Achieving a good online reputation has driven a lot of restaurant and hotel owners to adopt barely legal systems to have positive reviews. Fake reviews that can be purchased by unscrupulous entrepreneurs are one of the major problems that big companies such as TripAdvisor and Yelp are still far from resolve.

The problem

During last years, most concerns were raised about this phenomenon due to its big impact. According to the Harvard Business School, the influence of reviews on revenues is between 5 and 9%. In a recent survey conducted by BrightLocal it was found that 79% of consumers have read a fake review in the last year, but a worrying 84% couldn’t always spot it. Fake reviews are a limit for the ability of consumers to make informed decision and affect a fair competition by increasing the risk of adverse selection.

The solution

We developed the first blockchain-based digital system for certifying online reviews (patent-pending) by 2 key proves: proof-of-location and proof-of-identity. Technology-wise, TBoxChain by using NFC technology can distribute a cryptographic ticket containing the information linked to a specific geographic location. This process is suitable to be used in very different fields, such as tourism and hospitality, restaurants, events, gaming, smart cities and proximity marketing.

How does it work?

Download the app from the iOS or Android app store. Register to the community. In this moment the first proof is performed, that is the proof-of-identity. Only real people, with a real identity might join the community and share their opinions. Users will be asked to put the following information: Mobile number (that will be confirmed sending a OTP via SMS), Name, Surname, Date of birth (PEGI 16), City, Picture. The smartphone will be connected to the user’s account.

Join the community and start discovering the world around you. Within the app, users will find pages of restaurants, hotels and attractions and will be able to surf and read their reputation and choose how to spend their time.

Search for the Tbox and get your presence. This is the second of our proves, the proof of location that aims at checking if a user has actually visited a location. The verification about the geographic position starts when the user places his/her smartphone near the TBox. Nearly instantaneously, the position of the smartphone is matched against the “geographic print” of the TBox. If the two positions are similar, within a very small margin of error, the TBox releases a cryptographic ticket that allows users to draft a review and can also be used as proof-of-presence for public places.

The TBox is designed to be iconic and easily recognizable, impossible to open and sabotage and able to work without plugs due to the very low power needed to operate.

TBox uses a tamper resistant secure Micro Controller Unit with Encrypted/authenticated interface to host processor, ECC-based authentication and TLS set-up that ensures the integrity and confidentiality of the information exchanged within the system and makes their repudiation impossible.

The Tbox represents the bridge between the real and the digital world!The blockchain ensures the complete traceability and immutability of the information. Moreover, through blockchain we can implement the smart contracts and make the whole system completely democratic.

Tboxchain is also an advanced cross-border and cross-company loyalty platform that rewards the virtuous behaviours of Citizens 3.0 and of any destination that promotes cooperation among the stakeholders. Finally, Tboxchain is able to increase the presences in all business locations, tourist and cultural attractions.

The Trust Community

It gathers all the people joining the community to review hotels, restaurants, attractions, monuments, to read other users’ reviews or to certify their presence in specific places. Their participation in the community is free of charge. Furthermore, they’ll be able to make in-app purchases and earn loyalty points (XTBs).

Restaurateurs, hoteliers and tourist attractions’ managers who will benefit from the certified reviews and visitors’ book. They will pay a tiny monthly fee (about 10€) to join the platform.

Citizen 3.0 BusinessesWe aim atcreating the first global trust-based community. It is made of two big tribes:

Proof-of-Presence: all the people attending the events could be easily tracked using their smartphones. If NFC is not embedded, it will be possible to use an NFC tag in a bracelet to be handed out for free. Thanks to API, Tboxchain app could become the pass for any visitor to access not only the events venues but also public places such as museums, parks, etc.

Measuring the quality of services: A big amount of trustworthy information will be available for businesses and public authorities that will be able to implement corrective measures in real time in case the level of customer satisfaction goes below a certain threshold.

Discovering routes: thanks to the Tboxes deployed on the territory, it will be possible to manage the flows of tourists/visitors towards the less visited areas by implementing gamification approaches (e.g. Pokemon Go). By doing this it will be possible to relieve the stress on the most crowded areas.

Anyway, if this is the potential market, the market we can define as qualified and easier to address is the qualified market, made of those hotels and restaurants already listed on consumers’ review platforms. The potential market decreases to 4 million restaurants, 2 million hotels and nearly 1 million attractions.
