POTENTIAL DRIVERS BEHIND VOLUME DIFFERENCE•  The northeast winter storms were individual

occurrences, whereas the California drought is ongoing.•  Much of the discussion and coverage of both topics

stemmed from online news that covered scientific articles. There were more mentions of scientific articles concerning the California drought that there were about the Northeast winter storms.

•  69% of mentions about scientific proof discussed the California Drought situation, while 31% of them focused on the Northeast winter storms.

•  This may be because the California drought has been going on for a number of years, giving scientists more time to study potential causes, whereas the Northeast winter storms’ duration was much shorter.
