2016-2017 OUA Championship Result: 4th

For a second consecutive year, the Gryphons varsity figure skating team finished fourth at the OUA Championships. The 2017 OUA Championships took

place in Niagara Falls and were hosted by Brock with a total of nine schools competing. Overall the Gryphons reached the podium a total of seven times

out of 14 events at the two-day Championships, including a pair of gold medal performances. Kelsey Sobkowich and Leeann Duncan teamed to capture

gold in the Women’s Sr. Similar Pairs, while the other Gryphon gold medal came in the Gold Creative Skating Skills with the quartet of Jade Marrow,

Claire Hughes, Laura Lourenco and Andrew McDonald earning top spot on the podium. Claire Hughes took home the most hardware during the

championships, reaching the podium on three separate occasions, including a bronze in Women’s Sr. Silver Solo Dance.

The figure skating team finished fourth at the OUA Championships hosted by Toronto. Overall the Gryphons reached the podium a total of six times out

of 14 events at the two-day Championships. Heading into the final synchro event of the day the Gryphons were in bronze medal contention with a slim

three-point lead over the fourth place team. Despite the fact the Gryphons produced a season-high score in synchro they were edged-out by the surging

McMaster team who took gold in that event and the overall team bronze. In total the Gryphons tallied four silver medals and two bronze medals at the

Championships. Claire Hughes stood out for the Gryphons earning four medals. The sophomore picked up two silvers in senior solo dance and junior

similar dance with partner Katie Graham and then two bronze medals in the pairs fours and rhythm dance events.

2014-2015 OUA Championship Result: Silver medalists

In 2015 the Gryphons played host to the OUA Figure Skating Championships and gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about by taking home a silver

medal after finishing 2nd in the overall team standings. The Western Mustangs took home the OUA title for the fourth time in the last five years, while

Ryerson finished three points behind Guelph in third. During the two-day competition, the Gryphons reached the podium in a total of six events and

captured the gold medal in the following: Open Men’s STARSkate (Francis Adamo), Pairs Four (Kelsey Sobkowich, Leeann Duncan, Mackenzie Wilson,

Julia Cenedese) and Senior Similar Pairs (Kelsey Sobkowich, Leeann Duncan).

A duo of Gryphons (Kelsey Sobkowich and Leeann Duncan) earned recognition as OUA All-Stars in two events while Julia Cenedese and Mackenzie

Wilson were also OUA All-Stars. Leeann Duncan took home the most medals from an individual standpoint, as she was able to reach the podium a total

of three times (gold in Senior Similar Pairs and Pairs Four, as well as silver in Gold STARSkate).

2013-2014 OUA Championship Result: OUA Gold Medalists

The figure skating team won the banner this year at the OUA Championships. The Gryphons dethroned the three-time reigning champion, Western

Mustangs, to capture the overall team gold medal, finishing with a total 105 points, a dominating lead over second place (82 points).

Over the two-day championship, the team won 13-of-14 medals including five gold, six silver and two bronze.

The Gryphons captured gold in five different events. Rookie pair Kelsey Sobkowich and Leeann Duncan became OUA all-stars, skating to a gold

medal in the senior similar pairs event. Graduating veteran Amanda Sproule and partner Chelsea Mulvale claimed top spot in the intermediate similar

pairs. Rebecca Wong claimed OUA all-star status in the senior silver solo dance. Duncan, Sobkowich and Sproule earned their second gold medals of

the championship with Anjuli Dabydeen in the pair’s fours event, also earning them OUA all-star status. Veteran Francis Adamo captured OUA gold

in the men’s event.

Silver medals were handed out to Danielle Rankie and Kristen Trottier (junior silver similar dance); Kelsey Shropshire and Victoria Ambrose (senior

silver similar dance event); Dabydeen (gold freeskate); Sproule (senior silver freeskate); Wong and Meagan MacDonald (creative dance) and the meet

concluded with the synchro team winning silver. Two bronze medals went to Sobkowich in the short program and MacDonald, Ambrose, Shropshire,

and Wong in the bronze rhythm dance event. Janet Gibson was awarded Coach of the Year.

The figure skating team finished fifth at the OUA Championships hosted by Queen’s. Overall, the Gryphons captured a total of five medals at the

Championships. The team was led by a gold medal performance from Pairs Fours skaters Christina Kucava (Guelph, Ont.), Maya Goldman (Aurora,

Ont.), Anjuli Dabydeen (Oakville, Ont.) and Amanda Sproule (Keswick, Ont.) who were each named OUA All-Stars. Amanda Sproule also earned a

silver medal in the Senior Silver Free Skate Event. Rounding out the OUA medal performances was Francis Adamo (Guelph, Ont.) (2nd, Men’s Open),

The University of Guelph Gryphons figure skating team finished third at the OUA Championships with a score of 63 points, hosted by the Western

Mustangs in London.

The Gryphons finished with a total of seven medals at the Championships. The all-rookie bronze rhythm team of Lauren Raithby (Stouffville,

ON), Victoria Ambrose (Keswick, ON), Holly Linde (Hepworth, ON) and Kelsey Shropshire (Toronto, ON) won gold in the Bronze Rhythm Dance

event and were awarded OUA All-Star status. Guelph’s synchronized team also won a gold medal after a flawless routine.

Guelph earned a silver medal from Amanda Sproule (Keswick, ON) and Rebecca Wong (Stoney Creek, ON) in the Intermediate Similar Pairs event. The

team of four free skaters including team captain Christine Kucava (Guelph, ON), Theresa Mailling (Mississauga, ON), Amanda Sproule and Maya

Goldman (Aurora, ON) skated a near perfect program to capture the silver medal in the Pairs Fours event. Christine Kucava and partner Maya Goldman

put a fabulous Gold Creative Program together to capture the silver medal in that event. Rookie Holly Linde and second year skater Sarah

Shepherd (London, ON) paired up to place third and take the bronze medal in the Senior Silver Similar Dance event. Francis Adamo (Guelph, ON) skated

his way to a third place finish in the men’s Open Free Skate event.

2010-2011 Championship Results: OUA Silver Medalists

The Gryphons brought home a silver medal from the OUA Championship, following four gold, two silver and two bronze medal performances. Guelph

finished the competition with a final score of 80 points, which was not enough to overcome the Western Mustangs who captured gold with 87 total

points.

Winning gold at the championships were Ariel Porty (Guelph, Ont.) and Laura Barbison (Brampton, Ont.) in the Senior Silver Similar Dance event,

adding 10 points to the Gryphon scoreboard. Both Porty and Barbison were named OUA all-stars. Rookie teammates Lillian Rieck (Airdrie, Alta.) and

Amanda Sproule (Keswick, Ont.) captured gold medals for their Intermediate Similar Free Skate Pair event. Lauren Black (Peterborough, Ont.), Laura

Stratton (Milton, Ont.), Christine Kucava (Guelph, Ont.), and Krista Ricciatti (Guelph, Ont.) took home gold with their four’s event and earned OUA all-

star recognition.

As for silver, Rebecca Wilkes (Toronto, Ont.) took one home for her Open Solo Dance, and Sandra McCubbin (Barrie, Ont.), Ariel Porty, Lauren

Barbison and Rebecca Wilkes captured silver for their Bronze Rhythm Dance.

McCubbin also captured a bronze for her Senior Silver Solo Dance, along with another bronze with partner Rebecca Wong (Stoney Creek, Ont.) for their

Junior Silver Similar Dance. Head Coach Janet Gibson was named Coach of the Year for the third time in four years with the Gryphons.

2009-2010 Championship Result: OUA Gold Medalists

Guelph captured the OUA Championship title for the second straight season following an eight medal performance at the finals. It was a comeback of

sorts for the Gryphons, after Guelph skaters were golden in the final two events of the competition including the synchro team event. Guelph finished the

competition with 78 points, eight more than the silver medalist Western.

Winning gold at the championships were Krista Ricciatti (Guelph, ON) and Tessa Mailling (Mississauga, ON) in senior similar pairs; Laura Barbison

(Brampton, ON) and Ariel Porty (Guelph, ON) won gold in senior silver similar dance and Rebecca Wilkes (Toronto, ON) and Christine Kucava

2008-2009 The Women’s Figure Skating team captured the 2009 OUA Championship title, hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Gryphons led the

championships from start to finish, capturing only their second OUA team title (1993-94). Guelph’s All-Star trio of Ariel Porty (Guelph, ON), Sandra

McCubbin (Barrie, ON) and Laura Barbison (Brampton, ON) led the way for the Gryphons. Porty was golden in the Open Solo Dance and partnered with

Barbison to capture a second gold in the Senior Silver Similar Dance category. Barbison, Porty, McCubbin and Caitlin McCann (Barrie, ON) again stood

atop the podium in the Bronze Rhythm Dance Fours. McCubbin claimed a second gold in the Senior Silver Solo Dance as did teammate Charlotte

Drewett (Cambridge, ON) in the Senior Silver Ladies event. Four Gryphons were named as OUA All-Stars including Barbison, Drewett, McCubbin and

Porty.

2007-2008 The Figure Skating team earned one of their highest-ever finishes with a team silver medal at the 2008 OUA Championships with 75 points, hosted by

the University of Guelph. Leading the team was fourth-year Sarina Tsai (Toronto, Ont.) with a gold medal performance in the Open Solo Dance and a

silver medal in her Short Program. Fourth-year Lindsay Webb (Thamesford, Ont.) and second-year partner Lindsay Dow (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also had

an outstanding championship earning a gold medal in the Intermediate Similar Pairs. In addition, Webb picked up another medal with a bronze medal

performance in her Senior Silver Free Skate. Rookie Sandra McCubbin received silver in the Senior Silver Solo Dance and a bronze in the Senior Silver

Similar Dance. Head coach Janet Gibson was awarded Coach of the Year honours and Sarina Tsai was named an OUA All-Star.

Leading the team was Lindsay Webb who capped off her varsity season with a bronze medal finish in the Silver Free Skate event. The third-year student

completed a great season bringing home a bronze and silver medal from the Waterloo competition and a bronze medal from the Queen’s Invitational.

2005-2006 The Gryphons finished in 7th position at the OUA Figure Skating Championships at Brock University with 24 points. The duo of Sarina Tsai and Andrea

2004-2005 The Gryphons had many setbacks including an ankle injury and a number of ill skaters, but they pulled it together and skated to an 8th place finish

overall at the OUA Championships. Some highlights included a 1st place finish in the Pairs Four event by the quartet of Heather Fotherby, Megan

Douglas, Melissa Cotesta and Liz Winger. Rookie Oksana Pyzik's debut performance in the Short Program landed a beautiful triple double

combination for a 2nd place finish. Jane Brayford was OUA Competitor of the Year.

2003-2004 At the OUA Championships, the Gryphons had personal best skates in almost every event placing 6th overall. The Gryphs excelled in the Similar

Pairs events: the Intermediate Pair of Thea Watson and Nicole Paquette placed 3rd and the Senior Pair of Heather Fotherby and Megan Douglas came

2nd which added 12 points to the team total. Sarina Tsai placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the Gold Freeskate and Gold Dance to earn 8 points for the

team. In the Synchronized event, the Gryphons tied Western for 2nd place. The majority of the skaters will be back for another season.

2002-2003 The Gryphons finished on a high note in 5th place at the OUA Championships. Some highlights include a 2nd place result for Wendy Taylor in the

Senior Silver Solo Dance; a 3rd place finish in the Junior Silver Similar Dance by the duo of Wendy Taylor and Andrea Switzer and a 3rd place finish

in the Synchro event. Cara Emms, Jane Brayford, Brooke Johannes and Meghan Brighten combined for a 4th place in the Bronze Rhythm Dance

event. Nikki Brady skated to a 4th place finish in the Gold Solo Dance. Other 4th place finishes went to Jenn Wood in the Senior Bronze Singles and

the Senior Similar Pairs skated by Melissa Cotesta and Brittany Barr. Heather Fotherby finished 5th in the Short Program.

2001-2002 The Gryphon Figure Skaters accomplished their goal of 5th place at the OUA Championships at Western. This was an excellent accomplishment for

such a young team. Notable performances include that of: Becky Miklos’ personal best for 3rd place in the Junior Silver Freeskate event which

earned the team 5 points and Melissa Cotesta and Lisa Pinelli had an outstanding skate for 2nd place in the Senior Similar Pairs event which earned

the team 7 points. In the Synchronized event, the Gryphons took 2nd place earning the team 10 points which moved them up to 5th overall after

sitting in 6th place for the majority of the competition. The Gryphons were also presented with the inaugural OUA Team Spirit Award. They were

voted the winners by every university that participated in OUA’s for their outstanding sportsmanship and supportive cheering for every team to take

the ice.

2000-2001 At the OUA Figure Skating Championship hosted by the University of Guelph, the Gryphs captured the bronze and were only one point shy of

runner up, Waterloo. Every Gryphon skater improved throughout the course of the season whether they moved up in their standings or skated a

personal best. Dance team captain, Erin Jacobs, placed in the top 2 in all 6 of the events that she competed in contributing 53 points to the Gryphons

point total of 75. Rookie, Jill Nealson, combined with Jacobs for two firsts and had 2 second place finishes as well. Both individuals were OUA All

Stars as a result of their placings. The synchronized team that has 16 Gryphons performing on the ice at the same time finished 2nd.

1999-2000 At the OUA Championships in Kingston, the Figure Skaters placed 4th overall, only 2 points out of third. Erin Jacobs and Nadine Hammoud were

key performers for the Gryphons as they both earned the team 10 points apiece in their individual events. Jacobs seized 1st place in Open Solo

Dance while Hammoud grabbed a 1st in Senior Solo Dance and as a result earned OUA All Star honours. Jacobs also paired up with Nicole Jeffrey

for 2nd place in Dance Variation and combined with Karen Callahan in Senior Similar Dance for a 3rd. Karin Lee and Katherine Lundvall came 2nd

in Senior Similar Pairs while Sara Dart, Hammoud, Lee and Lundvall combined for a 3rd place result in Pairs Four Free Skate.

1997-1998 The Figure Skating Team maintained its high standard of performance at the OUA Championships as the team placed second behind Queen’s

University. Lisa Vandewater won a gold medal in the Senior Solo Dance and teamed with Jenn Scott for a gold in the Intermediate Similar Dance.

Other first place finishes went to Sara Dart in the Senior A Singles and Lesley-Ann Morris in the Open Singles. The OSP Team of Melissa Allin,

Karen Callahan, Kathryn Clarke and Valerie Gilmore also captured a gold medal. All of the above individuals earned OUA All Star status.

1994-1995 The defending OWIAA champion Gryphons captured the bronze medal at the OWIAA Figure Skating Championships hosted at the University of

Guelph. This team had a number of new faces, but missed the silver by just two points. Miriam Belosic was an OWIAA All Star as she captured the

gold medal in the Open Singles while Katy MacDonald and Kim Rose won the gold in the Senior Similar Pairs. Veronica Austen, Janet Sunohara,

Jennifer Cashen and Kathryn Clarke ere silver medallists in the OSP - Vienese Waltz. Sherri Armstrong, Meredith Young, MacDonald and Rose

placed second in the Pairs Four. Tracy Little won the bronze in the Senior Solo Dance event while the Gryphon Precision team finished in 3rd position

1991-1992 The Figure Skating team finished a highly respectable 4th at the OWIAA Championships in London. The team won silver medals in both the Precision

and Variation Dance events and bronze medals in the Pairs Four and Similar Pairs.

1990-1991 The University of Guelph hosted their 1st OWIAA Figure Skating Championship in our new Olympic size arena. The Figure Skating team had

their best finish ever winning the bronze medal with Western only 1 point ahead.

1989-1990 The Figure Skating team had a fine year as they place fifth overall at the OWIAA Championships. The team of Susan Hamilton and Kelly

Walker won the Intermediate Similar Dance Event at the league finals and Darlene Martin placed second in the Intermediate Singles event.

Bonnie Jean MacKinnon and Darlene Martin won a bronze in the Intermediate Similars Pairs.

1988-1989 The figure skating team finished sixth in the nine team OWIAA Finals in Waterloo. Individually, Darlene Martin and Bonnie Jean McKinnon

won the Intermediate Similar Pairs and Angela Hurst and Cheryl Teskey placed second in the Junior Similar Pairs. McKinnon and Susan

Hamilton also placed second in the Junior Similar Dance.

1987-1988 Guelph finished seventh at the OWIAA Championships at Western and had several impressive individual performances. Carolyn Caruso

finished first in the Senior A Singles Competition and seventh in the Open Ladies Singles Event. Stacey Pilot placed seventh in the

Intermediate Solo Dance and Beth Gibson was eighth in the Seniors Solo Dance.

1986-1987 The Gryphon figure skating team placed 6th overall at the OWIAA Finals in only their second year of competition. Guelph put forth strong

performances in a number of categories and the highest finisher was the team of Paula McLean and Henrietta Stobbe who placed second in the

Junior Similar Dance event. Paula, then went on to place 4th in the Open Interpretive.

1985-1986 This is the first year for the University of Guelph to field a figure skating team. Tania Crane was chosen to be our coach. The girls participated

at two meets and the OWIAA championships. The team consisted of 10 skaters in their first year and they won a silver and two bronze medals.
