Restaurant ReviewA little outside of Wimborne town, The Black Horse pub used to serve what Idescribed as the best fillet steak I've ever tasted and I certainly lookedforward to ordering it again since I'd not been back to this pub restaurantfor while.

Sadly, fillet steak was no longer on the menu so I had to choose another dish.

My colleague and I were the only customers in on this particular cold day just a fewdays before Christmas. Well, there was another person but although they were stoodat the bar, they weren't eating or drinking as far as we could tell.

Apparently, in order to save heating bills, the pub now closes at 3pm and is no longeran all-day food serving restaurant. The atmosphere was very quiet, it has to be said.

My colleague and I both ordered the steak pie with vegetables and potatoes.

My steak pie was absolutely stuffed with meat and very tasty pastry. There was agenerous portion of vegetables and potatoes. I enjoyed by pie but my colleague saidthe pastry was not good and, as they are an expert cook, I didn't argue but it tastedfine to me.

My colleague also said that the vegetables were undercooked but, again, I thoughtnothing of it until they mentioned it to me.

We did feel that the tea and, then, coffee should have been a higher temperature as,drinking it as soon as it was served, we were able to finish it then and there as it wasonly warm.

My cheesecake sweet was perfect to my eyes and taste-buds but, you guessed it, mycolleague wasn't happy with theirs. I won't go into details but, I imagine that ifyou're an expert cook, you're bound to find 'problems' but I felt mine was just fine.

I felt that it was a shame that it wasn't as busy as all the other pubs we'd visited atthat time of day as the manageress was very nice to talk to and made us feel mostwelcome. She did assure us that there was a booking of 25 coming in later in theweek, which was good to hear.

The Black Horse has changed, it's under newmanagement but is still serving generous foodportions, although the menu does not offer asmuch choice.

The prices are average for a pub restaurantwhere we are sure that, with more customersvisiting, the atmosphere would be much betterand the heating would be sufficient.

Kigus are Japanese animal suits which are lightweight, durable and really fun towear. Unlike most of the disposable fancy dress rubbish out there, a Kigu is anobject to cherish and treasure. Kigus are perfect for fancy dress parties andfestivals, but that’s not all they’re good for. There’s nothing better to wear aroundthe house on a lazy Sunday afternoon and they make great pyjamas too!

We change the animals in our Shop regularly, bringing in new ones all the time. Some arehere to stay, while others are available in strictly limited numbers.

The word ‘Kigu’ is short for ‘kigurumi’, which literally translates as ‘costumed animal character’in Japanese. Kigurumi are already hugely popular in Japan, where they are worn as bothstreetwear and pyjamas, but they’ve never been sold outside Asia before. Kigu is proud to bethe first and only company to bring these amazing animal suits to Europe.

Kigus are unique in the world of fancy dress. They hang loosely on the body, which makesthem really comfy and unrestricting. You can slip in and out of a Kigu in seconds and you caneven wear your own clothes underneath!

Each of our Kigu animals is lovingly represented, with exactly the right eyes, ears, nose andtail. The Kangaroo even comes with a Joey in its pouch and the Chicken with a little chick in itspocket.

Some Kigus come in our regular fabric and others in our thin fabric. Both can be worn for alloccasions and are lightweight, comfy and breathable.

Our regular fabric Kigus are slightly better for lounging, sleeping in or wearing outdoors. Ourthin fabric Kigues are ideal for sweaty indoor parties and hot weather.

All Kigus come with elasticated wrist and ankle cuffs and some come with pockets too.

Kigus are meant to be baggy- this makes them really comfy and looks hilarious. Kigus havebeen specially designed to fit adults and big kids alike. So don’t worry, whether your 5ft or over 6ft tall, a Kiguwill easily fit you. One size fits all!

Unlike other fancy dress costumes that fall apart after acouple of days, Kigus are built to last. What’s more, they are machine washable, so you’ll be able to enjoywearing your Kigu again and again.

Kigus are available from The Amazing Trick Box inPoole High Street.

All other fancy dress is currently available at a specialdiscount price which is just £20.00 instead of £26.00and no need to worry about the VAT increase. This offeris on from now until June 2011.

All fancy dress are top quality costumes.

February 1964 - Beatlemania

On February 7th 1964 the Beatles arrived in NewYork at the start of their first tour of the UnitedStates.

More than 300 screaming teenagers greeted themas they stepped on to the tarmac at KennedyAirport. Many teens had skipped school or work. Some were in tears and many carried placardswhich read "I love you, please stay".

The Beatles' first scheduled appearance was onAmerican television on the Ed Sullivan show. More than 5,000 fans applied fortickets to be part of the audience but only 750 were lucky enough to get them.Security barriers had to be erected and the fab four received the kind of policeprotection usually reserved for kings and presidents! It is said that the crimerate dipped to a 50 year low as more than 40% of America tuned in to watch.

They performed the songs All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You,I Saw Her Standing There and I Want To Hold Your Hand.

Four decades later, also in February, the Beatles were given the President'sAward at the Grammys to mark the 40th anniversary of what became knownas "Beatlemania". It was accepted by the widows of John Lennon and GeorgeHarrison, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison.

Looking Back At Old PooleThe Memories Of Tom Scott The Big Swim

Memories of Old Poole

Can you remember the ferryman who gave a rowing boat service between theQuay and the Shipwrights Arms on the Lower Hamworthy side and Burdensand Piplers on the Poole side? The fee was 1 penny per trip per person.

My mother would use the ferry boat some days when she’d been shopping in the HighStreet. Now, if you wanted to get the ferryman’s attention from the Piplers side of thequay you had to shout at the top of your voice “OVER” because if he was in his woodenhut he couldn’t hear you.

My mother could never shout so she had to wait for someone to call out. He didn’t likerowing for a single fare, so he would wait for 3 or 4 people, and on occasions mumcouldn’t wait any longer and would walk all the way round over Hamworthy bridge toour home in Harbour Road, which reminds me of we 3 Boys Big Swim.

We used to swim from the ferry steps quite often, when the ferryman wasn’t aboutbecause he didn’t like his steps getting wet.

One day he caught me off guard and threw me in the drink. I went down very deepand I found myself just like a “limpet” fixed to the bottom of the mine sweeper mooredat the quay. I was scared. Slowly I eased myself to the surface seeing the shade ofthe water getting lighter. What a relief to breathe again.

One day three of us boys decided to swim the quay width when the tides were still. We set off and slowly swam to the other side of the ferry steps.

One boy even did “Dog Paddle” all the way. Standing at the top of the steps we lookedacross the quay at the distance we had swum.

Then the three of us had to make up our minds, do we swim back or walk all the wayalong the quay over Hamworthy bridge then down Harbour Road, back to the ferrysteps at the Shipwrights Arms? Walking bare foot, and just swimming trunks it wasquite an achievement for eleven and twelve year olds.

At some time later, I decided to do the swim again, hoping to swim to the “Piplers” sideand back. I asked an older lad (a teenager named George) to accompany me this time. When we set off the tide had started running (ebbing) and at two thirds of the crossingI was beginning to feel the strain and this time I was drifting off course towards theFish Shamble Steps. I shouted to George for assistance and he nursed me to the steps.I was so glad he was at hand otherwise it could have been a sad ending, and this timethe ferryman rowed us back to the Hamworthy Steps.

The event taught me one thing, especially when you’re young. You can be over confidentand sometimes you don’t give enough thought to the task you are undertaking. Mostold Poole lads swam in the quay, and it was allowed. People came out of the pubs andthrew coins in the water and we would try to gather them, it was almost impossible, you had to be extremely lucky to bag one.

When I was called up for “National Service” in 1950 into The Royal Navy I thought “I’mglad I can swim”.

Is Your Business Getting It’s FairShare Of Sales Via The Internet?

Those of you who use the Internet on a daily basis might notrealise that it can actually be quite a ‘money earner’ if youonly knew how.

For those running an offline business, getting involved inputting your product or service online can pay dividends …big time.

However, learning how to do this and get the best out of it would take years ofexperience and know-how.

If used properly, the Internet can be a very powerful business tool, helping you toserve customers better, increase productivity, and importantly, help to drive upprofits. These days more than ever before almost every organisation needs to makesure they are getting the most out of the Internet.

I have a website. Is that enough?

A website is a great starting point, but unfortunately, that just is not enough any-more. Today's online environment craves dynamic change and continual interaction. In addition to what you post, others are commenting on your company as well. It isimperative that you not only know what is being said about your organisation, but tobe an active participant in the conversation and thus help form a positive view ofyour brand online.

The power of the web has unlimited potential. Not only does it allow your organisa-tion to be easily visible to literally anyone in the world with an Internet connection, ithas also become a valuable tool for interacting with present and future customers. These effects can lead to increased brand recognition, easier access to company in-formation, a broader customer base, and a tangible return on investment.

A business owner should know who his customers are and what their needs are. Oncethat is determined, an owner should ask himself what products and services the busi-ness offers, how it meets the customer's needs and how does it get the products andservices to customers.

Now is the time to look into what can be done for your business. Marketing Buglecan help you when you book a free consultation to find out how your company canbenefit from an Internet presence.

They provide market research that will clearly show the potential for business growthusing the Internet. They first begin by asking you various questions about yourbusiness to understand how you market to your targeted customers. The MarketingBugle system will identify what constraints maybe hindering you from realisinggreater potential. They then explain key ‘enablers’ that can help you to overcomethese constraints.

Blue Valentine (2010) *****Director: Derek Cianfrance

The title of this mature and moving new US indie captures the tug of war betweenthe excitement of new love and the misery of its slow, painful death. YoungAmerican filmmaker Derek Cianfrance bats us back and forth between all sorts ofemotions and moods – hot and cold, hope and despair, energy and lethargy – as heshares with us the exciting beginning and dispiriting end of the five-year marriagebetween Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), two East Coastyoungsters whose relationship is born of trauma and who go from tender sex andtap-dancing in a shop doorway to shouting at each other across the kitchen sinkand wrestling drunkenly in a kitsch motel room during a desperate bid to rekindletheir passion.

We meet the couple in the throes of domesticity asDean, with the air of a kid in adult’s clothing, helpstheir little daughter with her breakfast while aworn-out Cindy snaps at them from the other sideof the room. On the same day, their dog goesmissing, prompting tears, but something else isabsent too, and it’s only when the film retreatsafter 15 minutes or so to a not-so-distant past, where Cindy is a thinner student with ambitions tobe a doctor and Dean is a less ambitious removalsguy with more hair, that we begin the game of moving back and forth in time, witnessing how Dean and Cindy meet and come together – and seeing how they fallapart.

It’s a simple tale of romance found and lost made all the more powerful by itstricksy, illuminating time structure (a reminder of François Ozon’s ‘5X2’ or MikeLeigh’s ‘Career Girls’) and the performances of two of America’s finest young actors.Williams, especially, is on sensitive form as Cindy: she gives an intelligent physicalperformance, whether acting warily towards Dean’s advances, experiencing genuinepassion or feeling repulsed at her husband’s touch as she clenches her fists duringan embrace.

The film has hipster leanings – Dean runs with a trendy trucker look and strums aukulele, while the soundtrack features new songs by Grizzly Bear – but Cianfrancesteers clear of the film’s more quirky potential and holds a steely focus on feelingsand behaviour. He’s helped, too, by strong cinematography (especially during ascene in a futuristic, blue-lit motel room) that subtly stresses the conflictingatmospheres of the film’s two time zones.

There’s a lightness to the whole enterprise – loose direction, easy dialogue, gentleediting – that sits well with the heaviness of the material. The film’s episodicstructure means that it’s heavy on events and emoting, but it’s not all extreme joyor misery, and there are lovely scenes between Cindy and her grandmother andbetween Dean and an old man who he helps move into a care home. It’s abittersweet, affecting film that screams of smart minds both behind and in front ofthe camera.

Always Ready ForA New Challenge

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me – Roald Dahl

This is probably one of Roald Dahl’s less well-known stories, but it is perfect for introducing the younger reader to thewonders of his work. It tells the tale of the ingenious‘Ladderless Window Cleaning Company’ – the Giraffe, whoselong neck reaches the windows, the Pelican, whose beakcarries the water, and the Monkey, who does the actualcleaning. As they set up in business they meet Billy, whojoins them on their first challenge – to clean all 677 windowsat the home of The Duke of Hampshire…

Of course, the job does not go smoothly and soon Billy isinvolved in a fantastic adventure involving diamonds, burglars and a former opera singer. Dahl whizzes the readerthrough a series of twists and turns, with rhymes and songsto keep us going, and with characteristically inventivelanguage choices on every page.

Available as a picture book, illustrated beautifully by Quentin Blake, or as a more‘grown-up’ style paperback, this is sure to become a firm favourite as a bedtime oranytime read.

Poole is a great place to live but how much isthat to do with the natural assets that surroundit and how much from the infrastructure of thetown? Poole Tourism dropped the “Poole. It’s abeautiful place” tagline a few years ago, anaction which is representative of Poole’sstruggle to maintain a distinctive identity.

Only five or six years ago, I remember sitting on mydoorstep in the Old Town and seeing happy, red-faced tourists wandering the streets, eating icecreams. Increasingly, this is a thing of the past asfamily friendly tourist options in the area have givenway to a more adult, bar-orientated culture.

Poole Council’s relaxed planning policies areencouraging developers to submit planningapplications for dense, high rise developments, on siteslike West Quay, that threaten to overwhelm Poole’shistoric infrastructure. Dolphin Quays sits there, its commercial units half empty. There is a glut of flats on the market. What is the logic?

But enough statements of the obvious. What can be done? Poole People is a new,independently-minded, local political party focused on improving the quality of life ofcitizens of Poole. We believe in consensus politics, working together with politicians ofall colours, and community leaders, to create the right conditions for positivedecision-making and effective action.

Poole has enormous potential and we can again be proud of our town. I believe thatPoole needs to invest in its core assets if it is to regain its distinctiveness. Poole isblessed with a wonderful natural harbour and a long history. It also has an artisantradition, most notably from Poole Pottery. In recent years, the Council has sought toencourage financial institutions and large chain stores to come to Poole, at theexpense of tourists. Yet tourism should be a mainstay of our economy.

We need to make Poole Quay and the High Street a place that once again attractstourists and residents of Poole. The Council needs to develop a coherent plan thatrefocuses the area on its historic attributes, creates more family-orientated touristactivities and encourages specialist, independent retailers to invest. Poole People isworking hard to bring local businesses and residents together behind this sharedvision.

Although revitalising the town centre is key to regaining a sense of direction forPoole, it is also crucial that we invest in our local communities. As coastal townsgrow, their historic centres become increasingly distant from their geographiccentres. Local centres such as Ashley Road and Broadstone are focal points ofcommunities and should be celebrated.

Your Poole Your Say

Mark Howell

Page 21: Viva Poole Feb 2011

21

Communities are though fundamentally about people, not places. The Council has a responsibility to look after those in need of careand it is worrying that the current Conservative administrationproposes to cut significantly access to adult social care in Poole. As individuals, however, many of us have often found it too easyto complain about the ills of society while failing to take actionourselves. A society has developed which encourages life to be led a littlebit too fast, and a self-centred mentality.

Respect and consideration for others are essential ingredients for a strongcommunity. I believe in zero tolerance when it comes to anti-social behaviour.Adopting a permissive attitude not only encourages repetition but demoralises thevast majority of law-abiding citizens. However, I also believe that we should activelypromote social behaviour.

How often do you drive down a residential road at 30 mph or more when, if it wasyour road, you would think it inconsiderate? Do you always hold the door open forpeople behind you? Do you volunteer for an organisation? Common courtesies andcommitments to community warm our hearts and help give our lives purpose. Whatis more, such behaviour is contagious. In the absence of role models though, publicspace is too often filled by those who behave as they please. I believe that, whileincreasing its focus on anti-social behaviour, Poole Council should do more toencourage good citizenship, volunteering and the development of communityorganisations.

Mark Howell was recently elected as a Borough of Poole Councillor in Poole Town ward and isPoole People’s first elected representative. Poole People is seeking candidates to stand in wardsacross Poole in the May 2011 Council elections. To find out more about Poole People, seewww.poolepeople.org.uk

Independence both rewards teenagers and perplexes parents. It’s theone thing that parents have complete control over – so when my mumlet me visit London with friends, I was buzzing. A group of us teamedtogether and planned a trip to see ‘Paramore’ play live at the O2 Arena.Unknown to us, major train and tube works were also planning theirvisit. Assembling our final preparations, we were informed of thedisruptions, causing a seismic change to our plans. We now had toventure across London without the underground and catch railreplacements to and fro’.

After receiving a torrent of swearwords from numerous angst-filledcoach drivers, we were in thecity, travelling on a mystery busroute with our destination(hopefully) at the end. Although itdidn’t run smoothly. We werewarned that the bus had brokenand so disembarked. Stranded onthe streets, we were forced tosearch for a different bus.Eventually we were gazing at theimposing arena – we rushedinside to avoid the cold andgrabbed a 4th row standingposition! The show commenced… and it was worth every penny andsecond – Incredible. Worth the troubles that were about to ensue.Frantically pushing through crowds and diving onto the Waterloo bus, wewere greeted by stand-still traffic and inebriated older men. You can tellthe 90-minute ride across the city was going to be fun.

London Waterloo is one of the few stations where you can run down theplatforms and nobody cares. I noticed this as we sprinted down thestation, just like in the movies. Half asleep on the train home, we got offat Southampton Parkway, expecting the replacement coach back home…which actually left from Southampton Central. Imagine that it’s 2Am.You are stranded, 40 miles from home. Your friend’s work friend drivesyou home at ridiculous speeds, trance music encapsulates your eardrums and your stomach becomes queasy. Moral of the story: Planthoroughly and show your parents you can be independent. Sometimesthe less sensible things are more fun, but always have a back-up.

Don't Replace Your 'Foggy' Double Glazing -Repair It!

* Father And Son Go Green With Amazing New Process For Poole Residents *Dave New has been running his own window company for the last 20 years, but hasrecently found himself replacing broken down double glazing units more often thanever.

After one evening of browsing the Internet, he found a new method which enablesthe repair of these 'foggy' windows instead of doing the initial replacing. The bonus ofthis new method is that it is easier, cheaper and a lot more environmentally friendly.

Get The Fog Out is a process established by Crystal Clear Window Works in Canadaover 5years ago. It allows us to re-engineer the unit to clear the fog and mist whichbuilds up in-between the two panes of glass.

Dave’s son Jamie opted to quit his job to join his dad and took on this venture andbrought it to the Poole area to contribute into help making things greener and moreeconomical for people.

Of course, when you have moisture in between the glass, it contributes to loss ofenergy as moisture is a good conductor of heat transfer, therefore, reducing theeffectiveness of double-glazed windows.

Over 300,000 units have been successfully repaired in North America and now thisprocess is now available in the UK and, of course, Poole so, if you look at it in thelarger perspective, this amazing new process can substantially downsize the amountof landfill councils, housing associations, window companies and ourselves cause bygetting the foggy windows replaced.

So this is our opportunity to act against climate change and global warming. It is alsoa great option at this time where we a looking at some tough economical times. Thisis a great opportunity for people to save money on home improvements on gettingthe fog out rather than having replacement glass, where it also has the benefit ofdoing their bit for the environment at the same time.

Thinking Of ChangingYour Hair Colour?BUT WHICH ONE?

RACY RED? BABY BLONDE?

BEAUTIFUL BRUNETTE? HOW ABOUT BRONDE?

SORRY, WHAT?!

Perhaps you don’t want to go blonde because of the regrowth & upkeep, especially if you arenaturally darkish, but want a change from brunette.

Then BRONDE could be for you. It is a mixture of highlights ranging from caramels, coffees &milk chocolates to sun kissed blondes.

A great example is Jennifer Aniston who though has been much lighter & likewise darker, tends to stay with a lovely mix of varying highlights giving a natural but never boring look.

If your natural base is quite dark then your colourist could lighten it by 1-2 shades beforeadding the highlights. Having lighter shades around the face is flattering & softer also verynatural looking.

So if you want to be not quite blonde yet not quite brunette, Bronde is definitely for you!

The Big FreezeSo what is it this month? What else but the WEATHER! Had to be really didn’t it? No of courseI’m not going to moan about the snow, that is beyond anyone’s control, it’s what’s done about it.And as far as I could see precious little! Did you see a gritter lorry? Or even grit on the roads? Infact did you see any evidence that something, anything had been done to make our roads safer? No neither did I.

Had it been many a year since we last saw snow the councils could be forgiven for not beingadequately prepared, but as it was only a matter of months ago there really isn’t any excuse.Plus the fact it went on day after day with still no measures being taken to improve road safety, beggars belief.

No wait we did have some weather warnings such as - don’t go out unless you really have to. Ithink paying the mortgage and bills would qualify as ‘having to’.Perhaps they should have been more accurate/honest and stated - Go out if you must but you’reon your own, the risk is all yours.

Okay so no help there but why won’t ‘elf n safety’ allow us to help ourselves? For instance iffarmers in rural areas were allowed to shovel snow off the roads with the aid of their tractors etc.these areas  would be much safer and in many cases no longer cut off from the rest of the world! Not too many years ago this used to happen as the farmers were only too happy to oblige thenH&S got involved, telling them they were not allowed.

Or as happens in America and Germany for instance, where everyone is responsible to clear the‘sidewalk’ in front of their house. Naturally when this is done the whole pavement is safe andclear in no time. If we do that here, we are told, and someone slips they can sue. But if they slipon an unattended area there is no recourse! How nuts is that?

Let me think what are the odds of slipping on unattended snow or cleared snow? Which wouldyou rather take your chances on?

We Brits love to talk/ moan about the weather, it’s a national past time. It could be a Mastermindspecialist subject, not meteorology, just general weather winging.

It’s not like we don’t have ‘weather’ in this country, be it snow, sudden heat waves that melttarmac and of course rain by the bucket load. So why is it countries like Greece, Spain in factmost of Europe who have scorching heat for months of the year, still manage to drive on theirroads without car tyres melting in to the surface? Or Scandinavia, Switzerland et al and parts ofAmerica continuing to function with metres of snowfall!

Politicians go on ‘fact finding’ jollies to far flung exotic and or glamorous places, (somehow thesenever take place in Bridlington)  to glean knowledge and information on how these countriescope with adverse weather conditions. All paid for of course by us!  Though hundreds ofthousands of pounds later nothing changes. More than likely it’s too expensive to implement.

So here’s a suggestion to councils far and wide - scrap the trips, thus saving money, Googlewhat it is you want to know and I’m sure you will have more info that you know what to do with.Or even just pick up the phone to said countries and ASK. Then use the money saved to makethe improvements.

How Was It For You?By Bruce Grant-Braham

Former Mayor and also chairman ofPoole Tourism

The recent local election in the Old Town wasrefreshing with candidates focusing on the

importance to the local economy of Tourism.

So in the first of two articles how did Tourism perform in 2010?

Firstly, Poole's incoming tourism is affected by the weather and this theory wasagain proven in 2010.

At the start of the season visitor numbers in the early good weather particularly inJune were substantially up but dropped away during the dodgy summer.

August and September were not as good as previous years. Every (rain!) cloud hasa silver lining and indoor attractions did well in August as visitors took shelter.

Investment by Poole's tourism businesses has been substantial in 2010. RockleyPark led the way with excellent new facilities; Poole Park saw the new "Nautikidz"Mini-Port; Poole Pottery has enhanced its retail offer.

New restaurants have appeared in the form of Fishy Fishy (with its X Factorconnections), Calimero, Brambles and Banana Wharf opening up. The New BeehiveHotel added to Canford Cliffs' accommodation stock too.

On the environment front Poole's parks and beaches won their respective Greenand Blue flags and Elms Lodge won its prestigious Gold Green Tourism award - asdid our own Welcome Centre.

We brought the Rallye Sunseeker to Pooe Quay for the first time and now part of theBritish (car) Rally Championship don't miss its return on the last weekend ofFebruary 2011.

Not all was good. The Barfleur was withdrawn (hopefully temporarily) but thisindicates the wider economic problems of crossing the Channel by ferry - just askDover! We also have a continuing outside drinking difficulty in some locations.

Next month I will make some predictions for the future which from Poole Tourism'sangle has some great opportunities.
