SPAY DAY Fundraiser helps Paws Rescue reduce homeless litters all year long: Spay-Neuter Awareness Month is celebrated each February and Paws

Rescue has recognized the event for the past 10 years as it is such an important component of the no-kill equation. “We are a rescue organization and work hard to take in homeless dogs and cats and find permanent homes for them,” Leigh Conerly, Paws Rescue president, said. “However, rescue and adoption alone will not solve the homeless pet problem,” she said. “Rescue and adoption are only part of the solution and we absolutely must have a strong spay-neuter program in addition to the other efforts in order to decrease the number of homeless pets in our community.”

In addition to working to educate pet owners of the importance of spaying and neutering, ensuring feral cat colonies are fixed and assisting low-income, elderly and disabled residents of Vicksburg-Warren County get their pets fixed during Spay-Neuter Awareness Month, Paws Rescue always conducts a fundraiser to raise money for this important initiative. “This year, since it was our 10 year anniversary, we set a goal to raise $10,000 for our spay-neuter program,” Conerly said. “That is a lot of money but it doesn’t go as far as you might think and we usually spend that much on our spay-neuter efforts every six months,” she said. “Although our goal was lofty, the community really came through for us and for the homeless dogs and cats. Paws Rescue -- Pets of the Month

Phillip Dilys Phillip is an incredible dog with a sad beginning but who has shown remarkable

resiliency, love and grace to make a brand new, happy life for himself! Phillip was

named after the man who found him at a gas station. Phillip was seriously injured with a

severe burn down his back and was simply begging anyone to help him. Our gentleman

hero, Phillip, gave him some food but after he left, he just couldn't stop thinking of this

poor guy and went back for him and called Paws Rescue for help. Although we never

could determine exactly how Phillip came to have the injuries he did, all that really

matters is that he was rescued, treated for his injuries and received lots of care, love

and attention. He has healed physically and emotionally and is ready for a loving forever

home of his very own. Paws Rescue also treated Phillip for heartworms and ensured he

was vaccinated and neutered. If you'd like to give Phillip a second chance at love and

happiness by providing him with a permanent home, contact Paws Rescue for

information about adoption.

Dilys is a sweet, beauty and was found with a colony of feral cats that were being fixed

and returned to their colony. The Paws Rescue volunteer couldn't bear to leave her

behind since she was not totally feral and still young, Dilys is now approximately nine

months old. She is grey and black striped with calico patches. She is a funny, playful girl

and people, cat and dog friendly. This little girl loves to snuggle in bed and get petted.

She is a beautiful little lady ready for her forever home.

For more information about adopting Phillip, Dilys or any other Paws Rescue pet,

contact Leigh at [email protected] or phone 601-529-1535. All pets

are vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The adoption fee for cats and

kittens is $25.00 and for dogs and puppies the adoption fee is $100.00. Paws Rescue

conducts home visits and checks veterinarian references before finalizing all adoptions.

Annie Rescue by Paws Rescue in 2004

Adopted in 2005 and again in 2014

2004 2014

Annie, a Pekingese, came to Paws Rescue in August 2004 from the Vicksburg Pound. She had been kept outside most of her life until her owner decided he didn’t even have time for that any longer and dumped her at the pound. Because Annie had never been properly cared for, her long coat was matted and she had fleas and heartworms. After a good bath and nail trim, and a dose of Frontline, Annie was transformed into the beauty you see in the first photo. Paws Rescue made sure she was treated for heartworms and took care of a few other medical issues and found her the perfect home. She had a new mama that doted on her every minute of the day. She truly lived in the lap of luxury and spent the next 10 years being a happy, faithful companion who brought a lot of love and joy to her caregiver. Unfortunately, Annie’s adoptive mom passed away in April 2014. Although age and losing her mom has taken its toll on sweet Annie (she suffers from heart issues and bouts of pancreatitis) she is still the sweet (but stubborn!) little dog rescued by Paws Rescue 10 years ago. As evident in the second photo, Annie is still simply gorgeous and she still enjoys her daily walks and meeting new people and dogs. The Paws Rescue board member who first pulled Annie from the pound and cared for her during her heartworm treatment and until she was adopted developed a deep bond with her and visited her frequently over the past 10 years. She has adopted Annie to ensure she is able to continue to get the medical care she needs while enjoying her golden years!

Volunteer Spotlight: Feleisha Moses

The Moses family

Name and Hometown: Feleisha Moses, Vicksburg, MS Occupation: Office Manager Hobbies: Spending time with my family, daughters, pets and friends and doing anything outside. Pets: Boxer/Beagle mix, Honey, 5 years old, Cat, Lily, 3 years old; Baby Cybes 3 years old. Why do you volunteer for Paws Rescue: Because we adopted Honey from Paws several

years ago and found out what a dedicated and caring organization it was. Fostering is our small way of helping and gives us time with lots of wonderful animals. We truly enjoy being a part of it. What you do for Paws Rescue: Foster.

Most memorable volunteer experience with Paws Rescue: Fostering Ilean was the best! Seeing her transformation from how scared and skittish she was just limping around with the loss of one of her front legs then each day she got more and more sociable with our pets, our family and friends. We miss her and talk about her often. Is there anything else you’d like readers to know: Everything helps: adopt, foster, donate,

volunteer and most of all spay/neuter!

The Face of Rescue All of the dogs and cats rescued by Paws Rescue are in need of some kind of assistance. Some have

simply wandered away from home and need a little help reconnecting with owners. Others need to be

rehomed when their families can no longer care for them for various reasons. And many have been

abused, neglected or simply on their own for so long they are sick, starving and sometimes suffering

greatly from injuries and illnesses. Regardless of their condition or circumstances, they ALL matter to

Paws Rescue board members, volunteers and supporters, and we do whatever we need to do to save

them. Many just need some love, patience and attention to heal a broken soul. Others need extensive

medical care. Sadly, the majority need both. Paws Rescue is committed to saving and healing both the

visible and invisible scars of misery these helpless animals endure. Please look within your heart and

help our efforts. There are numerous ways to assist. Financial donations are always in need for

veterinarian care of our rescues. Donations of dry dog and cat food help us feed not only our rescued

pets, but feral cat colonies and we also share food with those who are in need. By giving food to those

who are having a bit of a hard time, more dogs and cats are able to stay with the families who love them.

Volunteering to help with fundraising events, transport and administrative help, as well as sharing our

animal stories through your social media pages broadens our reach and ability to better communicate

our mission and needs. Fostering a pet in need allows us to save one more. And adopting a rescued pet

allows us to save two more – the one who finally found the perfect home and the one who will now have

a foster home because of the adoption.

Meet Sid

Sid Before and During Treatment

This poor baby was found by a guy who at first couldn't even tell what he was when he first saw him. He

stopped picked him up and noticed that he had a fish hook in his mouth, was starving and had no hair.

He took him to the vet for help, then they called Paws Rescue for help. He is a young pup and still has a

severe case of heartworms. He is being treated for demodetic mange and he was treated for every

intestinal worm that he could possibly have. But the great news is he can fully recover from all of these

things with proper medical care and love, and Paws Rescue is getting him the care he so desperately

needs! So we have started to get him on his way of being the beautiful boy we know he'll be soon. He is

so sweet and loving. He rolls over to have his belly rubbed! If you would like to contribute to his medical

expenses please contact [email protected] or 601-636-9410. Also direct payments can be

made to our vet Animal Medical clinic in his name!

UPCOMING EVENTS & Other Paws Rescue Information:

Paws Rescue’s 10th Anniversary: Paws Rescue is celebrating its10th year anniversary

this year! Stay tuned for our year-long life-saving celebration event schedule!

Dry Cat Food Desperately Needed: Paws Rescue is currently caring for several extremely large feral cat colonies. All of the cats have been vaccinated and have also been or soon will be spayed and neutered to ensure the colonies don’t get any larger, but we are in desperate need of dry cat food to feed all of these untamed furries. If you can donate a bag on a monthly basis or even donate just one bag, these outdoor cats and Paws Rescue caretakers would surely appreciate it. For more information or to drop off or have someone pick up cat food, contact Leigh at 601-529-1535 or Dianne at 601-883-9913. Homes/barns needed for outdoor cats: A feral cat will keep your barn rodent free for

the price of daily cat food, and you'll be helping to save a life! We have several beautiful, healthy, neutered and vaccinated feral cats that are looking for outdoor homes with a barn, shed, or other shelter. If you would like to adopt a barn cat (or several) e-mail us at Leigh.pawsrescuepets@org or call 601-529-1535.
