2014-15 @JavelinaMBB Game Notes

Javelinas Picked to Finish Sixth in LSCTexas A&M University-Kingsville was picked to finish sixth in Lone Star Conference preseason poll. Kingsville earned 59 votes in the loaded LSC. No. 10 Tarleton State University was named the preseason favorites, earning 12 of the total 22 first-place votes (156 total votes). Midwestern State University followed with five first-place votes and 155 total. The Texans and Mustangs shared the LSC title with identical 12-2 records last season, and for the third consecutive season, met in the finals of the LSC Championship. TSU edged MSU 71-65 to defend its tournament title. Additionally, MSU’s Xavier Blackburn was named Preseason Player of the Year, earning six of the 22 votes. Blackburn earned second-team All-LSC honors last season and led the Mustangs to a sixth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. Angelo’s Chris Johns and A&M-Com-merce’s LaDon Carnegie received four votes apiece and Davene Carter of TSU tallied three. Five players collected one vote each.

Angelo State University checked in at No. 3 with 134 votes and one first-place nod and A&M-Commerce earned three first-place votes and 117 total. Rounding out the rankings were Cameron University (66), Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico University (57; one first-place), and West Texas A&M University (48), respectively. Inside the ProgramSpend just one minute with head coach Johnny Estelle and see just how passionate he is about leading the program he played for back to the top of the Lone Star Conference. “It is definitely an honor to return to my alma mater, Texas A&M University-Kingsville,” said Estelle. “This is a place that has had such a significant positive impact and value on my life. The opportunity to begin the process of reestablishing our program among the top programs in the Lone Star Conference is a defi-nite challenge, but it is one that we will embrace with a sense of hard wood, family, and most importantly, Javelina Pride!” “Our first three games are against good programs in Lake Erie, Henderson State and St. Mary’s,” continued Estelle. “Our exhibi-

tion game against NCAA Division I program, University of Texas Pan-American, a NCAA Division I program can prove to be a great opportunity to cultivate our large fan base and supporters in South Texas.” The Hogs will play 12 of its 26 regular season games within the friendly confines of the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

“In order to compete for a championship at any level, you must be able to take care of home court,” said Estelle. “This year’s focus is no different. Kingsville Hampton Inn Court has to become one of the toughest and loudest places to play in the Lone Star Conference. The involvement of the student body and Kingsville community can make a significant different. We must prepare for tough games on the road and approach each contest with a winning attitude.”

A two-time letterwinner for Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Estelle set a single-game record for most three-pointers with nine in a Lone Star Conference Tournament contest in 1996. Estelle earned Most Valuable Player honors in 1995-96 after also setting a school record with 88 swipes. During his two seasons in Kingsville, he finished with 742 points, 214 rebounds, 211 assists and 138 steals.

Duo ReturnsAdonis Bailey and Jordan Jahr return for their senior campaigns and are the lone two returnees from last season’s squad. Thomas Diaz, a member of the 2013-14 team, is redshirting this season. Texas A&M-Kingsville welcomes 13 newcomers.

Making a Home Away From HomeTexas A&M-Kingsville begins the season at home, taking on Lake erie College and Henderson State University for the first time in school history.

After its home game on Nov. 25, the Javelinas did not return to Kingsville Hampton Inn Court until Jan. 3.

No Easy PickingsTexas A&M-Kingsville has 10 games on its schedule against teams that earned votes in the National Association of Basket-ball Coaches Preseason Poll. Four of those teams are Lone Star Conference members and St. Mary’s University is a regional opponent.

Currently, the latest NABC Poll pits the Hogs against two nationally-ranked opponents - No. 4 Tarleton State and No. 19 Angelo State - and two teams receiving votes - Midwestern State and A&M-Commerce. In fact, the Javelinas begin Lone Star Conference play against the Lions before heading to Stephenville determined to hand the Texans their first loss of the season.

Twice as Nice, What a DebutTexas A&M-Kingsville gave the crowd at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court a glimpse of the havoc defense and up-tempo offense it plans on playing as the Javelinas downed Lake Erie, 96-93, in double overtime on Nov. 14.

Down the stretch, the Hogs went 18-of-20 from the charity stripe. Four players reached double figures, led by Jordan Jahr’s and Troy Jones’ double-doubles.

Who Troy Jones! Who Troy Jones!

Junior newcomer Troy Jones is in the midst of scoring 10 or more points in seven consecutive games. The Louisiana native leads TAMUK in scoring, rebounds, field goal percentage and double-doubles.

2014-15 @JavelinaMBB Game NotesMEET THE COACHES

Former men’s basketball player and graduate assistant Johnny Estelle returns to his old stomping grounds as Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s 16th head coach in program history in 2014-15 after spending the 2013-14 season at the University of Houston.

As an assistant coach under James Dickey, Estelle helped the Cougars earn upset victories over nationally-ranked University of Memphis, Southern Methodist University and 2014 NCAA National Champion University of Connecticut in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. UH went on to win 17 games in 2013-14.

A Waco, Texas native, Estelle became head coach at Navarro College prior to the 2008-09 season. During his seven-year stint, he led the Bulldogs to a 126-48 overall record with an unprecedented run of six Region XIV Tournament championship game appearances.

He guided Navarro College to Region XIV Tournament titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and the regular-season champion¬ship in 2013. His resume also includes two NJCAA All-America First-Team honorees, 16 Region XIV All-Conference members, 12 Region XIV All-Tournament Team members and four Region XIV Texas All-Stars vs. United States All-Star Game competitors.

His 2009-10 Navarro team posted a 30-7 overall record to tie a school single-season record for wins and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament semifinals. Earlier in the year, the program earned a No. 2 national ranking, its highest since 1979.

During his tenure, the Bulldogs averaged 25 wins per season.

Estelle and his staff were successful in placing 21 of their student-athletes in NCAA Division I programs while retaining a 93.7 percent graduation rate during his tenure. In addition, 13 student-athletes achieved Dean’s List honors with five being named to the Region XIV All-Academic Team. The Spring Hill, Kan. native spent the previous year as an assistant coach under 2013-14 NJCAA Region VI Coach of the Year and KBCA Junior College Men’s Coach of the Year Jesse Shaw at Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas. Pratt finished the season 22-13, good for third in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) West Conference after being tabbed to finish sixth in the preseason. The Beavers earned four victories in the Region VI Tournament, defeating Labette Community College, then East Conference powerhouse Coffeyville Community College in the quarterfinals, West Conference champion Seward Community College in the semifinals and rival Hutchinson Community College in the championship, clinching the automatic bid into the NJCAA National Tournament.

A two-year starter at Cowley College (2002-04), he was a pivotal member of the team that advanced to the Region IV Championship game for the first time in school history. He earned his associate’s degree in 2004.

Following Cowley, Mathew continued his playing career at Lynn University, an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the Sunshine State Conference. Mathew and the Fighting Knights dominated in 2004-05, going 29-6 en route to an SSC Regular Season Championship and No. 1 overall ranking in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The team went on to win the SSC Tournament and NCAA South Region Tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championships.
