Keenan Elementary By: Kim Wunderlich

Last Thursday, Keenan Elementary School honored the families who have served our country. Veterans were greeted by Student Council near the Wall of Honor showcasing each Veteran’s picture and short biography. They then enjoyed a breakfast with their Little Lion. Keenan kindergarteners lined the hallway and waved their flags as the Veterans processed into the cafetorium for a patriotic program featuring the Keenan Choir. Keenan would like to thank our Boy Scout neighbors from Oak Hills for serving as the color guard and presenting the flags. Thank you to all who served.

Keenan Elementary believes in M.A.G.I.C.

Guests were honored to hear the encouraging words of guest speaker, retired Green Beret Major Will Lyles. He is the father of fourth grader Gabby Lyles and the students and staff appreciate his involvement in this year's program. Throughout his powerful message, he shared that leading and serving simply means "to be a part of something greater than yourself"!

Fourth graders did an amazing job of leading the Veterans Day program this week! All students and staff campus wide, as well as families, attended to honor and celebrate those who have served and still serve our wonderful Land of the Free! Every song, word, and piece of artwork is truly from the heart of Lone Star's children.

L.E.S. Honors Our Veterans

The Lincoln Choir directed by Kristen Watkins and made up of fourth and fifth grade students, practiced diligently in preparation for the Veterans Day Celebration. Their hard work was evident in the two performances held on Thursday, November 8th, to honor our Veterans. The concert included several songs with solos and the recitation of the poem In Flanders Fields. The floral decorations on each side of the stage wall were made in Art by fourth grade students. Red Poppy flowers made by first graders were handed out to former and current military members in attendance. The faculty and student body of Lincoln Elementary are thankful for the many sacrifices made by the men and women of the Armed Forces and the freedoms that these sacrifices provide.

🎵“We know God blesses you for all you did and do,

And we are all blessed too. You are our hero.”🎵

The clouds parted and the rain subsided just in time for the students and staff of Oak Hills to welcome our local veterans and their families into the Lion’s Den for our ‘Celebration of Thanks’ Veterans Day Program. The students of our National Junior Honor Society and Student Council lined the entrance to the school to greet each veteran with rousing applause and a handshake. The students’ excitement to show their gratitude and respect for each and every serviceman and servicewoman was heartwarming to see and brought tears to the eyes of many.

Our servicemen and women make many difficult sacrifices while serving our country. One of those sacrifices means missing important holidays and significant family events. To honor those sacrifices, the students of Oak Hills symbolically presented the veterans with ten $500 checks made out to 12 veteran’s philanthropies. Our student organizations will work this school year to raise the money for their chosen charity on behalf of veterans everywhere.

Student Council - $500 to Wounded Warriors Project

Cheerleaders & Royal Pride - $500 to Fisher House Foundation

Band - $500 Disabled American Veterans

Fellowship of Christian Athletes - $500 to Full Circle Home

Choir - $500 for care packages for Montgomery Nursing Homes

Leadership Academy - $500 to Homes For Our Troops

Theatre - $500 to Operation Finally Home

Athletics - $500 to Freedom Service Dogs of America

Yearbook & Office Aides - $500 to Our Military Kids Foundation

National Junior Honor Society - $500 to Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation

Our honored guests were escorted into the library where they were greeted by our Teen Leadership students. The students pinned each veteran with a beautiful custom Oak Hills flag pin, they played a few games of checkers, and had memorable conversations. On display in the library were our student created posters and poems, a military uniform exhibit, and our Fallen Comrade Table. A delicious lunch buffet of fried chicken, sandwiches, fruits and vegetables, and delightful desserts was provided by community businesses, Oak Hills PTO, and our Lion families. While the veterans enjoyed their meal along with their student, they viewed a slideshow tribute to our students’ military family members, and the Royal Pride Dance Team Officers performed to patriotic music. After lunch, we all moved to the gym for our ‘Celebration of Thanks’ program. The program included performances by our choir and band, a military salute to all branches of the service, and a reading of eighth grader Natalea Ling's winning essay entitled 'Why I Honor the American Flag.'

Montgomery Junior High By: Tracey Hooton

Montgomery Elementary By: Kelly Lowe

We have celebrated our Veterans for 20 years at Montgomery Junior High and continued that tradition this year. Over 400 guests joined us for breakfast, and Veterans could be seen visiting and heard laughing as they reminisced of years gone by.

In the assembly after breakfast, our guest speaker Congressman Kevin Brady thanked Veterans for their service and sacrifice and joining him on stage with the same appreciation was Ambassador Chase Untermeyer from Humanities Texas.

“The Veterans Hall of Honor” was a new tradition we added this year to end the celebration by sending Veterans on their way home with many cheers, hand-shakes and thank you-s. MJH teacher Missy Strickland said, “This day is the epitome of patriotism.” At MJH, we want our veterans to know they will always be remembered.

Our 4th and 5th grade choir did an amazing job honoring our Veterans. A HUGE thank you to MES music teacher, Cindy Siple for her dedication and direction. From hearing a Veteran speak, to the homemade signs and flags, to the touching tribute through songs, our MES Veterans Day program celebrated freedom and honored those who have gone before us and those still serving to preserve our precious gift of freedom.

Our Turn to Serve: MHS Honors Veterans with Breakfast By MHS Student Media

Honoring those who have served in the military, MHS Culinary Arts Class and FCCLA provided breakfast to veterans on Tuesday, November 13.

“It is gratifying,” Joe Waltz said. “Most of us are Vietnam veterans, and we were not welcomed home like this.”

Waltz, who served 25 years in the Air Force, is one of the many veterans that volunteer their time to help the Aerospace Engineering classes build the plane Bear Force One.

“It’s delicious,” history teacher Nathan Wilcox said. “I served almost four years as an Air Weapons Officer. I would tell the other planes where the target was.”

FCCLA and MHS Culinary Arts served burritos, cowboy hash with sweet potatoes, muffins, fruit pizza, and coffee in a buffet line.

“It feels great to be home,” Vietnam veteran Michael Barnett said. “There are two sides to war. I enjoyed the brotherhood and the guys in the war, but I didn’t enjoy the actual war.”

Both veterans and their families were honored at the breakfast because as Michael Barnett’s wife said, wives usually don’t get their husbands back for some time, even when they are physically home from war.

“I am thankful for the delightful breakfast,” Darlene Barnett said.

This breakfast was especially heartfelt for Culinary Arts teacher Terri Knight because her father joined the Navy during World War II at 14-years-old. Her father learned how to cook from a master chef who was on board his ship.

“I am very excited to have my classes cooking for the vets,” Knight said.

Not only was the breakfast meaningful for the veterans, but it was also significant to the students who prepared it.

“It feels amazing to honor the veterans,” senior Hunter Smith said.

The Lions and Bears met under the Friday night lights for the 1st time last Friday, for the game dubbed the “MoTown Showdown”. While the football teams battled it out on the field, the half time show united the Lions and Bears bands, choirs, and drill teams to show unity in our appreciation of our country’s veterans.

Last week we celebrated Veterans Day at the Ranch with a special celebration. We served breakfast to our veterans in the library, had a slideshow to honor our Madelely Ranch family veterans, and we ended with an amazing performance by our fifth grade choir, led by music teacher, Betsy Baney. In addition, art teacher, Ivy Brown, had our students create patriotic art work that we hung in the hallways. We owe so much to our veterans and are glad we could honor them and thank them for their service in such a special way.

The Drive of Honor

The MISD Athletic Department sponsored an extra special part of the Veterans Day celebration at the inaugural varsity football game between the Montgomery Bears and the Lake Creek Lions Friday night. The “Drive of Honor’ was located along the road leading to the stadium and flags also lined the top of the stadium bleachers. Members of the community were invited to salute that special veteran in their life by dedicating a flag in their name on the ‘Drive of Honor’. It was a beautiful way to acknowledge our veterans and thank them for their service. The image below is the flyer that was handed out at the game.

Thank you to the MISD Athletic Department for heading up the project and thank you to the MISD Service Groups and

Athletics Grounds Staff that assembled and displayed the flags on the ‘Drive of Honor’.

Sergeant Reckless by Patricia McCormack

Sergeant Reckless was a horse born in Korea. She was purchased by the U.S. Marine Corps and served in numerous combat missions during the Korean War. Reckless would eat or drink just about anything…coffee, beer, Coca-Cola-even thirty dollars’ worth of poker chips! She was wounded in battle twice, and received many commendations for her brave actions, including two Purple Hearts and a Marine Corps Good Conduct medal. This wonderful picture book by Patricia McCormack was a Bluebonnet book last year. All age levels of students will love reading about this brave horse.
