THE DIGITAL DISCONNECT

The first article I researched was called the Digital Disconnect. This article was written all the way back in 2002! I find this very amusing that they have found a disconnect of learning with the internet in 2002 and it still feels like a huge problem in 2011. That is 9 years, and not much has changed!

SOME STUDENTS FEEL RESTRICTED…

“A lot of time when you use the Internet at school, you’ll get on a site – even for educational purposes – and you’ll be blocked out…They don’t think you can handle it, so it hinders your research.  I went on to the history page and I typed this thing about a country that I was doing and they wouldn’t let me see it and it happened four times and it got on my nerves so I stopped using the Internet for [the project].” – High School Boy (Arafeh).

Ultimately, I find this interesting to look back and see that they noticed the problem 9 years ago, but since then not much progress has been made. I think more of schooling should be done online, especially college courses, it would be much cheaper and effective. There would still be courses to take on campus like math, that would be hard to teach online.

The article shows that the use of the internet between students at school and out of school for educational purposes varies very greatly.

EDUCATOR RESOURCES

This article is more of a list of top educational resources that involve using the internet. A lot of them are pretty common but I never heard of some of them. Here is a list of a few of them.

1. Evernote - Evernote is one of those services and apps that I can't live without any more. I use it for organizing my lesson plans, notes, web clippings, and so much more.

2. Google Chrome - Google's Chrome browser is a fast, secure, stable web browser that I love using. It works great with all of Google's services that I use (like Blogger, Calendar etc.)

3. Dropbox - Dropbox is a file sync and storage system that allows you to keep files in sync across multiple computers and backed up on their servers.

SOME OF THE SERVICES SUGGESTED

I personally have found this list to be very helpful. I knew of a lot of the things mentioned, but when you click on the links on the site, the author explains them in more detail and even how to get them. This is extremely useful and showed me a couple new tricks!

Any aspiring teacher should give this list a read through, its not very long, so its not a burden to check out!

IPADS?

A university called Seton Hill offers its college students iPads. This is very exciting, to see that some universities are stepping up.

This will improve learning and be more cost efficient. Also, “The iPad will lighten the backpacks of Seton Hill University students,” said JoAnne W. Boyle, president of Seton Hill University,  in an e-mail message to The Chronicle. (Laster).

This is not the first university to do this. They are actually offering macbook pros as well. Duke University even gave away ipods to students even when they first came out.

Someone noted that having the iPad would lighten student’s backpacks, but also make their wallets heavier. In a sense, what they mean is that books should be much cheaper if you can download them to the iPad.

In conclusion, I wish that IUPUI would give away iPads.

I hope that hint gets across. This would take teaching and intergation of education and technology to a whole new level. The possibilities are endless! Thanks in the future IUPUI.

AS YOU CAN SEE

We have a long way to go with getting technology in the classroom and doing it properly. I hope that this can be greatly improved upon in the next few years. Part of it is getting the teachers more comfortable with using it, because the students for the most part know how to do many things using technology and are eager to learn more.

Thank you for your time and attention, I hope this has inspired you to become more pro-active in using technology in positive ways.
