DISHWASHER SAFETY

Your safety and the safety of others are very important.

We have provided many important safety messages in this manual and on your appliance. Always read and obey allsafety messages.

This is the safety alert symbol.

This symbol alerts you to potential hazards that can kill or hurt you and others.

All safety messages will follow the safety alert symbol and either the word "DANGER" or"WARNING." These words mean:

You can be killed or seriously injured if you don'timmediately follow instructions.

You can be killed or seriously injured if you don'tfollow instructions.

All safety messages will tell you what the potential hazard is, tell you how to reduce the chance of injury, and tell youwhat can happen if the instructions are not followed.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSWAR N ING; When using the dishwasher, follow basic precautions, including the following:

• Read all instructions before using the dishwasher.• Use the dishwasher only for its intended function.• Use only detergents or rinse agents recommended

for use in a dishwasher, and keep them out of thereach of children.

• When loading items to be washed:1) Locate sharp items so that they are not likely to

damage the door seal; and2) Load sharp knives with the handles up to reduce

the risk of cut-type injuries.

• Do not wash plastic items unless they are marked"dishwasher safe" or the equivalent. For plasticitems not so marked, check the manufacturer'srecommendations.

• Do not touch the heating element during orimmediately after use.

• Do not operate the dishwasher unless all enclosurepanels are properly in place.

• Do not tamper with controls.• Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the door or dish

racks of the dishwasher.

• To reduce the risk of injury, do not allow children toplay in or on the dishwasher.

Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may beproduced in a hot water system that has not beenused for two weeks or more. HYDROGEN GAS ISEXPLOSIVE. If the hot water system has not beenused for such a period, before using the dishwasherturn on all hot water faucets and let the water flowfrom each for several minutes. This will release anyaccumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is flammable,do not smoke or use an open flame during this time.

• Remove the door to the washing compartment whenremoving an old dishwasher from service ordiscarding it.

Do not push down on open door.

Doing so can result in serious injury or cuts.

Electrical Shock Hazard

Electrically ground dishwasher.

Connect ground wire to green ground connectorin terminal box.

Do not use an extension cord.

Failure to follow these instructions can result indeath, fire, or electrical shock.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

For a grounded, cord-connected dishwasher:

The dishwasher must be grounded. In the eventof a r'nalfunction or breakdown, grounding willreduce the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance for electric current. Thedishwasher is equipped with a cord having anequipment-grounding conductor and a groundingplug. The plug must be plugged into an appro-priate outlet that is installed and grounded inaccordance with all local codes and ordinances.

WARNING: Improper connection of theequipment-grounding conductor can result in arisk of electric shock. Check with a qualifiedelectrician or service representative if you are indoubt whether the dishwasher is properlygrounded. Do not modify the plug provided withthe dishwasher; if it will not fit the outlet, have aproper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. For a permanently connected dishwasher:The dishwasher must be connected to agrounded metal, permanent wiring system, or anequipment-grounding conductor must be runwith the circuit conductors and connected to theequipment-grounding terminal or lead on thedishwasher.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

Install where dishwasher is protected from the elements.Protect against freezing to avoid possible rupture of fill valve.Such ruptures are not covered by the warranty. See "StoringYour Dishwasher" in the "Dishwasher Care" section for winterstorage information.

START-UP GUIDEBefore using your dishwasher, remove all packaging materials.Read this entire Use and Care Guide. You will find importantsafety information and useful operating tips.

1, Scrape large food soil and hard items (toothpicks or bones)from dishes,

2. Properly load the dishwasher. (See "Dishwasher Loading.")Make sure nothing prevents the spray arm(s) from spinningfreely.

\

3. Add detergent and check the rinse aid dispenser. Add rinseaid if needed. (See "Dishwasher Use.")

4. Push door firmly closed. The door latches automatically. Runhot water at the sink nearest your dishwasher until the wateris hot. (See "Dishwasher Efficiency Tips.") Turn off water.

5. Press the desired cycle and option selections. (See"Dishwasher Use.") Press START. Or press START to repeatthe same cycle and options as the previous cycle.

DISHWASHERLOADING

Remove leftover food, bones, toothpicks and other harditems from the dishes. To conserve water, energy and savetime it is not necessary to rinse dishes before putting them inthe dishwasher. The wash module removes food particlesfrom the water. The module contains a chopping devicewhich will reduce the size of food items.

NOTE: If hard items such as fruit seeds, nuts, and egg shellsenter the wash module, you might hear chopping, grinding, crunching, or buzzing sounds. These sounds are normalwhen hard items enter the module. Do not let metallic items(such as pot handle screws) get into the wash module.Damage can occur.

It is important for the water spray to reach all soiled surfaces.

Load dishes so they are not stacked or overlapping ifpossible. For best drying, water must be able to drain from allsurfaces.

Load heavy pots and pans carefully. Heavy items can dentthe stainless steel interior of the door if they are dropped orbumped.

Make sure pot lids and handles, pizza pans, cookie sheets, etc., do not interfere with the spray arm rotation.

Conserve water, energy and save time over hand rinsing byrunning a rinse cycle to keep dishes moist if you do not planto wash them soon. Foods like eggs, rice, pasta, spinach, and cooked cereals may be hard to remove if they are left todry over a period of time.

Quiet operating tips

To avoid thumping/clattering noises during operation:

• Make sure lightweight load items are secured in the racks.

• Make sure pot lids and handles, pizza pans, cookie sheets, etc., do not touch interior walls or interfere with the rotation ofthe spray arm.

• Load dishes so they do not touch one another.

NOTE; For built-in models, keep sink drain plugs closed duringdishwasher operation to prevent noise transfer through drains.

The larger Main Wash section automatically empties detergentinto the dishwasher during the wash. (See the "Cycle SelectionChart.")

m Use automatic dishwashing detergent only. Other detergentscan produce excessive suds that can overflow out of thedishwasher and reduce washing performance.

m Add detergent just before starting a cycle.

• Store tightly closed detergent in a cool, dry place. Freshautomatic dishwasher detergent results in better cleaning.

NOTE: Do not use detergent with a rinse cycle.

Filling the dispenser

1, If the dispenser cover is closed, open the cover by pushingthe cover latch,

2. Fill the Main Wash section with detergent. See "How MuchDetergent to Use."

it is normal for the cover to open partially when dispensingdetergent.

NOTE: Use both sections for cycles with 2 washes. Use only themain wash section for cycles with 1 wash. See the "CycleSelection Chart" for more details.

How much detergent to use.• The amount of detergent to use depends on the hardness of

your water and the type of detergent. If you use too little, dishes won't be clean. If you use too much in soft water, glassware will etch.

• Water hardness can change over a period of time. Find outyour water's hardness by asking your local water department, water softener company, or county extension agent.

• You can order a water hardness test strip. In theU.S.A., call the Customer Interaction Center at1-800-422-1230 and ask for Part Number 4171690.

Different brands of dishwasher detergent have differentamounts of phosphorous for softening water, if you have hardwater and use a detergent with a phosphorous content ofless than 8.7%, you might need to use more detergent, or usea detergent with a phosphorous content higher than 8.7%.

Rinse aids prevent water from forming droplets that can dry asspots or streaks. They also improve drying by allowing water todrain off of the dishes during the final rinse by releasing a smallamount of the rinse aid into the rinse water. Your dishwasher isdesigned to use a liquid rinse aid, Do not use a solid or bar-type.

Filling the dispenserThe rinse aid dispenser holds 4.8 oz (145 mL) of rinse aid. Undernormal conditions, this will last for about three months. You donot have to wait until the dispenser is empty to refill it. Try to keepit full, but be careful not to overfill it.

1. Make sure the dishwasher door is fully open.

2. Open the dispenser by pushing the cover latch.

2

I. Cover latch2. Rinse aid dispenser3, /ndicator window

3, Add rinse aid until the indicator window looks full.

4, Clean up any spilled rinse aid with a damp cloth.

5, CIosethe cover.

NOTE: The cover latch clicks when the cover is closed andlatched.

Hot water dissolves and activates the dishwashing detergent.Hot water also dissolves grease on dishes and helps glasses dryspot-free. For best dishwashing results, water must be at least120°F (49°C) as it enters the dishwasher. Loads may not wash aswell if the water temperature is too low.

To check water temperature1. Run hot water at the faucet closest to your dishwasher for at

least 1 minute.

2. Place a candy or meat thermometer in a glass measuringcup.

3.

4.

IIRinse aid settingThe amount of rinse aid released into the final wash can beadjusted. The factory setting is at 2. For most water conditions •set the adjuster to 1 or 2. If there are rings or calcium (hard water)spots on dishes, try a higher setting.

To adjust the settingOpen the dispenser cover. Turn the adjuster inside the dispenserto the desired setting.

Check the temperature on the thermometer as the water isrunning into the cup.

If the water temperature at the faucet is below 120°F (49°C),have a qualified person raise the water heater's thermostatsetting.

To save water, energy and time, do not rinse dishes beforeputting them into the dishwasher.

Use the Normal cycle whenever possible. This cycle usesless hot water and energy than other cycles,

Use a delay feature (on some models) to run your dishwasherduring off-peak hours. Local utilities recommend avoidingheavy usage of energy at certain times of day.

During the summer, run your dishwasher at night. Thisreduces daytime heat buildup in the kitchen.

Use an air dry, or an energy-saving dry option wheneverpossible. Allow longer drying times (overnight) when usingthese options. Use a rinse aid to improve drying.

Use cycles or options that add extra heat to the wash or rinseportion of the cycle only when needed.

Run your dishwasher with full loads. Run a rinse cycle aftermeals until the dishwasher is full.

• The wash water continuously flows through the Ultra-Finefilter, trapping food particles.

• Two water jets, located under the spray arm remove the foodparticles from the Ultra-Fine filter.

• A coarse strainer prevents bones, pits, and other largeobjects from entering the pump system.

NOTE: Periodically check the coarse strainer and remove anyobjects on the strainer.

DISHWASHER CARE

Cleaning the exteriorIn most cases, regular use of a soft, damp cloth or sponge and amild detergent is all that is necessary to keep the outside of yourdishwasher looking nice and clean.

Check the drain air gap anytime your dishwasher isn'tdraining well.

Some state or local plumbing codes require the addition of adrain air gap between a built-in dishwasher and the home drainsystem. If a drain is clogged, the drain air gap protects yourdishwasher from water backing up into it.

!

The drain air gap is usually located on top of the sink orcountertop near the dishwasher. To order a drain air gap call yourlocal dealer, or in the U.S.A., call the Customer interaction Centerat 1-800-422-1230 and ask for Part Number 300096.

NOTE: The drain air gap is an external plumbing device that isnot part of your dishwasher. The warranty provided with yourdishwasher does not cover service costs directly associated withthe cleaning or repair of the external drain air gap.

To clean the drain air gapClean the drain air gap periodically to ensure proper drainage ofyour dishwasher. Follow the cleaning instructions provided by themanufacturer. With most types, you lift off the chrome cover.Unscrew the plastic cap. Then check for any soil buildup. Clean ifnecessary.

Storing for the summerProtect your dishwasher during the summer months by turningoff the water supply and power supply to the dishwasher.

Winterizing your dishwasherProtect your dishwasher and home against water damage due tofreezing water lines, If your dishwasher is left in a seasonaldwelling or could be exposed to near freezing temperatures, haveyour dishwasher winterized by authorized service personnel.

Cleaning the interiorHard water minerals can cause a white film to build up on theinside surfaces, especially just beneath the door area.

Do not clean the dishwasher interior until it has cooled. Wearrubber gloves. Do not use any type of cleanser other thandishwasher detergent because it may cause foaming or sudsing.

To clean interiorMake a paste with powdered dishwasher detergent on a dampsponge and clean.

OR

Use liquid automatic dishwasher detergent and clean with adamp sponge.OR

See the vinegar rinse procedure in "Spotting and filming ondishes" in "Troubleshooting."
