PLACEMENT OF PhD THESIS FOR PEER REVIEW Copy of the PhD thesis submitted by Shabir Hussain, Regd. No. 2001-ag-899, will be placed in the Library Department of Agronomy from 07-02-2013 to 13-02-2013. The title of his thesis is “Impact of polyamines and nitrogen application on the water economy of hybrid maize (Zea mays L.)”. PhD THESIS/SYNOPSIS DEFENCE 1. Mr. Muhammad Aon, Regd. No. 2005-ag-2009, PhD student of the Institute of Soil and Environmental Sciences will defend

his synopsis in a seminar at the University level on 09-02-2013 at 10:00 am in the Library of the Institute of Soil and Environmental Sciences. The title of his synopsis is “Nitrogen and phosphorus requirements of maize in biochar amended alkaline calcareous soil”. All the faculty members are requested to attend the presentation.

2. Miss Atifa Masood, Regd. No. 2009-ag-700, a PhD student in the Department of Botany will defend her synopsis on 11-02-2013 at 11:00 am in the seminar room of the Department. The title of her synopsis is “Morpho-physiological and biochemical responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to saline stress”. All interested are cordially invited to attend.

3. Mr. Aamir Shakoor, Regd. No. 2003-ag-2328, a PhD student in the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, UAF. His research title is “Hydrogeologic Assessment of Spatio-temporal Variation in Groundwater Quality and its Impact on Agricultural Productivity”. No. 2011-ag-1339, PhD student, Dept. of Zoology & Fisheries, will deliver a seminar in defense of his PhD synopsis entitled “Dispersal analysis and parentage pelatedness of the rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula Krameri), Blue Rock pigeon (Columba livia domestica) and common myna (acridotheres tristris) using molecular markers from sub-habitats of Faisalabad, Punjab” on 09-02-2013 at 09:30 am in the seminar room, Department of Zoology & Fisheries, UAF. 13. Hafiz Bashir Ahmad, Regd. No. 96-ag-1455. PhD student of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics will defend his PhD synopsis in the Postgraduate Laboratory of the Department on 11-02-2013 at 01:30 pm as required under the rules. The title of his synopsis is “Genetic variability and inheritance pattern of seed oil and yield contributing traits in Brassica oilseeds”. All the teachers and students concerned are requested to attend and contribute towards the improvement of the synopsis.

14. Thesis defense of Mr. Saif-ur-Rehman, Regd. No. 2001-ag-578, PhD scholar, Institute of Microbiology was scheduled to be held on 02-02-2013 at 11:00 am but could not be conducted due to unavailability of the Dean and Director. Thesis defense is therefore rescheduled on 06-02-2013 at 09:00 am in the video conference room UAF. The title of PhD research thesis is “Epidemiology of Foot and mouth disease in sheep and goats in Punjab”. All interested are requested to participate.

16. Ms. Lubna Anjum, Regd. No. 2000-ag-512, PhD student of Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology has successfully defended her PhD thesis on 02-02-2013. The title of her thesis is “Simulation of Salinity Buildup and Corn Response under Irrigation Management Practices using SALTMED Model”.

17. Miss Aasma Tufail, Regd. No. 2005-ag-455 a PhD student, Department of Botany, UAF has successfully defended her synopsis at 10:00 am on 17-11-2012 as required under the rules. During her synopsis defense the members of her supervisory committee have suggested changes in the synopsis title which may please be approved. Original title: Ecotypic variation in differentially adopted ecotypes of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon L.) for salt stress tolerance. Suggested title: Ecotypic adaptations in Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) for salt stress tolerance.

21. Miss Saima Naz, Regd. No. 2006-ag-470, PhD Chemistry student of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has successfully defended her synopsis titled “Development of methodology for extraction, fractionation and biochemical characterization of Hemp (Cannabis sativa, L.)” as required under the rules on 17-01-2013. This topic has been modified with minor alterations in response to suggestions given during synopsis defense as “Downstream approaches for pure biofine chemicals and aroma substances from Cannabis sativa essential oil”.

The title of his thesis was “Studies on biochemical basis of resistance against late blight of potato and its management, through fungicides, bio-fungicides and plant extracts”.
