Is the class familiar with the genre of PLAY? Getting the class to understand what the genre of PLAY is. Basic drama games and conventions may be introduced if teacher is confident of execution. Introduction: Peranakan Culture Peranakan Museum Visit in Week 3/4 OR Student research into Peranakan Culture of SEA Who are the nonyas and the babas? Student research into Singapore in the 1950s Teacher – Student exchanges on:

Family and what it means to you. Relationship between you and your parents. What hopes and aspirations do your parents have of you? Talking about parent-child relationships in general.

04 – 10 Introduction to the genre – PLAY What are the interesting aspects to look out for in a PLAY? Setting / Trouble / Action / Resolution STRUCTURE

Introduce and familiarize students with the general structure of a “well-made” play –

Note: There are variations and breakthrough in modern play. Emily is an example. SETTING

the play. FLOW Play is performed not always in a linear fashion as Emily does not pretend to relate her story as such. She picks her way through and waves her stories with specific foci and flashbacks. STYLE Play is monologue - as the playwright herself puts it – A One-woman Play VIEWPOINT Story told from Emily’s point of view. Immediately personal and one-sided. A lot of trust and love involved in recalling and retelling the story. Treatment of Text – ACT ONE

PLAY AND SHOW TIME Special Note:

Dramatization of Important scenes Transforming a monologue into a conventional play by

introducing voice parts to other significant characters, such as Richard and Suzie.

* Some students may have problems dealing with the chronology of significant events which are highlighted by Emily. Use this stretch of time to help students put the events on a timeline so that any confusion caused by Emily’s flashbacks (especially abundant in Act Two) may be defused.
