4. The Health Care ProviderDefinition: A health care provider is a person who is committed to health care and is invested with authority but with corresponding roles and responsibilities to patients, his profession and the society.A. Roles of the Health Care Provider to the Patient:1. 2. FACILITATOR 3. PATIENT ADVOCATE 4. COUNSELOR / TEACHER / EDUCATOR.5. ROLE MODEL sets the examples of proper attitudes, knowledge and skills to the patient.a. Guard against being arrogant and showing undesirable bedside manner.b. Must be understanding, humane and compassionate c. Must recognize his / her own limitations and ask for help when and if needed.d. So that patients can be competent stewards of their own health, the health care provider should also be competent both in scientific and interpersonal skills.e. Must appreciate the facts gathered from the patient and respects patients values regarding what is acceptable to him and how the patient feels.6. HEALTH SERVICE PROVIDER

Other Specific Responsibilities:a) b) To strive to establish and preserve trust.c) Share information he/she possess with those who legitimately need it in order to have an informed consent.d) To refrain from lying or giving misinformation.e) To keep secret information not legitimately needed by others, but which if revealed might either harm the patient or others or destroy trust.

B. Responsibilities of the Health Care Provider to the Profession1. Live up to the ideals of the profession so that it will not just be an ideal but a reality.Ideals of the Profession:a. Christian concern for the poor and respect for the human body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.b. Consideration of the sacred dignity or life of the human person and the sacred covenant of trust.c. Service-orientedness2. Should be competent in knowledge and practice, and possesses a compassionate heart.3. As an authority of competent knowledge and skills, he/she must contribute to knowledge already available by conducting research, with reverence to human person and the environment.4. Conduct himself / herself in an ethical professional way and be worthy of being a role model to his younger colleagues.

Fraternal Corrections: Members of the profession do not simply ignore or hide the defects of colleagues out of indifference or self-interest. Personal concern to check out limitations first in order to help others in the profession checks their own limitations. Concern to help colleagues overcome their defects / limitations and repair the consequences. Right / obligation of workers in subordinate positions to correct superiors and supervisors.

5. To establish personal relationships within the staff and administration that will form the basis of professional cooperation.

C. Responsibilities of the Health Care Provider to the Society1. Stand for the justice of the poor.2. Avoid temptation to exploit or take advantage of families and communities and always care about human values.3. Make health care available to all at reasonable cost.

D. Rights of the Health Care Provider:1. 2. Right to adequate and qualified assistance as necessary.3. Right to reasonable and prudent conduct from clients right to cooperation from patients when making personal inquiries or when examining patients.4. Right to adequate working conditions.5. Right to just compensation for services rendered.6. Right to reasonable and prudent conduct by other health care providers.

Virtues: 1. Fidelity: faithfulness 2. Honesty: truthfulness3. Integrity: wholeness4. Humility: recognizing capabilities and limitations5. Respect: paying attention to others6. Compassion: loving kindness7. Prudence: foresight8. Courage: doing what one sees as right without undue fear

Vices:

Causes: Authority and power of the HCP over a vulnerable client The respect he gets from society Economic rewards of his profession

1. Pride: inordinate self esteem2. Greed: inordinate acquisitiveness3. Fraud: deception intended to gain money or personal interest
