it — birds love peanuts. Shelled or unshelled (unsalted), any bird will fly to any

feeder to grab one. Peanuts are a wonderful food to feed birds because they are high in fat and rich in protein — two things birds need to

get through the cold winter months.

A WreAth for every Arlington grAve

Sometimes you have to plan far ahead for a worthy cause. One such cause is this: Wreaths Across America has been given permission to put wreaths at all 330,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery during December 2011. And it’s going to take some advance planning. As I’ve written before, Worcester Wreath in Harrington, Maine, has put thousands of wreaths on graves at Arlington over the years — 19 years, in fact. The effort has grown exponentially across the country and now includes dozens more national cemeteries. This year will be its 20th year, and all the graves at Arlington will receive a wreath. Behind this effort is Executive Director Karen Worcester of Worcester Wreath. A more compassionate woman you could

FEBRUARY BABIES (continued):daughter Reagan because in his words, “Ronald Reagan was the greatest president ever.”D Speaking of Ronald Reagan, can you name this February baby’s first screen role? It was the 1937 film “Love Is on the Air.” Reagan had actually started his career “on the air” when the University of Iowa hired him in 1932 to broadcast the Hawkeyes’ football games at the rate of $10 per game. Reagan appeared in over 50 movies, but his most famous is probably 1940’s “Knute Rockne, All American.” He entered active military duty during World War II in 1942, but because of his nearsightedness was prohibited from going overseas. He became California’s 33rd governor in 1967 and held the office for two terms. Although Reagan ranks high in popularity as a U.S. President, he was actually defeated for the nomination in both 1968 and 1976, before finally winning in 1980. His administration is remembered for the end of the Cold War. When Reagan died in 2004 at the age of 93, he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for over ten years.D Although we think of Gloria Vanderbilt as a jeans designer, she was first a painter, studying at the Art Students League of New York, and known for her oil paintings, watercolors and pastels. She also did artwork for Hallmark cards. She was born an heiress of the famous Vanderbilt railroad family, and, at the age of 15 months, inherited a half-share in a $5 million trust fund when her father succumbed to cirrhosis. It wasn’t until she was nearing 50 years old that she stepped into the fashion world, starting with a line of scarves. By the mid-1970s, her famous swan logo could be seen on clothing, perfume, leather goods and liqueurs. Vanderbilt is the mother of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper, who is the great-great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt.

and many others. In her free time, Brinkley is an avid fan of the New York Islanders hockey team.D We’ve been listening to Don Pardo introduce “Saturday Night Live’s” “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” since the program premiered in 1975. Baby boomers may remember Pardo as the announcer on the original “Jeopardy!” game show with host Art Fleming from 1964 to 1975. Pardo, who turns 93 on February 22, officially retired from NBC in 2004 and now pre-records his Saturday Night Live introductions from a studio in his Arizona home.D Two Hungarian sisters, both born in February, achieved movie stardom in America. Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor were born the same week two years apart, Zsa Zsa in 1917 and Eva in 1919. Eva was the first

loW-Cost hobbiesIf you’re looking for a new hobby that doesn’t cost a lot, yet also might become a bit lucrative, consider these:Stamps: Most people collect stamps for their beauty, for the educational factor of learning about other countries and to have an activity to share with their children. But behind those reasons also is the flickering hope that a very valuable stamp will be found, perhaps attached to an envelope in an attic or on a postcard in a flea market. There are numerous ways to start, the easiest being with mail you receive. However, gone are the days of receiving many handwritten letters with interesting stamps on them. Instead, join companies that send you samples — you pay for only the ones you keep. Join an international postcard or pen pal club. Go to stamp shows or join a local club. Decide if there’s an area you’d like to concentrate on, perhaps U.S. Airmail, or commemorative stamps from the 1940s, or Pacific Island stamps. Thumb through stamp catalogs to see what catches your eye — and let the hunt begin.Coins: Try not to spend more than the face value of the coin, especially while you’re beginning your collection. That way, if necessary, your coins can be spent. As with stamps, look through catalogs and see what types of coins most appeal to you.Books: Begin with your favorite author and aim to collect all of them. Explore reissues of authors who have passed away. Obviously they won’t be writing more books. Sometimes there are no reissues, and the only available copies are what’s already out there. Hunt at flea markets, yard sales and on the Internet for copies to fill in your collection. Books, especially if you’re going to end up trading or selling them, can be tricky. Study book grading so you don’t overspend. The key when starting a new hobby or collection is to not break the budget. Put a monthly limit on just how much you’re willing to spend to add to your collection, and don’t go over that amount.Assume that you won’t make huge profits from your collection if you sell. The best benefit might be in the enjoyment of the hunt.

Cooper himself was a model for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren from age 10 to 13. D If Christie Brinkley hadn’t moved to Paris to study art in 1973, she may never have been the cover girl on three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue editions and more than 500 other magazine covers. As she stood in a Paris post office she was “discovered” by an American photographer, Errol Sawyer, who took Brinkley’s first modeling pictures. Speaking of her discovery, Brinkley has said, “I was basically a surfer girl from California. I never looked like a model.” You’ve seen her photo on the cover of Vogue, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and Esquire, among others, as well Life magazine’s best-selling issue ever. She’s been the spokesperson for Chanel, Max Factor, Nissan, Revlon, Halston, Anheuser-Busch

February is Responsible Pet Owners’ Month. It’s an interesting designation, really, as I’m not entirely clear as to whether we’re supposed to be celebrating Responsible Pet Owners, or making pet owners feel guilty about not being as responsible as they should be.On one hand, I’m getting plenty of notices to remind my readers to take their pets in for check-ups (if they haven’t done so already), get their vaccinations up to date and basically work harder at keeping pets healthy and happy. On the other hand, I’m getting plenty of press releases about scads (that’s right, scads) of products that apparently are absolute must-haves in order to be a truly responsible pet owner. To me, it’s all a bit weird. Isn’t responsible pet ownership a year-round activity? Has it suddenly become OK to just condense our responsibility to our pets into the shortest month of the year? Is responsible pet ownership really being promoted, or is this just another way for marketers to convince pet owners that they have to have the latest,

most expensive tooth-brushing devices to keep their dogs’ teeth from just falling out?Not that there aren’t good products being touted. Safety harnesses to keep your pet in place while traveling in the car — good idea. Better, safer chew toys for dogs — another good idea. What I’m getting at is this: Designating a month for responsible pet ownership is a well-intentioned move, but truly responsible pet owners consider it a year-round occupation. Why not celebrate responsible pet owners for who they truly are — compassionate people who see their pets as part of the family and make sure they get the care and love they deserve, all the time?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Your article on arthritis was very interesting, but you did not explain about the arthritis that comes with psoriasis. I have it, and I know of two other people who have it. We don’t understand it at all. Please explain. — B.E.ANSWER: Autoimmunity is the explanation for many illnesses, including both skin and joint psoriasis. “Autoimmunity” indicates that the immune system — our protection against germ invasion and other harmful attacks — for reasons not yet understood, turns against our own bodies; in this case, it’s the skin and joints. The immune system targets joints in as many as 7 percent of those who suffer from skin psoriasis. That’s a considerable number of people when you consider that as many as 3 percent of the entire population suffers from skin psoriasis.Skin psoriasis precedes joint psoriasis most of the time, but there are instances when both occur simultaneously or when joint involvement appears before any skin manifestations. The fact that skin and joint psoriasis run in some families also points to a gene influence on these

conditions.Any joint can be affected. The topmost finger joint, the one below the fingernail, is frequently targeted. Back, neck, knees, you name it — psoriasis can strike it. Like all arthritic joints, psoriatic arthritic joints are swollen, red, tender and stiff. The severity of joint involvement doesn’t always mirror skin involvement, but it does correspond to nail changes. Nails have small pits, become loosened from their attachment to underlying skin, often turn yellow and crumble.Treatment of psoriatic arthritis depends on how bad the arthritis is. For mild to moderate cases, NSAIDS do a good job. They include the familiar Aleve, Advil, Motrin and many others. For more severe involvement, doctors prescribe drugs like methotrexate. And for severe arthritis, a breakthrough has come with the introduction of drugs like Enbrel, Remicade and Humira. The arthritis booklet deals with some of the more common forms of arthritis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. FEBRUARY BABIES (continued):sister to come to the United States, along with her husband, Dr. Eric Drimmer, a Swedish physician who later was doctor to film legend Greta Garbo. Although Eva appeared in nearly 30 movies, she’s best known for her portrayal of Lisa Douglas, the ditzy blond wife on the six seasons of the 1960s sitcom “Green Acres.” Zsa Zsa was Miss Hungary, 1936 and emigrated to the States five years later, where she had 40 film roles and scores of television appearances over the years. Neither sister was a stranger to marriage — Zsa Zsa had nine husbands, while Eva was married five times. D Nearly everyone has seen the stunning black-and-white photographs of Yosemite National Park snapped by Ansel Adams. Adams very nearly didn’t become that famous photographer, since his ambition as a child and young adult was to become a concert pianist. With a photographic memory, reading music and playing the piano came easily to the young Adams. At age 14, a family vacation to Yosemite led to the direction of his future. A gift from his father for the trip, a Kodak Brownie captured Adams’ first photos of the Park. By age 20, his Yosemite prints had been published. He went on to shoot pictures of every American National Park.

s On Feb. 16, 1878, the Bland-Allison Act — which provided for a return to the minting of silver coins — becomes the law of the land. During the 19th century, money was backed by actual deposits of silver and gold, unlike today when the value of American money is essentially secured by faith in the stability of the government.s On Feb. 15, 1903, candy-store owner Morris Michtom places two stuffed bears in his shop window in Brooklyn, N.Y., advertising them as Teddy bears, after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. Other

toy manufacturers soon began turning out copies of Michtom’s stuffed bears, which would become a national childhood institution.s On Feb. 14, 1929, in Chicago, gunmen in the suspected employment of organized crime boss Al Capone murder seven members of George “Bugs” Moran’s North Siders gang. The so-called St. Valentine’s Day Massacre motivated federal authorities to redouble their efforts to find evidence incriminating enough to take Capone off the streets.s On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, authorizing the removal of all people from military areas. The military in turn defined the entire West Coast as a military area, and more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were relocated to remote internment camps around the country.s On Feb. 18, 1959, Ray Charles records “What’d I

Say,” which went on to become one of the greatest rhythm-and-blues records ever made. The call-and-response song was created to fill time at the end of a concert, and the crowd loved it.s On Feb. 20, 1974, Reg Murphy, an editor of The Atlanta Constitution, is kidnapped after being lured from his home by William Williams. Murphy was released after a $700,000 ransom was paid. Within hours, Williams and his wife, Betty, were captured.s On Feb. 17, 1986, Anne Tyler wins the National Book Critics Circle Award for her novel “The Accidental Tourist” (1985). The book, about the life of a travel-book writer after the death of his son and his subsequent divorce, became a bestseller and was later made into a movie starring William Hurt.

❤ Just a little larger than the size of your fist, your heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces (200 to 425 g). The average heart beats about 72 times per minute, which is about 100,000 times a day. You do the math — That’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime.❤ Every day your heart pumps 2,000 gallons (7,570 l) of blood through your body’s 60,000 miles (96,560 km) of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during your lifetime. That’s about 1.5 million gallons (5,678,118 l), which would fill about 200 tanker cars on a train. ❤ About four weeks after conception, a fetus’ heart starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twice as fast as an adult’s. At 12 weeks, its heart is pumping 60 pints (28 l) of blood every day. ❤ The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria, and the lower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates from the left ventricle, the largest and strongest chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about 0.50 inch (1.27 cm) thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only one body part, the cornea, receives no blood.❤ The word “cardiac” means “related to the heart,”

and has its origins in the Greek word for heart, kardia. ❤ There’s a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces (62 grams) heavier, but beats about eight fewer times per minute. ❤ When you have a good belly laugh, up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your

entire body. This can contribute to stress reduction, so laugh it up!

❤ The world’s first successful human heart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The recipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Today, heart

recipients live an average of 15 years. About 3,500 transplants are performed every year. After two

years, about 80 percent of recipients are alive, and after five years, 73 percent of males

and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that same-gender transplants have better results. ❤ The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009, when ironically, it was cancer that claimed his life. Kelly Perkins received her new heart in 1995 and has since climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn, Mt. Whitney and Argentina’s Cajon de Arenales.

❤ HAVE A HEART! ❤We all know that hearts are synonymous with valentine’s Day.

Better Times Ahead at Petty MotorsportsPetty Enterprises won 10 championships in what is now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, a total matched only by modern dynamo

Hendrick Motorsports. But all 10 of the Petty Enterprises titles came with men named Petty behind the wheel. Richard Petty won seven championships, while his father, Lee, won three. Richard Petty’s last championship occurred in 1979.The team currently known as Richard Petty Motorsports is descended from Petty Enterprises but is no longer wholly owned by the family. The current team, recently reconfigured once again in terms of ownership, has roots in Petty Enterprises (268 Cup victories), Robert Yates Racing (57) and Gillett Evernham Motorsports (15).Kasey Kahne won twice in 2009 while employed at the team, but he has moved on to Team Red Bull this year and is headed for Hendrick Motorsports in 2012. A year ago, Richard Petty Motorsports entered four Fords in each Cup race: Kahne, A.J. Allmendinger, Paul Menard and Elliott Sadler. Menard has since moved to Richard Childress Racing, and Sadler is scheduled to compete in the Camping World Truck Series.

Allmendinger, who finished 19th in the 2010 Sprint Cup standings, is back, along with newcomer Marcos Ambrose, who was 26th. The team, no longer associated with previous principal owner George Gillett, will field only two Fords this year.Petty regained control of the team and managed to acquire new investors. The decline of Gillett’s business empire created hardships, particularly during the latter half of the 2010 season.Allmendinger hopes, and believes, that smaller will

be better.“This team has had a lot of good resources, but it was just spread too thin,” he said. “Obviously we went through a rough time at the end of last year that we fought through, and hopefully we are better because of that. We are more funded now, and more money helps.”Ambrose, the Australian driver previously at JTG/Daugherty Motorsports, said, “We need to win, no doubt about it. We expect

to win.…If we can win races and be consistent, then you never know what is possible.”

• A rough neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, known as Pigtown was the birthplace of the “Sultan of Swat,” George Herman Ruth Jr. Of the family’s eight children, only George and one sister survived. His mother battled tuberculosis for many years, and when he was just seven years old, his father brought him to an orphanage/reformatory, St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, operated by the Xaverian Brothers Jesuit missionaries. There, Ruth Sr. signed over custody of his son, and for the next 12 years, Babe saw his family only on special occasions. He learned the trade of tailoring and shirt making at the school, and played in the school band. • Brother Mathias Boutlier was St. Mary’s Head of Discipline and took young Ruth under his wing, teaching him the game of baseball. In 1919, at 19, Ruth signed with the Boston Red Sox, and being the youngest member of the team, was given the nickname “Babe.” He was sold to the Yankees five years later and contributed to the team’s seven pennants and four World Series titles. Prior to his arrival, the Yankees had never won a pennant. • In 1927, the Bambino became the first player to hit 60 homers in one season, a record that stood until 1961 when it was broken by Roger Maris. His record of 714 home runs was on the books for 41 years. He retired at age 40 in 1935 after 21 seasons. The Babe perished from throat cancer in 1948.• Hank Aaron spent his childhood in poverty, picking cotton on an Alabama farm. When his family didn’t have money for baseball equipment, he hit bottle caps with sticks. Attending high school in Mobile, Hank played outfield and

third base on the school’s championship team but was also a success on the football team. In fact, he received several scholarship offers to play college football, but turned them down, knowing that baseball was his first love. • A spot on a Negro League team, the Mobile Black Bears, came along in his junior year of high school, and Aaron was paid $10 per game. At 17, he was given a minor league contract with the Indianapolis Clowns, part of the Negro American League. Three years later in 1954, he started his major league career, one that would span 23 seasons. By 1955, Aaron had already made his first All-Star team, a feat he would repeat 20 more times. He spent 21 seasons with the Braves (first Milwaukee, then Atlanta). His final two seasons were with the Milwaukee Brewers. • In the final game of the 1973 season, “Hammerin’ Hank” tied Babe Ruth’s home run record of 714. During the ensuing winter, he received death threats and hate mail from those who didn’t want to see the Babe’s record broken by a black man. On April 8, 1974, in a game between the Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Aaron reached that goal on a pitch from Al Downing. In October of that year, he hit his 733rd home, which proved to be his last as a member of the Braves ball club. Within a month, the Braves traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers.• During Aaron’s first season with the Brewers, he broke Babe Ruth’s all-time RBI record of 2,217. Aaron still holds the all-time record with 2,297 runs batted in. His final home run, No. 755, was achieved during his last season in July of 1976, a record that stayed in place until 2007, when Barry Bonds hit his 756th.

QUESTION: I recently read an article where a resident’s attempt to thaw frozen pipes using a small blowtorch led to a fire that burned out four apartments. Can you remind readers that there are other methods to address frozen pipes and that extreme methods like using a blowtorch should be undertaken only by a licensed plumber? — Jesse L., MinneapolisANSWER: Thank you for the reminder, Jesse! A blowtorch is a very unsafe method for thawing frozen pipes for exactly the reason described above. There are other methods to try.First, prevention: Keep an eye on weather forecasts. When a freeze warning is issued, make sure that at least one tap at the highest or farthest part of the house from the water main is left dripping. Next, quick action: Monitor the dripping tap throughout the freeze; if the drip slows, turn the tap to a running stream and begin searching for cold spots in the pipe. The likeliest places for frozen pipes are in sections of pipe located next to uninsulated walls or in uninsulated parts of the home. Run your hand along the pipe, looking for sections that are noticeably colder than the rest. Safe thawing: Hot towels laid over a freezing or frozen section of pipe is a safe and fairly effective method of thawing pipes. Have a helper heat water in the kitchen — not to boiling, just comfortably warm — and bring the pot of water to you. Using several towels in succession, dip a towel in the water, wring it out slightly, and wrap it around the freezing section. When the towel gets cold, repeat the process with a new towel. Have your helper keep bringing you water. If you’re working in an area with access to a standard electrical outlet, you have additional options. Setting up an electric kettle will allow you to keep hot water close at hand as you work. Or, instead of the wet thawing method, you can use a hair dryer, holding it close to the pipe (be sure there is no standing water around, however — if the pipe has burst or water is leaking from elsewhere, don’t bring electric appliances into the picture). A space heater can warm the entire space — again, keep it away from standing water, as well as from combustible objects like cloth. If the pipe thaws safely, you’ll know it, as the water stream in the monitored tap increases. At this point you’ll want to insulate the pipe right away. If you don’t have access to foam pipe wraps, use the best insulating material handy: layers of dry towels, spare foam rubber, and so on, secured with duct tape.If you can’t get the pipe thawed, or it begins to swell and leak, contact a plumber. If the pipe bursts, shut off the water supply to the pipe (unfortunately this will likely mean the main gets shut off) and open all faucets along the run. Place a container under the pipe to catch water and wait for the plumber. In more comfortable weather and less of an emergency, insulate all your exposed water supply pipes and look at ways to limit the amount of cold air reaching them.HOME TIP: Going on a trip in winter? Leave the thermostat on at about 58 degrees F, open cabinet doors under sinks to let air flow, and have a relative or neighbor check the house during freezes to prevent serious water damage should a pipe freeze and burst.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

THE MASTER MICKELSONThough derided for being one of the more boring years in recent sports memory, 2010 did offer up more than its fair share of drama. The sports headline in 2010 more than likely dealt with the lingering fallout from the steroid scandals, off-field idiocies, text messages and gun arrests (in many cases, all of the above) that typify what passes for sports reporting these days. We’re in the deadball era of sports reporting…an era where the press corps is in decline, where coaches clam up and deliver the same pat answers — presser after presser, game after game — with unchecked impunity. It’s an era where the most energetic reporters don’t write for a newspaper and have never shared a beer with their major-league sources, yet have a hard time obtaining credentials for some minor-league hockey game being played somewhere out near Barstow.“Tone” and delivery are valued, and stories that require a healthy dose of a reader’s receptiveness die on the

vine as what passes for today’s media corps focuses on the low-hanging fruit of sordid, streaming minutiae. It is in this era that the timeless vision of Phil “Lefty” Mickelson’s Masters victory at Augusta — after he birdied to clinch the Masters and ended up in the loving, kiss-filled embrace of his wife, Amy.Woods, as in years past, still managed to dominate the news, even on that day. His 20-month estrangement from golf and imminent divorce seemed to get more press than the 13 months that Amy suffered from breast cancer. Mickelson’s mother had been battling the same disease for more than a year, too. He may have been one of the richest men in the world, may have been the second most decorated and actively competitive golfer in the world, and it didn’t matter. He just wants to sell cheeseburgers and take time off to have dates with his wife and breakfast with his daughters. Jack Nicklaus bristles if he gets the “Tiger Woods question” too many times at one sitting. Will Nicklaus be upset when Woods — inevitably — shatters all of his records? Steamed, Nicklaus always shakes his head. Just once, he says, just once he’d like to see someone on the PGA “really go after [Tiger].” He’s too old to do it himself and he’s too old to understand that on an Internet bulletin board somewhere, somebody is complaining about how Mickelson could have taken the No. 1 seed by playing in a few more tournaments in 2010. Those folks need to stop with the comparisons, put down the mouse and look at the actions of a real man named Phil Mickelson.

elavskyQ: Can you tell me if “Sanctuary” will be back on TV for another season? I really hope so, because it is one of the most original and interesting dramas on television today. — Jamie J., via e-mailA: You’re in luck — Syfy has greenlighted a fourth season of “Sanctuary,” which is scheduled to begin production on a 13-episode season this spring in Vancouver, B.C., with an eye toward a fall 2011 premiere. “Sanctuary” follows brilliant scientist Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team, who use their unique combination of instinct, medicine and cutting-edge science to find and aid a clandestine population of beings that the world refuses to believe exists.

Q: What can you tell me about my favorite new TV couple: Detective Esposito and Dr. Parrish on “Castle”? I’ve been wanting them together forever, and now that it’s happened, I can hardly believe it! — Suzie W., Conyers, Ga.A: Well, believe it, Suzie! The fans spoke, and the higher-ups actually listened! I chatted recently with Tamala Jones, who portrays the beautiful and slightly sassy medical examiner Dr. Lanie Parrish, and this is what she told me about how it all came about: “Jon (Huertas, Detective Esposito) started campaigning for this last season. He got all of the Twitter fans to join him and get this thing going. And the producers decided: ‘OK, let’s do it. If it’s what they want to see, let’s give it to them.’ That’s the one thing that our producers definitely pay attention to — Twitter and e-mails they receive about what people want to see.”

Q: Did Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have another baby? When did this happen? I’ve seen her at premieres and on awards shows, and she never looked pregnant to me! — Fred D., Tacoma, Wash.A: Nicole has had a history of difficult pregnancies and miscarriages, so for this baby, the couple decided to use a gestational surrogate. This means that the egg came from

Nicole and the sperm from Keith; however, they used a surrogate to carry the baby to term for them. Daughter Faith Margaret was born Dec. 28 in Nashville.

READERS: With the Academy Awards coming up, many readers are asking for my Oscar picks. I’ll give it a go, but let me warn you, I haven’t batted over .500 since the year “Titanic” swept the awards. Here are my main-category picks: Best Picture: “The Social Network”; Best Director: David Fincher (“The Social Network”); Best Actor: Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”); Best Actress: Natalie Portman (“Black

Swan”); Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale (“The Fighter”); Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”); and Best Animated Feature: “Toy Story 3.” Tune into the awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 27, to see how many I got right.
