BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -- The Lincoln Me-

morial men's basketball team has been se-

lected to participate in the inaugural Small

College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic on

November 18-19, 2016 at the Ford Center in

Evansville, Ind., it was announced during a

press conference on Monday.

In celebration of the creation of the Small

College Basketball Hall of Fame, the Hall of

Fame Classic will be hosted in its entirety by

the University of Southern Indiana at the

Ford Center, an 11,000-seat arena that is

home to the NCAA Division I University of

Evansville men's and women's basketball

teams.

Lincoln Memorial is one of six premier

NCAA Division II basketball programs that

has been picked to take part in the first Hall

of Fame Classic along with Bellarmine, Al-

abama-Huntsville, Kentucky Wesleyan,

Florida Southern and Southern Indiana. The

Railsplitters will take on Kentucky Wesleyan

on Friday, November 18 before squaring off

against Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.

"We are incredibly excited and honored to be

among the six teams invited to the inaugural

Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Clas-

sic," LMU head men's basketball coach Josh

Schertz said. "When you look at the field it's

certainly filled with many of the blue blood

programs in all Division II men's basketball,

so for a program like ours to get an opportu-

nity to compete against them is certainly a

privilege. I hope all of our fans will make

plans to be in Evansville the weekend of Nov

18-19, as you will see some terrific basket-

ball all under one roof in one of the nicest

venues in our sport, The Ford Center."

Kentucky Wesleyan is one of the all-time

winningest programs in the history of NCAA

Division II men's hoops, as the Panthers have

won a record eight National Championships

in their storied history, with the most recent

coming in 2001. Prior to the start of the

2015-16 campaign, Kentucky Wesleyan was

ranked seventh in the history of the NCAA

Division II with 1,521 wins. The Panthers

are fifth all-time in winning percentage with

a 65.9 percent mark in the program's 103-

year history.

Alabama-Huntsville has won six of the last

seven Gulf South Conference regular-season

championships, including this year's, which

the Chargers clinched on Saturday with a 73-

63 victory over Mississippi College. UAH

made back-to-back Elite Eight appearances

in 2011 and 2012. Since 2010, the Chargers

are 144-44 with a 76.6 winning percentage.

The Railsplitters have won an unprecedented

three straight South Atlantic Conference reg-

ular-season championships and are off to an

18-0 start in SAC play this season, which is

far and away the best start in league history.

Lincoln Memorial has made five straight ap-

pearances in the NCAA Tournament, won at

least 25 games in five straight seasons and

advanced to the second round of the NCAA

Tournament in each of the past four seasons.

Since 2010, the Railsplitters have the sec-

ond-best winning percentage in the nation

behind only West Liberty.

"I want to commend John McCarthy on his

tireless work to promote small college bas-

ketball and give its players and coaches a

platform to be recognized," Schertz said.

"With all that's going on in Evansville that

weekend it will be a tremendous experience

for our team and with John on board I know

it will be a first class event for all of the fans

and participants."

The SCB Hall of Fame Classic will be the

second weekend of play of the 2016-17 sea-

son for the Railsplitters, who open against

King and Lees-McRae in the SAC vs. Con-

ference Carolinas Challenge the week be-

fore.

The 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

will be held on Thursday, November 17 at

the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. The In-

augural Class of 2016 will consist of 15 in-

ductees and will be announced this summer.

Tickets for both the Hall of Fame ceremony

and the Hall of Fame Classic games can be

purchased online at www.HoFClassic.com.

In 1966, the opening round of the 49th

District featured a doubleheader between old

rivals Annville and Oneida followed by a

tipoff between Brodhead and Livingston.

After the opening round games were com-

pleted, Annville had advanced with a 72-52

win over Oneida, while Brodhead slipped

past Livingston 58-49.

In Harlan County, the Harlan Green

Dragons rolled over Loyall 73-45 in first

round action in the 52nd. Major had 14 to

lead Harlan while Sergeant also had 14 for

Loyall. The Dragons moved on to the dis-

trict semis where they would take on Cum-

berland. In the other half of the 52nd District

bracket, Evarts was going for a season sweep

of Lynch, but Ed Miracle’s Lynch Bulldogs

beat Evarts for the first time all season, 62-

59 in overtime. In the next game, Harlan

used a big third quarter to break open a close

game against Cumberland in the semis. Up

by only two at the half, the Dragons pulled

away and went on to a 64-51 win. All five

Harlan players scored in double figures. Pil-

lion’s 15 was tops. Robinette had 18 for

Cumberland.

Lynch next needed to get past Hall in the

semis to advance to the title game against

Harlan and they almost didn’t get there.

Lynch finally prevailed 72-69 but Hall gave

them fits as Clem tossed in 22 for the Game-

cocks in the loss. Brown had 26 to help

Lynch to the win.

At Pineville in the 51st District at Bell

County, there were first round games be-

tween Pineville and Bell County followed by

Middlesboro vs. Red Bird. Pineville was also

going for a season sweep of Bell County, but

like Evarts, lost to their opponent for the first

time as the Bobcats prevailed by three and

advanced to the second round. B e l l

would go on to defeat Henderson Settlement

in the next round as Bobby Schultz had 18

and Arnold Browning 11 and Bell County

took care of the Bears 56-37. Doug Ham-

montree was the leading scorer for the Bears

with eight.

Middlesboro moved on as well with a

win over Red Bird. That sent the Yellow

Jackets to a semifinal match against Lone

Jack, another team that held a 2-0 edge over

their opponent. However, the Yellow Jackets

couldn’t duplicate the success of those other

two-time losers and Lone Jack advanced to

the district championship game against Bell

County with a 60-48 win over Middlesboro.

Larry Elliott led four Mustangs in double fig-

ures with his 15 points. Rodney Buckner

and Doug Williams led Middlesboro with 15

and 11 respectively as Coach Shirley

Goodin’s Mustangs jumped on top 18-2 after

one quarter and held off the Yellow Jackets

the rest of the way.

In the 51st championship game, the

Bobcats took the title with a 51-45 decision

over the Mustangs in a game that went back

and forth to the end. Schultz again led Bell

County, this time with 18. Roop and

Queener had 13 apiece for Lone Jack.

Wrapping up the 50th District, Curley

Selvy had 24 in the championship game for

Corbin, but it wasn’t enough as Terry Mills

tossed in 19 and led Knox Central past the

Redhounds 59-42.

Named to the 51st District All Tourna-

ment Team were:

Bell County - Bobby Schultz, Arnold

Browning and Johhny Aldridge

Lone Jack - Johnny Centers, Bill Roop

and Larry Elliott

Pineville - David Asher, Lee Bishop and

Dusty Culton

Henderson Settlement - Doug Hammon-

tree and Thomas Bostic

Middlesboro - Doug Williams

So, the eight team field for the 13th Re-

gion Tournament at Whitley County was set

with Clay County and Brodhead represent-

ing the 49th District, Knox Central and

Corbin the 50th District, Bell County and

Lone Jack the 51st District and Lynch and

Harlan the 52nd District.

In an unseeded draw, Clay County drew

Lone Jack (18-8), Brodhead got Knox Cen-

tral (22-5), Bell County’s (15-12) opponent

would be Harlan (15-14) and Lynch (18-7)

would take on Corbin.

In an unusual twist, the four officials

working the tournament would all be from

London as Jack Bruner, Earl Hill, Lawrence

Kuhl and Roy Bowling were chosen.

In the first round of the region, Clay

County knocked off Lone Jack in overtime

and Knox Central eliminated Brodhead.

Harlan, coached by George Francis, rolled

over Bell County 79-59. Bob Muse had 22

to lead the Green Dragons. Clarence Majors

added 17. Bobby Shultz had 20 and David

Green 12 for the Bobcats. In the last first

round game, Corbin knocked off Lynch in a

close one 63-58 behind 25 points from Mike

Storm and 15 from Charles Selvy. Brown

had 20 to lead Lynch in defeat.

In the semifinal round, Knox Central got

19 from Noble Potter and routed Clay

County 79-54. Jimmy Burns tossed in 17 to

lead Clay County. Meanwhile, in the lower

bracket semi, Harlan eliminated Corbin 68-

57 behind 25 points from Mike Pillion.

Alvie Bible had 21 to pace the Redhounds.

Corbin outscored the Green Dragons from

the field, but Harlan made 24 of 34 at the

free throw line in the win.

The Panthers would go on to win the

13th Region title game over the Green Drag-

ons the following night to successfully de-

fend their regional title.

The Southeastern Kentucky Conference

basketball champion in 1966 was London.

The Tigers went 11-1 in conference play.

Hazel Green and Knox Central each went 7-

1, Pineville 14-3, while Lone Jack finished

fifth. The Dickinson rating system was used

to determine the champion.

Backwards Bounce: 1966 was once again The Year of the Panther

For some reason my mind is lingering on one

series of hunts. I was hunting in the Midwest

and had done my homework as to where I

needed to place my stand. I knew I was in a

perfect travel route and the trail camera had

confirmed that with pictures of some nice

bucks. I put up my tree stand weeks before I

was to actually hunt. Everything seemed per-

fect. As time got closer, the landowner had

gotten some good pictures from another lo-

cation where several bucks were checking a

large scrape. Even though I toyed with the

idea of moving, I was determined to stick

with my original plan. Day after day I

manned my tree stand with perseverance.

And I did see a few deer each day, along with

a couple of decent bucks, but nothing like I

had hoped for. Each day my mind wondered

to the other area, but again I put my faith in

my consistency, perseverance, faithfulness,

and over-all sincerity. On the last full day of

the hunt I decided to move. It was the right

thing to do. It was just two days too late.

All my life I have heard the saying,

“The road to hell is paved with good inten-

tions.” I understood the phrase but until re-

cently I don’t think it every really sunk in. I

am hard pressed to think of a more apropos

statement when it comes to the state of reli-

gion today. If pluralism is the new religion,

sincerity is her greatest commandment. It

has trumped truth as the most important

characteristic of her followers. It really does-

n’t matter what one believes or even what

one practices as long as he is sincere in the

pursuit. Of course, that sincerity must ex-

press itself in kindness and tolerance, but if

these three are primary, everything else is

secondary – or even unimportant.

No matter how much I wanted to see

a deer in my initial tree stand, the truth was,

the deer were somewhere else. No matter

how sincere I was in arriving early, persever-

ing, and even begging God to bless me be-

cause I was such a good person, the deer

were in another location. No matter how

much I washed down in scent killer or no

matter how many places I hung my deer at-

tractant, the truth was, the deer were not

where I was. On the other hand, I could have

cussed my land owner, kicked the dog, threw

trash out of my pick-up, and disowned my

faith; but if I would have moved to where the

deer were, I might have not had to write this

article. My point is this; truth is truth whether

it comes from a jerk or from a saint. And

while most religions espouse morality and

the virtues of goodness and kindness, these

do not equate to whether what we believe is

true or not. I can be sincere but sincerely

wrong. Find what is true first and then sin-

cerely follow it. Otherwise, you really may

be paving the road to hell with your good in-

tentions. [email protected]

Outdoor Truths

The Shelby County Rockets, paced by

future UK standout Mike Casey, outran

Louisville Male 62-57 in the 1966 Kentucky

State High School Basketball Tournament

championship game at Freedom Hall in

Louisville to win the ‘66 boys state title.

Shelby County outshot (48% to

30%) and outrebounded the Purples, two

stats that usually are the difference between

winning and losing. Casey led all scorers in

the game with 23 points. Willie Woods

paced Male with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The 1966 All-State Tournament Team

was made up of Casey and Bill Busey of

Shelby County, Ted Rose and Eugene Smith

of Male, Knox Central’s Terry Mills, Haz-

ard’s Chester Rose, Ron Gathright from

Thomas Jefferson, Ricky Hall of McDowell,

Ralph Mayes from Central City and Toke

Coleman from Harrison County.

13th Region representative Knox Cen-

tral wasn’t given much of a chance by the

oddsmakers to stay in Louisville for very

long since they had the misfortune to draw

one of the favorites, Shelby County, as a first

round opponent. But the Panthers came

within a point of pulling a major upset,

falling by just one point, 71-70, to the even-

tual state champ. Mountain sharpshooter

Terry Mills fired in 32 for the Panthers,

who’s fourth quarter rally fell just one point

shy of victory. Mike Casey had 20 to lead

Shelby County.

Louisville Male was also one of the fa-

vorites to win the 1966 championship. How-

ever, the Purples also had their hands full in

first round action. Their opponent, Hazel

Green, who at that time was also a member

of the Southeastern Kentucky Conference

(SEKC), actually led 33-32 in the third quar-

ter before Male was finally able to pull away

for a 73-59 win. Eugene Smith had 21 for

Male. Richard Tuttle led Hazel Green with

20.
