“Happy” New Year It may surprise you, but there are some who limit their participation in temple
life to the High Holy Days. There are many things about that fact which sadden me, but it always strikes me as interesting that so many choose to make the High Holy Days as their singular Jewish experience of the year.
It’s true, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are extremely important. This annual gathering in temple requires us to take two days out of our normal routines at school and at work. While doing so, we each consider the paths our lives are on and the changes we need to make for ourselves to ensure we are living the values we should, and making the changes we must.
Creating that atmosphere during those two days, though, is a very serious endeavor. And the themes and emotions of the worship services for the Holy Days reflect that. So services are a bit longer and themes are usually quite sullen. Traditional liturgy encourages us to consider a proper path by reminding us of the One to whom we are responsible should we slack. If that weren’t enough, loved ones who have left this world are recalled, and their memories set an exceedingly high standard for us.
These days are days of sacrifice and hard work. Imagine it, for some this is their only experience of Jewish ritual year after year! How dreadfully depressing! At the same time we say to one another, “l’sha-nah tovah,” or “happy new year!” The dissonance leaves me somewhere between laughing and shaking my head in wonder.
The joy of the festivals and Shabbat, the commemorations which connect us to a long history, our amazing ritual traditions inherited from our ancestors over the course of thousands of years, the cultural heritage which connects us to love ones who form the past, and the opportunities for education and social gatherings for adults and children all must combine with the Holy Days to give us a bigger picture. When we encounter the Holy Days with the rest of the Jewish year in mind, we can begin to see how a year can truly be “happy.” After having done the hard work that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur requires of us, we can take the fruits of our efforts and incorporate them into the rest of the year.
All of this is easier said than done. To say “happy new year” and mean it during the Holy Days, we need to know that we have something to look forward to.
Temple Mount Sinai is more than a place for worship, and it is more than a place where our children learn to love Judaism. It is a place where we hope to make deep, life-long connections with one another, where we can come together with a shared set of values and a common, ancient historical narrative. It is a place to meet friends and neighbors, to not just come to services, but to go to dinner afterwards.
If you have attended any of the mifgashim we’ve been holding since my arrival, you’ll have noticed that as much as it is a chance for me to get to know the various groups within the community, it is a chance for people to simply be together. It has been remarkable to watch people connect and re-connect, to reminisce and to meet for the very first time.
Every year as Rosh Hashanah approaches, I know we all aim to live out the coming year in a happier and more meaningful way. It is an honor to echo back to you some of what I’ve been hearing as I’ve been meeting with members of the congregation. I’ve been hearing an interest in deeper commitment beyond the annual Holy Day pilgrimage. I’ve been hearing about the concerns of the community for its future, its young people. And I’ve been hearing the strong desire to connect to each other, for the temple to be more than a physical structure, but a meeting place for a community with strong relationships. So please look further in this month’s bulletin. You’ll see that there are many ways to get involved to make, create and help others maintain meaningful relationships with temple friends and family.
As we say l’shanah tovah in the coming days, I hope you’ll be inspired to see the many ways that Temple Mount Sinai can help make this year a happy one.

Religious School
The first day of Religious School was Sunday, August 30. We had a wonderful first session with
some old faces in attendance, as well as some new ones!
Although the school year has already begun, it is NOT too late to registration your child(ren).
We will not be having Religious School on Sunday, September 6 (Labor Day weekend), or Sunday,
September 13 (Erev Rosh Hashanah). Religious School, along with Hebrew School and B’nai Mitz-
vah class, will resume on Sunday, September 20.
MSTY & Mini-MSTY
Our Mount Sinai Temple Youth (MSTY, 9th-12th graders) had our annual Freshman
Kidnapping event on Thursday, August 20. At this event, incoming freshman are "kidnapped" by
the older MSTYites and taken to breakfast. About 15 students had a great breakfast at IHOP and
discussed ideas and plans for events for the upcoming year.
MSTY has been asked to come up to the bima for an Aliyah at the Rosh Hashanah Morning
Service. We would love for all of the MSTY teens to participate in this special honor.
The youth group will also be leading the Yom Kippur Afternoon Service on Wednesday,
September 23rd at 2:30 pm in Krupp Chapel. More details about the rehearsal time and arrival
time will be forthcoming - watch your email!
Mini- MSTY (our 6th-8th grade students) will be leading the Family Service on Yom Kippur on
Wednesday, September 23rd at 9 am in Krupp Chapel. Watch your email for details about
rehearsal times and arrival time.
New Temple Directory with Pictures!
The TMS membership directory is currently being updated. We thought it would add a
nice touch if we included a picture of each member next to their information in the book.
During the High Holy Days, before the evening services and the morning services, there will be photographers located in Zielonka Hall to take pictures of all of our members in at-tendance. Please plan to arrive a bit early - the photos will be taken between 7:15pm and 8pm prior to the evening services, and between 9:45am and 10:30 am prior to the morning services.

Letter from the President
Dear Temple Family,
Things are going so beautifully at temple that I wonder how our Jewish
New Year could get any better! The answer is simple: by continuing to work
together, support one another, and share our ideas, we can only grow
stronger as a community.
As I visit with so many of you, the conversation usually turns to an offer of
how you can help. The enthusiasm over Rabbi Zeidman’s arrival and the
opportunities that we are building on has created the desire to do more at
temple. There are a myriad of ways that you can volunteer and we want and
look forward to your participation. We are currently forming or re-
establishing many committees, so if you’re looking for a “New Year’s Resolution,” try one (or more) of
these:
Visit those who are homebound or in the hospital by joining the Caring Community committee
Deliver Welcome Baskets to new members
Help prepare the Oneg Shabbat on Fridays
Assist with membership events or help coordinate our annual fundraiser
Make telephone calls from home or help in the office
Volunteer to help on our Religious School committee
Join our Mitzvah Kitchen and help prepare meals for a member in need, Shiva Minyan cakes, or Shabbat-in-a-box
Deliver a D’var Torah, read Torah, or facilitate meditation or a Torah study group
Assist with Chevrah Kadisha
Write condolence, birthday or anniversary cards
Follow-up and contact potential members by inviting them to join you at Services
Join the choir
Serve on the Building Committee or help with grounds maintenance
Help prepare meals for Congregational Dinners
Assist with Taste of Shabbat at Monte Vista
There are many opportunities to help at temple and we will work with your schedules! If you would like
to help with any of the above or have some other areas of interest, please contact me. My cell phone is 915-
549-0719 or you can email me at [email protected]. I look forward to working with you in growing a
vibrant and happy congregation in the year ahead.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, our temple staff, and my family, I wish you a happy, healthy and
prosperous New Year.
L’Shanah Tovah,
Lori Gaman, President

Special Announcement from the Rabbi: Religious School Fees
During these first few weeks, I have heard a message again and again from members who are parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and from those who do not have children in their lives. I’d summarize it this way: the children of our community need to know they are part of something special, something amazing, and something that cherishes and values them and their families as part of this remarkable place.
For some, it is about the joy of the presence of children. For all, it is about assuring the continuity of our heritage and our congregation. I have heard this again and again during the first meetings I’ve been having with members of the congregation. If children aren’t welcome, if they aren’t aware of how important this is, then our time as a congregation is limited.
It seems that message had already reached the leadership of our congregation. Last month’s Board of Trustees meeting was one of the most powerful of my short rabbinic career. While it has long been the practice at Temple Mount Sinai to be accessible to everyone no matter their financial situation, sometimes the paperwork and the way an organization publishes its “fees” can mistakenly send a different message.
In acknowledging that sometimes there is a real or perceived barrier to participation of young people due to the way our Religious School fees schedule is published, the leadership asked us to change the message. We all know how embarrassing and difficult it is to make the call to explain we’re facing a financial challenge. So this year, the temple is asking member families to pay what they can for Religious School. We hope that those who are able to be generous will be. We hope that those who aren’t able to be as generous this year will hear the message: we want you and your children to be part of our community just as much. No matter how the registration form is filled out, we are glad to have the participation of students and their families.
In a letter responding to a Jewish legal question posed to him in 1873, great German rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch points out:
“The law of Torah obligates us [as a community] concerning the absolute importance of [educating all of the community’s children…] And what has been true at all times has been elevated into a matter of unparalleled importance at the present moment. The holy concerns of Judaism will, God forbid, be abandoned completely if we do not succeed in arousing enthusiasm among children […] for Torah and worship, and if we do not raise them to become proper Jews. For they are […] exposed to the great temptations of the time, and are likely to be the first who will be lost to the community of Israel if they do not acquire a broad knowledge through the spirit of the illuminating and exciting Torah.”¹ Though Samson Raphael Hirsch was writing in Europe during the 1870s from an orthodox
Jewish perspective, the message still resonates clearly for our community in El Paso today. For a long time the temple has made a commitment to ensure that our students have a meaningful experience as a part of a special congregation. I know we all hope this means families will see how welcome they are no matter their current financial capabilities. We believe in this place enough to know that connections will grow and deepen, and we will all realize the importance of our temple. We pray at the moments when each of us are able to be generous, we will be inspired to see to the continuity of our Jewish community.

dam,” The Edah Journal 3:2, Elul 5763/2003.

Our Prayer Book Fund enables us to purchase and replace prayer books for our congrega-
tion. After 37 years, this will be the last year that we will be praying from the Gates of Re-
pentance. If you would like a commemorative copy of this prayer book, one will be re-
served for you following the holidays. Your $18 donation will help Temple fund the new-
est High Holy Day prayer book, Mishkan HaNefesh.

WRJ/Sisterhood
WRJ/Sisterhood’s first meeting was held on Tuesday, August 4, and we had very good attendance. We discussed the holidays and some future events. We will be having apples and honey on Erev Rosh Hashanah and also after the children’s service the next morning. Next on the agenda is “Break the Fast” after the concluding services on Yom Kippur. Sisterhood will also have Sukkot goodie bags for the children in Religious School and holiday boxes will be sent to college students away from home. Membership letters have been sent, and please join us and participate in our many ac-tivities. We are planning a membership luncheon for paid-up members. Please let me know if there is someone new to our area who might want to join. For more information, contact Wendy Axelrod, Sisterhood president at (915) 833-5779 or [email protected].

The JWV Post 749 participated in the Tour de Tolerance this past Sun-
day. The Tour de Tolerance is hosted by the El Paso Holocaust Museum
and Study Center. Twelve Post members set up a watering station at the
50 km point. We had great fun passing out apples, bananas, water and
Gatorade to the cyclists. We also assisted one cyclist who had a flat tire
with getting back to the starting point at Sunland Park Racetrack and Ca-
sino. For information on becoming a member and joining in the fun, see

B’nai Shabbat - September 11 and 25, 5:30 pm
On select Friday evenings, we hold “B’nai Shabbat” (“Kids’ Shabbat”), a Shabbat experience
for young children and their families. Toys, songs, prayers, a story, and a snack are all part of our
time together. At the conclusion, all are welcome to join the rest of the congregation in Zielonka
Hall for a snack! B’nai Shabbat is geared toward children through kindergarten age, but all are
welcome. Our September services will be on Fridays, September 11 and 25 at 5:30 pm.

El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center is proud to partner with The General
Pulaski Society of El Paso to host “Poland’s Heroes of the Holocaust, Featuring Jan Karski” –
a presentation of dual traveling exhibits, “They Risked Their Lives – Poles who Saved Jews
during the Holocaust” and “Jan Karski: The World Knew.” The private opening of the
exhibits will be Tuesday, September 1 at 6:00 pm, in observance of the anniversary of the
invasion of Poland by the Nazis on September 1, 1939. Consul General of the Republic of
Poland in Los Angeles, Mariusz Brymora, will officially open the exhibit and give remarks
during the private opening. Dr. Z. Anthony Kruszewski, General Pulaski Society member
and professor emeritus of Political Science at The University of Texas at El Paso will also give
remarks on the exhibit. Dr. Kruszewski was also a member of the Polish Underground
during World War II and participated in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The exhibit will open
to the public on September 2 and will be on display through November 1.
“Poland’s Heroes of the Holocaust, Featuring Jan Karski” tells the true accounts of people
who risked their lives and the lives of their families to rescue Jewish men, women, and
children during the Holocaust. They are stories of great courage in the face of impending
persecution and the threat of lethal punishment. “They Risked Their Lives – Poles Who
Saved Jews during the Holocaust” is based on over 400 interviews conducted with Poles who
saved Jews, relating the scale and circumstances of these acts of rescue, as well as the
motivation behind them, and the fates of those involved. “The World Knew” takes a deeper
look at one such Righteous individual, Jan Karski, who took great risk to secretly enter the
Warsaw Ghetto and the Izbica transit camp to witness the persecution and extermination of
Polish Jewry. Karski took his information to Great Britain and the United States to appeal to
heads of government to act on behalf of the Jews. In conjunction with the special exhibit,
EPHM’s Book Club will also focus on the story of Karski for its September 20th Book Club
discussion. Dr. Kruszewski will lead the discussion on Story of a Secret State: My Report to the
World, written by Jan Karski.
