What is Tourism?
• “Tourism is the temporary movement of people
to destinations outside their normal places of
work and residence, the activities undertaken
during their stay in those destinations, and the
facilities created to satisfy to their needs”
About Tourism• Tourism is the fastest growing industry in this
world because it is one of the best methods of
earning foreign currency.
• Tourism has become one of the most appreciated
source of income for many countries of the world.
• Tourism can be defined as the movement of
people from one place to another for varied
purposes and the business associated with it.
• Tourism is on the increase because the
affordability of the people around the globe has
increased and the lifestyle and the perception of
life have changed greatly.
Early travelers migrated for food and hunting
Increased interest in travel for commerce and pleasure. Goal was to experience the “civilized world” and study the arts and sciences
Growth in travel for business reasons.
Invention of automobile and airplane expanded freedom to travel
Development of mass tourism

The major focus was to develop tourism
infrastructure in this regions.

Beautiful South – Aggressive marketing has helped achieve over 25% growth in tourism in southern states. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are witnessing an increase in foreign tourists.
Cultural tourism & Round Trips –covering the popular circuits comprising of the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan & in South the well known temples, backwaters & beaches.
Mass tourism – Goa is a tourism based economy and a leader in this sector, is all set to promote mass tourism. Goa also won the 2nd most popular winter destination in UK.

care in UK is very expensive. India has well-
trained doctors who will work for a lower fee
than they could expect abroad.
• Medical tourism offers people the option of knee replacements, hip replacements, heart care, cosmetic & dental surgery in India.
• Hundreds of people have treatment abroad, saving them a great deal of money in treatment costs.
Advantages of TourismIt provides direct employment for people associated with occupations in bars, hotels, tour guides, etc.
Tourism provides the much needed foreign currency and foreign investment.
It provides more money to the country can improve its infrastructure which is a benefit for local people.
Disadvantages of Tourism
Tourists cause pollution and can damage
the environment.
E.g. Visual and noise pollution
If for any other political reason,
tourists are discouraged to come into the country, then the Govt will suffer a huge
loss.
Tourists don’t always respect
traditional cultures.
We can conclude by
saying that even
though tourism carries
a lot of disadvantages
with its development,
many countries to
depend on this
industry because this
industry does not
require a lot of literacy
and also it yields
maximum profit with
less investment.
