On March 15th the Department ofMicrobiology amp Immunology willparticipate in a oneshyday fundraisingcampaign called ldquoMcGillshy24rdquo This McGillshywide initiative consists of solicitingpotential donors to directly support ourDepartment primarily through emailmessages and social media To get ourcampaign going I will personally give$150 Please be generous nocontribution is too small to support our

ACHIEVEMENTS

Zika VirusDrs Sagan and Richer are currentlyconducting laboratory research toimprove the understanding of theZika virus infection They were ableto successfully cause a Zika infectionin adult mice with a normal immunesystem This is an exciting discoveryas the virus has only been studiedon mice with defective immunesystems which limited theunderstanding of the response to itThe MIMM researchers werefeatured in the Med eshynewsletter Toread it click here

MIMM MiCrafts wins 2ndplace

In November 2016 a team of MIMMstudents undertook a unique projectas part of the ldquoDo Something AboutAntibiotics Challengerdquo to raiseawareness about antibioticresistance This challenge wasorganised by the Small WorldInitiative (SWI) and judged by apanel at the Centers for DiseaseControl (CDC) A total of 14universities from around the globeparticipated with projects that ranthe gamut from a museum

What is your passion ldquoSciencerdquo requires having thepassion to embrace all the

symposium to mannequinchallenges The MIMM project submitted forconsideration was MicrobialCrafts (MiCrafts) handshyknitted plushies crossshystitchedkeychains and studentshydesignedbuttons of microshyorganisms Theproceeds from the sale went to theSWI helping fund the training ofeducators in underprivilegedschools and thus allowing morestudents to join the global effort ofcrowdsourcing discoveries inantibiotics The judges said that they loved thesubmission and were particularlyimpressed at the depth and reach ofthe projectrsquos impact They added thatthey found the MiCrafts to be a greatconversation starter helping bridgethe divide between academia andthe wider public The members of theMIMM Microbial Crafts team whodedicated numerous hours to theproject saw their efforts vindicatedwhen the CDC judges awardedthem second placemdashan excellentresult which sets the bar for futureprojects The team is very pleased with thewin and is currently working onfilling a major order of MiCrafts to bedelivered at the SWI 4thannual Symposium in June MiCrafts team
