Stanger Secondary’s legacy eroding95-year-old institution hits rock bottom

By Xpress Reporter

The crisis at Stanger Secondary school further intensified when learners from grades 8 to 12 marched in protest from their school all the way to the Department of Education Circuit office on Friday. The learners were accompanied by multiple local law enforcement units that included the SAPS and the KwaDukuza Crime and Prevention Unit.

Learners lined up in front of Dawnview Primary School in Cato Street, facing the Circuit office; when the chants started and few placards were held up.

This demonstration brought together approximately 200 learners in which a group of 16 got an audience with Mr Ngubande to air their grievances.

According to the school, the learners took it upon themselves to march without educators and parents being informed.

Grade 12 Class of 2014 according to the Ilembe District Municipality o f f i c i a l l y a r e i n descending order from f i rs t posi t ion are : Sawliha Mahamod; Sameen Naymah Adnan (ZMS), Serena Naidoo; T e n i e l l e P i l l a y ; Saireesha Moodley (Manor Secondary), Mahomed J auha ra Khan (ZMS), Payal R a m r a j ( M a n o r Secondary), Ruwaal Samraj (Shakaskraal Secondary), Renae Naicker; Reed Reddy (Manor Secondary)

In the sweltering KwaDukuza heat, Ngubande was taking down notes while having to allay fears and bear witness to rowdy behaviour.

The ongoing issue of the Grade 8 learners (or what previous generations call “Standard 6” students) awaiting classrooms was mentioned by learners at the scene.

A grade 11 learner claimed that she joined the protest because she did not have educators for the following subjects: Maths, Life Orientation and Consumer Studies. However the school said that

a Grade 11 Maths educator was unavailable.

In one incident, male learners surrounded a SAPS police vehicle in which a Grade 10 learner was locked up. As the SAPS vehicle took off, learners started slapping the vehicle with

one learner hanging onto the back of the vehicle. Learners passing by were also intimated to join in and did so. At one juncture traffic officers had to “Sheppard” the learners from causing disturbances.

The protest took a nasty turn when learners returned to the 95-year-old institution later in

the day burning tyres and upsetting bins with paper strewn on College Road and Elisabeth Street respectively. A part of Stanger Secondary's school gates were damaged.

The school is caught between a “rock and a hard place” according to one community stalwart who adds that the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education should have acted a long time ago.

Comments from the KZN Department of Education are still forthcoming.

Xpress Times employee Yunus Dalliah (also known as Johnny) was well known to many as the guy running the show at the Stanger Picture Palace cinema in Cooper Street (now King Shaka Street) from 1969 to 1984. Dalliah is seen with signature bell bottom pants and long hair reminiscent of 1977 which was also the Disco era.

Dalliah excelled as a videographer and photographer in the days of analogue equipment, where today everyone has access to digital compact cameras that record video and take pictures.

KwaDukuza and his daughter were the survivors of a hijacking at Stanger Manor on Sunday morning at 10:30am.

According to KwaDukuza SAPS l i a i son o f f i ce r , Inspector Johannes Khoza, the Johannesburg man; Dhanasegren “Dan” Pillay (52) was approached by two black males who demanded his Silver VW Polo. Pillay and his daughter were on their way to his late brother-in-law's funeral.

“ T h r e e 9 m m s p e n t cartridges were recovered at the crime scene where the victim was lying, having been shot at his left knee and both ankles. It appears that he was pulled down from the vehicle

and suspects drove away with the vehicle.” The vehicle was recovered at Lindelani on Monday this week. The police reported his daughter as traumitised.

“ I appea l t o t he community members to s u p p l y w i t h a n y information that will lead to an arrest of the two suspects who are still at large, the matter is s t i l l u n d e r investigation,” said Khoza.

Pillay was in the Intensive Care Unit ( I C U ) o f V i c t o r i a Hospital and is now in a stable condition. He is the brother of ex-ML Sultan educator and ex-KwaDukuza resident Anand Pillay.

( K D M ) a n d E s k o m representatives held a media briefing about the issue of load shedding at the Council Chambers on Tuesday, 10 February 2015.

According to Eskom, load shedding is the last step taken in an effort to prevent a national blackout.

One of the main issues mentioned was the uncertainty that residents have about the times during which load shedding would occur.

EXCO member, Sandeep O u d h r a m s t a t e d t h a t institutions like hospitals need to pre-plan, and that these institutions will be negatively affected if electricity is shut down unplanned.

“We want to give residents an idea of what is happening,” said Oudhram.

From (L-R): Daya Padayachee (owner of Padayachee Bros) who was Dalliah's boss at the iconic cinema of yesteryear, in the then Stanger, is seen with Baboo Ganie

(owner of Oriental Delight) in this picture circa 1979

Load shedding… What you need to knowLoad shedding… What you need to know

LOAD SHEDDING: From: (L-R): Chairperson of Infrastructure and Technical Committee, Councillor Sandeep Oudhram and KwaDukuza

Mayor Ricardo Mthembu

KDM Electrical Engineer, Mr Nick Hall explained the stages of load shedding. He also explained that some areas are switched on later than other areas due to an overload.

“To view the roster, go onto Eskom's website, click on load shedding, then click on KwaDukuza. There you can see when we will be off and you can plan,” said Hall.

Eskom representatives stated that there are not enough plants to generate electricity to the country and that the idea of implementing load shedding is to ensure that the supply and demand is in balance.

KDM Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu urged the community to co-operate as “there is no way to avoid this.” He also emphasized the importance of energy saving.

NOT TEA: This is allegedly what the residents of Darnall and Zamani Township receive upon opening their taps. According to Councillor

Andrew Gopaul, this is an ongoing issue. “We have complained to iLembe on numerous occasions and nothing has been done. This is a health

hazard and it is unacceptable,” he said.

Admission of guilt fines are dealt with in section 57 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

To avoid having to make endless appearances in Court, we are often tempted to pay an

admission of guilt for traffic offences. What we do not realise is that by paying an

admission of guilt fine, you get a criminal record which will remain against your name for a

period of at least ten years.People are often advised to pay admission of guilt fines

after they had been arrested for some offence. What people do not understand of course is that once their fingerprints have been taken by the local police station and they have appeared in Court should they then decide to pay an admission of guilt fine, they would of course get a criminal record against their names.

These criminal records will of course remain against your name for a period of at least 10 years or until such time as an application to expunge same is made. The Western Cape High Court in State v Parsons 2013 (1) SACR 38 considered the issue of a person who had paid an admission of guilt fine and who was unaware of the implications of doing so.

The Court granted the application by the accused and set aside the admission of guilt on the basis that the person had not been properly advised that should he pay the admission of guilt he would obtain a criminal record. That of course does not mean that the person is now scot-free.

What that means is that the person would now have to appear in Court afresh on the charges and would now have to contest the charges brought against him by the prosecution. Paying the fine has got a further implication that it can also be linked to a civil case where a person can sue for damages and medical expenses (if applicable).

By Xpress ReporterThe transportation of learners by

way of having them sit on benches in closed canopy bakkies was spotted at a local primary school last week.

Prominent provincial and national newspapers have covered the heinous manner in which innocent learners (children) died due this "unnatural" way of transporting people.

The fatalities that are mounting due to impending accidents over a two year period in KwaZulu-Natal is beyond shocking.

In the local primary school we spotted a van bearing an ND registration dropping off children. The driver relied on his review mirror to see that learners got off t h e r e a r o f t h e v e h i c l e . Approximately 14 learners were seated in the back.

Folks, imagine that a crash test dummy test was pe r fo rmed on dummies resembling children (Remember this mode of transport means that there are no seat belts). Can you imagine the results of this kind of test? As parents you don't want to imagine and as a society sorrow then manifest anger. The immediacy of fatalities, paralysis, broken bodies and more comes to mind.

This is what transpired in Pietermaritzburg almost two weeks to the day when seven learners lost their lives when a freak accident happened in which a bakkie smashed into a home.

In that incident the province's MEC for Transport, Community

WAXING, BLEACHING, THREADING &EYEBROW TINTING

“I was 10 years old when I had the gift of knowing things! I was able to tell when the phone was about to ring before it did! I didn't think anything of it but I was shocked when later I was able to tell who was calling! At the age of 16, I used to read palms for my educators at school and I have had various stalls at the Winter Fair and other events at Manor Recreation Grounds. I went to a psychic that told me I have a special gift. I feel good about being able to have such an amazing gift, but it makes me sad when people think I am lying. When what I said will happen comes to pass, then they return to me and start believing. It's more upsetting that people have to have things happen to them to believe, instead of just listening to me in the first place. I have helped many people avoid hijackings, house breakings and accidents! Apart from reading Tarot (pronounced as “Tarroe”) cards or palms, I'm able to see certain people and read them! I have also helped many people in their business and they have had great success! I've also helped a women fall pregnant after she could not do so for 12 years and that was amazing for me! I have many clients in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town, Richards Bay and overseas as well! Contact me: Dhanusha on 0737663676.”

KwaDukuza Volleyball Association will kick start the 2015 volleyball season with the hosting of the Trophies Engravers Top 8 knockout tournament that gets underway at the association courts tomorrow, 12 February 2015.

At the draws held at The Quartz last Thursday, 2014 competitive league winners, Grove End were all smiles when they were drawn in the Pool B with all social league teams that includes Cool Leaders, Darnall United and Teachers Style. This almost guarantees them a semi-final berth. The runners up spot in the pool will be a tightly contested one as Cool Leaders, Darnall and teachers are neck to neck with their strengths.

The rest of the teams were drawn in the Pool A which the pundits consider the pool of death. 3 competitive sides, KSST, Randsons and Warriors will battle it out to win the pool or be runners up in order to guarantee their entry into the knock out stages. However, they have to wary of the dark horse in the pool, social league winners Sunbrook who are capable of springing a surprise.

All games will be played on a round robin bases over the next three weeks with the runners up and winners of each pool advancing to the semi-final. On paper, Grove End are set to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile, the women's tournament will take place on Friday, February 20 at the association courts commencing at 6.30pm. To date two teams have indicated their

willingness to participate in the tournament. All female teams interested in participating in the women's tournament are requested to contact Abraham on 079 4280 345. Medals will be given to all participants followed by supper.

In other volleyball news, KDVA will host a corporate knockout tournament on March 4 before launching the 2015 Corporate League on March 25. Players participating in the corporate league must be 35 years and older (born 1980/1979). Teams are allowed to field one player between the ages of 25-35.

In the case of female teams participating in the corporate league all players must be over 21 years. The 2015 Corporate League will be contested over three rounds.

The KDVA annual general meeting will take place on Thursday, February 26 at The Quartz Conference Centre commencing at 6.30pm.
