SeniorNews LineResearch recently presented at The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference indicates that Alzheimer’s disease could potentially be prevented for millions just by reducing lifestyle risks. The lifestyle risks and the percentage of Alzheimer’s they are associated with are: smoking (11 percent), obesity in midlife (7 percent), diabetes (3 percent), depression (15 percent), physical inactivity (21 percent), high blood pressure in midlife (8 percent) and low education (7 percent). That’s not to say it’s absolutely certain that these risk factors can cause Alzheimer’s, but scientists believe that about half the cases could be prevented.According to a paper by researcher Deborah Barnes, a professor at University of California San Francisco, a reduction of 25 percent across all the risk factors could prevent nearly a half-million occurrences of Alzheimer’s in the U.S. alone. These are estimates, of course, and further research has to be done.Another paper at the same conference addressed the maintenance of cognition while aging. Cognition is the mental processes, such as problem solving, memory and

learning.Seniors over the age of 65 with no impairment were given a battery of tests for cognition, stress, personality traits and depression, as well as physical tests. What scientists concluded was that scoring low on trauma, depression, stress and anxiety was related to keeping good cognitive health. They gave an example of the characteristics of coping: “developing a strategy, remaining positive, getting advice and taking action.” Researchers hope to make these tests part of a Resilience Index to assess patients for risk right in the doctor’s office. If more incentives are needed to make changes in lifestyle, this is surely one. Be more active, quit smoking and deal with high blood pressure — and you’ll possibly avoid Alzheimer’s at the same time.

“The results of physical examination of the chest were normal in all the soldiers,” says the report.Until doctors got the lung biopsy samples, that is. All manner of gunk and goop (including “lacy black pigment”) were found that did not show up on scans and physical examination, with tests negative for bacteria and fungus. The study says that, yes, those who were exposed to the sulfur mine fire smoke could be expected to have the problem. But what of those who had no exposure but who still have this condition? The concern, according to the researchers, is that whatever it was that caused the condition was also present for everyone else.Since the study officially ended, nine more in the group were diagnosed with constrictive bronchiolitis. The study concludes: “Additional studies are needed to evaluate the particulate matter observed in many biopsy samples obtained from these soldiers.”To read the whole study, go to www.nejm.org and search for Constrictive Bronchiolitis in Soldiers Returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

What Was in the air?“Inhalation injury” they call it, when simple breathing is dangerous because there’s some unknown toxin in the air. The New England Journal of Medicine recently reported on a study of veterans developing breathing problems after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.“Exertional dyspnea” is medical lingo for shortness of breath, which is why 80 soldiers from Fort Campbell, Ky., were sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center: They were no longer able to run 2 miles in the allotted time. After testing, half the group was diagnosed with constrictive bronchiolitis, narrowing of the airway, which is rare in healthy adults. The age range was 23 to 44, and all were fit. Some had been exposed to dust storms and burn-pit smoke. Eleven of them, however, did not have any exposure whatsoever.

AUGUST EVENTS (continued):Seattle Mariner Ruppert Jones hit a foul ball in the Kingdome that stuck in the stadium’s loudspeaker above the first base line. The following August, Yankee Bob Watson had a hit off the Kingdome’s center-field speaker. The very next day, Watson did exactly the same thing! Shortly after that feat, the speakers were raised from 102 feet (31 m) above the field to 132 feet (40.2 m). In August of 1983, Yankee pitcher Dave Winfield threw a warm-up ball and accidentally struck and killed a seagull at the Toronto Blue Jays’ stadium. But pitcher Nolan Ryan was in complete control during August of 1989 when he became the first Major League pitcher to achieve 5,000 strikeouts. By the time he retired four years later, he had struck out 5,714 batters. F It’s been 34 years this month since the death of Elvis Presley at age 42 at his Graceland home. The official cause of death was listed as coronary arrhythmia. The King’s funeral was held at his home, with a processional to Forest Hill Cemetery following the service. More than 80,000 people lined the route. F Henry Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in August of 1902, naming it after his ancestor, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit in 1701. F When William Gray’s wife became very ill in 1888, he was in desperate need of a telephone to call a doctor. There were very few phones in Hartford, Connecticut, and Gray ran to a neighboring factory, begging to use theirs, but was told it was not for public use. When the owners finally gave in to his pleading, the doctor was reached, and Mrs. Gray recovered. This incident spurred Gray, a machinist, to invent a coin-operated telephone. He received his patent in August of 1889, and the first

It’s now one of Washington state’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing 10 million visitors annually. F Visit Twinsburg, Ohio, during the first weekend of August, and you can get in on the Twins Day Festival. When it began in 1976, the community hosted 37 sets of twins. Attendance reached a peak of 2,680 sets in 1994 and settled in at 1,700 last year. Debit-CarD ChangesA short five years ago, banks were pushing us to use our debit cards. Rewards programs with points, flyer miles, cash back — it all added up in our favor. Now, however, if you have a debit card that’s part of a rewards program, you might have a limited amount of time to cash in those rewards. If your debit card is with a big bank, your rewards program is probably going to be cancelled — if it hasn’t been already. The reason for these changes, say the banks, is the Durbin Amendment. The legislation puts a cap on the per-transaction cost that banks charge merchants for each swipe of a debit card, down from 44 cents to 21 cents per swipe, plus a percentage of the transaction total. No more massive millions moving into card issuers hands in the form of swipe fees means no more rewards-program benefits for you.Banks are looking for new ways to recoup the lost money. If you get an information leaflet in your bank statement, read it. You could learn that your free checking account will no longer be free, or that you’ll need to maintain certain balances for it to be free, or that you’ll be limited to a certain number of debit-card transactions per month, or that your ATM transactions are no longer free, or that you’ll no longer receive a paper statement without paying for it.However, that same problem for card issuers might get you a discount from merchants, especially for big-ticket items. If you shop locally at smaller businesses, you have a better chance of asking for and getting a discount, since the merchant won’t be paying high swipe fees and percentages of the purchase cost. Always ask.Banks and credit unions with assets less than $10 billion are exempt, and if you switch to a smaller bank, you might get a better deal on the fees that the big banks will surely impose. Before you let yourself be pushed toward putting purchases on your credit card because of a potential rewards program, rethink your plan. While new laws are in place for credit-card fees, you still have to pay the money back. The new debit card law takes effect in October, just in time for holiday shopping.

payphone was installed at a local bank. By 1902, the United States was home to 81,000 payphones.F The first and last atomic bombings in history took place in August of 1945. The United States dropped the first nuclear weapon, known as “Little Boy,” on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6 and the second, called “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki three days later. Fatality estimates for Hiroshima were 90,000 to 160,000 people and 60,000 to 80,000 for Nagasaki. F On an August morning in 1907, Seattle residents shopped at the Pike Place Market for the first time. This famous street market came into being because citizens were tired of being overcharged for their produce. Avoiding the middleman, farmers brought their wares to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street, and were met by more than 10,000 shoppers.

Dog Tormented by AllergiesBy Sam Mazzotta

QUESTION: My 7-year-old dog, “Cara,” itches terribly and scratches all the time. She may have allergies, but I’m not certain. I’ve tried a number of treatments, including Benadryl, steroids, special shampoos and conditioners, sprays, pills, etc. I have her groomed regularly, and during the last trip had her fur shaved off because it tangles so badly when it’s long. Nothing helps! Is there anything you could suggest? — A Reader, via e-mailANSWER: I’m sorry to hear how Cara is suffering. I’m sure you’ve taken her to the vet for a complete examination to rule out other underlying causes, but I do want to mention it for my other readers’ sake.Dogs can suffer from allergies to many of the same things we humans do. Allergens like dust and dander, as well as flea bites, can cause allergic

symptoms. Certain foods also can cause allergic reactions including skin reactions, itching, diarrhea and vomiting. You’ve tried several common medications to relieve allergy symptoms, without any improvement. It’s time to consult the veterinarian again. Look at Cara’s diet, including snacks and “sneaked” food that you may have caught her trying to get at. Also note her home environment, where she spends most of her time, and the objects, carpeting and plants around her. Talk with the vet about any other possible causes of her allergies.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please tell me if a digital mammogram is a great deal better than a regular mammogram. If I need to pay part of the cost, I don’t mind, if it’s worth it. I don’t want to pay for something that is simply “newer.” — S.P.ANSWER: With a conventional mammogram, the image of the breast is captured on film, like a photographic image. With a digital mammogram, the image is captured electronically on bits of computer code, like a digital camera does. The techniques for taking a digital mammogram are the same as those for a conventional one. Digital mammograms are easier to store, and digital images are available immediately

but are more costly.A large study of almost 50,000 women concluded that the accuracy between digital and conventional mammograms is not significantly different. However, in women younger than 50 and in women with dense breasts, digital mammograms provide better pictures. Unless your doctor has directed you to get digital mammograms, you can rely on standard mammograms to serve you well. The booklet on breast cancer provides information on its detection and treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For many years, I have put up with floaters. I am quite nearsighted, and my eye doctor says they’re common in nearsighted people. Last week, I saw flashes of light. I called the doctor, and he saw me that day. He told me I had a vitreous

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Digital MaMMograMs aren’t More accurate

detachment. Is this serious? — L.P.ANSWER: The vitreous is a thick, gel-like material that fills the back two-thirds of the eye. It provides support for the eye. The vitreous abuts on the retina, the sensitive layer of cells that transfers incoming images to the brain. A vitreous detachment means it has pulled away from the retina. In doing so, it stimulated the retina to cause the flashing lights you saw.The doctor made sure your retina was OK. Flashes of light also can be a signal that the retina is tearing. For the present, nothing else needs to be done. The doctor will examine you again in a few months to be positive the retina is remaining in good health.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters

AUGUST EVENTS (continued):much do we really know about Cy Young? Denton T. (Cy) Young pitched his first major league baseball game in August of 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders. He was the first to pitch a perfect game and was responsible for many other records, some of which still stand. Young has the most career wins (511) and the most innings pitched (7,355) during his 22-year pro ball career. The Cy Young Award, which honors the season’s best pitcher, was established in 1956, the year after his death. F During the first week of August every year, the community of Sturgis, South Dakota, population

6,400, hosts the Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. Begun in 1938 with nine bikers in a half-mile race, the event now draws hundreds of thousands of participants. Record-setting attendance was at the rally’s 60th anniversary in 2000, when more than 600,000 bikers cruised into Sturgis. In 1976, the average amount spent per person was $50. Today that figure tops $1,000. The community’s businesses earn 95 percent of their annual revenue during this one week, and the state’s coffers are filled with about $1 million in sales tax alone.F The United States’ first official census commenced on the first Monday in August of 1790.

Greg Biffle’s Got to Stay PositiveGreg Biffle is relieved to see things returning to normal at Roush Fenway Racing.Biffle, 41, has been competing

regularly at the Sprint Cup level for the Ford team founded by Jack Roush since 2003, winning 16 times and finishing second to Tony Stewart in the 2005 championship standings. Biffle also finished third, behind champion Jimmie Johnson and teammate Carl Edwards, in 2008.Normal, for Biffle, would involve making the Chase for a fourth straight year, but the Vancouver, Wash., native likely will have to win at least one of the final five regular-season races to do so.The reason for Biffle’s optimism is the fact that Edwards, the Cup point leader, has renewed his contract to remain at Roush Fenway. Edwards apparently seriously considered an offer from Joe Gibbs Racing before deciding to remain where he is. Like teammates Edwards, Matt Kenseth and David Ragan, Biffle has spent his entire career with Roush, winning a Truck Series championship in 2000 and the (now) Nationwide Series in 2002.“I think it’s great that he (Edwards) is coming

back to our company,” Biffle said. “I was a little skeptical, I suppose, whether he was going to, figuring this is August already.“I’m relieved because people won’t ask me about it anymore. That’s why I’m most relieved about it and to have him back as a teammate. He does a good job getting his car set up and helps. I think

we all help each other.”Roush recently changed Biffle’s crew chief, replacing Greg Erwin with Matt Puccia. Biffle, who won the August race at Pocono Raceway in 2010, managed an eighth-place finish this time, leaving him 13th in points.“Certainly we’ve been trying hard to win a race,” Biffle said. “We’ve come close a few times. …Michigan, Bristol, Atlanta are all great tracks for us, and we feel like we can win at basically any of

these racetracks.“I would have never guessed we’d be this far into the season without winning a race after the way we finished last year.”

WOODSTOCKIt was 41 years ago this month that Woodstock made the headlines as the

biggest rock festival of its time. Tidbits invites you to learn more about this musical gathering as we revisit the event.

= Its official title was “The Woodstock Music and Art Fair — an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music.” Dairy farmer Max Yasgur agreed to allow the festival to be held on his 600-acre farm near Bethel, New York, a community 43 miles southwest of Woodstock, New York. = The citizens of Bethel immediately protested the upcoming gathering, and promoters continually told town officials that there would be no more than 50,000 attendees. About 186,000 advance tickets were sold prior to the concert at a price of $18, about $105 in today’s money. Promoters were expecting 200,000 fans. = Three days before the festival was to begin, the organizers realized that the fences around the area would present a problem with the anticipated crowds and removed them. This resulted in the concert becoming free for thousands that streamed into the area. By the time the music was set to begin, there were 500,000 concert-goers.= The first band to sign a contract for the festival was Creedence Clearwater Revival for the sum of $10,000. = Rains in the days prior to the event produced muddy roads and fields. Massive traffic jams clogged roads unequipped for the volume of people. There were inadequate sanitation facilities and first-aid for the number of people and shortages of food and water. But nothing seemed to dampen the spirits of the fans as they listened to a total of 32 performances at the three-day event, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, the Grateful Dead and Joan Baez. Artists that may have

forever regretted declining the offer to perform included the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Doors and Led Zeppelin. = Three recorded deaths occurred during the Woodstock Festival, including a heroin overdose. Another concert-goer sleeping in a neighboring hayfield was killed when a tractor ran over him. A baby was born in a car stuck in the traffic jam, while another mother-to-be was airlifted by helicopter from the scene to a nearby hospital where she gave birth. = It was the organizers’ wish that the Festival be closed out with singing cowboy Roy Rogers crooning “Happy Trails,” but when approached by the executive producer, Rogers turned him down. Fans had to settle for Jimi Hendrix shutting it down on Monday morning. = When Max Yasgur was approached about a 1970 encore festival, the answer was no, in Yasgur’s words, “I’m going back to running a dairy farm.” He was sued by neighbors for property damage and incurred severe damage to his own farm. He was awarded a $50,000 settlement. The community of Bethel further prevented a second concert by passing “mass gathering” laws. Yasgur sold his farm in 1971 and died two years later at age 53. Rolling Stone magazine featured a full-page obituary, something that very few non-musicians have ever received. = The year after Woodstock, a documentary film chronicling the event was released, an effort that received the Academy Award for Best Documentary. The proceeds financed the settlements of the 80 lawsuits that were filed against the organizers, as well as their $1.4 million debt.

Fast rooF PatChingQUESTION: While organizing the attic, I noticed there was an area of the floor that looked like it had gotten wet recently. I looked at the roof above, but did not notice any holes. But there is a little water streak down the plywood. Is this a serious problem? — Carol H., New Bedford, Mass.ANSWER: If you address it quickly, it will not become a serious problem. Minor leaks in a roof can be patched fairly quickly. They’re often caused by damage to the shingles on top of the roof, which occurs over time due to debris strikes, ice buildup or just general stress from extremes of hot and cold.During the next rainstorm, go into the attic and note where the water is seeping. Follow the trail of water upward until you can see an entry point. That is the likely area of damage. Mark the spot clearly and brightly for now (put a piece of bright tape or tack a bright piece of paper over the spot). To repair, you’ll need to be able to access the rooftop safely, with safety harness, rope and ladder, and have a helper. If you’re not able to do this, contact a roofing professional to do the repair. If you can do it yourself, first re-mark the leaky area. From the attic, take a large (ten-penny) nail and drive it straight upward through the bottom layer so that it juts out past the shingles above. (Don’t sink it in all the way, as you’ll need to remove it later.)Gather your repair materials: spare shingles, roofing cement, roofing nails, hammer and pry bar. Make your way safely to the rooftop, with your helper minding the ladder and safety rope. Locate the upward-jutting nail.Remove the nail and patch the hole with a dab of roofing cement.Inspect the shingle for damage. If it is very minor, like a ripped edge or small crack, it can be patched with roofing cement and a piece of spare shingle cut to fit. Or, you can completely remove the shingle, sliding it out carefully from the ones above and to the side, and slide in a replacement. Tack down on the top and sides with dabs of roofing cement. Tap in roofing nails along the top of the replacement shingle, holding the shingle above it up, then press the shingle above it back down into place. Secure the bottom of the shingle with a couple small dabs of cement underneath the flap.HOME TIP: August is prime time for roofing repairs, as the hot and relatively dry days allow for plenty of work to be done and for roofing materials to set correctly.

THE TRAGIC CASE OF HIDEKI IRABIYou can probably point to one pitch — a 98-mph fastball — that came to ruin one man’s life.It was 1996, and a kid named Hideki Irabu of the Chiba Lotte Marines tossed that pitch past a stunned Kazuhiro Kiyohara of the Seibu Lions. At the time it was the fastest pitch in Japanese baseball history. With ERAs in the 2.50 region and multiple years with 200-plus strikeouts, and with players like Hideo Nomo, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Takashi Kashiwada — who signed across town for the New York Mets — George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees wanted to make a move. Hideki Irabu — “The Nolan Ryan of Japan” — was their man. This wasn’t the first time the Yankees played catch-up in race ball. The Brooklyn Dodgers broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947 with Jackie Robinson, the Yankees waited until 1955 before they activated Elston Howard. Howard was an incredible player, someone who survived the pressure of being the catcher who succeeded Yogi Berra. His number is retired with the Yankees, and he is forever enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.Hideki Irabu is no longer with us.

His story begins and ends as a sad one. His father was an unseen, never-spoken-of American serviceman who met his mother one night in Okinawa. In a culture that abhors any sort of disgrace, Irabu’s mother later married a Japanese man who instilled enough discipline in the boy to play and succeed wildly in baseball. With that fastball, American scouts took notice. The San Diego Padres bit first, purchasing his contract from Chiba Lotte. It was controversial at the time because up to that point, no American baseball team had directly intervened with Japanese baseball negotiations in such a manner. And in a culture that steadfastly adheres to an intricate code of manners, Irabu bucked the trend. He would only play for the Yankees. In March 1997, for the rights to just talk to the 27-year-old Irabu, the Yanks gave the Padres $3 million in cash, five mid-tier major leaguers and five minor-league prospects. By May, Irabu was in pinstripes, signed to a four-year contract worth $12.8 million and a signing bonus of $8.5 million.Irabu went on to win 34 games in his six-year Major League Baseball career. He endured insults from Steinbrenner (“fat toad”) and Yankee fans alike who couldn’t support a guy who only played in one postseason game but wore two championship rings.Alcohol played a bigger part in his life after the big leagues turned their back on him, and after a few arrests for intoxication and whatever presumed family problems he had, his wife left him.It was as if his life had come full circle. His solution was to hang himself last July.It has been said that there is no such thing as talent, there is only pressure. Pressure, over many years, makes a diamond. For Hideki, on and off the diamond, he just couldn’t make the time.

avon PlatesQ: I sold Avon products during the 1970s and have at least two dozen crystal and floral plates in the Cape Cod pattern. I would like to sell them. — June, Salem, Mo.A: Avon began as California Perfume Company in 1886. The first Avon items were introduced during the 1920s, but it wasn’t until 1939 that many of its collectible products were being marketed on a national basis. To market your plates, I recommend you contact the National Association of Avon Collectors, Inc., P.O. Box 7006, Kansas City, MO 64113. The club publishes an excellent newsletter, “Avon Times,” which might be helpful.

Type in the title of the book and its author, and a list will

appear of dealers throughout the country who are offering that particular book for sale and the price they are asking. There also are several excellent price guides, including “Official Price Guide to Books” by Marie Tedford and Pat Goudey, and “The Antique Trader Book Collectors Price Guide” by Richard Russell.

z It was the 37th president of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, who made the following sage — and somehow appropriate — observation: “Sure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too.”z Pasta has been around since 5,000 B.C., and it was invented in China, not Italy.z If you’re planning a visit to the United Kingdom, you might want to keep in mind this rather obscure statute: It’s illegal to stand within 100 yards of the reigning monarch if you don’t have socks on.z A groundhog can move 700 pounds of dirt in a single day.z When the two-and-one-half-hour finale of the groundbreaking television show “M*A*S*H” aired on Feb. 28, 1983, advertisers paid a hefty $450,000 for a single 30-second spot. That was $50,000 more than the same spot cost at the Super Bowl that year.

z We all know what a disaster is, but did you know where the word came from? The base of the word is “aster,” which is Latin for “star.” The word “disaster” originally meant “an unfavorable aspect of a star,” reflecting the ancient notion that the motions of heavenly bodies affected terrestrial events.z Baseball players didn’t have numbers on their uniforms until 1929, and it was the New York Yankees that were the first to adopt the practice.z In the early 18th century, newspapers were not cheap, but the stories published therein were often people’s only link to the events of the day. Since they were so coveted, newspapers were often brought as a gift when a gentleman was calling on a lady friend, much as candy or flowers might be brought in a different era.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

A recent Barna Update (Barna.com) indicated that a startling piece of our Christian belief system is missing in the minds of many who claim the name of Jesus. While they believe in Jesus as God, only 42% of the Christians contacted believed that Satan exists.

To not believe that Satan is alive and active today is to deny the authority of the Word. That thinking brings into question what the Bible says about Jesus and what He believed. In Luke 8:26-39, Jesus confronts a demon-possessed man on the Gentile area along the coast of the Sea of Galilee, an area known as the Gerasenes.

This man had been literally driven crazy by a “legion” of demons that had entered into his body and driven him uncontrollable. Jesus knows what is happening. Scripture says, “For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man…” Why would Jesus do that if He did not believe that Satan and his army of demons were real? On several other occasions during His three years of earthly ministry, He called out demons from those suffering under their disastrous oppression. We see Him dialogue with Satan at the end of

His forty day fast in the desert. (Matt. 4) That makes no sense if Satan and the demons were not real.

To not believe as Jesus did in this matter puts Christians in a precarious position concerning the Word. I have confronted a few people over the years clearly under the influence of Satan. In the name of Jesus and by His shed blood on the Cross I was able to call out these demons. This is possible only because Satan is no match for Jesus Christ or those who are true Believers. See I John 4:4.

For only 42% of the Christians interviewed to believe that the fallen angel, Satan, is real boggles my mind. Not only does this thinking cast a shadow on their belief system, it weakens the transforming power of the church today. Since Jesus believed that the devil was real, how can we not do the same?

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14: 12 NIV

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Good card-reading is an art unto itself. Declarer does not actually see the defenders’ hands as each card is played, but many times he can visualize their holdings just as if they were in open view.Take this case where South was not sufficiently alert to a situation he could have deduced without much effort. He ducked the spade lead, East winning with the queen and returning a spade to dummy’s ace.Declarer could count eight sure tricks and saw that the ninth might come from a finesse in either diamonds or hearts. He stewed mightily while deciding which one to take and finally settled on the diamond finesse. West won with the king and cashed his spades, and South went down one.The simple fact is that declarer’s cogitations were basically misplaced. Rather than trying to decide which finesse to take at trick three, he should have expended the bulk of his energy on determining the meaning of West’s opening lead.West’s five-of-spades lead was highly revealing. It was inconceivable that he would have led the five from a holding of, say, the K-Q-J-5-4, in which case he would have led the king. Declarer could therefore assume that East had the king, queen or jack, which in turn meant that the ace was the right play from dummy at trick one.Observe what happens in the actual case if declarer takes the first spade with the ace. Whatever East plays on the trick, the defenders cannot cash four spade tricks after declarer takes a losing diamond finesse at trick two. If West leads a spade to East’s queen, East has no spade to return, while if West cashes the K-J of spades, South’s ten becomes a stopper. If it turns out that East’s original holding is three spades headed by an honor, which certainly is possible, there’s still nothing to fear. In that case, West started with only four spades, and nine tricks are assured.
