SeniorNews LineRemember the Termites? No, it wasn’t a ‘50s band. The Termites were the 1,500 high IQ children in a study begun by Dr. Lewis Terman back in 1921. Studies of that group of people have continued to provide a wealth of information for scientists over the years. The latest project, a 20-year effort described in a book called “The Longevity Project” by Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin, refutes a number of so-called truths we’ve come to believe about living long lives. Here are a few of the myths debunked in this study.Myth: Athletic people live longer. The finding: The key is to be active when you’re middle aged, but not necessarily engaged in strenuous exercise. The longevity benefit came from finding an enjoyable physical activity and staying with it.Myth: Those with more education live longer. The finding: Not necessarily so. More important than higher degrees was to be productive in whatever career was chosen and to push through challenges.Myth: Those who worry too much shorten their life span. The finding: Being conscientious, organized and detail-oriented led to longer lives, likely because people who have

those characteristics are more likely to protect their health and live a more sensible, balanced life.Myth: Relaxed people live longer. The finding: Increased responsibility and challenges brought longer life. Those who were ambitious and motivated lived longer. Translation: don’t retire too early.Myth: Married people live longer. The finding: Men who stayed married lived long lives, as did married or divorced women. Divorced men fared the worst.Dr. Friedman has a Secrets of Longevity blog online at the Psychology Today website. Go online to www.psychologytoday.com and put “Secrets of Longevity” in the search box.

Foot Locker shoes and clothing at 20 percent off for you and the family, shop Target online and get 10 percent off every day, or Dell computers up to 30 percent off — and much, much more — including travel and vacations. Look for discounts from Amtrak, Greyhound, car rental companies, cruise lines, Disney, sporting events and Club Med…go to the site and see all it has to offer. The $60 annual membership fee might be the best discount card you’ve ever had.Another way to find your ideal vacation spot is to get online and put your dream vacation in a search browser. I searched for “veterans vacation mountain cabin” and found beautiful cabins in the North Carolina mountains. Stay three days, get one free. I changed the search to “fishing” and found a place in Big Bear, Calif., that’s so peaceful, I’m ready to go there now. Stay three days, the second two days are 50 percent off.Check your calendar and make plans, the earlier the better for more availability.

SCOOTING AROUND (continued):Salisbury Motor Glide. Built in Pomona, California, it was fully equipped with a horn, lights and collapsible handlebars. The 1938 models had the first automatic transmissions. From 1947–1950, Salisbury sold the very popular model 85 Super Scooter, believed to be the world’s first maxi scooter. The sleek model could reach 50 miles per hour (80.5 kph) and is a sought after collectible today. ➧ During and shortly after World War II, the Cushman Scooter Company was the main manufacturer of scooters, and they were producing about 300 scooters a day. In the post-war world, scooters were very popular because they were economical. Japan, France and Italy started making their own models.➧ The U.S. Department of Transportation definition for a scooter is a motorcycle that has “a platform for the operator’s feet or has integrated footrests,” and has a “step-through architecture.” ➧ Scooter owners and admirers sometimes refer to scooters as “putt-putts!” In countries where cars and gas are very expensive and in cities where parking is a problem, scooters are all over the place.➧ Problems with scooters in the early years discouraged some buyers: They had loud two-stroke engines, they were known to have parts fall off, and they didn’t last very long. In spite of these problems, the companies did a good job selling them with advertising that made them look like must-haves for “cool” people. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fell in love while riding a Vespa in the movie “Roman Holiday.” Scooters were romanticized as much as

messiness, and its parts were better protected from the elements. These machines were seen as more durable and desirable. By 1960, Vespas were being manufactured in Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Spain and still in Italy as well.➧ Another early scooter in Europe that came about after the Vespa was the Lambretta. It was built by plumber Ferdinando Innocenti with its frame made out of pipes. He wanted to build a more affordable scooter. The name Lambretta came from the Lambro River, which was the site of the factory, near Milan, Italy. ➧ The Rabbit and the Pigeon were two of the first scooters built in Japan, by Fuji and Mitsubishi, respectively. These filled a need for cheap

saViNg MoNey iN 2011With a little effort, small savings can add up to big money in the space of a year. Here are a few steps to take in 2011.If you’ve filed your taxes and expect a big refund, consider that you’ve just made an interest-free loan to the government. They’ve had use of your money when you could have used it yourself. Take a look at your tax withholding, do the math and make adjustments to bring you as close as possible to the amount you’ll actually owe. If you’re getting a raise this year, put at least half of the increase in savings or toward debt, especially credit cards. Pay down the account with the highest interest rate first. (But don’t cancel the card, as it’s part of your credit profile.) Commit to making one extra mortgage payment per year or sending an additional amount each month. Enclose a note asking that it be applied to your principal. Use an online calculator to see just how many years and dollars you can shave off your mortgage.Comparison shop before you buy big items, especially electronics and appliances. Check the Sunday sales flyers in the paper and look online at sites like Pricegrabber.com to compare prices. Print out what you find online and take it to your local store: Chances are they’ll meet or beat the other price.Consider whether you’re due for an adjustment in your property taxes. Ask the local tax assessor for a reappraisal if you’ve been in your home for more than three years; it may be worth less than it was, in which case you’re paying too much.Look for new home or vehicle insurance and consider raising your deductible. While a higher deductible will mean that you’ll have to come up with more cash should you ever have a claim, you’ll be making smaller monthly payments on the policy. Ask about combining home and auto with one company. It’s possible you’ll get an additional discount.Shop around for a new bank if yours charges ATM fees, has a monthly service charge for checking accounts or requires you to keep a minimum balance. Call credit unions or savings banks in your area, or check Bankrate.com to find local banks.

horse-drawn carriages.➧ Vespa is the brand name for scooters built by the Piaggio Company in Italy whose production started in 1946. They produced 2,484 Vespas in their first year; the second year production jumped to 10,535, and almost 50 years later, in 1994, Piaggio built over 10 million of the fun machines. So, where did they get the name? Vespas make a buzzing sound like a wasp — the Italian word for wasp is “vespa.” Many people tend to call all scooters Vespas.➧ The Piaggio Company was one of several former military aircraft companies that started producing scooters after World War II. Its Vespa was ahead of its time with many new features. It had easy-to-change tires, a hidden engine that cut down on noise and

Pet Pointers by Dr. KirK Dixon

So your pet is fat, how did it happen? There is only one way for any of us to be fat, we eat more than we should. The good part with pets is they don’t physically control the food dish. They can’t buy the food at the store and they can’t fill their dish, so weight loss should be easy, right? WRONG. The problem is obese pets are master manipulators of their owners. Whether they verbally harass you (barking, howling, meowing), physically harass you by biting your toes, or mentally harass you with “THE LOOK” they are sadly in control of you and the situation. The first thing to know is your pet isn’t going to starve to death if they eat less. Never feed what the manufacturer recommends, it is always too much. I find 1/2 to 2/3 the recommended amount is usually sufficient. The first thing is you

need to know exactly what amount your pet is eating, then cut it in half. Divide the food into 3 or 4 smaller meals so they won’t be as hungry. Weigh them every two weeks and record the progress. If they aren’t losing weight, cut the food back more. We have prescription diets that are 40% of the calories of regular food. We have prescription medicine that suppresses appetite. These are helpful but not necessary if you can use self discipline. For treats use raw green vegetables. There are almost no calories in green vegetables if you don’t sauce them up. If they like the vegetables it is great. If they refuse them you know they aren’t that hungry, they are just holding out for the good fattening stuff. Be strong, you can do it and your pet will benefit greatly.

How to HelP your Pet lose weigHt

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write about migraine headaches. My granddaughter, age 22, suffers from them. She is a college student and also works. What causes these headaches? — E.F.ANSWER: Migraines start out as one-sided throbbing headaches that can last 24 or more hours. As time passes, the entire head might hurt. Along with the pulsating pain, nausea often strikes, and sometimes people have to vomit. Migraine sufferers are sensitive to light and sound, so they seek a quiet, dark room where they can lie down. The cause of these headaches is controversial. A popular theory is that a wave of slow electrical activity spreads over the brain and inflames its coverings, which produces the pain. The above “cause” of migraines, I am sure, is not what you wanted. You want to know what brings them on. Triggers for migraine include too little or too much sleep, skipping meals, strong odors, bright lights and loud music. Women often find that menstrual periods will usher in the headaches. Stress, both physical and emotional, can start them. Foods that often serve to initiate a migraine are chocolate, cheeses, fatty foods, sausage, salami, oranges, tomatoes, onions, red wine, peanuts and hot dogs.In the past 20 years, triptans have brought a marked change in the treatment of migraines. Sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), almotriptan (Axert), rizatriptan (Maxalt), frovatriptan (Frova) and naratriptan (Amerge) can control severe migraines and are available as pills, nasal sprays and self-administered injections. For less-intense pain, aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen

and naproxen are sufficient. When migraines recur with disrupting regularity, preventive medicines have a place in treatment. They include propranolol (Inderal) and verapamil. The booklet on headaches deals with the common varieties, including migraines. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My biggest health problem, if you can call it a health problem, is getting to sleep at night. I lie in bed for what seems an eternity before I fall asleep. A friend told me she had the same problem and cured it with melatonin. I’d like to try it if it’s safe. Is it? I am 76 years old and would like a few years of good sleep. — T.R.ANSWER: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, a small gland attached to the brain. It conditions the body to adapt to day-night cycles. Melatonin secretion is 10 times greater at night, with peak secretion occurring between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.Evidence suggests that this hormone shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and lengthens the time spent in uninterrupted sleep. Melatonin production wanes with age, and its lack could explain your sleep problems. It also has been used for shift workers to get their brains and bodies conditioned to new sleep-wake cycles, and travelers sometimes take it to prevent jet lag.Melatonin isn’t sold as a drug, so it’s not closely supervised. Serious side effects haven’t been reported. A safe starting dose is 0.2 mg to 0.3 mg.

The question of whether or not to draw trumps immediately has no pat answer. The solution depends entirely on what declarer needs to do to eliminate his excess losers. In general, if declarer has enough tricks in the side suits to assure his contract, trumps should be drawn at once. But if declarer plans to trump his losers, or if tackling trumps will give the defense a leg up in the timing, it may be best to delay drawing them. Today’s hand illustrates the type of thinking that goes into determining declarer’s best course of action. South is in four hearts, and West leads a spade, taken by South with the ace. How should he proceed? In the great majority of hands where declarer is missing the A-K of trumps, his first step should be to eliminate the opposing trumps as quickly as possible. But that would be suicidal in the actual case. If South leads a trump at trick two, he is virtually certain to lose four tricks and go down one.Let’s say East takes the first heart with the king. He returns a second spade, establishing a spade trick for the defense. No matter how declarer continues from here, he must lose two trumps, a diamond and a spade.South’s only real hope is to somehow avoid the spade loser. To do this, he must immediately establish an extra diamond trick in dummy. Accordingly, he leads the queen of diamonds at trick two.West does best to duck the first diamond, but he is fighting a losing battle. After taking the second diamond with the ace, he returns a spade to declarer’s king, but South is now in full control. He leads the jack of clubs to dummy’s queen and deposits his losing spade on the king of diamonds. Trumps can then be drawn in comfort, and South finishes with 10 tricks.

A nice 1960 model is on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio. ➧ By the late 1960s and early 1970s, scooter popularity faded in America. Today, for example, the population in Taiwan exceeds 23 million. There are more than 11 million registered motor scooters in that country alone, with Kymco motor scooters probably the most popular. ➧ A small company that came along with its first

LITTLE RED WAGONSLittle red wagons have been a favorite toy for girls and boys for many years.

The first were wooden, then metal, and now many are plastic. They continue to amuse the smallest tots and the adults who pull them for rides!

F The original red wagons were built and sold directly to stores by Antonio Pasin, an Italian immigrant who came to America (Chicago) as a 16-year-old cabinet maker in the early 1900s. Pasin had a hard time finding work but managed to take enough odd jobs to save money for a workshop by 1917. In that workshop he built wagons at night and sold them directly to stores himself. By 1923, he had several employees and named his company the Liberty Coaster Company, after the Statue of Liberty. F By 1930, during the Great Depression, parents everywhere wanted little red wagons for their children, and Pasin’s company was the largest producer of the toys. It was in 1930 that the name of the company was changed to Radio Steel & Manufacturing Company. The name of the company’s wagon was changed to Radio Flyer because Pasin was fascinated with the invention of the radio by a fellow Italian and also interested in flying.F Chicago hosted the 1933 World’s Fair, and Pasin’s company was asked to participate in the celebration. This provided a huge boost to the popularity of the “little red wagons.” A 45-foot-tall (13.7 m) “Coaster Boy” standing in the front of a large wagon was the most popular exhibit, and miniatures were sold for 25 cents. If you happen to come across one of these historic collectibles, it is probably worth more than a quarter now!F Antonio Pasin died in 1990 after many years of wagon making. He was the 44th toy innovator inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2003. His

grandsons Robert and Paul run the company now.F In 1992, a film titled, “Radio Flyer” used the fun red wagon to show how wagons have “powered the imagination” of children everywhere. F In 1997, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the company, Radio Flyer put the “World’s Largest Wagon™” on display at its headquarters in Chicago. It is

27 feet long (8.2 m), 13 feet wide (4 m) and weighs 15,000 pounds (6,804 kg). F Another larger-than-life wagon that bears the Radio Flyer name is at Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington. It was created for the Centennial Celebration of Children by the Junior League of Spokane in 1990. A great addition to the park, the handle of the wagon is a slide, big enough for adults! Dedicated to

children, it is “a reflection of the past, created in the present, to last into the future.”F The Radio Flyer brand is a top brand for toys 97 years after its founder started the company. The company still makes little red wagons and a lot more. They are the No. 1 maker of toy wagons and tricycles today. With some operations in China, Radio Flyer is still headquartered in Chicago. The employees are called “Flyers,” and new employees receive a “welcome wagon” when hired — a wagon of their own to enjoy! F Whether you are a grandparent, child or parent, we at Tidbits hope you enjoy the simple pleasures of life, including little red wagons.

scooter in 1954 was Honda — not so small today. Honda’s scooter history in Japan has been progressing since then, but they didn’t enter the North American market until 1983. Honda has marketed numerous scooter models, from two-strokes to the more environmentally friendly four-stroke models. ➧ Honda’s most popular scooter in North America is called the Metropolitan in the United States and the Jazz in Canada. The same scooter model is known as the Crea and Scoopy overseas. Cool names for cool little scooters, wherever you ride! ➧ The last decade has been a good one for Hondas, Vespas and many other brands of scooters in the

United States. Thanks to higher gas prices, scooter sales have been brisk. The best year yet for Honda’s small scooters was 2008. Every dealership in the United States sold out by the middle of the summer. In 2009, Honda ramped up production and ended up with too many, but those had sold too by 2010. ➧ You can’t haul children to soccer and baseball practice or drive the family on a cross-country vacation, but commuting to work on a scooter may become the norm, even in prosperous North America in the coming years. Will we become more “scooter-driven” like Paris, Milan, Tokyo and Beijing in our new economy?

Where Did All the Fans Go?BRISTOL, Tenn. — When I first began writing about NASCAR, the track in North Wilkesboro had 60,000 seats. Then Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre carved it up as if they were

diplomats playing Monopoly with conquered land, and the capacity was revealed to be 37,000. Same when International Speedway Corporation got its hands on Martinsville and alleged attendance dropped by a third even though the grandstands remained the same.Old newsreels of Darlington in the 1960s claim 80,000 fans. Now the track has three times as many seats and draws 20,000 fewer fans. I know people have gotten larger, myself notably included, but not that much.Forgive me if I don’t take what NASCAR types tell me at face value.Bristol once allowed as how it had a six-year waiting list for tickets. Fontana blamed the Academy Awards for falling attendance. NASCAR itself claims it’s going to put carburetor restrictor plates on engines that don’t have carburetors next year.Nineteen years in Wonderland, a few with Alice sitting next to me in the press box, have left me just a tad cynical where the Greater NASCAR Chamber of Commerce is concerned. Before I feel inclined to dwell not on “the people who weren’t there” at Bristol Motor Speedway but the “120,000 who were,” I’d have to believe in the existence of 120,000, which I don’t. I could argue successfully to a jury the wisdom of not believing a word I hear, but I’m not inclined to do so in part because journalism is more difficult when it dwells on what isn’t instead of what is. To do so would be to adapt NASCAR’s business practices to my own.

A lot of the people who weren’t in the grandstands also weren’t in the campgrounds surrounding the track. Some of that is surely attributable to the economy, the price of gas and everything it affects (which is…everything), the uncertainty of the world political situation, flooding in New Zealand and catastrophe in Japan. But I doubt 50,000 race fans spent Sunday collecting foodstuffs for disaster relief. The more I think about it, the more I believe that one factor is the aging fan base. The more I think about it, the more I believe that the people missing from the grandstands were the people missing from the campgrounds.

The crowd isn’t as rowdy because it isn’t as young. A man gets up in his 50s and he isn’t inclined to rough it as much. Where five years ago, he (and, yes, she) stumbled around for three days and three nights, eschewing shirts and showers in favor of booze and carousing, nowadays the mantra is “let’s not and say we did.” That couch feels a lot better on race days than the cold, hard ground and navigating the bonfires from inside a fishbowl.Six or seven years ago, NASCAR claimed most of its fans were God-fearing, gun-toting, Rhodes scholars

with family values, a successful practice and a six-figure income. There were 75 million of them watching on TV, even though only a couple dozen such people actually existed.Meanwhile, the empty seats aren’t buying hot dogs, not even the ones at Martinsville.

W The first account of Theodor (Ted) signing his writing as “Seuss” was while he was a student at Dartmouth College. He was editor-in-chief for the campus humor magazine, Jack-O-Lantern until the editor job was taken away because of a drinking party he and some friends held on campus. This was not only against school policy but against prohibition laws at the time. After losing his editor position, he continued to write for the magazine signing his articles as “Seuss.” Geisel was quite the mischievous character, which can be easily deduced by the nature of his books.W Geisel attended Oxford University in England after graduating from Dartmouth, mainly to please his father who wanted him to become a college professor. Academics bored him so he decided to tour Europe instead of attending classes. While touring, he met Helen Palmer who became his first wife. She was a children’s author and editor and encouraged his creative genius. W When Geisel returned to the United States with Helen, he pursued a career as a cartoonist. Some of his early work was published by The Saturday Evening Post and other publications. To make ends meet, the bulk of his early working years was spent creating advertising campaigns for Standard Oil, which he did for more than 15 years. W Geisel’s “big break” into children’s literature came after Viking Press contracted with him to illustrate a collection of children’s sayings in a book titled “Boners.”W The first book that Geisel published with his original writing and illustrations was “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.” His persistence played a big role in his success. The

book was rejected 27 times before Vanguard Press accepted it for publication. W After that book, he became known and loved as Dr. Seuss and went on to publish many more children’s books. There have also been animated movies, television specials and even Broadway musicals of his work. W One of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books came along as a result of educators’ dislike of boring early reading primers. “The Cat

in the Hat” was published in a joint venture between Houghton Mifflin and Random House when Dr. Seuss was asked to write and illustrate a book that would be interesting to children and use only words from a “new reader” word list. The book delighted everyone. W By the way, Dr. Seuss would frequently wear a hat from his interesting collection while he was working — He called them his “thinking caps.” W Dr. Seuss’ books have been translated into more than 15 languages, and over 200 million copies are scattered in homes all over the

globe. He won many awards for his work, while living and after his death. In May 2002, the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden was unveiled in Springfield, Massachusetts. His step-daughter, Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, was the sculptor for the fun bronze artwork of Dr. Seuss and his most famous characters.W Dr. Seuss’ first wife, Helen, died in 1967, and he married Audrey, who also encouraged him in his work. He died on September 24, 1991, but generations of children still laugh and rhyme their way through the wonderful books of Dr. Seuss.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: THEODOR SEUSS GEISELBorn in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Theodor Seuss Geisel credited

his mother with his ability and desire to create rhymes. Better known as Dr. Seuss, he rhymed his way into hearts all over the world.

squeaks aNd cReaksQUESTION: The wooden staircase in my house has a couple of stairs that squeak loudly when anyone walks on them. They feel pretty solid. Is there a way to stop the noise? — Jim in Toledo, OhioANSWER: As your house and its components age and settle, it’s not unusual for a few squeaks and creaks to be heard in the floorboards or on the stairs, among other things. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to put up with them. Squeaks in stairs are caused by the tread (the part that your foot steps on) rubbing against one of the risers (the vertical board between each step) or the stringer (the angled, notched board on which the stairs are built). Settling of the house, or expansion and contraction of the wood due to temperature and humidity fluctuations — all of which are normal — can cause a tiny misalignment of the stair’s treads and risers, noticeable when pressure is placed on the misaligned board (e.g., you step on it).Correcting the squeak is not too difficult, especially if you can access the underside of the stairs. You’ll need a hammer and small finishing nails, wood glue and several thin wooden shims or wedges (available at home-improvement stores). You also might need a drill and wood filler.Have a helper walk up and down the stairs while you pinpoint the problem areas from underneath. After marking the squeaky stairs, spread a little wood glue on the top of a shim or wedge. Gently hammer the wedge into the space where the stair tread and the supporting riser meet. Add more wedges, equally spaced, if necessary to even it out. Also, place a wedge between the riser and the stringer, and between the tread and the stringer. Have your helper test the tread from above. If the finishing nails are short enough that they won’t poke through the top of the tread or riser, carefully nail the shims into place. What if you can’t access the underside of the stairs? From the top side, locate the squeaky stairs and try to pinpoint exactly where the squeak is occurring. If the squeak is near the back of the tread, drill a pilot hole at an angle through the back of the stair tread toward the riser, then carefully hammer a finishing nail into the pilot hole all the way into the riser. Countersink the nail and fill the hole with wood filler that’s the same color as the tread. Move to the side of the tread and repeat, drilling a pilot hole toward the stringer beneath the tread and hammering a finishing nail through.HOME TIP: Got a squeaky floorboard? For a temporary fix, squeeze a bit of graphite powder between the joints underneath the floor to lubricate the space.

BEHOLD, THE POWER OF FLAxSEED OIL

After strapping my kid into the rear-facing baby seat and carefully avoiding red lipstick while still managing to complete some semblance of a kiss to my wife, it is clear to all involved in this scene of domesticity that I have uncanny powers. Behold! As I hoist my wife’s red Prius into the air. Witness! As I foist it into the street, right into the driver’s lane, with little evidence of strain. Such is my power.Thank you, flaxseed oil! Now, I know what you’re thinking…“flaxseed oil? Isn’t that a rich source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids?” Well, yes…but it’s also so much more. It can, as far as I can tell, turn a Roger Maris into a Barry Bonds. That’s only an anecdotal observation, however. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies suggest that flaxseed oil and other omega-3 fatty acids may be helpful in treating a variety of conditions. These conditions include high cholesterol, heart disease and Sjogren’s syndrome (an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks glands in the

body that produce moisture, like salivary and tear glands.)Actually, the University of Maryland goes to great lengths to distance itself from the flaxseed and does not imply any endorsement or recommendation of what many top-flight baseball players and I consider to be nothing short of a miracle drug. Their analysis is peppered with phrases like “[whether] flaxseed oil as a supplement can help lower cholesterol is up for debate. Some small studies show it may, but at least one double-blind study found no evidence that it lowered cholesterol.”But what do they know? The Terps didn’t even make the NIT this year.If only they knew the power of flaxseed oil and how, when combined with arthritis cream, it could change the world. Well…at least the record books. This heady concoction can, as baseball fans have witnessed, make your head swell, and not just because of the secondary ego-stroking effects it may have on you. In these, admittedly, non-clinical trials, baseball players have observed, flaxseed and arthritis cream can cause your head to grow several batting-helmet sizes. But who needs clinical trials when you can have your very own congressional trial? Maybe all of those home runs flying off of Barry Bonds’ bat weren’t derived from a diet rich in essential fatty acids that flaxseed may (or may not) provide to the average person’s balanced meal. Maybe flaxseed oil isn’t my power source when I’m haplessly flinging hybrid cars to and fro. Maybe it was the Chinese herbs my chiropractor gave me last week, or maybe it was that needle-tipped syringe someone stabbed me with before the recent home and away. It’ll take an act of congress to find out, apparently.

Can you tell me what to expect from my favorite network of the Big Four (that being NBC)? — Fred F., Lansing, Mich.A: NBC recently announced it does indeed have new programming planned for the summer. “America’s Got Talent” returns on Tuesday, May 31. Howie Mandel, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan all will be back as judges, with Nick Cannon again hosting. “The Marriage Ref” returns on Sunday, June 26, while “Law and Order: Los Angeles” continues with new episodes on Mondays. Speaking of “Law and Order,” “Criminal Intent” begins its final season May 30. Also, the final season of “Friday Night Lights” continues well into the summer. New shows include a vocal talent show called “The Voice,” the game show “Still Standing” and an adventure-dating series called “Love in the Wild” — all premiere in June.

character on the show, Lt. Van Buren, had cancer. S. Epatha has said she had a wonderful 16 years on the show, but it was time for her to move on. She recently wrapped filming on the movie “We the Peeples” with Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson.

z It was American educator Laurence J. Peter who made the following sage observation: “An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn’t happen today.” Incidentally, he also came up with what’s known as the Peter Principle: “In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence.”z Ever wonder why it’s called the silver screen? In the early days of the cinema industry, the projection screens were embedded with real silver to enhance the reflective nature of the surface. z Greyhounds have better eyesight than any other breed of dog.z A legislator in the Louisiana State House of Representatives once introduced a bill that would make it illegal to charge a bald man more than 25 cents for a haircut.

z Worried about grocery prices going up? How’s this for a pricey egg: In 2007, a Faberge egg was sold at auction for nearly $16.5 million. Good thing the ones used in your omelets aren’t encrusted with jewels. z Those who study such things say that Americans drink more carbonated beverages every year than coffee, tea, sports drinks and juice combined.z The plant formally known as titan arum produces the largest cluster of flowers in the world, sometimes reaching more than 10 feet in height. What’s perhaps even more notable, though, is its odor: The plant gives off a strong smell that is most often compared to that of a decomposing animal. Hence the plant’s more common name, the corpse flower.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

A swine is an extremely homely pig-like, old world creature, which was hard to please. The dogs were street dogs. They were unpredictable, scrawny, wild animals at best. Dogs and swine were considered unclean and therefore, Jesus, after telling us not to share the word with dogs, continues to include swine as well.

Just as you would not put food out for these creatures on your best china, you would be wise not to trust the gospel with people like them either. Have you ever shared your faith with a stranger? If the hearer turned on you raving against the Lord, then you may have experienced this situation that Jesus shares with us in this passage.

Too often our zeal for the Lord pushes us into enemy territory for which we are not prepared. Jesus advised leaving situations like this (Matthew 7:6) and Paul did leave similar situations, therefore, we need to proceed cautiously while intently listening to the Lord

as Paul did in Acts 18:9. In a vision, the Lord spoke, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you…” When the Lord says speak, we are to speak.

The key is listening to the Lord when you are being threatened. If they refuse to hear, leave and pray that the Lord will open the next door. The old expression, “fools rush in where angels fear to tread,” comes to mind here. If you are ready to deal with the devil, rebuke him and he will flee (James 4:7). But if the message you deliver is rebuffed, don’t be embarrassed for leaving and shaking the dust from your feet (Luke 10:10).

“So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city… Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.” Luke 4:28-30

Just maybe we should allow the real life of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

“No Regrets: The Life of Edith Piaf”by Carolyn Burke(Knopf, $27.95)

Reviewed by Larry CoxEdith Giovanna Gassion was born in Paris in 1915. She was abandoned by her mother, and when her father, an acrobat, joined the French army in 1916, he took his infant daughter to live with her grandmother, who operated a brothel in Normandy. When Edith was blinded by meningitis when she was 3, the prostitutes in the brothel pooled their money so she could go on a pilgrimage honoring Sainte Therese de Lisieux. She eventually recovered her vision when she was 7.After the war, Edith rejoined her father as a street entertainer, and together they toured France. Her father encouraged her to sing, and when Edith was 14 she began performing as a street singer. In 1935, at age 20, her life changed dramatically when she was discovered by Louis Leplee, an important nightclub owner who soon became her manager. Leplee provided Edith with a new stage name, La Mome Piaf, which roughly translates to “The Little Sparrow.” The nickname would stay with her for the rest of her life.In this fascinating new biography, author Carolyn Burkes recounts the often turbulent life of this incredible entertainer. Although Piaf became both a cultural icon and perhaps France’s greatest popular singer, it was never an easy transition. Her fame seemed counterbalanced by self-doubt, love affairs that unraveled, addictions, fragile health and even a murder charge.Although much has been written about Piaf, “No Regrets” reveals fresh details and helps explain how Piaf ’s courage, art and universal appeal helped establish her not only as a symbol of France, but more importantly, as a source of inspiration for entertainers throughout the world. When Piaf died of liver cancer at age 47, she was denied a funeral mass by the Catholic Church. But that didn’t stop the fans who adored her. Her burial ceremony at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris was attended by more than 100,000 mourners.

aPPLe coMPuteRQ: I recently heard on CNN that an old computer had been sold for a great deal of money. I have an Apple II, which was made between 1982 and 1988, in perfect condition, with printer and several software discs. How much is it worth? — P.G., Albuquerque, N.M.A: I monitored eBay for about two weeks and think your computer is probably worth in the $200 to $350 range. Typical was an Apple II with several hundred discs, original documents in binder, joystick and “tons of extras.” There were 19 bids, the highest $215. I also found an Apple II with “extras” and in original box for $150.

* * *Q: Recently my mother died at the age of 96. She had a lovely home, decorated beautifully with Early American decor. I am considering disposing of many of these items at a garage sale, but I do not want to sell something for 50 cents that is worth $50. How do I find someone who can provide me with values that I can trust? — Christie, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: You should hire a certified appraiser who has expertise in determining the values of both household and estate items. Use the business pages of the phone book to find appraisers in your region. Call several to find one that you feel comfortable with. Don’t be hesitant to ask for references, and expect to pay a fee for his or her help. There are generally two types of appraisals, written and verbal. A written appraisal is often itemized and costs a little more than a verbal assessment. When I liquidated my mother’s estate several years ago, my sister and I avoided the stress of garage sales by making donations to local charities.

* * *Q: I have a large collection of records from the 1940s to the mid-1970s. Do they have any value? — Barry, Brooklyn, N.Y.A: You need to invest in a good price guide. Three I especially like, all by Tim Neely, are the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 (Krause, $34.99); Goldmine Record Album Price Guide (Krause, $24.99); and Goldmine Price Guide to 45 RPM Records (Krause, $24.99).
