Pastor’s Pen Dear St. Martin of Tours Parishioners, I recently learned about a mystic of the Catholic Church, Maria Simma. Born on Feb-ruary 2, 1915, she lived her entire life in Sonntag, Austria, until her death on March 6, 2004. From a young age, Maria received many visions from the other side. But it was when she was in her mid-20s that her particular calling became clear: To teach the modern world about the existence of Purgatory, and the importance of praying for souls who have died. From the website http://www.mysticsofthechurch.com: “In 1940 came the first visit from a Holy Soul (also called a “Poor Soul,” a soul in Pur-gatory). The Holy Soul appeared to her in a vision one night. He was pacing back and forth in her bedroom…. Confused, she called out to him and said ‘Who are you?’ … ‘How did you get in here?’ … he gave no response and as she reached out to touch him he disappeared…. “The next day she immediately went to see her parish priest, Fr. Alfons Matt, to tell him all that had happened….‘It could be a Poor Soul from Purgatory. If such a thing should ever happen again, do not say ‘Who are you?’ but say ‘What is it that you need from me?’ “The next night the man suddenly appeared again, once again pacing back and forth. This time Maria immediately asked ‘What is it that you need from me?’ The man sud-denly stopped, turned towards her and replied ‘Please have three Holy Masses said for my intentions and then I will be delivered.’ And then he immediately disappeared….”

1. The Holy Souls repeatedly told Maria that the greatest help for them is the offering of Holy Mass. Next to the Mass, the Rosary. Any sacrifice we make, even the smallest ones, greatly lessen their sufferings and time in Purgatory.

2. They usually appear in their normal clothes, the ones they most often wore during their lifetime, and they appear looking as they did in the prime of their life.

3. There are children in purgatory, but their Purgatory is normally not long or painful.

4. There are many levels in Purgatory. The lower regions of Purgatory are the most difficult and the most purifying. These lower places are places of great mercy, because these are reserved for souls whose mortal sins have not been forgiven in Confession. By right, they should have gone to Hell, but often due to the prayers of others they have been saved.

5. As each soul makes reparation for the sins committed against God and their fellow man, they slowly make progress to the higher levels of Purgatory.

Maria tells us that the greatest complaint of the Holy Souls is how they are almost com-pletely abandoned by their family and loved ones. They complain because so few prayers are ever offered up for them, yet prayer is what they need the most! All the memorials, celebrations, and eulogies done in their honor do nothing for them. What they need are prayers, sacrifices, and most especially the offering of the Mass. What I have learned from Maria Simma is this: Never forget the souls of loved ones who have died! Pray for them! Offer sacrifices for them! Have Masses said for them! This is how you can continue to love them! Then, when the souls of your loved ones get to Heaven, they will return the favor of your love: They will intercede for you pow-erfully. In Christ,

The Prayer of St. Gertrude, below, is one of the most famous of the prayers for souls in purgatory. St. Gertrude the Great was a Benedictine nun and mystic who lived in the 13th century. According to tradition, our Lord promised her that 1000 souls would be released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly.

Dash’s den Dear Humans, I told Daddy I got tired of advertising for the 80th Anniversary Pictorial Directory, so I asked him if I could help him any other way. He cocked his head to the side just like I do when I’m thinking and he said to me, “How are you with designing and maintaining a website?”

Whooowooow, me? A web-side? You need to ask a spider to do that! I’m just a dog. WOOF!

“Ok, well what about figuring out how to do integrate our sound system with the iPAD that I use to video my homilies? I had to stop recording them because the sound was too muffled.”

Daddy, I have no idea what you mean by ‘in-tha-grate.’ I think I stuck my nose through the grates in the backyard and something bit me once. BARK!

“Then, may I use your weekly column to ask our parishioners if there is someone out there who can help with either of these problems? I don’t want to spend money to do these things, I’m try-ing to tighten up our budget.”

Ok, you can most certainly use my column. I know you need help. I can tell you need a lot of help!

“Dash, what do you mean? How do you know that?”

It’s because you don’t play with me as much as you used to because you’re so busy. I’ve missed you, Daddy. Can you please play with me?
