STAY ALERT: Always be cautious and take protection measures whilst on the beach
By Xpress Reporter
It is important to be aware about safety and protection measures whilst on the beach. The following tips are vital to all people visiting the beach:
• Read and obey the beach regulations and follow instructions from lifeguards.
Report hazardous conditions or incidents to lifeguards or other beach personnel.
Make sure you know how to swim if entering the sea.
Swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard usually in a zone between two red and yellow flags.
Never swim alone.Swim parallel to the shore if you
wish to swim a long distance.Supervise children closely, even
when lifeguards are present. A personal f loatation device is recommended for children.
If caught in a rip current, swim sideways until free and don't swim against the current's pull.
Don't dive into unfamiliar waters what may seem deep could be very shallow. Feet-first is safer.
Avoid swimming near rocks, piers, jetties and breakwaters.
If you are in trouble in the sea, shout or wave for help.
Scuba dive only if trained and certified.

Do not drink alcohol before or during swimming, diving or boating. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, coordination and reduces your body's ability to stay warm.
Do not take drink glasses, glass bottles or glass containers to the beach as they can break and pose a threat to bare feet.
Wear foot protection on unclean, rocky or hot sand beaches.
Do not light fires on the beach except in designated areas.
Stay clear of coastal dune cliffs as they can collapse suddenly.
Protect your skin from over exposure to UVA and UVB rays by wearing water-proof sunscreen with a high protection factor of 20+. Avoid the sun between the hottest times of the day: 11am to 3pm.
Wear eye protection, good quality sunglasses protect against UV rays.
Drink plenty of water regularly to avoid dehydration even if you don't feel thirsty. Your body needs water to keep cool and to replace lost salts through sweating.
Watch for signs of heat stroke which is life-threatening. The body's temperature can rise too high due to poor sweating. Signs include hot, red and dry skin; rapid and weak pulse and rapid, shallow breathing. Move to a cooler place, cool the body down and seek medical help.

T h e K w a D u k u z a Municipality (KDM) Mayor, C o u n c i l l o r R i c a r d o Mthembu informed 500 s e n i o r c i t i z e n s o f governments commitment to the interests of marginalized groups at a special year-end engagement which saw an exchange of gifts between government leaders and senior citizens on Tuesday, 15 December 2015.
“We wish to thank the Thuthukani Day Care Centre for recognizing our work as government leaders. We also appreciate the Speaker of the N a t i o n a l A s s e m b l y , Honourable Baleka Mbete for fulfilling her promise by revisiting the Day Care Centre once again this year.
“ W e a t t a c h s p e c i a l importance to the character of her leadership as purely being based on humanitarian values which says a lot about h e r c o m m i t m e n t t o marginalized groups in society,” said Mthembu.
Thuthukani Day Care Centre has on record, over 500 senior citizens who are randomly taken care off during the day.

In her key-note address, Honourable Baleka Mbete said elderly citizens must tell the stories about their past in a bid to influence the culture a n d f u t u r e o f o t h e r generations.
“Being with you here is a blessing. You are precious and valuable citizens, you represent the history of and the future of our country so you need to tell the stories that you have never got a chance to tell in the past about the history and heritage of our country.
“It is a principle matter that we respect the constitutional rights of our elderly citizens. Most importantly we as government should improve the lives of our senior citizens,” said Mbethe.
The engagement with Honourable Mbete was aimed at providing a public participation platform for senior citizens to engage on issues affecting them which in turn will influence the work of Parliament in conducting oversight and assessing how the legislation c o n t r i b u t e s i n t h e transformation of the lives of citizens, in particular senior citizens.

apprehended. The suspect took the law enforcement team to Hambanathi whereupon stolen goods were recovered. The “Old Boys” then handed over the suspect to Tongaat SAPS.
Then later in the day, the pair nabbed two males in Clarke Road, Erasmus Dam for selling whoonga. The suspects had 36 straws (valued at R 1000) in their possession. The Cluster Officers said that they also found eight pickpockets in the “blue tin house” and females were also part of the group.

“The water shortage is also an 'induced' one”
If the comments attributed to MEC Nomusa Dube Ncube for local government in KZN as quoted by Cllr MS Sing in his article on the Water Crisis have been correctly reported, then perhaps the views of Dr Turton would place the real crisis facing us all in a better perspective.
South Africa's water shortage is not simply the result of the current drought says water expert Dr Anthony Turton.
“The water shortage is also an 'induced' one,” says Turton. “It stems from a lack of strategic planning, a loss of skills to 'transformation', and the fact that poorly functioning waste-water treatment plants are spewing close on 4 billion litres of untreated or partially treated sewage into the country's dams and rivers every day.”
These sewage spills are the most serious of the many problems in the water sector. “Just as a small volume of oil destroys the quality of a large volume of water, so a small source of persistent sewage has essentially the same effect.”
Sewage discharges are also driving the eutrophication (excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water) of most major dams. Eutrophic water is characterised by the presence of high levels of nutrients, which in turn promote the

Letters to the Editorgrowth of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae.
O n e v e r y c o m m o n s p e c i e s o f cyanobacteria produces a potent toxin known as microcystin. This is chemically similar to cobra venom. It is also carcinogenic (cancer-producing) and damages the liver and central nervous system.
Warns Turton: “The microcystin levels found in a number of major dams including Hartbeespoort, Hazelmere, Midmar and the Vaal Dam are amongst the highest ever measured in the world.
“Microcystin toxin levels become a concern in developed countries at far below the levels commonly found in South Africa.
“Moreover, nothing is being done here to remove the toxin. There are only two known technologies capable of neutralising microcystin, and neither is in mainstream use in any of the country's bulk potable water treatment plants.
“Worse still, no one knows whether these technologies can in fact neutralise microcystin at the concentrations found in South Africa. In this regard, we are truly flying blind.”
Instead of dealing with these difficult issues, the Government is under-reporting the extent of eutrophication.
Official reports suggest that only 5% of the national water resource is at risk, but a recent study by the Council for Scientific and
I n d u s t r i a l R e s e a r c h (CSIR) has found that at least two thirds of South Africa's largest dams are already eutrophic.
The more eutrophication proceeds, the more the 38 billion cubic metres of water in our dams are likely to become unusable.
“This looming disaster could have been avoided if a rigid concept of transformation had not been allowed to trump the imperative to safeguard public health,” says Turton.

MAY YOU ALL BE BLESSED
As the year 2015 fades into the past heralding in the New Year, and we celebrate our success, it becomes necessary to also critically review our achievements and feats so that we constructively formulate resolutions for a brighter future. Generally, significant events that impacted strongly on our lives determine the resolutions we make to face the challenges of the future with renewed vigor.
Our country has made considerable progress towards consolidating and implementing the principles enshrined in our constitution but I hope “corruption” fades away now!! Murders, rape, hijacking, with minority groups becoming soft targets for criminals, have persisted unabated, often at an untenable rate despite illustrious manifestos and promises made bypoliticians lobbying support fromconstituents.
We have noticed major changes in oureducation system to fast-track pupils from the disadvantaged sectors of our community and trust that all are afforded equal opportunities and resources to acquire education in a land that requires skills and human assets to positively transform the economy.
We look forward to positive change in thenew year from all sectors and individuals that will add brilliance and luster to our rainbow nation in its commitment towards the promotion of goodwill, peaceful co-existence and economic prosperity. We want to learn lessons from the past and to grow from the mistakes we have previously made. It is the dream of every citizen to feel a sense of belonging to a new democracy that is committed to bringing joy, peace andprosperity for all South Africans. But crimeis destroying the every core of human existence and needs urgent government intervention.
I believe, as a political and community activist I will remain the eyes, ear and voice of the people and I to echo positive vibes from all levels including those at grass-roots that reverberate the powerful message of being truly proud South Africans. Our dreams and resolutions must be translated into positive outcomes and reality and “not illusions that fade with the winds of change”. I wish you all a MERRYCHRISTMAS and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. May all of you be blessed and your desires fulfilled.
“God Bless South Africa”.Roy Naidoo - DarnallPolitical and Community Activist

WISHING YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS...
GLOWING WITH PEACE, JOY &

The children of Christian Community Ministries (CCM) together with the management and staff of the Xpress Times wish you a Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year
Matthew 1: 18 25: “V18: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
V19: Then Joseph her husband, being just a man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
V20: But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
V21: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
V22: Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying,
V23: Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
V24: Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife
V25: And knew her not till she had brought forth her first born son: and he called his name JESUS.”
The birth of Jesus Christ presents to mankind the impeccable work of God the Father as humanity and deity

The reality of Christmas
worked harmoniously to fulfil the prophetic declaration found in Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
The b i r th of Jesus i s the manifestation of heaven's authority, power and purpose displayed on earth. The celebration of Christmas does not find its substance and completeness in external activities and emotions. It is the realisation that a Saviour, a King was born to save humanity and reposition man to his original relationship with his maker. The birth of a Saviour was to alter the course of mankind from death and decay to one of everlasting life. It brought with it the elements of love, joy, peace and goodwill. The arrival of Jesus as Saviour reconfigured the destiny of mankind. It facilitated a c o n t i n u o u s f e l l o w s h i p w i t h Emmanuel (God with us).
The spirit of Christmas brings with it undeniable hope and unassuming love. All of this made available to humanity by the birth of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate Christmas, our primary focus must be on Jesus, for it is only then that the reality of Christmas can be experienced.
