The borehole and its place in KwaDukuza lore is forever solidified with iconic grandeur for those individuals that offered unlimited and free water as far as 2015 and the blocked dams that caused a perceived and protracted drought. However, when groundwater (borehole water) is overused, long term, there is the issue of land subsidence or sinkhole occurrences.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) land subsidence is a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth's surface owing to subsurface movement of earth materials.
Catastrophic land subsidence leading to the formation of s i n k h o l e s c a n a l s o b e associated with declines in groundwater levels.
According to SA Geologists, the maximum quantity of groundwater that can be developed economically in South Africa is estimated at about 6 billion/m³ a year. Some groundwater resources take a long time to replenish. If too much groundwater is extracted too fast, it may become depleted resulting in possible earth cavities.

His tweet read: “@MmusiMaimane: #PennySparrow comments are racist. They are an insult to me and to our party. We have too many of these in SA & we must criminalise these.”
Sparrow has been served with a notice of intention to suspend her membership of the DA and the party has also referred her conduct to the Federal Legal Commission for investigation.
In a written statement, the party's Herman Mashaba indicated he had opened a case against Sparrow for “infringing the dignity of all South Africans and for dehumanising black South Africans”.

(CPF), together with SAPS officials held a media briefing at the station on Monday, 4 January 2016.
According to Colonel MA Nene, there was a great deal of liquor related incidents, but police visibility played a major role in curbing crime during the festive season.
He said that drunken driving was rife and led to 50 arrests being made.
“There have been a number of accidents as a result of drunken driving, i n c l u d i n g a m a j o r accident where 4 people were killed on the R102.
“There were also many assault cases that were reported,” said Nene.
He added that shebeens were raided and owners that were operat ing illegally were charged.

parked his vehicle at the owner's Melville home on Christmas Eve. On Boxing Day he was contacted by the fleet manager after the vehicle was spotted in the area transporting passengers. On checking, Dube realized that the vehicle was stolen and went to report. Police spotted the vehicle in the Lindelani area transporting people to the beach. Both registration plates were removed but found in the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest and found to be a conductor in the local rank. Khetokuhle Phiri (20) was remanded in custody and will apply for bail next week.
The show goes onIf you are suspected by the community
of a crime then you are guilty. This is the trend in the outlying areas. On Boxing Day, Baxolele Khiwa of Nonoti returned home and found his compound room had been broken into. A man known only as Majola was identified as a possible suspect. The residents of the compound tracked him down, brought him to Khiwa's room where he was badly assaulted and hospitalized. Now Khiwa who was a victim of a crime is a witness in favour of the likely suspect against those
who tried to help. So far, Sithembiso Khawula (55) was arrested and is due back at court on 28 January.
No directionMoses Jagadis of Verulam stopped at
recreation grounds to relieve himself at the popular “fence toilet” on Christmas Day. Two youths approached him, threatened him with knives and fled with his cash, cellphones and GPS. He reported the incident to the police and at about 7pm police received information and arrested one youth who was in possession of the navigator. Jagadis identified his item and Simphiwe Sakhile Mthembu (22) of Lindelani was detained and charged. He will seek bail this week.
A sad ChristmasA family awoke on Christmas Day to sad
news. Their 16-year-old son was stabbed to death at 01:00am in the Shakaskraal area. Circumstances surrounding the death of the boy are unclear. Police have arrested Sabelo Nyanga (20) whose co-operation led to them recovering a bottle-neck and his blood-stained shorts. Nyanga will apply for bail this week.

KwaDukuza's version of Woodstock '69 continued at the KwaDukuza Recreational Grounds on Sunday, 20 December 2015.
The KwaDukuza Music Festival, second edition, drew thousands of music lovers from around the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) and beyond with its free admission.
The festivities kicked off with 30 local acts, which were selected by seasoned producer Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, popularly known as DJ Oskido, during the KwaDukuza Music Conference on Thursday.
In the afternoon, famous musicians such as Lungi Naidoo, DJ Mpilo, Professor, KO, Dream Team and Heavy K took to the stage and entertained the crowd until the

New Year's Day is always one of the busiest days at all beaches, it is expected that there will be crowds of people and a measure of difficulty trying to control the influx of people. However, after a late night of loud music from taxis, the continuous hooting, whistling and people screaming on Thursday night residents were not expecting to wake up to what seemed to be an 'organised event' by the ANC early on Friday morning.
With a stage set up in the car park area, music playing at extremely high volumes began from around 8:00am. Busloads of people started arriving and it wasn't long before there was absolute chaos at Blythedale Beach. It was obvious that although there were traffic officers and SAPS police and officials in Blythedale trying to manage the situation, they had eventually lost control of the number of people entering Blythedale.
Blythedale obviously one of the s m a l l e r b e a c h e s w i t h i n t h e Kwadukuza Municipality definitely cannot accommodate the numbers that were streaming in during the Beach Festival and on New Year's Day. It is disappointing that amidst the continuous complaints to the Municipality and the efforts of residents to improve the situation every year, it seems that very little is being done by local authorities to protect residents.
It is accepted fact that generally New Year's Day is chaotic at the beaches. By choosing to host an ANC event on New Year's Day the organisers increased the number of people coming into Blythedale. As a result law enforcement officials were

New Year's Day Pandemonium at Blythedale Beach!

ACDP Councillor Nel Sewraj said: "The Blythedale Beach car park is public space. Any event hosted in it requires prior permission from the KDM Council. To my knowledge no application for permission to host this event was made to the Council. This means that Council did not approve the use of the car park. Also, choosing to dominate this space with a political event on New Year's Day was a recipe for disaster and a real oversight of the organisers. They have put political agenda before public interest.
The organisers of this event failed to produce a plan for this event that is in-keeping with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act. They did not have proper security measures, crowd management measures or motor vehicle parking arrangements. This shows absolute disregard for our laws, the public and for residents.”
New Years Day is a Public Holiday and creating such Pandemonium is insensitive. The ACDP believes that residents and the public at large must be respected and that Council need to take greater measures to enforce their own by-laws regarding public disturbance and noise at our beaches during weekends and the festive period. The safety of people must be a priority and it is imperative that we curb such hooliganism from prevailing in our communities.
Our beaches are there for the public to enjoy, however it is critical that we preserve our beaches and keep them neat and clean at all times.

"I am bored," announced the queen. Her advisor pressed his fingers together. "Some music, your majesty?" The queen gave a slight nod. But when the court musicians started playing something she had heard a dozen times before, she sent them away.
Her advisor tugged at his moustache. "The court acrobats, then?" The queen nodded again. But their flips and turns did not raise her spirits. "What you need," said the advisor, "is a true diversion. A contest, perhaps." The queen sat a little taller. "A contest, you say?" Then she sank back into her throne. "Whatever of?" Her advisor furrowed his brow. "New music, perhaps?" The queen waved her hand. "A baking competition?" The queen frowned. Her advisor started to sweat. "I know! A contest of the best portrait of Her Highness.”
The queen chortled. "Please. I already know what I look like. Besides, the hall is brimming with portraits." She rose and started pacing. "I am tired of all this," she said, gesturing to the room. "I need a different sort of beauty. Something that can take one's breath away.”
She gestured to her scribe. "Let everyone know that the Queen is holding a contest for the most beautiful thing in the world. And the prize,"she paused, "the prize shall be this crown.” Her staff gasped. The queen's crown was pure gold, studded with magnificent gems. There was no treasure like it in the whole country. several days, the queen had a pounding headache. "This is hopeless," she muttered. "Not quite hopeless, Your Majesty." The queen sat up, wondering who dare contradict her. A bearded man stood behind the palace guards. "I can put an end to this madness, Your Highness." He waved towards the long line of supplicants behind him. The queen raised an eyebrow. "You have brought me the most beautiful thing?”
The man laughed. "Not I. Nor anyone here. I have stood in line for two days as your faithful servant to tell you that you seek that which cannot be brought to you. You must go to it." The man gave a deep bow. "That is all." The queen paused, astonished. When she found her voice again she asked "Whatever do you mean?" But the man was gone.
The queen's advisor twisted his hat. "Do not bother yourself with the prattle of a madman, Madam," he said. But the fever of an idea had struck the queen. "Send the rest home," she ordered of the people still waiting in line. "I must prepare for a trip." The advisor nearly dropped his hat. "A trip? Where?" The queen smiled as she had not done since she was a child. "Elsewhere!" A Royal Trip, even one as odd as this, doesn't just happen. Wardrobes and food wagons must be prepared. Soldiers, footmen, and ladies-in-waiting must ready themselves. But after several days of bustle, the royal procession was ready. By now, the Queen was cured of her boredom, and almost delirious to see what awaited. Crowds gathered as the entourage made its way out of the city. The Queen leaned out the carriage window and held her crown high. "To the most beautiful thing in the
world!" she cried. "To the most beautiful," the crowds cheered back. The fever had caught, and spread. The queen was not sure what she was seeking, or where to find it. But as her entourage rounded a hill, she looked back to her royal home and felt something stir within her. Between the glow of the setting sun and the gleam of the white towers, the scene looked like something out of a storybook. "Why," she wondered, "have I never seen my home this way before?" The queen spent weeks travelling. She saw beauty in the peasants coaxing life out of the dirt. She saw it in the birds taking one last flight before roosting for the night. In a newly born calf. In the stars twinkling at night. But what was the most beautiful thing? One day, the queen sailed a lake. In the middle of the water, she realized that she was at peace - and that she had been for many days. Suddenly, she understood. With all her might, she tore a piece of her crown off. She tossed the fragment into the lake and watched it slowly sink. "I am ready to return home," she announced. As she journeyed back, the queen left a piece of crown at a small country church. She left a piece at the root of a centuries-old tree. She placed a piece at the bottom of a lush valley and the top of a snow-capped mountain. When her procession stumbled upon a spring, bubbling water from the ground, she added a piece there. She dug a piece into the newly turned dirt in a field. She threaded a piece into the mane a fine filly. Little by little, the queen's crown got smaller until nothing was left. She had found the most beautiful thing. It was the world.

New Year's Celebration around the world By Xpress Reporter
As 2015 drew to a close, many people were bidding a weary and wary adieu to a year marred by attacks that left nations reeling and nerves rattled.
In South Africa, KwaDukuza and KZN were rocked by lengthy water stoppages and nationally the financial minister double swap brought on investor heartburn.
In Bangkok, site of a deadly bombing; months ago, police flanked partygoers. In Paris, residents recovering from their city's own deadly attacks enjoyed scaled-back celebrations. And in Munich, police warned of the threat of a terror attack.
A look at how people around the world welcomed the new year:
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
In the megacity of Dubai, a fire broke out two hours before midnight in The Address hotel, in the area where a massive fireworks display was being prepared. The five-star hotel is near the BurjKhalifa, the world's tallest building. At least one person suffered a heart attack from the smoke and over-crowding during evacuation, and 14 suffered minor injuries. Organizers said the BurjKhalifa had been fitted with 400,000 LED lights and 1.6 tons of fireworks was used in the display. Burning debris rained down from The Address building as firetrucks raced to the scene. It was unclear what caused the fire, which ran up the 63-story building. The Address has 626 luxury apartments and 196 hote l rooms, according to Skyscraper Center, which tracks skyscrapers.
SOUTH AFRICAThe Kaapse Klopse is a
New Year's carnival that takes place in the streets of Cape Town on the 2nd of January, a date known as Tweede Nuwejaar (second New Year). Up to 10 000 banjo-strumming minstrels took to the streets of District Six, winding through the Cape Town CBD on their way to Green Point Stadium. The Johannesburg CBD was also in carnival mood and celebrated with music and dance as well a professional fireworks display. Closer to home as Durban c e l e b r a t e s w i t h s i g n a t u r e celebrations in many spots like Blue Lagoon, the Beach Front and many Nite clubs. Countrywide braais are another tradition on a New Years Eve.
NEW ZEALANDNew Zealand, the first
nation with a sizable population to celebrate the New Year, counted down the seconds to midnight with a giant digital clock
on Auckland's landmark Sky Tower. Horns blared and crowds cheered as the tower was lit up with fireworks, with colors shifting from green to red to white.
FRANCEThe French are still
recovering from the Nov. 13 attacks that left 130 people dead in Paris, and authorities prepared for a possible worst-case scenario on New Year's Eve. About 60,000 police officers and troops were deployed across the country, and revelers said that made them feel safer.
French President Francois Hollande used his traditional New Year's Eve speech to warn that the terrorist threat is still at its "highest level." "2015 has been a year of suffering and resistance," he said. "Let's make 2016 a year of courage and hope." Paris canceled its usual fireworks display in favor of a 5-minute video performance at the Arc de Triomphe just before midnight, relayed on screens along the Champs Elysee, where people chanted. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the show was aimed at "sending the world the message that Paris is standing, proud of its lifestyle and living together."
THAILANDLess than six months
after a pipe bomb killed 20 people at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, tens of thousands of people rang in the new year at the intersection with live music and a countdown.
Up to 5,000 police officers were in the area, with explosive ordnance disposal experts sweeping the area ahead of time.

The South African Weather Service has predicted that the heatwave sweeping across the province is set to continue “for a long time”.
Tens of thousands of people swarmed to beaches and swimming pools over the past few days seeking solace from the soaring temperatures.
SA Weather Service has warned that temperatures in the KZN region are set to soar even higher in the coming weeks.
Vermeulen said the high temperatures were a result of El Niño (pronounced as El Neenyoh) a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific and a high-pressure weather system in the western region.
This week alone KwaDukuza saw the mercury record temperatures from the mid 30 degree mark to real feel temperatures of 40 and above due to humidity.

Back to school cricket coaching clinicWith the festive season now over, it is
now time to get back into shape before the start of school next week. It is for this reason that Saidee Mhlongo (ex KZN Dolphins player) has teamed up with well-known cricket administrator and coach, Desigan Pillay for a school cricket coaching clinic to bring players up to speed with their fitness levels and talent.
The clinic will run over three days and it is open to all boys from the age of 7 to 14.
The clinic will be held at the Country Seen above is Desigan Pillay who together with Saidee Mhlongo will
run a cricket coaching clinic starting from Thursday

United Cricket Club registered back to back victories in the iLembe District Cricket Union T20 A league over the weekend.
They closed up 2015 in style by beating last year's league winners, Manor Cricket Club and then accounted for Dawnheights Cricket Club, this despite the long break. After a bad start to the match with their top order batsman loosing wickets at regular intervals it was left to the bottom half of the batting order to bring up the win.

was the 21, 10 and 5km Bighill Run which commenced at Collisheen Estate at 6am in perfect weather conditions. The highlight of the day was when Nikeyi 'Jawaan' Maarbeel was escorted by the traffic department to the finish line as he was acknowledged as the most senior athlete in the event.
In the 10km event, Nishen Chetty cut the finishing tape in an incredible time of 53 minutes. Dippy Moodley completed the 21km run in 2h10 and he was closely followed in by Paddy Padayachee in 2h20 whilst Maarbeel completed in 2h23.
Club Grounds on Thursday and Friday, 7 and 8 January 2016 from 2pm to 5pm on both days and on Saturday, 9 January from 9am to 12.
