PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome to spring and the wonderful sunny days that we have experienced of late. With the weather varying greatly in the past few weeks, students are strongly encouraged to bring a labelled jumper and/or coat to school.

Debating success Congratulations go to Emelia, Jolie, Rachel and Saho on winning their debate against the Ben Venue Public School team last Friday. The girls debated whether students in Years 5 and 6 should prepare dinner for their families at least once a week. The team will be competing against the Glen Innes Public School in the next round.

Stage 3 mini carnival Though the pandemic has prevented us from holding our annual athletics carnival, students in Stage 3 participated in a mini athletics carnival on Monday. A great deal of fun was had as children ran in races and participated in activities loosely linked to athletics field events, such as limbo and frisbee.

Mathematics survey As part of our preparation for the new Strategic Improvement Plan, students and staff are being surveyed on the topic of mathematics. The information gained from these surveys will help us identify what is working and areas for further development and support into the future.

School Council nominations Parents are invited to nominate for the vacant position on School Council. Please submit nominations to the Executive Officer (Principal) by this Friday, 4 September. If more than one nomination is received, an election will be held.

COVID-19 update Our thanks go to families for their assistance in abiding by the requirement to provide a copy of negative COVID test results prior to the return of students who have been displaying symptoms.

All people entering the school are required to complete the External Visitors form each time they enter the school. This paperwork will be helpful with contact tracing in the event that there is an outbreak of COVID-19.

We wish all fathers and father figures a very happy Father’s Day this Sunday.

Take care,

Ms Deborah Nay Principal

Applications for non-local placements are welcome, but are not a guarantee of acceptance. Our enrolment committee will meet in a few weeks to determine acceptance of placement and parents will be notified in the last week of this term.

1/2D CLASS NEWS Our class motto in Year 1/2 D is Together We Can! We acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and cooperative skills of each member of our team through written appreciations shared in weekly community circle time. As part of our creative arts program this term we researched the culture of the Torres Strait Islander people through songs and dance. The boys went out hunting to gather feathers to make their traditional Dhari headdresses, whilst the girls went collecting local flowers to design their beautiful head leis. Adorning their traditional costumes, the children confidently performed the song Taba Naba to a small appreciative audience and shared information about their costumes and the translation of the song into English.

In history lessons we have stepped back in time and explored using ink nib pens and inkwells to complete writing samples as part of our investigations into changes in school rooms over time. The children have completely immersed themselves into the etiquette expectations of students in the 1930s in our daily routines. We are currently creating a classroom museum using artefacts connected to children and their families to share our personal history narratives.

We are excellent mathematicians and understand that the skills and knowledge we are learning at school is connected to our needs in everyday life.
