The Principal’s Message
We have had an excellent beginning to the 2016/17 school year at Laidlaw! Children and teach-
ers are always excited about the first day back, and this was evident by the energy that was felt as
students and parents began to gather in front of the school. As we gathered, one couldn’t help but
notice the many new faces that we are welcoming to the student body and Laidlaw community
this year.
Over the summer, several parts of the school were updated. We installed a new intercom/bell
system; upgraded our wifi capacity; painted the Middle Year’s hallway; and received new furni-
ture for the Grade 7/8 science/math room. As always, the cleaning staff, tradespeople, and teach-
ers worked very hard to have the school ready for the arrival of the students. Work continues in
the “Learning Commons” (library), where you will soon see new shelving. This is also
Laidlaw’s year for cyclical replacement of computers. All of these updates will allow us to bet-
ter meet the needs of our students and provide increased opportunity for student engagement.
As you will see on our 2016-2017 staff list on the following page, there have been several chang-
es. This year, we welcome Mrs. Cornelia Marcil (Reading Recovery), Ms. Amy McLeod
(Kindergarten), Mr. Garrett Glenwright (Grade 1/2), Ms. Christine Gouriluk (K-5 Music), Mr.
Sayed Noureldin (6, 7 & 8 French), Mr. Jesse Thomas (Band), and Mr. Michael Stupak (Phys.
Ed.). Laidlaw School also welcomes six student teachers from the University of Manitoba: Ms.
Kirsten Chan with Mrs. Bradbury, Mr. Vincenzo Bruni with Mrs. Aiello, Ms. Ashley Mayberry
with Mr. Matas, Ms. Nicole Strick with Mr. Glenwright, Ms. Madison Jocelyn with Mrs. Oike,
and Mr. Riley Colpitts with Mr. Stupak. We love the energy and ideas that all these new people
bring to Laidlaw.
On Wednesday, September 14th, we continued our tradition of the Ringing in the School Y ear
assembly. We took this opportunity to formally welcome everyone back, and to especially wel-
come all our new students. September also means “Strong Beginnings,” where teachers will
gather information in order to provide appropriate academic programming. We will also continue
with work in the area of “Human Rights” and inclusion at the classroom level and school level in
order to continue building a positive school atmosphere and responsible citizens.
I look forward to meeting you at the Parent Information Evening at 7:00 pm on September 14 th.

Laidlaw Call-In System/Communication
Communication between home and school is of utmost importance
and we are trying to make it as easy as possible for you. You may
call us at 204-888-1678 or fax us at 204-888-2058. If your child is
to be absent or late, please leave a detailed message on our Absence
Line at 204-888-1678. Press 3 before 9:00 a.m. or 12:45 p.m.
A newsletter and calendar of events will be on our website:

information posted by teachers and is updated regularly.
Please check our website often for classroom information, monthly
newsletters and calendars, and important information that may be
posted on our site.
Laidlaw Lunch Program
Registration forms for the lunch program have been sent home.
In order to account for all students, every family must register
with the lunch program. Completed registr ations are to be
returned to the school by September 15th, along with the payment.
Milk Program/Lunch Coupons
An order form for sheets of milk coupons is included
in all newsletters. Individual milk tickets may also be
purchased in the school office at 11:45 am. White milk
is 75¢ and chocolate milk $1.00. Sheets are also availa-
ble; 20 white coupons for $15.00 and 20 chocolate
coupons for $20.00. See the back of the newsletter for
order forms.
Students who only stay occasionally for lunch may pre-purchase
casual lunch coupons from the school office. If a student is not
participating in the lunch program but would like to stay for lunch
periodically, a casual lunch coupon is required ($20.00/10 coupons
or $2.00 a day).
Microwave Availability/Utensils
A microwave is available to students in each classroom. In order
for all students to have access to the microwave, please do not send
any food that will require more than 2 minutes to heat. We would
also recommend that food be packed in microwave safe containers.
Would you please ensure that you provide all utensils that your
child will need for lunch, i.e. spoon, fork, etc. The lunch program
has a very limited supply available.
Allergies & Anaphylaxis (see information sheets)
At Laidlaw School, there are students with life-threatening
allergies that could result in an anaphylactic reaction. Several
classrooms have been designated as “reduced risk zones” due to
life threatening allergies to peanuts, nuts, and nut products. An
information letter will be sent to families with students in these
classrooms. In addition to knowing how to respond in an emer-
gency, parents and staff also need to be pro-active in avoidance
techniques:
Avoid peanuts, nuts and products with nut extracts within the
confines of the school.
Keep lunchroom and eating areas clean.
Instruct students in proper hand washing both before and
after eating.
Teach children not to trade or share food.
Monitor carefully food coming in for special celebrations.
All parents, staff and students need to be aware about
anaphylaxis, the appropriate action in an emergency and
avoidance.
We all play a part to ensure that Laidlaw School is a safe place
for students. All parents are encouraged not to send food
items containing peanuts.

What is the difference between tree nuts and peanuts? Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts
(pignolias), pistachio nuts and walnuts are all considered tree nuts. Peanuts are part of the legume family and are not considered a tree nut.
How can I know if a food contains tree nuts or peanuts? Read product ingredient labels carefully to make sure they don’t list any source of tree nuts or
peanuts in the food. Often, different names are used for tree nuts and peanuts.
See the Health Canada fact sheets found at the websites below for other common names to watch for on ingredient lists. Avoid foods and products that do not have an ingredient list.
Manufacturers may occasionally change their recipes or use different ingredients so read labels every time you shop. Be cautious of bulk food items as they may be contaminated with trace
amounts of nuts.
Watch out for allergen cross contamination Cross contamination is the transfer of an ingredient (food allergen) to a product that does not normally have that ingredient in it. Through cross contamination, a food that should not contain the allergen could become dangerous to eat for those who are allergic.
Cross contamination can happen: During food manufacturing through shared production and packaging equipment; At retail through shared equipment, e.g., cheese and deli meats sliced on the same
slicer; and through bulk display of food products, e.g., bins of baked goods, bulk nuts; and During food preparation at home or in restaurants through equipment, utensils and hands. For
example, if the knife used to put peanut butter on toast at breakfast is also used to make a sand-wich for lunch, without being washed well, the sandwich may have traces of peanuts and would be unsafe to send to a peanut aware school or child care setting.
Guidelines when dropping off / picking up your
children:
Drop off and pick up on Boreham Blvd. or Laidlaw Blvd.
Do not double park on Boreham Blvd or Laidlaw Blvd.
Do not let children off on the opposite side of the street.
City signs are posted for no stopping at any time.
Do not pull into the parking lot to drop off or pick up stu-
dents. This parking lot is for staff parking only.
Do not park in the designated “bus zone” at the front of
the school.
Please ensure you do not pass the school bus when it is
stopped and the “Stop” sign is out. The bus is loading or
unloading students at this time.
Please be reminded that children should not be
dropped off at school before 8:35 as they are not super-
vised before then.
Please help us to make Laidlaw School a safe environment
for all students to enter and exit the school.

Laidlaw Parent Advisory Council will be having their first
meeting on Tuesday, September 20th at 9:00 in the school
library. We welcome you to come, and get involved.
Our PAC is responsible for organizing the much loved Fun
Lunches, as well as many fun events throughout the school year.

Notes From The Music Room
There will be lots of exciting things happening over the
course of the year in the music room. As a new member to
the Laidlaw staff, I am looking forward to working with all
the students at Laidlaw and making music together!
I will be teaching all Kindergarten to Grade 5 students in
the new music room on Day 1, 2, 4 and 6 in the morning.

tions or concerns. I am looking forward to getting to know
all the Laidlaw families!

Subscription Online Resources for Students
Laidlaw School subscribes to a couple of databases for student use at school and at
home.
Tumble Book Library is a collection of interactive picture books. You can
choose to listen to a story, read along with a story or read the story on your own.
There are also games and activities included with many of the books.
Britannica Online is an online encyclopedia and image database. It has three levels of databases,
elementary, middle and high with adjustable reading levels. Students at Laidlaw School have the right to use
any images found on this database so it’s a great place to search images for projects.

Library Routines
All classes have a scheduled library period that
includes time for students to choose books to
borrow. The lending period is 1 cycle but since
not everyone reads at the same speed, students
are welcome to visit the library as needed to re-
turn, check out or renew books.

Strong Beginnings 2016-2017
What is Strong Beginnings? It is an assessment process designed to enhance assessment and planning, which begins in all classrooms on the first day of school and continues throughout the year. The Strong Beginnings as-sessments are not tests and therefore will not be graded. They are assessments to determine the lev-el at which each student is working so that the teacher can provide appropriate instruction to pro-mote learning and academic growth. How does Strong Beginnings work? On either Friday, September 16th or Monday, September 19th, each student from Kindergarten to Grade 9 will attend school by appointment for 60-90 minutes to participate in assessment activities in English Lan-guage Arts, Mathematics and Français, if applicable. (Details about each student’s appointment time and the assessment process will be provided by the school.) During this time, they will meet individually or in small groups with their teacher. This is an opportunity for teachers to gather data about each student’s learning that may not be evident during whole class assessment activities. It is also a chance to further build a positive student-teacher relationship. What will teachers learn through Strong Beginnings? Teachers working with their students in an atmosphere of support and encouragement will collect firsthand information on each of the students about:
how they learn; the learning strategies they possess and their approach to problem solving; their reading, writing and mathematical skills; their attitudes toward school and learning; their confidence as learners.
How will the assessment information be used?
To set goals for learning. Typically, information about your child is shared at conference time; however, if there is a need for specialized instruction, parents are contacted early in the fall term.
To enhance teachers’ instructional planning. To improve curriculum implementation.

Buses this Year
This year, Laidlaw School has two full-sized buses dropping off
and picking students. We have asked that the “Bus Zone-No
Parking” signs be moved to give enough room for both buses to
park. Until then, we are using orange pylons to indicate the bus
parking area. We ask that everyone please be respectful of this
area so that we can provide a quick and safe drop-off and pick-up
of students.
Dogs in School Yard
The start of this school year, more so than previous years, has had staff picking up
more dog feces from the school yard than they should really have to. We would like
to remind the community that, City of Winnipeg By-Law #2443/79 prohibits dogs on
school property. To help us with this problem, we have asked that “Animal Control”
drive by Laidlaw School when they are in the area. Our goal is to provide a clean
and safe play environment for all our students.
