Celebrations Around the KingdomDecember is a month filled with festivity and for good reason. On the 16thand 17th Bahrainis around the island will join together to celebrate BahrainsNational Day.Bahrain formally declared its independence on the 15th of August 1971,marked by the signing of a friendship treaty with the British that terminatedprevious agreements between the two sides. Although, August 15 is the actualdate on which Bahrain gained its independence from the British, the state doesnot celebrate or mark that date. Instead, the state annually celebrates the 16thof December as National Day to coincide with former ruler Isa bin SalmanAl Khalifas accession to the throne. The red colour fill the streets, fireworks, laser shows, colourful floats, carnivals, and concerts are among the major events organized to celebratethis day and the two days are declared as public holidays across the entireKingdom.Alkoun Magazine congratulates the people and government of Bahrainled by His Royal Majesty Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness PrimeMinister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Highness the CrownPrince & Deputy Supreme Commander Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. 16 . . . . 14 2002 1971 17 . . . . . . . .12 13 8. Linking the Pastwith the PresentBahrain is believed to be the site of the ancientland of the Dilmun civilization. Bahrain came underthe rule of successive Persian empires, the Parthiansand Sassanids empires respectively. Bahrain wasone of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628AD. Following a successive period of Arab rule, thePortuguese occupied the country in 1521. Shah AbbasI of the Safavid Empire later expelled the Portuguese,in 1602.In 1783, the Bani Ubtah tribe captured Bahrainfrom the Persians and was ruled by the Al KhalifaRoyal Family since, with Ahmed al Fateh being thefirst hakim of Bahrain. In the late 1800s, followingsuccessive treaties with the British, Bahrain becamea protectorate of the United Kingdom. Followingthe withdrawal of the British from the region in thelate 1960s, Bahrain declared independence in 1971.Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in2002.Oil was discovered in Bahrain in 1932 (the firstin the Arabian side of the Gulf). In recent decades,Bahrain has sought to diversify its economy and be lessdependent on oil by investing in the banking sectorand tourism. Manama is home to many large financialstructures, including the Bahrain World Trade Centerand the Bahrain Financial Harbour. One can truly absorb Bahraini culture, as there is muchto see around the island. There are many ancient landmarks, which dig into Bahrains lengthy history such as the BahrainFort or Qalat al-Bahrain. It has been an archeological siteand excavations have been on going since 1954. The fortwas once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and wasinscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.The archaeological finds unearthed in the fort revealmuch about the history of the country. It is believed thatthe area was occupied for some 5000 years and containsa valuable insight into the copper and Bronze Ages ofBahrain. The present fort dates from the sixth century AD.The capital of the Dilmun civilization, Dilmun was knownas the land of immortality and the ancestral place ofSumerians, a place where the Gods met. The site has beentermed as Bahrains most important site in antiquity.Metal artifacts found were limited to copper pieces,a socketed spearhead, fishing tools; a workshop was alsoidentified where copper casting two piece moulds andwax moulds were found. Small and large crucibles usedfor melting of the metal were recovered in substantialquantities indicative of large-scale manufacture byprofessional artisans. This is also indicative of trading insuch copper ware with Oman and Mesopotamia. Stampseals of the Dilmun type were also recovered from theexcavations. The Bahrain Fort has been part of Bahrains civilizationsfor centuries, and it is important to upkeep it as it onelandmark, which truly links the islands past with thepresent.Another marvel to visit and, which has been part ofBharains long history is the Tree of Life. Said to have beenranked high on the new 7 wonders of the world list, theTree of Life in Bahrain is a remarkable natural phenomenonthat has to be witnessed by those who visit Bahrain. TheTree of Life stands alone with almost majestic flair, milesaway from other vegetation and with no apparent sourceof water. The Tree of Life in Bahrain is a mesquite treethat has grown at the highest point in Bahrain for over 400years. The mystery of the survival of the tree has made ita legend. The local inhabitants believe with heart and soulthat this was the actual location of the Garden of Eden. The Tree of Life or Sharajat-al-Hayat, as theArabs call it, is located 2 kilometers away from JebelDukhan. The tree stands lonely in the heart of desert,on top of a 25-foot-high sandy hill. The tree of lifehas continued growing-despite the extremities of theclimate. At present it is 32 feet in height. The treessource of water is a mystery. Plant scientist may saythat its roots go very deep and wide to get water fromthe reserves of sweet springs kilometers away. TheBedouins believe that Enki, the mythical God of water, had showered its blessing. Over 50 000 tourists havevisited the tree, and many have inscribed their namesinto the old wooden bark.Bahrain holds much historical and cultural heritage, and today it is preserved in such away that peoplefrom all over the world and its own future generationsare able to admire and learn from the past.14 15 9. . 628 . 1521 . 1602 1783 . . . 1800 1971. . 2002 1932 ) (. . . . 1954. 2005 . .. 5000 . . . . . . . . . .. . 400 . . 2. 25 .. 32 . . . 50.000 . .16 17 10. Christian Testot, the Ambassador of France,Strengthens Diplomatic Relationswith theKingdom of Bahrain.38Alkoun Magazine had the great honour of interviewing H.E. ChristianTestot the Ambassador of France to the Kingdom of Bahrain and his wifeMrs Zeina Testot in order to find out more about the diplomatic relationshipbetween France and Bahrain.H.E. Christian Testot stated to Alkoun Magazine The values of theFrench Republic on freedom, equality and brotherhood are the base ofthe wonderful and exceptional relationship with the Kingdom of Bahrain. The relation has developed throughout the years to form a strategicpartnership, based on the interests of the two countries, the trustand friendship that grew between them touched all areas and sectors, diplomatic consultation, cooperation and coordination on regional issues. He also said, I am proud to represent France in Bahrain, and the staffand I are looking forward to strengthen the friendship and cooperationbetween the two countries.H.E. Mr Testot added, There are strong bilateral relations betweenBahrain and France as well as the encouraging investment opportunitiesbetween France and GCC countries and I stress that Bahrain representsan attractive investment environment. The cooperation between thetwo countries are not only on an educational level but also extends tovarious other levels particularly heritage, culture and economy. 21. 40Bahrain an attractive investment environmentWhat is your vision towards the investmentopportunities, banking and the estate systembetween the two countries?I believe the investment opportunities between thetwo countries are promising due to an investmentenvironmental atmosphere, the strategic locationof Bahrain and its diverse culture and civilization, allows it to become the gate of the Arabian Gulf. There are so many possibilities, opportunities andavailable ingredients to encourage the establishmentof joint ventures and we look forward to openingnew horizons of joint cooperation in the sectors oftrade, industry and investment. How do you find the investment incentivesoffered by the Kingdom of Bahrain? And do themany benefits and facilities granted by the Bahrainigovernment for all investors ensure an attractiveinvestment environment?I consider the several incentives, benefits andthe numerous investment facilities grantedby the Kingdom of Bahrain for all investors tobe the guarantors of an attractive investmentenvironment. In addition to the characteristic of theKingdom of Bahrain to diversify its economic baseand it welcomes the promotion and developmentaspects and prospects of joint cooperation withFrance through investment in all service sectors, commercial, industrial and cultural. What future plans do you have in order to advancethe relationship between the two countries?I am thinking of a range of exciting activities anddynamic events that will be witnessed across theKingdom to confirm the strength of Bahraini Frenchrelations, and showcase the French cousin, as wellas artistic shows presented by famous French artcelebrities, French folklore shows in addition toart galleries, fashion shows and distinctive Frenchmovies. An unprecedented recovery of the French cinemaThe French Culture Center in Bahrain is showingFrench films and there is an increase interest byBahrainis, especially the young ones, since theFrench cinema moved away from realistic novels, which made the glory for the cinema in theseventies towards adventures movies? The figures confirm that French cinema isunprecedented and booming with the numberof movies produced that exceeds 230 movies perannum and the number of viewers reaching millions,in addition to the increase of annual income. Allindications show that French cinema is developingand having a successful career, at the same timemaintaining its novelist character, realism, depth, richness and humour, without denying there arecommercial movies. The prospects of the French languageThere is an argument in Bahrain about teaching theFrench language in the schools, what is your visionwith this regard and its prospect of the Frenchlanguage? The introduction of the French language inthe curriculum will provide jobs and new jobopportunities in Bahrain. There are 50 to 60French language teachers working for the Ministryof Education. We are expecting the number ofstudents studying in French universities to noticeablyincrease in the coming years, currently there are only50 to 60 students studying on their own expenses. There is an opportunity to study at a Frenchuniversity free for all Bahraini students and there areneither entry exams nor complicated proceduresfor applicants. The only expense the student needsto pay is BD50 per semester plus living costs.Additionally the French universities offer a widerange of specialties in various fields including science, technology, law, literature, history and other studies.I consider it an investment in intelligent students toenrich the world with outstanding scientific minds.Diplomacy and LoveAlkoun Magazine asked the Ambassadors wife MrsZeina Testot about her role in support toward herhusband? There is an important role to the wife ofthe ambassador or diplomat as she carries aresponsibility to represent her country andintroduce the civilization, culture and achievementof her country. I would say there are three levels ofthe wifes role: strengthen the relationship betweenthe country diplomats wife and the host country, through participation in social, cultural and charitableactivities between the two countries. Secondlythrough strengthening the relation between hercountry and other countries represented in the hostcountry by mutual participating in national, socialand cultural celebration, in addition convergenceof views in order to promote dialogue amongcivilizations and not conflict. Thirdly strengthen therelation with the French community by organizing ajoint work between the women of the communityand the embassy, celebrating the national, culturalevents, encouraging the competencies of womenin the community to participate effectively in theembassys events and give a bright picture for thecountry. You have a young daughter that will soon graduatefrom high school of Tourism, however you andyour husband look just married?I am glad my relationship with my husband flourished,it is a close relation due to the friendship we hadsince we were both French Embassy staff in Syria. What do you think of Bahrain since you firstarrived? It has been a year since we moved here and Ifound the Bahraini community very distinguished.I was surprised with Bahrains high efficiency, ingenuousness, hospitality and generosity. I wouldlike to give my sincere appreciation and respectto H.H. Princess Sabika Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa forher generosity in this beautiful country. Vacheron ConstantinCelebrates its100th Anniversary88The new Malte collection celebrating 100 yearsof the tonneau shape at Vacheron Constantin, simplycould not ignore the most iconic of all horologicalcomplications: the tourbillon. A perfect embodimentof the expertise of the master-watchmakers of theManufacture, the tourbillon serves to compensatefor the effects of gravity on timepieces.Vacheron Constantin has long since demonstratedits know-how in the field of the tourbillon movement.Often associated with another complications, thetourbillons from the Geneva-based manufacturerreveal remarkable know-how and undeniable audacity. It is in this spirit that Vacheron Constantin offers anew interpretation of this stunning complication inkeeping with the classic style and elegance inherentto this anniversary collection. On a pure, restrained dial featuring pink goldhour-markers and Roman numerals for the 6 and 12oclock indications, the tourbillon bearing the secondshand finds its natural place, perfectly integrated withinthe new and refined lines of the Malte collection. Itspositioning at 6 oclock calls requires slightly offsettingthe axis of the hour and minute hands which therebystand out above their beating heart. The Malte Tourbillon timepiece the largest inthe collection has a curving 18K pink gold casemeasuring 38 x 48.2 mm and is fitted with a brownMississippiensis alligator leather strap complete withMaltese cross-shaped rose gold folding clasp.Such an exceptional watch deserved an equallyexceptional movement, and this model is dulyequipped with mechanical hand-wound Calibre 2795,comprising 246 parts, beating at a frequency of 2.5Hz (18,000 vibrations/hour) and endowed with analmost two-day power reserve. This new tonneau-shaped movement makinga perfect fit with the case is entirely developedand crafted within the Manufacture. The tourbilloncarriage is inspired by the brands signature Maltesecross, and magnificently showcases the exceptionallevel of finishing of each movement part, including anumber of naturally hand-bevelled interior angles. The rounding off of the tourbillon bar, which alwaysrepresents a significant technical challenge, calls forover 11 hours of manual work in order to meet thefinishing criteria demanded by Vacheron Constantin.Rounding off consists of filing each end of the arms inorder to give them a conical or semi-cylindrical shape, while respecting the limits of the centre and the heels. To finalise this operation, the craftsmen rub it downwith stones, buffs, wooden pegs and finishing pastesin order to achieve a perfectly polished effect. The Malte Tourbillon model also meets the newcriteria of the Hallmark of Geneva. Instated in 1886by the Grand Council of the Republic and Canton ofGeneva, the Hallmark of Geneva is a guarantee oforigin, of craftsmanship, of durability and of expertise. This unique quality label has just undergone afundamental transformation, since the certification nolonger concerns the calibre alone, but the timepieceas a whole. This new approach represents a major evolutionof this independent certification that has enjoyed thelongstanding support of Vacheron Constantin andwhich has just decided to respond more fully thanever before to the legitimate expectations of an evermore informed clientele.89 46. The Legend of the Chinese ZodiacIntroducing an extraordinary new opus in the on-goingsaga of the Mtiers dArt collection, VacheronConstantin presents The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac a series of captivating timepieces based on the 12-year cycle. It begins with the Year of the Snake model, asymbol of the periodical nature of time, of seduction andof refinement.China, a land with which Vacheron Constantin firstbegan establishing a trust-based relationship from1845 onwards, is famous for a number of discoveriesincluding the invention of paper. It also initiated the artof paper cutting or Jianzhi, the animals of the Chinesezodiac provide a remarkable demonstration of theart of using full and empty spaces. A challenge thatVacheron Constantin has taken up and translatedinto the field of watchmaking thanks to the skill of itsexperienced artisans. Engravers and enamellers haveworked in alternating pairs on the Year of the Snake, models crafted in pink gold or platinum and issuedin two 12-piece limited series exclusively availablethrough the brands own-name Boutiques. The leaf motif appearing on the dial and stemmingfrom classic Chinese iconography is etched directlyin the metal. The pattern remains semi-embeddedand stands out from its gold base by a subtle stagesetting of variously accentuated reliefs creating adepth effect. The raised leaves appear to be floatingover the dial. With the snake engraving, on whichcrafting the scales alone represents at least 30 hoursof work, the artisan provides a tangible expression ofthe artistic vision behind this creation. Then comes the stage of Grand Feu enamelling, atechnique invented in Geneva and which remainsthe exclusive preserve of a rare breed of artisans. Byapplying the enamel in successive layers, the enamelspecialist further enhances the visual intensity of theblue or bronze-toned dial. The snake is delicately applied to the centre of thedial, poised as if ready to spring through the sapphirecrystal and thus creating a truly striking effect. MtiersdArt The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac collectionowes its superb scope for expressing the artisticcrafts to Calibre 2460 G4. All its parts are treated toexceptionally sophisticated finishing that meets thecriteria laid down by the Hallmark of Geneva oneof the highest tokens of horological craftsmanshipcreated in 1886 and recognised around the world.Dancers of the Brazilian show troupe A Taste of Brazil, dressed in colourful costumes will leave you spellbound withtheir fantastic dance shows on the New Years eve party. Duomtre UniqueTravel TimeSince 1833, every watch bearing the Jaeger-LeCoultre signature is crafted withthe same passion, guided by a constant quest for technical enhancement. Eachmasterpiece, heir to 180 years of expertise, benefits from state-of-the-art research.A fresh interpretation of the revolutionary Dual-Wing movement created byJaeger-LeCoultre, the Duomtre Unique Travel Time watch reflects the technicalbreakthroughs achieved by the Manufacture in the field of GMT watches and offersoriginal solutions to travellers with a love of Fine Watchmaking. For the first time ever on a world time watch, this model enables the user to adjustthe time in the travel time zone to the nearest minute. The worldtime function thusenables travellers to adjust their time-zone display to all continents and countries, whatever the time-zone difference. For this new movement, the Dual-Wing system is divided into two distinctmechanisms: the first is devoted to displaying the local time, and the second to showthat in a second time zone. The two mechanisms share the same regulating organbut each has its own independent source of energy, thereby avoiding the losses dueto interaction between the mechanisms. The operation of the dual time-zone displaydoes not in any way influence the running of the watch, a fact that considerablyenhances the precision of the watch. Each mechanism has a 50-hour power reserve and, governed by a wish to achieveideal user- friendliness, the same crown serves to wound both barrels. The effect I achieve with thistechnique opens the eyes and createsa sweet doe eye look.Cream blushes can be great in winterbecause they can easily be used with thefinger and melt into the skin. Think abouthow your skin would naturally flush if youwent for a jog or took a brisk walk in thecold. It looks fresh, and these types of toneslook great on any skin tone.My final word of advice is that womenshould really follow their own individualideas when it comes to their make-up. Itshould ultimately be a reflection of theirpersonal style.Maria SlinkinaMake Up Artist & [email protected] I [email protected] of Beauty102 53. Taking up CapoeiraThere comes a time in our lives when we may decideto pick up a martial art, not only do you keep fit butyou also learn the fundamentals of the art. There are somany martial arts that one can choose from, howeverCapoeira has recently begun to take the world by storm. What is Capoeira?Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combineselements of dance and music. Mainly descendants ofAfrican salves created it in Brazil with Brazilian nativeinfluences, dating back to the 16th century. The artis known to by its quick and complex moves, usingmainly power, speed and leverage for leg sweeps. Theart is focused on fighting when in an outnumbereddisadvantage. Slaves who used it to disguise the factthat they were practising fight moves developed it.Capoeira is played (it is known as the game, or jogo)in a circle called a roda, accompanied by music andsinging. Only the hands and feet touch the floor. The TechniqueThe ginga (rocking back and forth to swing) is thefundamental movement in capoeira, important bothfor attack and defense purposes. It has two mainobjectives. One is to keep the capoeirista in a stateof constant motion, preventing him or her from beinga still and easy target. The other, using also fakes andfeints, is to mislead, fool, trick the opponent, leavingthem open for an attack or a counter-attack.The attacks in the Capoeira should be donewhen opportunity arises and must be decisive, like adirect kick in the face or a vital body part, or a strongtakedown. Most Capoeira attacks are made with thelegs, like direct or swirling kicks, or knee strikes. Thehead strike is a very important counter-attack move.Elbow strikes, punches and other forms of takedownscomplete the main list. The defense is based on the principle of non-resistance,meaning avoiding an attack using evasivemoves instead of blocking it. Avoids are calledesquivas, which depend on the direction of theattack and intention of the defender, and can be donestanding or with a hand leaning on the floor. A blockshould only be made when the esquiva is not possible.A series of rolls and acrobatics like cartwheels allowsthe capoeirista to quickly overcome a takedown ora loss of balance, and to position themselves aroundthe aggressors in order to lay up for an attack. It isthis combination of attacks, defense and mobility, which gives Capoeira its perceived fluidity andchoreography-like style.Capoeira TodayCapoeira nowadays is not only a martial art, butan active exporter of Brazilian culture all over theworld. Since the 1970s Capoeira masters began toemigrate and teach it in other countries. Presentin many countries in every continent, every yearCapoeira attracts to Brazil thousands of foreignstudents and, often, foreign capoeiristas work hard tolearn the official Brazilian language, Portuguese, in aneffort to better understand and become part of theart. Renowned Capoeira Masters are often invitedto teach abroad or even establish their own schools.Capoeira presentations, normally theatrical, acrobaticand with little martiality, are common sights in thewhole world. The martial art aspect is still present and, like oldtimes, is still subtle and disguised, leading many non-practitionersto ignore its presence. Trickery is everpresent and expert capoeiristas never take their sightsoff their opponents in a Capoeira game. An attackcan be disguised even as a friendly gesture. Symbolof the Brazilian culture, symbol of the ethnic amalgamthat characterizes Brazil, symbol of resistance to theoppression, Capoeira definitely changed its imageand became a source of pride to Brazilian people. Itis officially considered intangible cultural heritage ofBrazil. So do not be put off joining a capoeira class becauseyou are not a gymnast or acrobat. Beginners are notexpected to be able to do cartwheels and handstandsfrom the outset. However, your fitness will build fromday one and after a few months of training, you mightbe surprised what you can do. Capoeira allows youto develop your own individual style as you can bringyour personality to it rather than trying to look thesame as the opponent. It is also better to feel for themovements, rather than watching your actions in themirror, which can make you feel self-conscious.Capoeira is not just a form of exercise; it is morelike an art form and takes years to learn. Expect totake a year to be ready to take your first grading(and receive your first belt, or corda). As you getmore advanced, it may take two to three years toprogress to the next level. Do not feel you have torush - enjoy the journey. Although capoeira classesare more widely available now, not all are taught bytrained instructors with appropriate experience. Ittakes seven years to train as an instructor, and it takeseven longer to become a master or mestre. Beforecommitting yourself to a particular teacher, first askwhat training and experience they have had.Capoeira as with other martial arts will benefit yourbody and mind. As you will be keeping your self inshape and at the same time be able to deal with yourevery day stress in a completely different way.114 115 59. . . .
