In the June 2010 issue of our Temple of Nim newsletter the Gilroys reported on the discovery on Thursday10th June of a 2000 or so year old pyramid-temple structure of Amerindian appearance.

That the structure is of Amerindian style there can now be no doubt as from a return visit to the ruin, made by Heather and I on Saturday 31st July in the course of which I uncovered a number of weathered rockinscriptions of undoubted Amerindian style.

While Heather remained with the car and was unable to assist with what was a very rough job

involving a lot of rock-hopping and climbing [due to her knee injury, soon to be operated on] I carried out alengthy, full measuring of the structure.

As stated in the June 2010 Temple of Nim issue, on that first visit I only had time to make roughestimates of the pyramids proportions. On this second visit I got to work immediately. The structure standson an north-south axis 21.95m wide at the north base, the north, west and east sides have a steep slope rising14.32m to the square summit where once stood a four-sided temple with a doorway about 1.5m wide open tothe south, where the south side of the pyramid forms a lengthy sloping causeway 11m in width up which

worshippers and astronomer-priests once climbed. From the north base of the pyramid to the south end ofthe causeway is 60m in length. Each side of the causeway still shows the remains of walls that are at least80cm in height but might once have been a metre in height when intact. The steps of the causeway have longago fallen away through trees and shrubbery growing up through the crude masonry. I measured the

causeway heights at 5m towards the base and 8.8m height just before the temple. The summit temple, although completely collapsed inwards, still shows an outline which I measured

at 12m long north-south and 11m wide east-west. Large stones [the entire structure is principally ofsandstone/ironstone composition] made up the walls and one of these, standing on the southeast corner ofthe temple enclosure was 1.25m tall by 1m wide and about that in depth. The walls would have been muchtaller when the stones formed the temple, and there would have surely been openings around the walls forastronomical purposes.

At the southeast corner of the temple enclosure a large sandstone slab 1m in length by 60cm tall and40cm deep, revealed the faded image of a human figure wearing a head dress as well as a solar disc and fivetoes.

Beside this slab, lying on the floor of the temple amid fallen rocks was a 1m long by 77cm wide and

25cm deep ironstone altar bearing the image of a snake, with a run-off bowl to the left of the stone forhuman flood? while stones at each side of the doorway bore carvings.

The inside of the west causeway wall was found to possess carvings, one stone bearing a Tree ofLife, the other a large, unidentified image. On the west face of the causeway a huge, 1.68m long by 1.3m tall

by 90cm deep sandstone rock bore a large bird-like image and the neck and head of a snake. Another snakeimage on a smaller stone to its left bore the Mayan-style glyph for a breath of air.

The rock carvings were all chalked in due to their condition for photographic purposes and all showconsiderable wear with time and the elements. The discovery of carvings at this structure began within thefirst minutes of our arrival. The first of these being a rather complicated set of images on a stone 97cm tall by70cm deep and about 60cm wide at the base. The stone being partly obscured on its left side towards the baseby another large stone. I was struck by the crude yet Mayan appearance[?] of this inscription, and called out

to Heather nearby that I had just made this interesting find. The engraved stone rested at the north base of the pyramid-temple. This find, and others shortly to

follow, were about to reshape my theory of Mayan and other Amerindian drift-voyages to Australia and itsisland neighbours in the dim past. Their translations accompany the photos.

*****The east face of the pyramid revealed a large 1.3m long by 60cm tall and 63cm deep sandstone rock

bearing besides small glyphs, a face with a breath glyph rising from the right side of the closed mouth. Twometres to the left I found another 1.2m long by 45cm wide by 80cm deep stone which besides an image ofthe Jaguar God, Balam of the Mayans, there was a bird image, a snake emitting a coiled glyph for breathanother breath symbol and two other small images.

These stones were set into the side of the pyramid and I was about to spot a third after recording

them and returning to the base. Here I realised that a large sandstone/ironstone rock bore the head of asnake and other symbols. The right eye of the snake emitted a tear. After recording and photographing this1.64m long stone, which was 80cm tall by 40cm deep, I chanced to spot another inscribed stone above theother two upon the east face of the pyramid and I was now quickly climbing the structure to record, whatturned out to be three humanoid faces [one image was of a one-eyed figure]. All had noses. There were othersymbols on this rock, which was measured at 80cm wide by 40cm tall by 80cm deep. Rain which had beenthreatening all morning, began to fall, and I climbed off the pyramid and took shelter in the car with Heatherfor some minutes until it died off, then I returned to my task.

Recording all these finds and measuring the pyramid took a good four hours. At the west base of thecauseway amid trees I measured a four-sided miniature pyramid formation made of rubble and pebbles froma nearby watercourse. It was 1m high by 4m squared. Its purpose is unknown for now.

On the previous visit I had discovered a lengthy formation of massive ironstone boulders forming analignment that extends out from the west base of the pyramid on an north-west/south-east axis. I measuredthe formation to be 80m in length by 11.5m in width.

*****The pyramid-temple appears crude due to its rough stonework, but it seems likely that the entire

structure had once possessed a mud brick-like coating or other similar smooth finish long since worn away in the manner of similar temple-pyramids found in Middle and South America.

This structure and its Mayan-like images joins other finds in New South Wales and Queenslandsupporting Mayan and Peruvian sailed raft cross-Pacific voyages to our part of the world. The crude carvingsalso further support my view that Mayan colonists, having reached our shores, having in the course of timelost the expertise to create the kind of art that we are familiar with in their native Mexico, turned to a simpler

art style reminiscent of the earlier Uru culture, which was native to Australia. There may even have been racialintermixture between these people which would see the disappearance of the Amerindians. However, it ismore likely that a gradual simplification of their art saw the decline of traditional Mayan picture-writingamong the Australian colonists. It is this more simplified style which at present forms the basis for myOzmec Amerindian culture.

Heather and I will return for our third investigation of this structure once she has recovered from herknee replacement surgery later this year. In the meantime this lost Amerindian pyramid, hidden amid treesand shrubbery in an Indiana Jones setting, is yet one more reminder that Australias true history ofcolonisation far pre-dates the era of Captain James Cook RN.
