Transfer of Matter and Energy
How different types of cells get energy to do cellular work!
Transfer of Energy and Matter
What do cells need energy for?
What types of energy works best for cellular work?
Which energy storing molecule is best if you want to put money in the bank for later? Which is the best if you want to get a gumball from a machine?
Glycogen/Starch vs. Glucose vs. ATP
ATP Battery
• “Charged”=ATP• “Dead”=ATP• Can be recharged by
enzymes!
How do ALL living things make ATP energy?
• Cellular Respiration
• BOTH plant and animal cells use this process
Formula for Making ATP
(ATP!!!)
Efficiency: Depends on use of O2
• Aerobic: with oxygen– Plants, animals,
protists– More efficient at
making ATP• Anaerobic: without
oxygen– Some Bacteria and
fungi– Less efficient at
making ATP
Organelle necessary for aerobic cellular respiration=mitochondria
3 parts of Aerobic cellular respiration
Glycolysis 2ATP
Krebs Cycle 2ATP
Electron Transport Chain 34ATP
How is the human body organized to get the materials to make ATP to its body’s cells?
• What does a muscle cell need to make ATP?– Oxygen
– Glucose
• What body system’s bring this material to the cells?– Digestive System
– Respiratory System
– Circulatory System
Anaerobic…Fermentation
• Only 2 ATP total per a glucose!• Two types:
– Alcoholic– Lactic Acid
Practice It!
• BioCoach Activity--This is your classwork today and your homework after your next test. Do each module (#1-6). Take notes on each section, notes should total no more than 2 sides of a page! Try to pick out what’s important using the activities to help.

Flow Chart
• How does energy go from the sun to?1. A human muscle cell
2. Anaerobic yeast cell
*Use your notes as well as what you have learned in Biocoach to help you :)
