• Find sources of information• Pull out the important information• Decide what you want to quote word for word• Decide what you want to paraphrase• BOTH OF THESE MUST BE CITED!• Use the information to back up your own

original point; don’t just repeat the source.

Find A Good Source

• Who wrote/published it?– Are they a trustworthy person/group?– Trust government, academic, well-known places

• When was it written?• Get as close to the source as possible• Is it Wikipedia?

Plagiarism

• Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else’s ideas as your own.

• You must give credit to anyone else’s ideas or words used in your writing.

• If you don’t, you are guilty of Plagiarism

Avoiding Plagiarism

*Are the author’s ideas and viewpoints clear? *Could another person understand the author’s main idea by

reading my paraphrase?*Is it the difference between the author’s ideas and my original

idea clear?*Have I quoted where necessary?* When paraphrasing, have I put the original into my own

words? * When using a writer’s idea, credit the author by name and also

cite the work in which you found the idea.

CITE YOUR QUOTES!

•At the end of your piece of writing, you should have a works cited. Use the full citation here. Easybib.com can help you with the format if .•In the text, follow your quotes with a parenthetical citation. The thing in parentheses is whatever is first in the full citation. (Usually the author’s last name, but sometimes the title if there is no author.) Follow that with a page number if there is one, or a line number in a long poem. (Websites won’t have page numbers.)

Academic Integrity

• The work that you submit in class needs to be your own work that you did on your own.

• When helping or getting help, make sure it is help and advice, not rewriting the paper.

• It is ok to talk about ideas, but students should not have papers that are the same or very similar. Use your own ideas, not your friend’s.
