CAN COMMUNITY SPIRIT TRIUMPH IN SEARCH FOR KEYWORTH CAT?A Keyworth couple have praised the “incredible generosity” of their fellow villagers as they desperately search for their missing cat. Long-haired tabby Charlie went missing from his home in Clifford Close on the afternoon of Monday 5th May. Owners, Tricia Quinn and Martin Valentine, have mounted an intensive search for him, including leafleting every home in Keyworth and talking to hundreds of neighbours.Tricia said: “We had no idea there were so many homes in the village, but almost everyone we’ve spoken to has been so kind. Their concern for our Charlie and willingness to look for him has been overwhelming.”Martin added: “We’ve had possible sightings of Charlie from all over the village. People have gone out of their way to look for him - and on the doorstep we’ve received nothing but incredible generosity of spirit from hundreds of locals. It gives us hope that our boy is out there on a bit of an adventure. “Maybe, like boy cats his age can do, he’s just wandered a bit too far from home and got lost. Maybe someone has taken him in, thinking he’s lost. All we know is that we miss him so much - and his sister Elsa misses him too. We just want him to find his way home - and with the help of our fellow villagers we’re sure we can do it.”Charlie is two-and-a-half years old, but is slightly smaller than a fully-grown cat. Unusually he has a very fluffy tail - “like a squirrel’s tail”, says Tricia - and a light patch of fur under his chin. If you see him, please call Martin on 07970 191 163, or Tricia 07576 552 757.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER FOSTERING A CAT?A local animal charity is championing the rewards of adopting loving but overlooked cats. One such cat, rescued thanks to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is six-year-old Archie. Found existing on Nottingham’s streets, Archie was in a bad state with a painful facial abscess, but following dedicated care is now fit and healthy. As with all the charity’s cats, Archie was FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) tested. As he tested positive, he and the charity are taking this opportunity to explain FIV – with the aim that he and others can enjoy new homes. As an experienced volunteer explains: “FIV should definitely not be confused with FeLV (Feline Leukaemia); they’re two entirely different viruses. They’re mentioned together as vets test for both together but, whilst FeLV affects health and lifespan, FIV most certainly does not.”If you are interesting in fostering a cat, please call 0115 932 1555.

ROTARY CLUB HANDS OVER GARDEN TO LOCAL NURSING HOME The Vale of Belvoir Rotary Club transformed the courtyard of the Church Farm Nursing Home in Cotgrave last year by turning an area of low-quality lawn into a garden for residents to enjoy. The area was carefully prepared for planting a variety of garden plants that would have been familiar in the post-war years, would provide colour throughout the year and hopefully inspire some long-term memories. The Rotary Club also installed an area of paving and two benches for the residents to sit on while enjoying the garden. It was decided that the formal handing over of the garden would be better suited to springtime giving the plants time to mature and hopefully be in bloom. The Vale of Belvoir club are investigating other means of supporting the Nursing Home. This will include the introduction of what is termed a ‘Memory Cafe’. These are generally monthly social events where carers, relatives and the people from the surrounding area can chat over a cup of tea and biscuits to reminisce about the good old days and speakers can be arranged to give presentations on local history and events that the residents may recall.

RAISING AWARENESS OF POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDERLocal duo Simon Buckden and Louisa Rodriguez recently ran 216 miles to raise awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The pair are co-founders of Positive Action For PTSD and they ran to the Houses of Parliament to highlight their cause. They were joined by Nicholas Cane, whose story about living with PTSD was in a ‘Book of PTSD’, which was presented to Downing Street. The day was finished by them going to the most famous door in the UK - Number 10 Downing Street - where they delivered the Book of PTSD to David Cameron to highlight the reality of PTSD for individuals that live with it and how it can affect anyone that has witnessed or experienced something traumatic. The Book of PTSD contains the stories and experiences from people living with PTSD. There are stories from police officers, prison officers, survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, rape, childbirth trauma, people that have witnessed death of a loved one and stories from loved ones explaining how PTSD has impacted on their lives. Louisa told The Local News: “The run was tough but it was worth it to raise awareness of all PTSD for anyone affected, including partners and loved ones. It was truly an honour to carry the stories and voices of all those affected. “It was the most incredible and emotional day to speak at Parliament and go to Downing Street. This is just the beginning of further work by our organisation to create awareness, education and positive change around PTSD.”Simon said: “I feel very humbled by the whole event and hope we can utilise it to continue our work around raising awareness and educating for all forms of PTSD. I am very proud as a person who has PTSD to have overcome much pain and symptoms to complete this historic run and I hope it gives hope for many out there with PTSD.”

CLUBHOUSE UPGRADE FOR RUGBY CLUBNottingham Moderns RFC, based in Wilford Village, have recently completed building works on their clubhouse facilities as part of a £200,000 renovation and extension project. The scheme involves the thorough upgrading of their premises, together with the installation of a fully sustainable heating and power system that will make the clubhouse energy self-sufficient for years to come. The project was officially unveiled by Lillian Greenwood MP during the annual Presidents’ Day celebrations. This saw the whole club, from junior under-sevens through to a charity first-team match, playing throughout the same day. There was also further fun for the 300 revellers, including bouncy castles and ‘coach-the-coach’ activities for the children and a beer festival for adults. The club’s extended clubhouse facilities and function suite is now open for business and they welcome anyone looking to host a business event, a private party or a celebration to get in touch. ADRIAN’S CHARITY CYCLE FOR THE FRIARY Local man Adrian Bremner, along with seven other people, recently cycled the length of the Outer Hebrides over three days.He told The Local News: “The 220-mile route took us from Vatersay in the south, through Barra, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist and onto Harris and Lewis, finishing at the most northerly tip of the Butt of Lewis. We then cycled the 25 miles back to Stornoway. The south to north route was supposed to give us the best chance of a tail wind, but a head wind was pretty much the order of each day. “The weather was very hebridean on day one, but dry and bright on days two and three, which made a real difference to the cycling and our spirits. “Each of the group were doing it for their own cause and mine was The Friary. So far, I’ve raised £1,300 for this great cause. “My just giving page (www.justgiving.com/Adrian-Bremner) is still open until 10th August for further donations.”

SPONSORED BIKE RIDE FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE ASSOCIATION [MNDA]By Vonnie Daykin

Last year, I waited at the finish line of the 100-mile Great Nottingham Bike Ride for my husband Tim to finish. As I stood there, I got thinking that maybe I could do the 25 or 50-mile ride in 2014. My Mum has Motor Neurone Disease (MND), and to watch how it has affected both her and the family, is something no-one should have to go through or watch. You feel so helpless. By doing the bike ride, I feel I am helping other families that are living with MND. At this time there is no cure and no answers to why some people get this dreadful disease. My Mum, Mavis Cockayne, was an active person and would do anything for anyone. To see her today bring tears to my eyes. It’s like being buried alive paralysed from the neck down, not able to hold a conversation - just a few mumbled words, but she is aware of what is going on around her. That’s me, Vonnie. Never ridded my old bone-shaker bike out of the village of Plumtree before. What seemed a good idea at the time is now reality. After having an appendicitis in April 2013, trying to get fit has not been easy. If there is anyone interested in becoming my cycling buddy while I am training, please give me a call on 0115 937 3940.

CROPWELL BISHOP CHURCH NEEDS YOUR HELPLocal people flocked into St Giles’ Church in Cropwell Bishop to launch an appeal and to see for themselves the perilous structural problems which forced its closure across the Christmas period.Happily, with support and shoring now in place, the building can once again be used for services and specific purposes under supervision. Please have a look at the website savestgiles.co.uk for information on how to donate and be part of this rescue story.

WORLD’S TOP YOUNG GOLFERS HEAD TO RADCLIFFE The best young golfers in the world will be descending on Radcliffe next month. Founded by the Notts club in 1982, the McGregor Trophy, or the English Boys [Under 16] Amateur Stroke-play Championship, has been played for by many of today’s leading players, including US Open Champion Justin Rose who won in 1995. The following year Italian Ryder Cup star Edoardo Molinari was the champion. Worksop’s Lee Westwood played in the event twice.

“These young players are incredible,” says Radcliffe pro Craig George. “They can hit the ball 300 yards and with their irons they have accuracy that most players can only dream of. All the players who come to Radcliffe are off scratch or perhaps have a maximum handicap of one.” The course is being prepared carefully for the McGregor, when not only the best players come to Nottinghamshire but the club welcomes spectators too.“We invented the McGregor Trophy here at Radcliffe,” said club secretary Bill Dunn. “We’re proud to support juniors and we hope the McGregor will also inspire more youngsters – boys and girls - locally to take up the game.” The McGregor Trophy takes place at Radcliffe from 15th to 17th July 2014.

Bingham Methodist Church’s ambitious scheme to replace the old Methodist Church with a new multi-purpose church and community centre has moved one step closer with full planning consent being approved by Bingham Town Council. No objections to the proposals were received from the public or raised by the planning committee and the plans will now pass to Rushcliffe Borough Council for final approval. A decision is expected later this month. Bingham Methodist Church has so far raised £1.7m via its BReAD appeal towards the building work and fundraising is continuing to cover the cost of internal fixtures and fittings. Once full planning permission is secured, work is provisionally scheduled to begin from 1st December 2014 and be completed in time for Christmas celebrations in 2015.The new centre will provide a multi-use seated area with audio/visual facilities to be used for meetings such as U3A and Women’s Guild, whilst also providing a worship space for both Catholic Mass and Methodist Services on a Sunday.

The plans feature a large hall with three smaller meeting rooms, and an entrance space with tables and chairs where coffee can be served. It will be designed to minimise energy consumption and use new technologies. The new development will provide much better access particularly for the disabled and will provide a focal point for the town centre. The Rev Richard Tanner said: “Fourteen years after we first had the vision to create a new church and community centre in the heart of Bingham we are nearly there. “With our town rapidly expanding, the facilities we can provide are going to be needed more than ever. We are really excited about the possibilities.”The BReAD appeal is still open to donations. Should anyone wish to contribute to the campaign they can do so by visiting the Just Giving website for the BReAD appeal at www.justgiving.com/BMCbread

BINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH BUILDING PROJECT MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER

MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION A SUCCESSBy Graham Dean

Bingham Model Railway Club’s fourth exhibition at Cotgrave was again a success. The group had 18 layouts on display, three of which were by members Les Richardson, Gareth Harbottle and Trevor Webster. The layout voted ‘Best in Show’ was Coton-on-Dove with Gareth’s Airesby Colliery a very close second. Airesby is based on where Gareth spent his childhood at Knottingley near the river Aire, with collieries loading merry-go-round trains for the power stations. Trevor’s Whatton Parva got the Best Scenery award. Ian Mumford and Ian Orchard were so impressed by the exhibition that have already visited the clubrooms as potential new members.

They also support the parents. He told The Local News: “My daughter Florence has Down’s Syndrome and she attends a school called Rutland House School for Parents in Nottingham. The school does amazing work for children with Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other related conditions. They give kids much-needed life skills and regularly get local families together to share their experiences. It’s incredibly important to know other people who have similar issues to your own family; we can share our stories and help each other.”

NCT DRIVER SHAVES HEAD IN BROTHER’S MEMORY Nottingham City Transport (NCT) driver and Cotgrave resident Amanda Ogelsby (25) had her head completely shaved on board a bus to raise money for Diabetes UK, a charity close to her heart. She said: “Several members of my family have Diabetes. Six years ago my brother Terry sadly passed away from Diabetes-related complications, aged just 23 – I miss him dearly. Diabetes UK offers a lot of support to people with the condition. They help them come to terms with having Diabetes, support them in adjusting their lifestyle and even talk to them about participating in research to find a cure. They’re a fantastic charity and I wanted to do something just a little bit unusual to try and raise as much money for them as possible.”Nottingham City Transport has donated £250 to the cause, helping Amanda get very close to her £1,000 fundraising target for the head shave, and she is keen to take part in other activities for the charity in the future.Amanda added: “In 2012 I managed to raise £916 for Diabetes UK by doing a tandem sky dive, so I’m really hoping to beat that total this time around.”If you would like to contribute to Amanda’s fundraising total, log on to justgiving.co.uk/amanda-ogelsby1 to donate.See the video of Amanda’s charity head shave on Nottingham City Transport’s website at nctx.co.uk

A LICENSE TO DANCEOver 100 South Wolds Academy students took part in the school’s annual dance festival ‘A License to Dance’ in May. The students danced their way through 24 different routines, including two James Bond-themed dances. It was performed to over 500 people over three nights, plus a daytime show for local primary school pupils. The students had been rehearsing for the last two terms in PE lessons, after school and at lunchtimes. Many had even choreographed their own routines, with additional choreography from dance teachers Gemma Vitel and Annabel Simpson.Head of academy, Halina Condon, said: “This year’s performances were once again amazing, and we really appreciate the hard work and commitment of both the students and the staff to make the show so successful.”

KARATE CLUB SUCCESS IN RUDDINGTONOn Sunday 18th May, three junior students from the Ruddington & Bunny Shotokan Karate club passed their black belt test. Robert Pannell told The Local News: “The group is really proud that the youngsters did exceptionally well at these gradings. It was extremely hot in the village hall and they had to perform in front of the head of the association.”

LIMERICK - By Dennis Dixon. There was a bowls player from Bingham,Whose style was always to sling ‘em.He slung ‘em so far,They bounced off a car,And on to the church bells to ring ‘em.

DOING A POEM - By Jennifer Handfield.Oh look, it’s the Rushcliffe Local NewsAnd they say they publish poems.Me thinks I could do one,What is there to lose?Words dance in my head, but have I got time?To make a readable rhyme. Would it be pretty? Weather, gardens, or stuff that is witty.Or what about politics and serious words to be said.No humour, just dour, lines that people would read, whatever the hour.Royalty, celebsLove, death and the restWould readers think were just in jest.A play on words, a pun, now there’s the fun.Yes, I will do some thinking and send them on,But there’s the garden to do and here comes the sun.

WHAT IS LOVE - By Sheila Laxton. As I look into your face,I see the grace you have for me.I see the love that never ends,I see it as long as eternity. As I live from day to day,You are with me along the way.You are my friend, my saviour tooYou are with me, no matter what I do.Your gifts are many, your treasures are true,You are always there for me - and you.

COUNCIL TAX PROBLEMS I have just received an amendment to my council tax bill after notifying them of a reduction in income. It has gone up. It is now at a level which is difficult for me to pay out of pension monies. This does not seem to concern the councils, which are quite happy to increase the levels by 2%, as long as the people receiving the services are not having to pay anything. They say that people on low incomes and pensioners are quite able to live on £165 per week. Are the councillors living on this sum? I am simply earning pension increases to pay this sum over to the councils. The council tax system and so-called reduction scheme are a disgrace.David Waite - Lady Bay

CHOP DOWN YOUR HEDGESNow spring is merging into summer, the hedges and trees are growing again and, as is the way of things, unfortunately some are starting to impede the progess of pedestrians walking along the pavements of where I live in West Bridgford. There seem to be a few homeowners who imagine that we like being slapped about the head by the encroaching foliage as we walk along. A skirmish with protruding bushes and trees can be an unpleasant experience and, personally, I would prefer to keep my eyesight intact. Perhaps some homeowners think it looks nice, but the onus is on those with overhanging hedges and trees to remove the offending growth if it impedes a public right of way.Robert Parker - Lady Bay

COULD YOU FIND YOUR PET?Pets enrich our lives in so many ways. Whether it is a purring cat, a dog who is happy to see us or a rabbit hopping about the garden, they are important family members. So we owe it to them to make sure they stay happy and safe. Thousands of cats and dogs go missing each year, and many are picked up as strays and never find their way home. June is National Microchipping month and Erica Coleman-Field of All Creatures Veterinary Centre is offering free microchip checks and £10 microchipping throughout the month. The aim is to make it easier to re-unite pets with their owners. So if you aren’t sure if your pet is chipped, if your details are correct on your chip registration, or want peace of mind that your pet can be traced back to you if they are lost, stop by All Creatures Veterinary Centre in Radcliffe, the Vets Who Care.

BRIDGFORD PROPERTY MARKET OUTPERFORMS WOLLATON BY 47%By Lee Scotney (owner of Firs, West Bridgford)

Only six miles separates these two desirable towns, yet this can be vast when investing in the buy-to-let market. So, should you be investing in Wollaton or West Bridgford when it comes to property? Both are affluent towns in Nottingham, both similar in size and, taking into account the surrounding villages, have similar average property values. Wollaton’s average house value is £245,200 whilst West Bridgford stands at £256,900. There is also little difference when it comes to the average rents, £697 per month in Wollaton, £693 per month in West Bridgford. This gives both towns an almost identical average yield. Over the last five years, property values in parts of Wollaton have increased by 7.98%. Whilst in West Bridgford over this same five-year term, I found a vast difference - an increase of 11.74%. Investing in property is about local knowledge, where to buy, what to buy, even down to house type or specific street, which can determine the success of your exit strategy.

BERLIN ON THE MENU FOR ABBEY ROAD PUPILSPupils from Abbey Road Primary School have had a taste of Berlin after the school won funding to co-host an international food project. A group of 12 Year 5 students visited the historic city as part of their ‘Food Glorious Food’ project, which Abbey Road has developed with three partner schools from across Europe. During the five-day trip, the children sampled local specialities such as currywurst, created food art and contributed to an artistic display about meat and where it comes from, as well as taking in iconic sights such as the remains of the Berlin Wall, the Bundestag and the TV Tower.

BREATHE IN THE OUTSIDE: QI GONG IN THE PARK ANYONE?By Ian Walker

During my trips to China, from 5am onwards every park and green space would be alive with people of all ages practising different forms of Tai Chi and Qi Gong as a regular start to their daily lives. The Chinese recognise the value of energising the body and mind in the early morning, a time when the Qi is at its strongest.Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see our lovely green spaces here in West Bridgford full of people benefitting from the same ideas? As a teacher and experienced practitioner of Tai Chi and Qi Gong, I am inviting you to come along and join me for this exciting adventure. I will be there every weekday morning at 7:15am on the green field opposite the Co-op. So, whether you are on your way to work, or just an early riser, come and try this unique form of exercise and learn to breathe in the outside. Ian Walker is a massage and manipulative therapist at the Open Door Centre, and an approved teacher of Tai Chi and Qi Gong with the Anglo-Chinese Qi Gong Association.

CAN’T SLEEP? WANT TO STOP TAKING SLEEPING PILLS?There’s nothing quite like a good night’s sleep to put a spring in your step the next day, but this can be easier said than done. My name is Kathryn and I work with adults who suffer from insomnia, by using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-i). CBT-i is a structured programme, which helps you to identify and replace the thoughts and behaviours that are maintaining poor sleep with habits that promote sound sleep. Unlike sleeping pills, CBT-i will help you to overcome the underlying causes of your sleep problem. CBT-i is recommended by the NHS as the most effective, non- medical treatment for long-term insomnia and around 80-90% of people report improved sleep after therapy.I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and also a member of the UK Health Centre Register. So, if you are tired of counting sheep then please contact me at [email protected] or on 07970 539 107 for a free telephone consultation. Please visit www.sleep-therapy.co.uk for more information. LEADING THE WAY IN HYPNOTHERAPY Bahare Mehrali was born in Tehran, Iran and grew up in Germany. Her study, qualifications and work experiences, as a social worker working with families and children, were all based in Berlin. She worked with children and adults with autism and dyslexia. Bahare then decided to learn relaxation techniques, such as autogenic training and progressive muscle relaxation - to help both clients and their families. It was a big success. From that stage, she decided to go a step further to the very empowering approach of hypnosis and clinical hypnotherapy. It worked very well for her clients and she became one of the leaders in her field in the whole of Germany. Bahare moved to the UK with her family four years ago and started to do a full training in clinical psychotherapy. She said: “I was expecting my seconed child and starting a new life in the new home. While I was almost a full-time mum and getting settled, I developed my knowledge of being a clinical hypno-psychotherapist for you today.” Bahare can be found at 10a Gordon Road in West Bridgford, or call 07552 640 003.

CHANGE YOUR MIND & CHANGE YOUR WORLDWhat do you want to change? Perhaps you want to feel calm in stressful situations, increase your self-esteem and/or assertiveness. Overcome inner conflict and increase motivation. Perhaps you want to lose weight easily without going on a diet, or get richer and healthier by stopping smoking. The mind is a very powerful machine. It is responsible for all our behaviours and responses in all situations. There are reasons for all our behaviours, both good and bad. We can access our subconscious mind and discover the root cause for many of our problems. When we discover the reasons, we can change our behaviours and responses in those situations where we want change to occur. This gives us the freedom to take control of our lives.Kate Blatherwick is a clinical hypnotherapist, psychotherapist, EFT practitioner and weight-management consultant. She is the only licensed Hypno-Band practitioner in South Nottinghamshire, a tutor at MindWorks Therapy Training and an NCP-accredited supervisor for therapists. She said: “As an integrative therapist, I mix techniques and interventions and create a tailor-made treatment plan for every individual.”Call Kate on 0115 822 4874 or 07941 357 973 for your free consultation, or visit kateblatherwick.co.uk.

KATH’S COOKING – JUNEBy Kath Oakley

ASPARAGUS & PRAWNSFor me, June is always the best time to enjoy asparagus, it’s simply delicious and so easy to cook. So here is a quick and easy starter, or maybe you might like it as a main, increasing the amounts a little and for pudding how about some English strawberries and cream. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc would go down well too. Ingredients 50g butter, 225g peeled prawns, 32 asparagus spears - shave the stalks and remove the woody ends, Lemon juice & black pepper MethodHeat the butter in a frying pan and gently fry the peeled prawns for around four to five minutes, until cooked and keep warm. Meanwhile, bring a pan of salted water to the boil and plunge in the asparagus and cook for two to three minutes until tender. Divide the asparagus onto four warm plates and scatter the prawns on top. To finish, a good squeeze of lemon juice and some black pepper and lots of crusty bread is fantastic.

LA TASCA – BACK ON TRACKBy Roger Murrow

Going back quite a few years now, one of the smartest, trendiest and tastiest tapas restaurants in Nottingham was La Tasca. It was the place to eat well, be seen, drink well, and generally have a good night out. Over the past decade changes of ownership, a reduction in quality and general confusion about what it is and what it wanted to be, led to La Tasca going from the place to be, to the place to avoid. Now I happy to report a recent change in ownership (the Spanish LTR Grupo de Restaurantes) sees La Tasca taking positive steps to reclaim its former glory. The physical changes to the restaurant have been kept to a minimum. It’s a lovely building but, in keeping with how tapas is seen in Spain, the premises are now much friendlier for someone who just wants to come in for a drink and maybe a nibble. As the food served is of a high standard, this enables the diner to eat in a relaxed manner, and enjoy food that looks as if it’s been cooked to be enjoyed and not fussed over.As to the food itself, I will be honest and state I can’t actually remember what the names were for what we had, but our selection cut across the menu with vegetable, fish, poultry and meat being sampled, and enjoyed. I even seem to recall a tomato salad which was demolished with gusto. Everything was cooked superbly, full of flavour, served with charm and elegance, and blew away all my bad memories of the old regime. All in all, La Tasca is certainly back on track; I think there is still room for improvement, but that does not take anything away from what is being delivered currently. If you are after good tapas then La Tasca is once again the place to go to, and most importantly, to enjoy.

Award-winning developer Villafont Homes, who recently acquired a prime plot of land in West Bridgford, have unveiled plans to build eight bespoke detached homes. Known as The Heights, because of its prestigious setting on Boxley Drive, it is one of the first new-build housing projects in Bridgford for many years. The half-acre site will provide a collection of sophisticated four-bedroom family homes. Chris McGoff, managing director at Villafont Homes, said: “We are very excited to announce the imminent launch of The Heights in West Bridgford. As a developer we pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of design and the properties at The Heights are no exception. Aesthetically they are very stylish, while internally they boast larger than average proportions, a rarity in new build, and superior specifications. We are

also renowned for building in low volumes, which not only heightens demand but means our clients purchase a property with an element of exclusivity, and this is very much the case at The Heights.”Andrew Moss, from John German Estate Agents, said: “Local homebuyers are extremely interested in the development, not least because of the impressive design and style of the properties at The Heights, but also because new-build developments have been scarce in West Bridgford, so it presents a rare opportunity for buyers. With its sought-after location, the benefit of great amenities, transport links and excellent schools, The Heights will be in huge demand and the first sale is testament to this.”Construction has commenced at The Heights, with McGoff & Byrne appointed principle contractor.

JUNE GARDENING DIARYBy John Draper

Long days promise strong growth from flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden, on the patio and on the allotment. It’s time to finish planting out all the tender plants that add exotic flower colour and summer flavours to our British gardens and kitchens. It’s probably too late to sow seeds of tomatoes, sweet peppers, courgettes, but you can always find small plants at your local garden centre that are just ready for planting up in soil, giant planters or patio containers. Flower BorderIf you’ve not been tempted to plant out your bedding plants already, see that they are planted as soon as possible. This includes fuchsias, geraniums, zinnias, petunias and African marigolds. A day before planting, thoroughly water the trays or pots of plants adding a Water Soluble Plant Food to the water. In this way you will help the plants overcome the inevitable transplanting shock that results from root damage and exposure of the roots to drying sun and winds. All plants will appreciate a feed through the leaves and around the roots while they are actively growing, this can be made easier using a hose end feeder.Weeds are a recurring problem in the flower garden, especially at this time of the year. For fastest results on annual weeds in hot, dry weather, using a fast acting contact weedkiller. For something that will kill weeds and grasses that have deep and wandering roots a glyphosate-based

weed control is hard to beat. Because the glyphosate weedkiller moves within the plant from leaves to roots, the whole plant is killed. This process takes a couple of weeks to work, although you will able to spot tell-tale signs that the plant is on the way out within a couple of days of treatment.Scatter Slug pellets thinly between bedding and decorative herbaceous plants that show signs of being attacked by slugs and snails. Pay particular attention to hostas, petunias, marigolds and primroses which are their favourite food and be sure to spread the pellets evenly across the whole flower bed. Or consider mematodes, they work really well. For more information visit nematodesdirect.co.ukGarden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent lawncare specialist. PROGRASS ORGANIC AS STANDARD Prograss, your local independent lawn company, have been so delighted by the results of their new organic-based range of products, they have decided to introduce them as standard at no extra cost to customers, despite the fact that they are more expensive to buy in.Tony Grice, co-owner of Prograss, said: “Most of our competitors tend to use cheaper synthetic, nitrogen-based products that make the grass look green and healthy, but the downside is that the grass is being encouraged to mainly surface feed and growth rate is high - meaning that mowing frequency is increased. Our organic-based products are the same as ones used by golf clubs and sports pitches. They have a patented organic complex base that provides steady growth without dramatically increasing clipping yields. Golf courses, for example, don’t want to be out mowing everyday. They also encourage root development which is essential if the grass plant is to remain healthy during drought and extreme weather conditions. The ideal situation is to have your lawn both surface and root feeding, so it can absorb and store plenty of water and nutrients and remain healthy for a longer period.”

IN MEMORY OF A WILDLIFE ENTHUSIAST On the morning of Saturday 10th May, over 20 of Margaret Price’s friends met at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s (NWT) Wilwell Cutting Nature Reserve to commemorate her lifelong commitment to Nottinghamshire’s wildlife and to mark the naming of Margaret’s Meadow in her honour. Margaret died in March 2008 at the age of 95. She devoted much of her long life to nature and wildlife conservation. From before she was 40, when she became a founding trustee of the Nottinghamshire Trust for Nature Conservation (later renamed Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust) till just weeks before she died, Margaret was involved in the work of the Trust – especially that of the South Notts Local Group.Valerie Holt, the chair of NWT, reminded attendees of the remarkable life that Margaret enjoyed, her contribution to the Trust as a founding member (she signed the original Article of Association); as a trustee for 20 years and as a long-serving and dedicated member of South Notts Local Group. Valerie also mentioned Margaret’s work for the Treswell

Wood Common Bird Census – the longest-running such project in the country – and her recognition by NWT with the Treswell Award and by Rushcliffe Borough Council with the Mayor’s Special Award for Contributions to the Borough.Afterwards, NWT marketing manager, Erin McDaid, rounded off his cycling tour of all the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s reserves in celebration of the Trust’s 50th anniversary by unveiling the plaque that will remind visitors of Margaret as a ‘lifelong conservationist’. The plaque is installed by the kissing gate on Wilwell’s lower meadow, near the Cowslip Glade which was one of Margaret’s favourite places and where her ashes were buried – and in her honour the first southern marsh orchids were coming into flower on the path to the glade.

IT’S TIME TO TACKLE THE ANTS IN YOUR LAWNAlthough not as harmful to turf as wormcasts, ant hills can disfigure lawns and are a big problem in your lawn. They usually appear in summer, especially prevalent in damp conditions and should be dispersed by brushing the soil when dry. This will avoid smearing them on the lawn when mowing. Over time left untreated the lawn may become uneven. Ants can also damage roots which may cause yellowing.Did you know:• There are more than 12,000 species of ants all over the world.• An ant can lift 20 times its own body weight.• Some queen ants can live for many years and have millions of babies. • Ants don’t have ears. Ants ‘hear’ by feeling vibrations in the ground

through their feet.• When foraging, ants leave a pheromone trail so that they know where

they’ve been.• Queen ants have wings, which they shed when they start a new nest.• When the queen of the colony dies, the colony can only survive a

few months. Queen’s are rarely replaced and the workers are not able to reproduce.

Ants can be controlled by treating with either biological nematodes or chemical treatments. We recommend the following methods of ant control...

Home Defence Ant Stop® Granules (use as a drench on lawns)Application Time: When first noticed, a proactive approach works best. Home Defence ANTSTOP!® Granules contain Spinosad, an active ingredient derived from natural soil bacterium. The product is not designed to kill ants instantly, so they take the ANTSTOP! back to the nest and the entire colony is destroyed.Available from retailer and www.greenergardens.co.uk/shopBiological Control: Nemasys “No Ants”Application Time: Typically April through to September. Control Product: Nemasys No Ants - environmentally friendly and safe for children, pets, wildlife and bees. The nematodes act as an irritant and the ants are displaced from their colonies. Where ant levels are very high repeat applications may be required to prevent the ants returning to the colony. Apply when ant activity is visible on top of the lawn, typically April through to September. Apply to moist lawns and water them in well. Make sure the lawn does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying nematodes. Nematodes are only available direct from www.nematodesdirect.co.ukWhat to do next?Decide on which control or deterrent method will be best for and get started on controlling those ants. Use Pesticides Safely. Always Read the label and product information before useWritten by John Draper from Greener Gardens, John’s experience stems from 30 years working with leading garden brands and garden centre retailers.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE NOTTS IN T20 BLAST ACTION Notts Outlaws have maintained an exemplary record in the group stage matches at Trent Bridge but have suffered three successive defeats in home quarter-finals. They have been installed as second favourites for the competition behind Hampshire and Gurney believes that home form early in the contest will set the tone for a Finals Day charge. “The basis of our home form has been to execute the basics better than our opponents and that’s what we’ll look to do from the first ball of the competition,” said Gurney. “It’s an elongated tournament and we’ve seen some teams field weaker teams towards the end of the group stage if they’re out of contention, so a good start can be vital to take advantage of that.”For your chance to win a family ticket to see Notts in action at one of their home games, answer the question below and send your completed forms to: Notts T20 Blast competition, Nottingham Local News, 1a Blake Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5JJ. FANTASTIC TURNOUT FOR BOWLS OPEN DAY West Bridgford Bowling Club held an Open Day last month. The organisers said: “Largely thanks to the publicity given to the event by the article and advert in the Local News and perhaps the weather, the Open Day was a huge success. “Over 50 people attended to try their hands at bowls and of these, 24 have registered for further coaching. Twenty-five club members were present to give instruction, provide refreshment and talk to the visitors. It was a most enjoyable afternoon for both the visitors and members.”
