ESTONIA NEWSLETTER/EESTI UUDISKIRI

On March 14th, WWOOF Estonia had a significant day– its fifth birthday – which we celebrated a month later in the spring capital Türi.

The event was opened by Karin who presented an overview of the forthcoming day. After a common meal the hosting was taken over by Priit, who gave a introduction of wwoofing and its opportunities in Estonia. We are very happy that 27 farms across Estonia are welcoming wwoofers already. In the second half of the day Aita from Kalamatsi, and Eve from Tölpa shared their organic farming experiences. They are both nature- and animal-lovers, who like to run their farms as environmental friendly way as possible.

During the day we got to know each other more, eating traditional soup, sharing presents and emotions, and eating the super delicious cake baked especially for the happy day. What made the party table even more richer and unique were the delights brought by the guests, such as Unai

wheat flour and rye flour bread, Priidu sea-buckthorn jam, Kalamatsi goat cheese, just to name a fiew.

As a thank you to all farms and members we handed over the special WWOOF clay mugs. The birthday created a strong feeling of “us” that we deeply appreciate.

On the Sunday of March 18, a volunteer event took place in Tartu at Priidu& Geli’s, where we sculpted clay mugs to 27 member farms to thank them for working with the volunteers who visit the Estonian farms. Everyone made a big contribution to the making of clay mugs, which was really the most important goal of the day.

After the mugs have dried for a week, they were burnt, and once everyone got together in Tartu to varnish the mugs with glazing.

The green and red radish-shaped images looked very jolly. We spent a sunny, inspirational and relaxing afternoon with friends and soon-to-be-ready mugs. Once again the clay mugs found their way into the oven to prepare them for WWOOF Estonia’s birthday party on April 14, when it was time to hand them over as a token of our appreciation.

Redisekujutised kruusidel said lõbusad punased-rohelised. Veetsime päikselise, inspireeriva ja lõõgastava pärastlõuna valmivate kruuside ja sõprade seltisis.

Savikruusid rändasid jällegi ahju, et need siis valmis kujul 14. aprilli WWOOF Eesti sünnipäevaüritusel tänutäheks üle anda.

2 Making of clay mugs for farmersSavikruuside valmistamine taludeleBy Marian and Raili

It is WWOOF Estonia’s tradition to celebrate Christmas with the members and make Christmas cards for member farms. The Christmas party was held on December 3rd at the parents’ house of our lovely Kristel, and all active members were there. We ate our own tasty home-baked cookies, took a sauna, had intelligent conversations, and made Christmas cards.

Geroli introduced us potato printing known from our childhoods. By the end of the evening the fun handcrafted cards were done, and they were found by every farmer from their mailbox just before Christmas.

Geroli tutvustas meile lapsepõlvest teada-tuntud kartulitrükkija õhtu lõpuks said valmis imetoredad käsitöö kaardid, mille iga talunik jõulude eel oma postkastist leidis.

Defying the cold winter with a good mood in February, WWOOF Estonia video and radio clips were shot. Our requisites were rakes, hoes, shovels, seeds, furry hats, milking bucket, bronze goat, and a straw pack rented from the Old Material Storage, and transported to the location by a taxi (the taxi driver was not particularly happy about the crumbly straw pack at first, but after hearing about the concept of WWOOF he even offered his service for the future).

Until August the viewers of local TV and radio channels have a chance to get to know a character – probably unknown up to now – named WWOOF.

The clips were completed with the help of: Andre (camera man), Priit (narrator), Karin, Birgit, Marit, Rita, Peep, Merje, Marcel, Stoyan, Kamen, and other members and friends of WWOOF, who helped us with their thoughts and hard work.

To better describe how the clips were created a clip „making of“ reveals what went on behind the scenes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q5JbWPIe88

Klippide sünniloo paremaks kirjeldamiseks valmis ka lõbus “make of” klipp, mis paljastab filmivõtete telgitaguseid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q5JbWPIe88

February, 12th was a fun day on which we looked back to the past year. Karin covered the table with the best delights – organic cookies, fruits and juices.

We gladly stated that the year had been very fruitful. We participated in the volunteer fair, there were many reflections in the media, and two newsletters were published. Eight new and exciting farms joined Wwoof, they are definitely worth checking out. From May 2011 the volunteers are required to pay a small registration fee, but this helps us run our system (we are all working volunteer bases). Happily there are still over 600 volunteers in our database and counting.

As a tradition new coordinators were also chosen:

General Meeting- looking back and forwardÜldkoosolek- tagasi ja edasivaadeBy Maris Noor

Upcoming events/ tulevad üritused:28-29. July Wwoof weekend

Next weekend trip to a Estonian farm will be organised in the end of July to Sepa farm near summer resort Pärnu. Traditionally at least some of the Wwoof Estonia members will join and these weekend trips are free of charge. We will post more info to our Facebook page in the beginning of July.
