Commendations galore for Unilorin Bulletin

publishers of Unilorin Bulletin. Then it was very inconsistent because we were bringing it out monthly as the occasion arose; but in the last five years it's been a very wonderful thing that Unilorin Bulletin Editorial Board and all the staff have been doing because there is no passing Monday of every week that the Bulletin does not come out which shows that the University of Ilorin is more publicised and it is more in the news than it used to be in those days. No wonder then that every day you open a newspaper there is always something about the University of Ilorin.

“What excites me most is that even without people applying, you get to fish out people's birthdays and this makes members of the University community to have a sense of belonging. All I will suggest is that let the rebranding be consistent; let it also not lose its content because I know that for every bit of the Bulletin, you almost know everything about the University. I want to commend the people who are in charge of Unilorin Bulletin – the Editorial Board, all workers and correspondents for doing a very great job.”

Also commending the consistency with which the Bulletin has been produced in the last five years, Prof. R.D. Abubakre, a former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and former Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, said, “The people to appreciate for the transformation of the Unilorin Bulletin are people like Prof. Victoria Alabi, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji, (former Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs and current Chairman of the Editorial Board) and Mr Kunle Akogun, the Deputy Director of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs.”

He noted that “one quality of the Bulletin since the time this crop of people have been on board is that it has never failed to appear at the beginning of any week.”

Prof. Abubakre said, “I never fail reading them on any issue. Your Fast Facts, Laugh Lines, and your quotable quotes. Of course, Unilorin in the News is another good one because it is a record of today and the future.

“I also like the 'Alma Mater' because the writer is well trained and he does things with dignity and decorum

that is why he has been able to sustain the tempo. He is a powerful writer and a powerful arguer. Also, the fact that the 'Alma mater' comes out almost every week means that the person writing it is a mine of information and is totally committed to the Bulletin.

“The editorial work is also commendable because I almost always read the whole of the Bulletin from cover to cover; I take it as a buffet. I was delighted and surprised that the Bulletin was able to capture my birthday; the page gave me the opportunity of knowing that my physician, the Provost of the College of Medicine, was born around the same time with me. It is commendable that you are doing it every week and the spirit should be sustained because you are creating solidarity among people”, he said.

The erudite Arabic scholar explained that “proactive reportage will make the Bulletin command more respect” and cautioned against over-celebrating those who are in charge.

On his part, the Director of the Unilorin Archives and Documentation Centre (UADC), Dr Abdulrafi Omotosho, who noted that Unilorin Bulletin has been useful to the provision of information within the University community, observed that there is need for further improvements. “I can see the proper arrangements of messages in the Bulletin. I believe with time, there is need for more improvements; but as it is now, it is okay”, Dr. Omotosho said.

In her own comment, the Head of the Department of English and former Board Member of the Bulletin, Prof. (Mrs.) Victoria Alabi, said where there is paucity of information dissemination, there is bound to be misgivings among members of such community.

“Unilorin Bulletin has been a good avenue for knowing about happenings on campus and happenings outside the campus. But concerning our staff. Recently, the format of the Bulletin has changed; we have people responsible for whatever they are reporting, we now have columns which is very good. So, we are improving by the day. It is just to encourage those who are there to keep it up”, she said.

Unilorin Distance Learning programme takes off By Mubarak Oladosu

Prof. Yusuf

UNIVERSITY of ILORIN

Unilorin BulletinFebruary 18, 2013NEWS

The Director of the University of Ilorin Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL), Prof. M.O. Yusuf, has described

the Open and Distance Learning programme of the University of Ilorin as a test case for online learning in the country.

Prof. Yusuf, who disclosed this last Tuesday (February 12, 2013) in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin, noted that the Centre actively took off last month with 13 students on the Post Doctoral Diploma in Education (PDDE) programme.

Describing the pioneer students as experienced lecturers who are self motivated to improve on their competencies, Prof. Yusuf added that the students of the pilot programme comprise Ph.D. holders and professors, eleven of whom are staff of the University of Ilorin with one student outside Kwara State.

The Professor of Educational Technology explained that the “Centre for Open Distance Learning is an outreach centre of the University set up to provide access to would-be learners to have pedagogical and other professional skills outside the four walls of the University while meeting the requirements of the Teachers Registration Council and the National Universities Commission.”

He disclosed that the PDDE programme is fully online with the students accessing their materials online in their virtual classrooms, noting that in open and distance learning, materials are made available ahead of time online and students interact with their lecturers via social media and the students may also test themselves and reach their classmates online.

The scholar revealed that the University will soon commence its online Postgraduate Diploma in Education around April and also its online undergraduate degrees before the end of the year, noting that these two programme would be blended rather than being fully online.

According to Prof. Yusuf, the students will not just be consumers but they will be what he called prosumers as they will be required to upload their assignments and researches.

He added that all members of the class will be participants in the activities of other members of the class while the lecturer may upload relevant video and refer

students to materials online. Prof. Yusuf noted that the new system creates a

community of practice which is a departure from the onstage teacher-centered method to student-centered learning and it is unprecedented in the Nigerian university system.

He disclosed that there would be study centres for the PGDE and the undergraduate programmes in towns where there are certain number of students.

On the advantage of the programme, the academic observed that the ODL system is more cost effective as the current students made total payment that is less than N70,000.00 for the 12 month duration of their PDDE programme.

He also noted that the students can learn in the comfort of their homes and avoid the risk of travelling while having support of the Centre through their course advisers with whom they can discuss their objectives and challenges.

Prof. Yusuf said that both academic and non academic University staff have the opportunity to write courseware for ODL courses and some would be outsourced and subjected to quality control like the internally generated courseware.

Happy Birthday TO YOU!

Two men were arguing about their sons' stupidity. Mr. James argued that his son was sillier than Okello's son. Okello however disagreed. So they decided to put their sons to test.

James called his son and asked him to buy something for him at the market. The boy ran to the market without even asking for the money or what to buy. James said, “You see how silly he is? He didn't even ask for what to buy …or money”

Mr. Okello retorted, “Is this what you call foolishness? Just wait and see. He then called his son and told him, “Go home and check if I am in the house”. Okello's son took to his heels at once, ran home and came back panting, “Papa, you are not there in the house. Mama said you are at your friend's place.”

February 18, 2013

Today, February 18, 2013, marks the fifth year anniversary of the re-branded Unilorin Bulletin as a weekly publication, providing a

regular pot pouri of information, education, entertainment and documentation for the University of Ilorin as well as its internal and external publics. How time flies!

Though this publication is as old as the University itself, with its first edition issued on March 31, 1976 by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, more editions of the newsletter have been produced within the past five years than the combined 32 years period before then. And as the University is always better by far indeed and in truth, this re-packaging, conceived some eight months ago but intended to coincide with this year and occasion, is part of the continuous efforts of making the University truly reflect its well-known slogan.

The modern history of the Bulletin as a regular weekly publication began on Monday February 11, 2008. Perhaps, realising the significance of information dissemination as a key component of management functions especially at a period tellingly referred to as the Information Age, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor and former President of the Association of African Universities, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, constituted a six-man Editorial Board that day for the Bulletin under the chairmanship of the veteran journalist, renowned editor and pioneer Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Mr. Doyin Mahmoud, who died on September 20, 2009. May His soul continue to rest in peace.

At their inauguration that day in the Vice-Chancellor's Office, the Editorial Board members were given the mandate of re-packaging the Bulletin after the Monday Memo of the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring its weekly publication, which could not be done before then, and making its electronic version available to all staff and other stakeholders through e-mail.

The following Monday (February 18, 2008), the re-packaged Unilorin Bulletin rolled out in five folios or ten pages with the headline, “IMESO offers a hand in Unilorin Radio Project”. (IMESO means Institute of

Media and Society. It is noteworthy that the Unilorin FM project become a reality with its test transmission taking place a year after and it is also coincidental that February 13 is also now the world Radio Day)

The publication, from computer print-outs then photocopied for distribution, witnessed considerable improvements from actual cord printing a few months after to gloss cover page in the same 2008. Colour was added to the first folio of the Bulletin from January 2012 for more aesthetic appeal, serving as an icing on the cake of its acclaimed contents.

Since 2008, the publication has not failed once, despite the various challenges, and it has tried to even surpass the target it was given through various segments masterminded to whet the appetite of diverse readers.

ndIndeed, this is the 262 edition since February 18, 2012 and the publication has inspired other Nigerian universities, which had sent delegations to the better by far University to under-study how the weekly publication is done with such a remarkable regularity.

According to a critical segment of readers, Unilorin Bulletin is a Monday tonic and one-stop shop of obtaining knowledge, information and pleasure. The impact has been so significant that apart from the visibility if offers the University and the implication of its vast electronic access for the University ranking, some, out of genuine enthusiasm, even confuse the newsletter for a newspaper. Fortunately, the University has a newspaper and a television station in the offing.

With the support also given by the University, under the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who is also a Board Member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), the sky is just the beginning for the Bulletin.

As this publication wears another new look today, the initial efforts of the Mahmoud-led Editorial Board, comprising then Dr. (Mrs.) V. A. Alabi, Mrs. S. S. Abdulbaqi, Mr. A. R. Ajiboye and Mr. I. Z. Aliagan, cannot but be appreciated. On the basis of those initial efforts, five years after, Unilorin Bulletin is waxing stronger and getting better.

Happy birthday and hurray to the weekly Bulletin!
