SeniorNews LineIf you receive a monthly check for Social Security, Social Security Disability Insurance, veterans benefits or any other kind of federal government benefit, you’ll soon need to change the way you handle your money. The paper check is going away. By March 1, 2013, you’ll need to decide on an electronic method of receiving your money.Your choices will be:• Electronic direct deposit — the money will magically appear in your bank account.• Direct deposit debit card — the money will magically appear in your card account. Signing up for the card is free. You can get ATM cash, make purchases, call for your balance and pay bills, although there might be fees for certain ATM machines.According to a news release, moving to an all-electronic system will save $1 billion over the next 10 years. It currently costs $120 million per year to send out paper checks. The government says that 80 percent of us are already signed up to receive our money electronically. And of

those who do, 96 percent are happy with it.If you haven’t yet applied for Social Security, you’ll have no choice. As of May 1, 2011, anyone who signs up has to choose electronic payments. If you’re about to sign up and want direct deposit, you’ll need your bank’s routing transit number, type of account and account number. If you don’t have a bank account, you can receive a direct deposit MasterCard. To make the switch, call the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-333-1795, or inquire at your bank.If you’re already signed up electronically, you don’t need to change anything.

• Bans evictions, if rents are less than $2,400 per month,• Prevents double taxation that comes from spouses working in a state different from the one that is the family’s legal residence,• Bans apartment or car-lease termination fees (if you’re sent elsewhere for more than 90 days) • Protects from default life-insurance policies up to $250,000.That big bank is going to be awhile mopping up the mess. Among other things it will be giving back homes it foreclosed on if the actions were done in violation of the SCRA, and giving money to those military families who were wronged. (How will they give the homes back if they’ve already been sold to others, we wonder?)If you were wronged while you were on active duty, speak up. If your bank charged you too much for mortgage interest, it should be recalculating that and sending you a refund. If it foreclosed while you were on active duty, contact your state’s attorney general. To read more about this, search online for the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.

If you lost your home to foreclosure or were overcharged on your mortgage while you were called to active duty or were serving in harm’s way, you could be due some relief. Thanks to a lawsuit, a certain large bank will be paying out tens of millions of dollars. Six thousand members of the military accused the bank of overcharging them on mortgages, and they sued based on the protections of the Servicemember’s Civil Relief Act.The SCRA, an improved version of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act, offers protections for debts that were incurred before becoming active duty or deploying. The act:• Caps mortgage payments at 6 percent,• Caps credit-card and installment debt at 6 percent interest, and any extra interest cannot be charged later,

TOYS (continued):Slinkys. They began producing and selling the coiled wire as a toy in 1945. Each one is made of 80 feet of wire, and to date, over a quarter billion Slinkys have been sold worldwide.D In 1916, Frank Lloyd Wright and his son John Lloyd Wright supervised constriction of the Imperial Palace Hotel in Tokyo. The hotel was assembled with an inner frame of wood to withstand earthquakes. John was inspired by this method of building, and it gave him the idea to create a line of sturdy, interlocking toy building logs sold as Lincoln Logs.D 1940, during World War II, rubber in the United States was scarce and the shortage began to hamper war production efforts, especially for truck tires and boots. American industry was called upon by the government to develop a synthetic rubber compound. James Wright, an engineer working for General Electric, experimented with combining boric acid and silicone oil in a test tube. The compound “polymerized,” resulting in a bizarre substance with unusual properties. It bounced, stretched and could be broken in pieces, yet it had no practical use.D In 1949, the mixture eventually made its way to a toy-shop owner who put some of the “Nutty Putty,” (as she called it) in her holiday toy catalog. It out-sold everything but Crayola® crayons. The name was later changed to Silly Putty, and it is

D A decade later in California, a flying-saucer enthusiast named Walter Morrison designed a saucer-like disk as a toy for throwing. It was produced by a company named Wham-O. While on a promotional tour of college campuses, the president of Wham-O encountered the pie-plate-tossing craze at Yale. And so the flying saucer from California was renamed after the pie plate from Connecticut. The spelling was changed from Frisbie to Frisbee to avoid any legal problems.D What we know today as the Yo-Yo is possibly the second oldest toy in the world after dolls. getting ready tO Buy a HOMeIf you hope to buy a home soon, there are steps you can take in advance to make sure you’re in the best possible position when the time comes.Your first step should be to seek pre-approval — a written letter from a lender. (If you apply to multiple lenders within a few weeks, it won’t count against you on your credit report to have so many inquiries.) Having a lender letter will give you a leg up in knowing just what price range to shop and can make you look better in any negotiations with a seller. If you discover credit problems or mistakes, fix those first to help qualify for a lower interest rate. Over the years, those extra interest dollars can add up to tens of thousands.By seeking lender pre-approval, you’ll also be able to learn which lenders will give you what you’ll want most: a fixed-rate loan. A stable rate over the years will give the security of knowing what your payment will be each month.Don’t make the mistake of buying at the top of your price range. Just because a lender approves you for a certain amount of money doesn’t mean you have to spend that much. Consider future possibilities (loss of a job, an additional child in the family) and aim to spend less than 90 percent of what you’re approved for.Engage the services of a licensed real-estate agent, if only to gain access to the Multiple Listing Service. Ask for referrals before you work with an agent to make sure you don’t fall prey to any scams. Start by looking at home types on Realtor.com to narrow down your target area and wish list.Learn how to really “see” a property as you shop. A sturdy home with only cosmetic flaws can increase in value through the years if you’re willing to do a little work. A property that needs a lot of serious repair can end up as a money pit and jeopardize both your savings and your ability to make your monthly payments.Stay clear of neighborhoods with lots of For Sale signs. Those indicate an area in transition, and you won’t know if it’s moving up or down.

now sold by Binney & Smith, the makers of Crayola. More than 4,500 tons of Silly Putty, enough to fill the Goodyear blimp, have been made since 1950. D Back in the 1870s, a baker named William Frisbie of Bridgeport, Connecticut, had a clever marketing idea. He put the family name in relief on the bottom of the reusable tin pans his company’s homemade pies were sold in. The idea was that every time the pan was used, the person baking would see the name Frisbie. Mr. Frisbie’s pies were sold throughout Connecticut. It was at Yale University sometime in the 1940s where students used the pie tins to play catch, whizzing them through the air.

Are Pets People, Too?By Sam Mazzotta

A recent article in a British newspaper suggested that pet owners stop being called “owners” and start being called “parents.” Why? Because pets are considered so much a part of the family that they shouldn’t be considered property, the article suggested. The trend toward treating a pet like…well, practically another child…isn’t new, but it certainly is growing. According to Hartz Mountain Corp.’s recently released Hartz Trend Report, 47 percent of pet owners surveyed said their pet is like a child to them. Another 42 percent said their pet is comparable to a good friend. There seem to be some real benefits to animals as this trend grows. Most prospective owners surveyed consider “personality” to be more important than a pet’s pedigree. And a growing number have or are considering adopting their pet from a rescue society — 60 percent said so in the survey.

These results don’t necessarily mean that your local mall soon will be filled with “mommies” pushing their beloved Lab or Terrier around in a stroller (most self-respecting medium- to large-sized dogs wouldn’t take that treatment anyway). The people surveyed considered traits like loyalty and obedience to be important qualities. So, what do you think? Is your dog or cat a part of the family, or something even more important — almost another child? Tell me your experience or opinion on the matter by emailing me at [email protected]. Or, check out the informal poll on my website at www.pawscorner.com.

Marty Bergen’s sequel to his popular 1995 book “Points Schmoints!” — aptly titled “More Points Schmoints!” — is just as informative and enjoyable as its predecessor.Just as the first one was, the book is primarily a compendium of sage advice on a variety of subjects. It includes sections on hand evaluation, pre-emptive bidding, and signaling, among others, plus a discussion of conventions such as Drury, DONT and even Crawling Stayman. Sprinkled throughout are more of the amusing anecdotes and words of wisdom that readers found so entertaining in the original.Today’s deal is taken from the section on defensive card play:“You are West, looking at a terrific hand. You are getting ready to do some serious bidding when South opens three spades. That is kind of annoying but, no choice, you bid the obvious four hearts. The auction continues with four spades by LHO, back around to you. Should you double? Probably not. Should you bid at the five-level all by yourself? No, that is crazy. So you pass.“It is your lead. How about your singleton? No, that is unilateral. You make the normal lead of the heart ace. Partner signals with the seven. You continue with your king and everyone follows, partner playing the deuce. How do you defend? Think about where you will find the setting trick.“The winning defense is for West to cash the club ace immediately and continue with the heart eight. It would be wrong for him to lead a heart honor, as this would tell East not to ruff. Leading your lowest heart will make it obvious for partner to ruff with his spade queen. Declarer will be forced to overruff, promoting your jack for the setting trick. This elegant play is called an uppercut.“It was crucial to cash the club ace first. Suppose you led the eight of hearts at trick three. When partner correctly ruffed with his spade queen, declarer would discard his club loser and easily win all the remaining tricks.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Do you have information on gout? I am 65, and my son-in-law is 32. We both have it. It is so painful. My doctor was pretty vague. He asked me to go on the computer to find which foods I should or should not eat. I found that you can’t eat meat and fish, but salmon and chicken are all right. Some vegetables can’t be eaten. How about tomatoes and tomato products? Does one attack mean gout is forever? What is the medicine of choice? — C.B.ANSWER: Gout comes about when the blood uric-acid level rises. Uric acid seeps into joints to form needle-shaped crystals that cause joint swelling and unspeakable pain. Uric acid, in turn, is a byproduct of cell chemistry. Its blood level rises because a person makes too much or passes too little into the urine.A first gout attack most often occurs in the joint at the base

of the big toe. The skin over the joint turns red, and the joint swells and becomes exceedingly painful. One of the best ways of diagnosing gout is to draw fluid from the affected joint and examine it with a microscope to see the needle-shaped uric-acid crystals. Gout can affect other joints: the knee, wrist, ankle and fingers. One attack of gout doesn’t call for lifelong treatment.Indocin (indomethacin) is the drug most often used for an acute gout attack. Colchicine and cortisone also work well. Medicines for gout prevention are taken if a person has frequent attacks (two or three a year), has formed uric-acid kidney stones, has kidney damage secondary to gout or passes large amounts of uric acid into the urine. Zyloprim (allopurinol) reduces uric acid production. Probenecid increases its elimination into the urine. Uloric, a new gout drug, is for those not responding to these two.Diet was the sole means for gout treatment in the old days. Now, with effective medicines, it takes a back seat. You ought to eliminate organ meats — liver, kidney, sweetbreads and brain. Decrease but don’t eliminate red meat and shellfish. Beer should be avoided. Wine can be taken in small amounts. Soft drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup (and most do) shouldn’t be drunk. You can eat all vegetables and any vegetable you want. That’s the gout diet. Not complicated. The booklet on gout explains this common disorder in

i i iDEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. — P.M.ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components dissolved in the water are left behind. You can drink distilled water. You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much.

This Time It Counts for Regan SmithDARLINGTON, S.C. — Twice Regan Smith has crossed a Sprint Cup finish line first. At Darlington

Raceway, it finally counted. There’s no need to dredge up 2008, when Smith was penalized at the end of a race at Talladega credited to Tony Stewart. Besides, Smith said he’d rather win the Southern 500 anyway. What’s the use of living in the past? What’s the use of letting old wounds fester?“This isn’t a knock on Talladega at all, but I would trade [it all] for one win in the Southern 500,” said Smith in the wee hours of Sunday morning. “This is so special. We were looking at the names and faces on the trophy.“You think about it. My face is going to be right there next to these guys and it’s going to be there forever. You can’t change that. It certainly means a lot to me.”Some races go to the guy in the fastest car. Others go to the guy who plays his cards right. Darlington isn’t a rabbit. No one pulls it out of a hat. Strategy — staying out while others pitted — put Smith in position, but when the field went to the post for

the final time, Smith’s betting line was about the same as a horse named Animal Kingdom earlier in the day.Carl Edwards couldn’t catch him. Enough said.Smith drives a relatively plain black Chevy headquartered in Denver, Colo., in the only sport

where the most important Denver (at least until Saturday night) was in North Carolina. It’s No. 78, for gosh sakes. That’s like an outfielder wearing, uh, No. 78.The odds are still long, but things are looking up. Smith’s still starring in “Mission: Impossible.” For his next task, which he chooses to accept, he has to prove that a “1” in the 10th race is more significant than the 24.4 average of the first nine.

“Any win is special,” said Smith. “This one is even more special. To get the first one here…it’s certainly a big deal. “We survived and we won.”That’s the way it works at Darlington.

F Jason Redman, Bryan Stuart, Kevin Ivory and Mike Day are four distinguished U.S. service veterans who experienced horrific battles while in combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were severely wounded but overcame the odds of survival and found new physical and emotional strength through Camp Patriot — an outdoor program for disabled veterans. The program is designed to show veterans that in spite of injuries incurred in the line of duty, with the right help, their dreams are not lost.F “The mission is to renew the dreams and visions of our disabled veterans for a meaningful future. And to create relationships for them through outdoor adventures that will promote positive, life-changing experiences. It’s kind of giving them the light at the end of the tunnel and saying, ‘Life isn’t over; we’re just living it a little differently,’” said Camp Patriot’s founder Micah Clark. F The camp provides a range of outdoor activities for veterans with an array of disabilities at no cost to them.F Each veteran is matched by Camp Patriot staff with potential activities, and special equipment is supplied for those who need it. Camp activities range from the extreme, like climbing Mt. Rainier, to more moderate activities, like fly-fishing in Montana. F Redman, Stuart, Ivory and Day are participants in

Camp Patriot and have all trained together to climb Mount Rainier with the help of Iron90, Camp Patriot’s official fitness training partner. “I’m just humbled to be able to do this and give back,” Iron90 co-founder Robert Vera said. “I see the sacrifice they made for not only them, but their families and the community we have. It represents a fabric of support.”F The climbers say it is not just about support, it is also about inspiration. “It shows the wounded guys, ‘Hey if I can climb Mount Rainier, there’s nothing I can’t do.’ Even bigger than that, it shows Americans if they see wounded guys doing this, they should be saying to themselves, ‘If these guys can do this, what’s stopping me from accomplishing my dreams?’” Redman said. “Doing stuff like this will boost confidence, and it gets them on the track to getting back to what their new normal is going to be,” Day said.F The four wounded veterans made it to the summit of 14,411-foot (4392.47 m) Mount Rainier on July 10, 2010, with a team of devoted guides and other volunteers. Their individual stories are of bravery and heroism in the face of insurmountable challenges, both physical and emotional. With the help of organizations like Camp Patriot and their sponsors, these men have held onto their inner strength to overcome the disabilities that have changed their lives forever.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: INNER HUMAN STRENGTH Each of us has the capacity to overcome the most extreme adversity in our lives. But

perhaps no one more so than the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving in our military. Four U.S. soldiers tapped into their strength reserves

with help from Camp Patriot and are inspiring others with their accomplishments.

TOYS (continued):displayed in museums and pictured on the walls of Egyptian temples. The yo-yo is known to have been popular with Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington. In the 1920s, a Philippine immigrant named Pedro Flores came to Santa Monica and worked as a bellhop. He had grown up carving and playing with wooden yo-yos, which was a traditional pastime in the Philippines. On his coffee breaks, Flores always drew a crowd playing games with his yo-yo. He became the first person to mass-produce the toy and is responsible for the name Yo-Yo, which means “come-come” in Philippine. An entrepreneur named Donald Duncan saw the Flores toy, liked it, bought the rights from Flores in 1929, and then trademarked

the name Yo-Yo. Duncan changed the string from a tied knot to the looped slip-string, which allows the user to do advanced tricks.D In 1767 London, an engraver and mapmaker named John Spilsbury created the first jigsaw puzzle as an aid in teaching students geography. He glued a map of England and Wales on a sheet of hardwood and cut around the borders of the countries using a fine-bladed saw. The jigsaw puzzle was born. The idea caught on, and people began making puzzles out of pictures as a form of entertainment. These early jigsaw puzzles did not interlock; that wasn’t possible until the invention of power tools more than a century later. In 1880, Milton Bradley made the first jigsaw puzzle for children called “The Smashed Up Locomotive.”

inVasiVe Plant Can OVerrun garden

QUESTION: Help! I planted just one mint plant last summer in my flower and herb patch. It died off during the winter, but now several small mint plants are springing up around the dead plant and spreading out around the patch and into my grass. How can I limit this plant’s growth? — Sandra H., via emailANSWER: Mint, like several other types of plants (including bamboo, jasmine and wisteria among others), will take over your garden if it’s not watched carefully. As a weed, it’s opportunistic and hardy. Of course, it’s also a great herb to have on hand, especially in the heat of summer when it’s a great addition to a frosty porch drink. As the plant is spreading right in the midst of the other plants in the flower and herb patch during the growth season, ripping all the offending roots out is not yet possible. Through the summer and early fall, hand-weed the mint back as close to its original spot as possible. Because the mint roots spread underground, be careful not to pull up the roots of surrounding herbs and flowers as you weed. Since you’re using it as part of the herb patch, don’t try using a weed-killing chemical on it. To keep mint from spreading beyond its roots, don’t allow it to flower — snap off flowering extensions if and as they appear.Once the growing season is over and all your herbs have been harvested, you can take more drastic measures. Dig up the garden patch, turning over the soil, so that you can locate and remove all of the plant’s root extensions. You may need to remove part of the lawn sod on which the mint spread as well, in order to locate and remove mint roots from it. Reseed or resod before the first hard frost — otherwise cover with straw and reseed in early spring. If you plan to keep the mint plant, I’d recommend carefully digging it up and transplanting it to a solid-sided pot. It can be then kept and tended above ground.HOME TIP: Want to start an herb garden? Ask at your local garden shop, or research the best types of herbs for your area. Also learn how to keep invasive herbs from spreading beyond their growing area.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

A BIG ‘MAYBE’ FOR MAYOn the ice, on the court (in the court), on the diamond and in the ring, the fifth month of 2011 yielded more than its fair share of meltdowns and missteps, at least in the early going. In hockey, already down a superstar in Sidney Crosby this postseason, the NHL had a lot riding on the back of Alex Ovechkin and his top-seeded Washington Capitals. They dispatched the New York Rangers, but then quickly took a seat — literally — at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round of Lord Stanley’s playoffs. And while the Boston Bruins, who stepped on the necks of the Philadelphia Flyers to meet the Lightning, may offset the sweep of the Capitals for some casual observers, it can hardly be enough for Boston fans. They die hard, but you could hear the howls of protest on Hanover Street as the Celtics got bounced from the NBA playoffs, feel the queasiness in Quincy as they witnessed the Red Sox limp out of the gate in a season that many picked them to win it all. Still, in championship-starved Washington, D.C., even

casual fans had to notice, as they did last year, the appalling performance carved out before them on Capital ice.How quickly the euphoria of slugging it out during the stretch run to make the playoff or tournament cut subsides when you’re sent packing in less than a week of getting there. It’s like getting into the college of your choosing and then sleeping through exam day. As such, the playoffs of any sport are graded on a pass/fail basis. And you know that’s how they’re looking at it in Los Angeles. When you have a Phil Jackson-coached team stacked with talent, a roster that includes the league’s best sixth man and biggest star, and you fail to even make a dent in the Dallas Mavericks, you know what the problem is. Instead of raising the bar, they closed them, and the outcome was “fail.” The Lakers thought their talent could rise to any occasion, that they didn’t have to study hard. Now we’ll see if they reapply next year.In the ring, 1.2 million bought into the idea that Shane Mosely’s warrior spirit could catch Manny Pacquio in their championship bout. This, of course, didn’t occur. Great to see Manny in action — not so good to see Shane’s brains rattled for 12 rounds. But then, in one weekend, Derek Jeter smacks two home runs to shut up the New York press for at least a millisecond, and a stallion named Animal Kingdom kicks it down the stretch in Kentucky. You’re only as good as your last game…so maybe May will work itself out all right.

Q: When will one of my favorite shows, “Drop Dead Diva,” be back for its next season? — Gennifer T., via emailA: Well, you don’t have long to wait! “Drop Dead Diva” returns to Lifetime Television for its third season on Sunday, June 19. For those who haven’t seen the show, “DDD” is a one-hour comedic drama that tells the story of a shallow wannabe model who dies in a sudden accident, only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney, Jane. This season’s guest stars include Paula Abdul, Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, Clay Aiken, Lance Bass, Amanda Bearse, Tony Goldwyn, Howard Hesseman, Sharon Lawrence, Jennifer Tilly, Quinton Aaron and more.

i i iQ: I was watching a new sitcom on ABC called “Happy Endings,” and the actor who plays Dave looks very familiar. What else might I have seen him in? — Jerry G., via emailA: Well, I remember Zachary Knighton best as Bryce from the shouldn’t-have-been-canceled show “FlashForward.” I also rewatched “The Prince and Me” recently, and realized that he plays one of Julia Stiles’ brothers in that movie. He’s also had guest roles on “House, M.D.” and “Bones,” as well as “Law and Order” and “Law and Order: SVU.” Stop me when something sounds familiar….

i i iQ: I was so happy to hear that FX’s “Justified” has been renewed for a third season; however, I was sad to see Joseph Lyle Taylor’s character, Doyle, get killed in the second-season finale. Now that his run on “Justified” is over, where can I

catch this talented actor next? — Fanny R., Tulsa, Okla.A: Joseph’s next role is that of Martin Chisholm in the feature film “Seven Days in Utopia,” which also stars Melissa Leo, Robert Duvall and Lucas Black. Joseph told me a bit about the film: “It’s really a heartfelt movie about this kid, played by Lucas

Black, finding himself. I play his father. It’s such a pretty script.“My character rides his son hard to do his best in golf and makes him practice and this and that. He ends up giving him some bad advice, and his son ends up not winning the tournament, takes off and that is where he meets Robert Duvall (who plays Johnny Crawford) out in Utopia. He learns some life lessons out there, and he comes back and tries to make amends with his father. It’s really touching.”

i i iQ: What has my favorite

actress, Meryl Streep, been up to lately? — David R. in AlabamaA: Meryl is busy filming “The Iron Lady,” where she plays the U.K.’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Word from the set is that her portrayal is astonishing, and her transformation is absolutely stunning. Look for “The Iron Lady” in late 2011, just in time to be considered for the Oscars.

z It was French writer, artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau who made the following sage observation: “The greatest masterpiece in literature is only a dictionary out of order.”z If you were in or near Springfield, Mo., at the end of April, I hope you took the opportunity to attend a popular local festival: the Typewriter Toss. Every year on April 22 — Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day), appropriately — a local radio station sponsors the event, in which contestants are raised in a lift truck to a height of 50 feet, then compete to see who can land a typewriter closest to the bull’s-eye painted on the ground below.z Those who study such things say that sharks burp. Evidently it’s a mechanism for regulating the depth at which they swim.z Technically speaking, the green pepper is a fruit.

z In the early 20th century, a wealthy Russian living in Odessa died but had no children to inherit his estate. Instead, he left his 4-million ruble fortune to his four nieces. This may not seem unusual, but he did include an odd provision in his will: Each of the girls had to serve for one year as a farm girl, a washerwoman or a chambermaid before she saw any of the money. They did as the will instructed, and during that year of service each received hundreds of proposals of marriage. z The Sahara Desert is spreading southward at a rate of slightly less than one-third of a mile each year.z Showman Buffalo Bill Cody, one of the most flamboyant figures of the Old West, portrayed himself in five films.

Thought of the Week“All the world’s a stage,

and most of us are desperately unrehearsed.”

— Sean O’Casey

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

We each believe in prayer in theory, but it’s hard to actually put practice and live out in our daily lives and decisions..

As you know Hebrews 11 is a chapter on faith. Would you agree with me that one expression of faith would be prayer? The scriptures are clear that it is only through faith that we can please God. Assuming you do agree then the question becomes is faith and prayer an essential relationship? Can you have faith and not pray? Can you pray but not have faith?

So what is the relationship between faith and prayer? Is it as clear to you as it is to me that there is an essential relationship between faith and prayer? If it is then why don’t we pray more?

Do you think it was easier for people in the past to pray for long periods? The studies reveal that we don’t seem to pray as much in today’s society. Did folks in the past simply trust God more?

Why do Christians find it hard to make and take time to pray? Some would say that extended, fervent prayer is unnecessary but

what does God say?In Hebrews we are urged to come boldly

to God to find His grace and forgiveness for our sinfulness in our time of need.

Do you think that we sin less today and therefore need God less? Obviously not. Just take a second, look around and get honest with yourself about your daily life and decisions.

No it is clear that no matter the situation in life, there is always a deep relationship between faith and prayer.

As you reflect on these questions do you find yourself aware that you don’t pray enough and therefore your relationship with Jesus isn’t all that it can and should be? All that it needs to be? All that you long and desire for it to be?

Are you interested in fixing that issue and having a daily relation with Jesus? A daily living relationship with a living Lord?

I think you know the answer! Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

‘Old west’ PlatesQ: Some years ago, I purchased a set of eight plates in Oklahoma from the “Bits of the Old West” series, all designed, engraved and copyrighted by Vernon Kilns, U.S.A. Any information about them would be appreciated. — Pat, Rio Rancho, N.M.A: Vernon Kilns was a pottery firm that operated in Vernon, Calif., from 1916 to about 1980. The company issued dozens of plate series, including “Our America,” “Bits of the Southwest,” “Bits of New England,” “Native American,” and, of course, the set which you have. One of the most popular sets with collectors is “Early California,” which was issued in bright glazed ware in orange, turquoise, green, brown, blue and yellow. Another rare collector set was designed by Walt Disney in 1940. Values vary. A complete set of “Bits of the Southwest” in near-perfect condition recently sold for $65 at a shop in Phoenix.

* * *Q: I have a picture by the famous illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson, creator of “The Gibson Girl.” It is a

signed print, 19 of 350, and I would like to find out if it is saleable. — Kathy, Surprise, Ariz.A: Charles Dana Gibson was, indeed, one of this country’s most famous illustrators. Born in 1867 in Roxbury, Mass., he sold his first sketch in 1886 to Life magazine, a publication edited by John Ames Mitchell. Gibson’s work was so distinctive, it immediately connected with the American public. To find a possible market for your drawing, I suggest you contact The Illustrated Gallery, a company that specializes in period artwork from the golden age of illustration, 1900 to 1960. The contact information is 400 Commerce Drive, Suite B, Fort Washington, PA 19034; www.illustratedgallery.com; and [email protected].

* * *Q: I have a double barrel musket from the 19th century. Can you give me a value for it? — Larry, Kissimmee, Fla.A: I recommend you contact an expert in early firearms. I’m not one. Robert A. Dewar is a member of the International Society of Appraisers and specializes in antique and modern firearms. Contact him c/o Robert A. Dewar and Associates, 512 Canal St., New Smyma Beach, FL 32168.

“The President Is a Sick Man: Wherein the Supposedly Virtuous Grover

Cleveland Survives a Secret Surgery at Sea and Vilifies the Courageous Newspaperman Who

Dared Expose the Truth”by Matthew Algeo

(Chicago Review Press, $24.95)Reviewed by Larry Cox

Grover Cleveland is one of America’s lesser-known presidents. His reputation for honesty while serving as mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York helped Cleveland secure the Democratic nomination for president, and he went on to win the election of 1884. His first term as president is remembered for the civil-service reforms he triggered.Although beaten by Benjamin Harrison in 1888, he ran again in 1892, winning a second but not consecutive term. On July 1, 1893, just five months after beginning his second term as president, a strange thing happened. Cleveland boarded a friend’s yacht, sailed into Long Island Sound and vanished for five days.Newspaper reporter E.J. Edwards began to investigate. He discovered this had been no mere outing, rather, the president had undergone a medical procedure aboard the yacht. Cleveland, despite his reputation for always telling the truth, denied the story, and Edwards was branded as a liar. Now, more than a century later, the truth has finally been revealed in a new book.According to historian Matthew Algeo, a team of doctors aboard the yacht worked feverishly to remove a cancerous tumor from Cleveland’s palate, along with much of his upper jaw. This required a partial reconstruction of the president’s face.Drawing on newspaper accounts, interviews, declassified documents and medical files, Algeo explores an extraordinary event that occurred at a time when the national economy was in a tailspin. It was no small feat to coordinate a secret surgery requiring a five-day absence of the president. Even the vice-president was kept in the dark. Why Cleveland thought his tumor removal must remain a secret and how his closest advisers pulled it off is so bizarre, it shocks even a century later.
