He suggested a solution, “Why don’t we put up a wall of sharp stakes made

from banana tress trunks?” “This could be placed along the shore to protect the

people.” (21) (E) he added.

The King was so impressed and he immediately ordered his men to build the

Section F: Comprehension 1 (10 marks)

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

A few years ago, after a long morning of sightseeing in New York, my

children and I took a breather at Central Park. “Look!” my son said, pointing to

a nearby rubbish bin. That was when we saw our first raccoon. Quite at home

in a big city, he paid us no heed, concentrating only on finding a tasty lunch.

He sorted through a few options before emerging with a wrapped sandwich,

held between his paws.

Satisfied, he jumped down steadily and ambled nonchalantly towards a

spot on the gravel path, less than a metre from where we sat. The children

were fascinated by the raccoon which had entertained them much better than

any museum.

I tried to walk forward to the gravel path but he turned around and gave

us a glance, perhaps as reassurance that we were not about to take his lunch.

With his delicate fingers, he peeled back the layers of plastic wrap until the

half-eaten sandwich was uncovered.

Then he surprised us all. Instead of starting on his food, he turned to a

nearby rain puddle and dipped his hands in a casual air. He rubbed his hands

together underwater for a moment, preened his whiskers and then delicately

picked at his meal.

Section G: Comprehension 2 (10 marks)

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

A Singaporean taxi driver returned $1 million in cash that had been

left behind by a Thai couple in his cab. The money, which was in S$1,000

bills, was inside a black paper bag left on the rear seat.

Taxi driver Mr Sia, 70, had picked up the couple from The Sail

condominium at Marina Bay at around 11.30 a.m. on Monday. After he had

dropped them off at Golden Mile Complex in Beach Road, he proceeded to

look for a parking space so that he could visit a toilet.

5

After returning from the toilet, he noticed a black paper bag on the

right side of the back seat. It contained stacks of S$1,000 notes. Anxious

thoughts raced through his mind. Mr Sia said, “When I saw the money, I

thought, “Trouble is here. What if some other passengers find the money and

keep them? I was sure there was a lot of money in the bag.”

10

Afraid that someone else might get into his taxi, he locked its doors

and drove straight to his taxi company.

“The money is unimportant to me. It doesn’t belong to me, so how

can I keep it?” said Mr Sia, who has been a taxi driver for 31 years. His

colleagues were stunned when he handed over the bag of cash. They

counted the money and realised it was $1 million.

15

At the same time, the Thai couple had contacted the taxi company.

They went to Sin Ming, where Mr Sia was waiting at the lost-and-found

department. To express their gratitude, the couple gave a reward for his

honesty. Mr Sia declined to reveal the amount.

20

Spokesman Ms Tammy Tan said Mr Sia had acted quickly and with

great integrity by returning the money directly. Ms Tan commended Mr Sia

and said, “Finding $1 million in cash is not an everyday affair and in fact, we

wonder how many people would have possibly been tempted by it.”
