What are reflexive verbs?

• There is a group of special verbs that are always used with a REFLEXIVE PRONOUN in German, for example ‘sich waschen’

• Examples of this type of verbs are rare in English and we don’t always use the reflexive pronoun.

• For example: I wash (myself) every day.

Reflexive Pronouns

Nominative Accusative Dative

Ich (I) mich mir

du (you, sing. informal) dich dir

er (he) sich sich

sie (she) sich sich

es (it) sich sich

wir (we) uns uns

ihr (you, plural informal) euch euch

sie (they) sich sich

Sie (you, sing. & pl. formal) sich sich

Accusative or Dative?

• Some verbs are used with the accusative reflexive form:

sich interessieren: Ich interessiere mich sehr für Hip Hop Musik.

• Others are used with the dative reflexive form.

erlauben: Ich erlaube dir eine Frage zu stellen.

Some common Reflexive Verbs

• With accusative– sich interessieren für = to be interested in– sich treffen = to meet– sich beschäftigen = to occupy (oneself)– sich vorstellen = to introduce (oneself)– sich anmelden = to register, report in– sich befinden = to be located– sich freuen auf = to look forward to– sich freuen über = to be glad about

• With dative– sich wehtun = to hurt– (sich) kaufen = to buy– sich erlauben = to allow, permit– (sich) bestellen = to order– sich leidtun = to be sorry
