Finding the Target Audience

Do you watch soaps?

16-24 24-3540-55 55+

In order to locate target audience we took a survey of which age was most interested in soaps. Asking the same number of people of different ages, we found that the most people that answered yes the do watch soaps was the 16-24 group.

From this we decided that E4 would be the best channel to broadcast on.

“E4 is the UK’s most watched digital channel among 16-34 year olds”

Audience In order to make a successful soap I needed to know the type of

trailer audiences wanted. This is what I got from the audience research

“The storylines need to be relatable”

“Needs to have storyline of someone going through something similar or worse to an average audience ; catharsis”

“Needs interweaving storylines – parallel narratives”

“Soap is a feminine genre”

Trailer Feedback From the rough cut of the trailer I received this

feedback

“Good choice of music and clips”

“The way the transitions are used creates drama”

“Needs to make some of the storylines clearer”

“Music transitions need to be smoother”

“Cut some of the clip lengths”

“Make the dialogue clearer to hear”

To improve the trailer I added title cards. This was to make the story and narratives clearer to the audience, and create the atmosphere I wanted the trailer to have. The also edited in well with my soundtrack I had used.

I also used Garage Band software to make the transitions between the music smoother, instead of the i-movie music player.

FeedbakWould you watch the trailer?

YesNo

I generally got quite a good response from the audience, with the majority saying they would watch the soap if it came out. This gave me confidence that the trailer was relatively successful, and that the changes I had made were for the better.
